I understand concerns about the mix/balance, but I had not song this song previously, so I was just blown away by the drama of it. I think this lady, Diana Whiteside, sings it very well. I don't think 'Western' ears and voices are used to the style she is required to adopt, and I think she does it brilliantly. As the first version of this that I was introduced to, and as is often the case, it's still my favourite even after listening to several others. I sing with a community choir near Bristol and I found myself scanning the faces to see if I knew anyone! Nice job!
I appreciate the effort put into this performance, but the lead vocalist lacks the power and authority for this song to truly shine, and the choir is overpowering most of the time.
I would humbly suggest that she does have the power & authority. However she is overwhelmed by the choir as you say. Just a touch closer to the microphone would have done it I think! I should point out that she is simply a charming lady that works in a bank & agreed to sing this song in a strange language because I (the conductor) asked her to. I think she found great emotional depth. The problems with the balance are my fault alone, & I do apologise for them. Thanks for listening. ;)
