Doing quick math, he would have been in high school around 1988-1992, which was PEAK time for ACT UP. It’s actually not surprising his doctor said “no, I’m not gonna test you.” It was still seen as a gay cancer, so there was a ton of misinformation going on then.

Not really your chances of getting HIV from normal vaginal sex is like less than %1 if you lived a normal life without IV drug use or sex with a homosexual man you’d be ok
Also falso positives are a thing, and testing people with low enough chance of having it, might deal with an unexpectedly bad risk-reward profile.
That’s really weird. I can’t imagine refusing to test someone for something as life changing as that when it was as terrifying as it was way back then.
In those circunstances, a false positive might be more likely than a true positive, and have a terrible impact on the person.
Not saying this makes it right or wrong, but it is a consideration.

I was 16 in 1990. My dentist passed of aids that year so all his patients (including my brother and I) were advised to get tested. For some reason I don’t remember being scared about it. And we came back negative. But one of his patients, Kimberly Bergalis, passed of aids down the line. This made national news back then.
That’s sad and a huge law suit

My bfs dad tested positive and he is straight, got it from a prostitute in LA. So yeah a summer trip that went wrong.
My doctor always equated it to I was never high risk I didn't use needles , wasn't a gay male and this is all during 2008 as I was 15 16 years old up to 21 alot of older doctors still had the idea from the early days that it's a gay plague which I battled him to actually do the test

@@AvaNightingale Exactly. But doctors are biased. When I was 13 (before I was even close to being sexually active) my doctor suspected that I was gay (I am) and tested me for hiv because I had a sore throat that wouldn’t go away.
@@cody7889 jeez, bigots are so good at finding their targets it's terrifying! Worse yet they'll deny they knew even though they specifically target the traits that make one gay/queer/neurodivergent/mentally ill/poor/etc
