Thanks for the video, I'm going to have to make it sooner or later, I discovered with the audio balance that only 1 of my speakers was cracking so I set it up full balance to the working Speaker, this only lasted for a while.. now both speakers needs replacement :D cheers! This machine is still great in 2023, I use it daily.

My speakers went bad. Followed this RUclips and all worked fine when I was done. Best thing I did was print a life size photo of insides and every piece removed was placed on top of photo of where it came from. Thanks for a great video.

One of those tiny connectors on the wifi wires broke off so had to swap screens from the donor I got the speakers from. My screws got "jostled", but I I'm now crackle free and yay me. Seriously though, very good tutorial, thanks.

Thanks for the video, the picture idea worked out great. The aftermarket speakers I installed in my opinion don’t have the same fidelity as the original speakers. It does work and took me roughly 2 hours. 👍🏻

Thank you for confirming that you did not buy the Apple genuine replacement speakers. I did extensive research prior to making my purchase which is why I decided to go with those genuine speakers even though they cost more than the made in China knock offs. Because pretty much everybody who had used the cheaper speakers were saying that the audio quality of them is not the same as the original Apple speakers, and I didn’t want that. Probably your replacement speakers will last a long time so I don’t think there’s much to worry about. Once again, congratulations on your successful repair!
Awesome guide! Though need to mention that to change right speaker you need to unscrew only the little board with hdmi and card reader. Also if you do it before lifting up Mather board -- you won't need to get of "plastic thing with a hand".
Hey JDW, thanks for the thorough video! I performed a left speaker replacement on my 15”MacPro (mid 2015) model. Since only one of my speakers was blown, I got merely the left one switched. I’d say that quality-wise, the sound outcome turns out to be a 7/10. The cracking/rattling noise was gone but the overall bass and treble on my new left speaker aren’t the same as the original Apple’s one. However, as a perfectionist, this saved me a trip to an Apple store OR a $$$$ Bill for a new M1 Mac! I can’t just live with a malfunctioned speaker on my table as I use the Mac. Thanks again! And kudos to the ones who choose the route to “mend” the speaker as they’re awaiting for a newer Mac version to come out in later years.

@@JDW- I walked in and got the most expensive 3rd party option from an Apple Authorized Retailer in South East Asia (since I'm working here but I got my 15"MAC from the Bay area back in 2015). Still, it got rid of the rattling but the quality is nowhere near the original package. I wonder if you'd consider doing a video on how to know if the Mac's battery got swollen up as well as how to replace the battery ? Thanks again.

Beware of iFixit replacement parts, I just recently bought a pair for my MBP and they were generic, not originals, and sound is not the same, it sounds muffled and... overall very bad, but this is the best part I could get. I don't know if Apple is making more of those speakers, I wish there was a guide on how to disasemble the speaker and change only the affected driver. but it is what it is.
Yes, that's basically what I was saying. And that parallels what others have said. This is why I recommend going with the seller I introduced because even as of today, he is the only vendor that sells the genuine Apple replacement speakers. Link in the text description.
I've just started having issues with my right speaker recently (I believe it was because I had gone over 100% on VLC to project the sounds of a movie to a room, my fault...) Whatever the reason is, I was getting nervous thinking about replacing it, especially after skimming the ifixit guide and thinking it would take longer than I was really ready for. Your video however, has put me at ease about it.
Well, it's much easier with the video, but you still need to go slow and always second guess yourself throughout the process because (1) this is your first time doing it, and (2) you might be a bit nervous, which makes you more prone to mistakes. The most common mistakes are either (1) forgetting to disconnect or reconnect a cable, and (2) yanking off a connector because you yanked on the wires or ribbon cable rather than carefully pry out the connector as shown in the video. So with that knowledge combined with the video, you should do just fine. And the best part is, you'll have a brand new speaker and a wonderfully great DIY success feeling in the end! 🙂 Please write back to let me know how it went!

While I appreciate the tip, it would be helpful if you could kindly explain your step-by-step procedure for accomplishing that. Please consider the connector, the speaker wattage, etc. Please also consider that not everyone watching this video is a pro, and many are novices who need detailed step-by-step guidance. As such, there is a danger that testing the speakers outside the normal MBP connection could end up with a dead speaker if the person doing the test overloads the speaker.
@@JDW- I ordered speakers and should arrive this week. I will open up a bottom cover and place MacBook Pro like an open book on stand. I will unplug battery and speaker cables. Then, I will plug in new speaker and battery cables. These speakers will hanging down or I will temporarily tape these speakers to a MacBook. Then, I will turn on MacBook and checking to make sure it doesn’t have cracklings sound. I used to replace HP laptop screen, and I tested first before installing everything back in.
My right speaker suddenly blew earlier on my 2015 MBP, it sounded terrible! I managed to swap it out without fully removing the mother board, the hard part was getting the cable out from the bottom corner of the mother board as it passed underneath, I had to remove the bottoms screw and slide the cable out through the tight gap. I replaced it with a speaker from my old broken 2013 MBP. The speaker sounds muffled and a lot quieter! I don't remember it sounding that bad on the 2013 model! Maybe the speaker is slightly different and the computer EQs the sound accordingly or it's somehow deteriorated being sat in a box for years not being used. Still, it's better than a distorted sound. While looking on ebay for replacements I noticed that the same replacement parts state that they are for the 2012,13,14 and 15 models so they should be the same.
Well, the thing is, MOST replacement speakers solder are not Apple Genuine parts, and especially not for very old Macs because after a certain number of years, Apple stops providing parts. The entities who do sell parts many years after a Mac has been discontinued are almost always Chinese vendors. Those vendors may try to make the case plastics compatible with many different models to reduce their manufacturing costs, but I cannot say whether or not the speakers, ohm-ratings of those speakers, sealing, and sound quality really are the same across multiple models and multiple years. And just as you said to "never trust obeyers" in your separate post, so it is with any other parts vendor outside Apple. We cannot "trust." We can only strive to verify. And sometimes the best we can do is read reviews made by other people who have the same MacBook we do. In my case, I guess you can say I was lucky, or at least, I was searching at the right point in time. I came across tecknic-lee who sold genuine Apple parts, and receive sufficient confirmation to verify that fact. The speakers I purchased from him are still in use and work fine today, giving me further confidence they are indeed Apple genuine parts. That's important because when I was reading review after review after review of the lower cost Chinese knock-off parts at the time (prior to finding tecknic-lee), a large number of people reported "they fit but don't sound the same." Sound quality means everything to me, so I was extremely worried and disappointed. I then came across tecknic-lee, purchased from him, made my video, and have been largely satisfied ever since. But as I said to you in my other reply, Apple Genuine parts are available only for a certain number of years in the supply chain and then Apple stops making them forever. That's not to say all Chinese knock-offs are bad. But it because a trial-and-error process to find what sounds good and what doesn't. And even then you won't really know about durability until the speakers have been tested a few years. Heck, we don't even know about Apple genuine part durability until a few years have passed. Indeed, the original speakers in my MBP which started to crackle were the official parts from Apple that were assembled at Apple's factory. I know this isn't a magic solution for you, so I know how you must feel. But unfortunately, that is the state of things. When you can find Apple parts, grab them. After that, its reading reviews and trial-and-error testing.
Yeah, that's a good point, and probably why they don't sound the same despite them both being apple parts, they likely are different. It never even crossed my mind that the impedance could be totally different between the two. TBF I'm not too bothered about the sound on the laptop as I have studio monitors in the same room on my desktop, just needed stop it from sounding distorted! It sounded awful!@@JDW-
@@snookofficial7211 The bulk of my video work surrounds VINTAGE Macs from the 1980's and 90's. Apple hasn't made official parts for those machines for decades. So what we must do is either try to find a modern replacement part (which on the electronics level is still possible), or pull a working part from a donor machine. In many cases, a donor part works. So if there was a largely destroyed, super-cheap mid-2015 MBP that could act as a donor machine, that is one possible solution. But you'd only want to do that if the donor machine could be acquired for free or for about the same cost as a Chinese knock-off speaker pair. Even then, you wouldn't know if the speakers were okay until you tested them, especially if the donor machine was in bad condition.

I'm not sure what you mean by "not sure." :-) If you mean you are not sure if your speakers are third party (no brand) or genuine Apple replacement speakers, then I suspect they might not be Apple. I did a lot of research and the only vendor of the authorized genuine Apple replacement speakers is the fellow on EBAY which I link to in the text description (also shown in my video). The reason I labor over this point is because there is a lot of talk about whether the non-genuine (Chinese knock-off) replacement speakers are as good as the genuine. Most of the feedback I've seen in forums say they are not the same, but of lower audio quality. So if indeed you have a third party set of speakers, and if indeed the sound is as perfect as the original speakers were (before they went bad), then please feel free to post a link to the seller of your speakers, as that will be useful information for others to consider.
Thanks for the detailed instructions. After replacing the speakers, I didn’t hear the chime sound while booting and also WIFI has an exclamation mark, getting an error while trying to open network preferences. Any suggestions please?
Regarding WIFI, I'm afraid you need to re-open and check the 3 tiny connectors shown at 10:39 in my video. That is totally unrelated to no chime, no sound. You also did not say if you didn't get a boot chime but do get sound. If you get no sound at all, then I'm afraid you will need to recheck both speaker connectors to ensure they are properly seated. The fact that WIFI and sound worked before proves that something was left partially disconnected during your reassembly process. It's a bother, I know, but you must recheck what I just said, and I would recommend a magnifying glass so you can see the connectors better too.

Unfortunately, there are only two possible explanations for why your camera no longer works: (1) you inadvertently broke a wire while removing connectors, or (2) you simply forgot to reconnect one of the connectors or didn't reseat it properly. In most cases where something doesn't work, the reason is (2). Even if you think you put the connector back in place, it actually may not be fully seated. Thank you so much for your answers and explication :). I have one more doubt. The plate that has the three cables, bluetooth and wifi, but has any connection with the camera? Because there are the three cables, and apart one more, which I say is the camera, which enters sliding. I just disconnected everything again, that is the 4 connections, and I reconnected and failure continue. @@sandramercado360 If you are saying that the Green LED near the camera now blinks, but it did not blink before or light at all, then it means your attempt to reconnect those cables did something positive. But the LED should remain lit solid when the camera is activated. If it blinks and if the camera doesn't work, it means you still don't have something reconnected right. Those tiny round connectors are the most difficult to get reconnected properly. You need a magnifying glass and patience. Look at both sides of each connector with a magnifying glass to ensure no wires are broken and all of the connectors look good.
Oh, maybe it is not connected well, it may be very possible. I think that if it flashes it is because the camera works, that is, I don't think the cable is damaged, most likely, as you say, perhaps the cables on the board are not well connected, because they are very small. I would just like to add that, in my experience, that green LED only lights only when the camera is activated, and the LED stays solid on as long as the camera remains activated. The green LED then turns off when the camera turns off. I have never seen the green LED flash.
Lovely content and presentation, I hope you grow bigger :D I can speak only for this generation A1398 where the speakers will always fail. No rubber glue or no new replacement will help, it is just a money pit and sadly apple never addressed back in 2013 so forget it after 10 years. I thought that maybe they work on frequencies, or maybe during installation something happens with the electrical that we don't know or that you must replace them always in pair. But no... It is pure hardware fault. No solution as replacing them it is just a ticking time bomb about to go off in 3-4 months at worst and 6 at best. The fact that we have to resort to bluetooth speakers or other gimmicks (updating OS etc.) it is not what we paid the machine for. It is a brilliant laptop which I am still using today (16gb 2.3ghz highest spec at the time proved the best choice I've ever made on a laptop) but the speaker hardware fault compromises its portability. Best of luck for your channel though!
Thank you for sharing your experience. So far so good. I made my video 1 year ago, but the replacement speakers are still working fine. That is not to disagree with you, of course. It very well may be a ticking time bomb. And to be honest, if you have listened to the audio of the Apple Silicon MBPs, it really blows away the sound on my 2015 15" model, so much so that you think even the good speakers are broken! 🙂
did exactly how you did it and was extremely careful with all the connectors etc. but unfortuanetly my macbook wont boot up properly.... the apple chime comes up and the fans work but no boot logo, nothing.... i performed smc and pram reset but nothing.. do you have any idea what I can do? like I said, I was very careful and did exactly like you. :((
If you can hear that start up boot chime out of both speakers, then you both speakers are good and you made both of your speaker re-connections properly. Because you do get a boot chime, I’m guessing that you did not accidentally zap something with static electricity and instead simply did not reconnect one of the small connectors or ribbon cables perfectly. The connectors and cables are very small, so it’s very easy to accidentally not secure them properly. I’m afraid you’re going to have to reopen your Mac and carefully disconnect all of the connectors and then very carefully, under a magnifying glass if possible, reconnect them. Please be very careful when you do this. I suspect, if you did not accidentally zap anything with ESD, it should be properly after that.

I think it could have been one of those tiny Wifi module connectors that was not connected properly. Because the middle one seemed to be connected, but wasnt really. @@mvlla8624 Most likely the WIFI connectors, yes. But there are so many other possibilities too. These Macs seen rather fragile, but unless you zap them with ESD, problems that surface after re-assembly tend to boil down to an unsecured connection. Fyi found the problem. At 16:47 the charging port on the top,right side of the laptop is connected underneath the mother board and can't see it from this angle and when I moved it to the side, it came undone. Be careful in this step
@@erikmartinez-to4mm Sorry to hear you had that problem, but I am very glad to hear you found the solution! I should add a few words for others reading our dialog about battery charging… When something goes awry after a speaker change, the best advice is to start rechecking connectors. In this case, the battery wasn't charging, so checking the main battery connector (shown at 6:50 in my video) and that in the vicinity of the Magsafe connector is paramount. Sometimes a connector looks seated, but in fact it may only be partially so. In such a case, disconnecting completely and carefully reconnecting is the only option. Of course, it is also important to ensure the battery looks flat like mine does, not bloated. Bloated batteries need to be changed and may have charging issues. If reconfirming connections fails to work, must make sure there is no dirt or grit on the MagSafe connector because that is the only method of charging the battery. Also make sure your charger is good and fully connected to wall socket power. Yet another thing to try is an SMC reset because that covers issues pertaining to the power button and Magsafe (among other things). With your MBP shutdown, press and hold Shift, Control, and Option on the left side of the keyboard. At the same time, press the power button. Hold for 10 seconds. Release the keys and then turn on your Mac. This advice is based on the assumption no damage occurred to the motherboard during the removal and reinstall. Damage to the board can occur if you flexed it too much or if your body was not grounded (via earth grounded wrist strap) and you inadvertently zapped something with static electricity. I should add that there is a tiny surface mount fuse named " PP18V5_DCIN_FUSE" at the Magsafe jack, shown on page 60 of the 2015 15" MBP schematics here: www.alisaler.com/macbook-pro-15-retina-a1398-820-3332-a-schematic/ Blowing that fuse is not a common thing, and such would be a sign of a bigger problem. But to check it, one would need to use a multimeter in continuity mode with both probes on either side of that fuse (Magsafe disconnected, Battery disconnected) to see if there is a beep sound to indicate a dead short, which is correct for a good fuse. (A bad fuse would be a broken connection that would not result in a multimeter beep in continuity mode.) If that fuse is good and connectors were all checked and confirmed to be secured, then and only then would I say that something on the motherboard may have been damaged. In that worst-case scenario, one would need to consult with a repair person, unless the motherboard is to be user replaced. I hope this advice will assist those who have similar battery and/or power related issues in the future.

"tecknic-lee" is the EBAY seller of the Apple Genuine speaker parts. I checked just now and see he is "out of stock." I recommend you contact him on EBAY to ask if he has stopped selling them entirely, or if he will get more. You should perhaps also mention to him that you learned about his EBAY page from my video here on RUclips, because I continue to link to his EBAY page. At some point, Apple will stop selling those parts. Not sure if that day has come though, which is why you need to contact him about it. Please write back to let us know what he says. If Apple is truly no longer offering the parts, then the lower quality Chinese copies (which I also linked to in the text description) will be the only parts anyone can buy.
@@danielmartin2000, you definitely should do what @JDW- advised, and I recommend not buying Chinese copies but trying to buy the used ones. I had the same problem with the 2015 15" and ended up buying a used one.
In my case and in the case of the vast majority of speaker related problems on the model we are talking about, it is absolutely not a software related problem. Did you use the replacements that I recommend, which come from an official source? Or did you use the cheaper and more widely available Chinese knock offs, which could very well sound so bad you may think it has the same problem? All said, if you replaced both speakers with the vendor I recommended and still have a “crackling“ sound, then I must assume something else is wrong with your machine, and I’m afraid you would need to take it into Apple or a good repair shop to have that problem further investigated.
I’m not really sure what defines a “good store,“ and the way it was packaged really doesn’t matter so much. What I meant was in my previous post was this. Did you buy genuine Apple service parts? You see, the seller I link to in the text description under my video sells the genuine parts. If the parts are not genuine, regardless of how good the store is or how well they’re packaged, there still could be a problem. That’s what I was trying to ask you about.
We need to define our terms for clarity. When looking at the circuit boards FROM THE BOTTOM, the speaker on the LEFT is actually the speaker on the RIGHT when viewed from the keyboard side (top down). And if that is the speaker you are referring to, then you would basically need to remove just the fan and then the underlying small port-side PCB (see 17:23) in order to remove that speaker. But for the opposite speaker, you'd need to remove the motherboard because the motherboard overlaps the top of that other speaker.
Just as a precaution to prevent accidental electrostatic discharge to the motherboard from your body, it’s always wise to ground yourself to an earth ground, such as a metal water pipe pipe in the home or the grounding pin of a three prong socket in the wall.
I'm afraid I cannot explain that. Even if left sitting in a hot and high humidity environment, I wouldn't think the speakers would deteriorate so fast. But I guess anything is possible. Unfortunately, you either need to pay Apple to do it (easy but very expensive, or follow my video to do the job yourself). I wish it weren't so!
@@JDW- my left speaker use to have a crackling sound at high volume when they replace my battery and keyboard years back but it went away after a few weeks, then it barely started again but it’s at all volumes it has a cracking/muffled sound, I even switched to windows profile on my Mac and has the same issue so it’s not software related and I haven’t updated max OS in years because I’m still on Catalina.
@@TylerPKegger If the speaker started crackling immediately after battery replacement, then it is likely they caused damaged. If you had notified Apple about that immediately after noticing it, they might have swapped out the speakers for free (since it most likely could have been proven to have been their fault, in that case). But if too much time has passed (more than a couple months) since your battery replacement, they most likely wouldn't do that for you. It never hurts to ask, I suppose.

You are not the first person to report a black screen, and people who recheck and reseat their connectors almost always fix the problem doing that
I can't believe the Macbook pro 2015 is not software supported anymore. Took me by surprise as I only realised today. People have hacked their 2015 macs and installed Sonoma software and say that they run the same if not better than before. It just shows that Apple have decided to retire them prematurely.
They are indeed still very capable machines. And they should be, because they cost a pretty penny back in the day! But Apple has finished its transition to Apple Silicon, and it seems quite clear it wants to wash his hands of everything related to Intel. I currently have a 16 inch M1 Max MacBook Pro and I must say that performance is out of this world. But beyond that, you never really hear the fans blasting ever. And that is perhaps one of the greatest things in the transition away from Intel that everyone can celebrate. With that said, I still have my 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro and there are still uses for it.
@@JDW- yea I am used to fans blasting with my 2015 believe me! I will still hold onto my 2015 just for nostalgic reasons. I also bought the maxed out 13 inch model. Funny enough the fans on that barely ever spool up compared to the 15 inch.
I just replaced my MPB mid-2015 blown crackly speakers with new (used) ones from OWC/iFixIt. The crackly sound is gone, but it appears the midrange speaker on the right side of my computer is not working. The tweeter on that side is working fine. Any advice?
It seems you have replaced both speakers. If you cannot hear any sound at all from either the left speaker or the right speaker, that would mean only one of two things. You either did not reconnect the connector properly, or the speaker is bad. If you hear partial sound or sound that is not as good as it was before, crackles or no crackles, that comes down to the quality of the replacement speaker itself. And in that case, I’m very sorry to say, you will need to contact your speaker vendor for a replacement. The reason I went with Apple genuine service parts is because I was hoping to get to good speakers that would not crackle or have sound problems. It’s amazing just how many low quality replacement speakers there are out there, sold even by reputable vendors like iFixit. Thank you for that important question! I updated the THINGS TO BUY section of the text description just now to add "Grounding Wrist Strap, Silicone Pad & Wall Socket Adapter" which you can find on Amazon. The pad is a different color than mine, but it is anti-static just the same. All you need is a 3-prong (grounded) wall socket outlet for the included Adapter to plug into. It only taps the Earth Ground pin in the wall socket, which grounds you and the pad. That way, all static electricity flows out of you and into the wrist strap or pad, which in turn goes to earth ground. It keeps your electronics safe from accidental zaps!

Can you please explain how you think I could have "easily" tested the speakers prior to installation, in such a manner that would let me hear precisely what I hear when the speakers are installed? Remember that the body of the Mac itself shapes the audio of these speakers. No doubt they could be tested on some level outside the case, although I don't see how that would be "easy" in light of the fact they have connectors at each end, rather than bare speaker wire. But if the speakers are only very slightly off from the stock speakers, I doubt it would be easy to detect that just by connector the bare speakers outside the body of the computer itself. Again, the sound waveform is affected by the computer body. They designed the shape of the speakers and the body to be pair matched. This is why I am curious as to the specifics of what you are proposing.
Great! Only thing that would have made it better was if you followed your disassembly steps exactly in reverse order. This would make it easier for people that laid our their screws/parts in order in a parts tray and didn't have access to a large color printer. I resorted to just incrementally watching little segments of the disassembly stage backwards to figure out which screw was which. In the end everything works, no extra screws. I ended up ordered used "original" (supposedly tested) parts from aliexpress as the ebay seller with new service parts is out of stock. Would rather have had new parts but the used ones sound good and work fine (for now). My 2012 has never had speaker problems (still my daily driver) so strange that the 2015 had both speakers go out within a couple days of each other (panned to one side when first one went out). Maybe lack of use/exercise makes the speakers more likely to fail? The 2012 gets used every day but the 2015 has been sitting around a few years until I started using it and the speakers failed within a day or two. Anyway, thanks for the video!

It's hard to believe that the lack of use would cause the speakers to suddenly fail in the 2015 MBP, unless the design of the speakers is inherently flawed versus older MBP models. I wish I knew the speaker failure rate among all MBP models. That would shed light on any possible design issues.
Without a doubt, it's a forgotten connection. Please scroll down and check out my dialog with @mvlla8624 who had a similar problem that he resolved by opening it back up and checking all connections.
Hi what is the part # or name of the cable that you unplugged on the logic board right after disconnecting the wifi antenna cables? At 12:01 into the video, I managed to rip the tiny ribbon power cable and now need to purchase a replacement part. Thanks
I'm very sorry to hear that. That flat ribbon cable is for the iSight camera inside the display, but there is no separate part number for that cable alone. That ribbon cable is bundled with the 3 little wires that have the tiny rounded connectors on them. That entire cable assembly is Apple part no.: 820-3566-A . However, I myself have never replaced that, so I unfortunately cannot be your guide. I can only say it is not an easy job because it is attached to the display, the removal of which is documented here: www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Retina+Display+Mid+2015+Display+Assembly+Replacement/55925 And here's a photo of the display with that cable assembly attached: www.ifixit.com/products/macbook-pro-15-retina-mid-2015-display-assembly Searching for 820-3566-A on AliExpress will lead you to various replacement cable assemblies which all may work find, but again, I cannot be your guide when it comes to removal and proper replacement of that cable assembly. It is rather delicate work because it is attached to the display itself.

@@xiangli3795 When you say "3rd part" I believe you mean 3rd party, and of course your bad experience with those seems to confirm what I have read from others. People on iFixit too were saying that non of the non-Apple solutions sounded like the factory Apple speakers, despite "looking" like the factory speakers. So for anyone else reading our discussion here, I would strongly recommend the EBAY seller I talked about in my video, who sells the genuine Apple replacement parts -- a link to which I put in the text description under my video. And I get no kick-backs for saying that either. HOWEVER, it's crucial to keep in mind that even the Apple genuine speakers are not perfect, insofar as one of the two speakers I received had a problem, as I show in my video. Obviously, paying Apple to do the swap would guarantee perfect speaker replacements (because if one of their units was bad, they'd hear it and swap it out), but man, the price they charge is really high. Because of that, most people will probably take a chance and follow my video to try to do the replacement themselves. Even so, the likelihood of a sub-optimal 3rd party speaker is higher compared to buying genuine parts from Apple through that EBAY seller.
Looking to replace my 2012 speakers. Almost every listings feedback on eBay etc, said the replacements were horrible. Flat sound and about half the level of the originals. Not sure if you can still get Apple replacements for these older machines?
Because I have a 2015 model, I have never looked for 2012 model speakers. With that said, the only genuine Apple speaker seller that I know of is the one that I mentioned in my video, who is linked to in the text description under the video. So I would highly recommend that you contact him to ask.
Very sorry to hear that. If you search the comments for "mvlla8624" you will see he reported something similar. He could hear the boot chime but got nothing on the display. I advised him to carefully disconnect and reconnect his connectors again. He did that and the problem was solved. That's because you either didn't fully re-seat one or more connectors, or maybe you even broke a cable. Breaking a cable by accident is the worst case. More likely is you thought you reconnected something well, but in fact, it's not making good contact. I know it's a lot of trouble to re-check all your connectors again, but sadly, that's the only way to find and solve the problem you reported.
@@JDW- thanks for replying. I actually checked all the connections (at least thats what I think ) but no luck. Broken cables are less likely (what I think). However, I discovered that the screen has image but its super dim. Only can see it if you direct a strong light (e.g., table lamp ) to the screen . The logo is not lighting though. I will keep to work around it to see if I can come over the problem.
@@JDW-solved. Do you remember when you said “we are not going to disconnect him” at 16:47 ? I actually disconnected that connector. It was for the screen. One of the pins was bended accidentally, causing the backlight not to work. I carefully managed to fix the pin then the screen worked.

Often times the best way to check if the screen is off or if only the backlight is off is to shine a flashlight into the display. In any case, I've overjoyed to hear of your success! i found my second hand speaker has very thin bass, and sounds garbage , turns out , the speakers have only 4 copper pins which on the motherboard clearly are 6 pins,
@@groslait7814 You can see that the stock speaker (on the left) has a 6-slot connector with only 4 pins/wires at 15:33. Then at 15:38, you can see the motherboard mating connector has 6 pins. The 6 pins/wires of the new, replacement speaker in my video is shown at 18:16. But despite the difference in wire count (only 4 for the stock speaker and 6 for the replacement), the sound of the replacement is largely the same as the stock. I'm afraid I do not have access to the mid-2015 15" MBP schematics, which would shed light onto why the stock speakers have only 4 wires while the connector accommodates 6 wires. But if anyone reading this has access to those schematics, please post a link. Stop worrying about the road noise. If there was any, I can't hear it over the low-level hum in the room I'm in. I've never heard it in any of your videos! :-)
Thank you Laer. The reason I mention it is twofold: (1) In the past when I recorded a video from my home, one lady commented that the road noise was very distracting for her such that she couldn't fully concentrate on the content, and (2) the noise really is bad until I denoise, and I don't always know how much I can remove in post until I finish shooting and do the denoising. Thankfully, I can remove most of it, although if someone listens with a good pair of headphones they can probably detect a little. All said, I try my best to please everyone. I sometimes fail, so I put that little "sorry" disclaimer to hopefully reduce the number of complaints I get. I do sincerely appreciate your kind words though. Your sentiments make me feel better about how much noise I am able to remove! Best wishes!
Actually, no, I don't believe I've seen your video. Well, now that you posted and I've now checked out your Channel page and searched for the same Mac model, I see you have a video out on the subject. I skimmed through parts of your video just now.I think it's great that other people have some overlap here because it makes people who follow such videos a bit more at ease, seeing more than one person doing it. The main things I do different in my video are: (1) I show people what it sounds like before and after the replacement, (2) show them my way (not the only way, of course) of keeping the screws in a nice place which helps them find the right screws and put them back in the right place (i.e., on a printed photo of the machine), (3) I advise people to use genuine Apple replacement parts and provide a link to that seller in the text description. And of course, I shoot only in 4K and offer people my commentary before and after the job is done, in addition to the commentary while the job is being done. But the actually teardown and repair job is largely going to be the same regardless of who does it, with a bit of minor variation here and there. I see your video gets right to the point and keeps the focus on the repair only, which is perfectly fine and makes the video length a bit shorter too. My channel is primary about vintage Macs (mainly from the 1980's), which is why you will only find the single video about speaker repair on my channel. Indeed, the only other MBP repair related videos I have are my repasted video and my swollen battery video from 2019. I do have a video about this same Mac (which is my own personal MBP, by the way) made in June 2017 where I complain about the anti-glare coating issues. But that is the extent of my MBP 15" 2015 videos. Anyway, thank you for your comment. I see your channel is primarily about repair (and snacks?) which is great. @@ItsBinhRepaired Yes, I tend to say a lot of things other people don't always say. But I'm excited to hear you say it too! The same applies to old Macs like the SE/30 when it comes to discharging the CRT. Getting the residual charge out of the machine, old or modern, is important where possible. Not everything is an old CRT though. Residual charge is most often stored in capacitors. And the act of holding down the power button on these MBP's is to clear out that charge. Right. Never "trust." Always VERIFY, which is what I did. Sadly, EBAY seems to have deleted my old emails with tecknic-lee, but suffice it to say, I received sufficient confirmation from him that his speakers were genuine Apple parts. He is currently out of stock, and I'm not sure if they will be back in stock, because at some point Apple stops making replacement parts for older machines. Consider well these speakers are for a mid-2015 MBP. That machine is now closing in on being years old. Chinese knock-offs will continue to be sold from other vendors (i.e., not from tecknic-lee), however, because they are not Apple genuine parts.
Well it’s obvious you have doubts about your ability to deal with those small connectors, so in that case it is advisable to pay an expert to do the job for you. Then you can be rest assured it will be done correctly. And so long as you have a budget for it, then all should be well in the end. It’s certainly cheaper than purchasing a new Mac.

Thanks for the video, I'm going to have to make it sooner or later, I discovered with the audio balance that only 1 of my speakers was cracking so I set it up full balance to the working Speaker, this only lasted for a while.. now both speakers needs replacement :D cheers! This machine is still great in 2023, I use it daily.

My speakers went bad. Followed this RUclips and all worked fine when I was done. Best thing I did was print a life size photo of insides and every piece removed was placed on top of photo of where it came from. Thanks for a great video.

One of those tiny connectors on the wifi wires broke off so had to swap screens from the donor I got the speakers from. My screws got "jostled", but I I'm now crackle free and yay me. Seriously though, very good tutorial, thanks.

Thank you for confirming that you did not buy the Apple genuine replacement speakers. I did extensive research prior to making my purchase which is why I decided to go with those genuine speakers even though they cost more than the made in China knock offs. Because pretty much everybody who had used the cheaper speakers were saying that the audio quality of them is not the same as the original Apple speakers, and I didn’t want that.
Probably your replacement speakers will last a long time so I don’t think there’s much to worry about. Once again, congratulations on your successful repair!

Though need to mention that to change right speaker you need to unscrew only the little board with hdmi and card reader.
Also if you do it before lifting up Mather board -- you won't need to get of "plastic thing with a hand".
It amazes me how the first component to fail is the speakers and yet they are the most time-consuming to remove.

I performed a left speaker replacement on my 15”MacPro (mid 2015) model. Since only one of my speakers was blown, I got merely the left one switched. I’d say that quality-wise, the sound outcome turns out to be a 7/10. The cracking/rattling noise was gone but the overall bass and treble on my new left speaker aren’t the same as the original Apple’s one.
However, as a perfectionist, this saved me a trip to an Apple store OR a $$$$ Bill for a new M1 Mac! I can’t just live with a malfunctioned speaker on my table as I use the Mac.
Thanks again! And kudos to the ones who choose the route to “mend” the speaker as they’re awaiting for a newer Mac version to come out in later years.

@@JDW- I walked in and got the most expensive 3rd party option from an Apple Authorized Retailer in South East Asia (since I'm working here but I got my 15"MAC from the Bay area back in 2015). Still, it got rid of the rattling but the quality is nowhere near the original package. I wonder if you'd consider doing a video on how to know if the Mac's battery got swollen up as well as how to replace the battery ? Thanks again.

Beware of iFixit replacement parts, I just recently bought a pair for my MBP and they were generic, not originals, and sound is not the same, it sounds muffled and... overall very bad, but this is the best part I could get. I don't know if Apple is making more of those speakers, I wish there was a guide on how to disasemble the speaker and change only the affected driver. but it is what it is.
Yes, that's basically what I was saying. And that parallels what others have said. This is why I recommend going with the seller I introduced because even as of today, he is the only vendor that sells the genuine Apple replacement speakers. Link in the text description.
I've just started having issues with my right speaker recently (I believe it was because I had gone over 100% on VLC to project the sounds of a movie to a room, my fault...) Whatever the reason is, I was getting nervous thinking about replacing it, especially after skimming the ifixit guide and thinking it would take longer than I was really ready for.
Your video however, has put me at ease about it.
Well, it's much easier with the video, but you still need to go slow and always second guess yourself throughout the process because (1) this is your first time doing it, and (2) you might be a bit nervous, which makes you more prone to mistakes. The most common mistakes are either (1) forgetting to disconnect or reconnect a cable, and (2) yanking off a connector because you yanked on the wires or ribbon cable rather than carefully pry out the connector as shown in the video. So with that knowledge combined with the video, you should do just fine. And the best part is, you'll have a brand new speaker and a wonderfully great DIY success feeling in the end! 🙂 Please write back to let me know how it went!

You can plug and test speaker first before assembly and installation.
While I appreciate the tip, it would be helpful if you could kindly explain your step-by-step procedure for accomplishing that. Please consider the connector, the speaker wattage, etc. Please also consider that not everyone watching this video is a pro, and many are novices who need detailed step-by-step guidance. As such, there is a danger that testing the speakers outside the normal MBP connection could end up with a dead speaker if the person doing the test overloads the speaker.
@@JDW- I ordered speakers and should arrive this week. I will open up a bottom cover and place MacBook Pro like an open book on stand. I will unplug battery and speaker cables. Then, I will plug in new speaker and battery cables. These speakers will hanging down or I will temporarily tape these speakers to a MacBook. Then, I will turn on MacBook and checking to make sure it doesn’t have cracklings sound. I used to replace HP laptop screen, and I tested first before installing everything back in.

My right speaker suddenly blew earlier on my 2015 MBP, it sounded terrible! I managed to swap it out without fully removing the mother board, the hard part was getting the cable out from the bottom corner of the mother board as it passed underneath, I had to remove the bottoms screw and slide the cable out through the tight gap.
I replaced it with a speaker from my old broken 2013 MBP. The speaker sounds muffled and a lot quieter! I don't remember it sounding that bad on the 2013 model! Maybe the speaker is slightly different and the computer EQs the sound accordingly or it's somehow deteriorated being sat in a box for years not being used. Still, it's better than a distorted sound. While looking on ebay for replacements I noticed that the same replacement parts state that they are for the 2012,13,14 and 15 models so they should be the same.
Well, the thing is, MOST replacement speakers solder are not Apple Genuine parts, and especially not for very old Macs because after a certain number of years, Apple stops providing parts. The entities who do sell parts many years after a Mac has been discontinued are almost always Chinese vendors. Those vendors may try to make the case plastics compatible with many different models to reduce their manufacturing costs, but I cannot say whether or not the speakers, ohm-ratings of those speakers, sealing, and sound quality really are the same across multiple models and multiple years. And just as you said to "never trust obeyers" in your separate post, so it is with any other parts vendor outside Apple. We cannot "trust." We can only strive to verify. And sometimes the best we can do is read reviews made by other people who have the same MacBook we do.
In my case, I guess you can say I was lucky, or at least, I was searching at the right point in time. I came across tecknic-lee who sold genuine Apple parts, and receive sufficient confirmation to verify that fact. The speakers I purchased from him are still in use and work fine today, giving me further confidence they are indeed Apple genuine parts. That's important because when I was reading review after review after review of the lower cost Chinese knock-off parts at the time (prior to finding tecknic-lee), a large number of people reported "they fit but don't sound the same." Sound quality means everything to me, so I was extremely worried and disappointed. I then came across tecknic-lee, purchased from him, made my video, and have been largely satisfied ever since. But as I said to you in my other reply, Apple Genuine parts are available only for a certain number of years in the supply chain and then Apple stops making them forever.
That's not to say all Chinese knock-offs are bad. But it because a trial-and-error process to find what sounds good and what doesn't. And even then you won't really know about durability until the speakers have been tested a few years. Heck, we don't even know about Apple genuine part durability until a few years have passed. Indeed, the original speakers in my MBP which started to crackle were the official parts from Apple that were assembled at Apple's factory.
I know this isn't a magic solution for you, so I know how you must feel. But unfortunately, that is the state of things. When you can find Apple parts, grab them. After that, its reading reviews and trial-and-error testing.
Yeah, that's a good point, and probably why they don't sound the same despite them both being apple parts, they likely are different. It never even crossed my mind that the impedance could be totally different between the two. TBF I'm not too bothered about the sound on the laptop as I have studio monitors in the same room on my desktop, just needed stop it from sounding distorted! It sounded awful!@@JDW-
@@snookofficial7211 The bulk of my video work surrounds VINTAGE Macs from the 1980's and 90's. Apple hasn't made official parts for those machines for decades. So what we must do is either try to find a modern replacement part (which on the electronics level is still possible), or pull a working part from a donor machine. In many cases, a donor part works. So if there was a largely destroyed, super-cheap mid-2015 MBP that could act as a donor machine, that is one possible solution. But you'd only want to do that if the donor machine could be acquired for free or for about the same cost as a Chinese knock-off speaker pair. Even then, you wouldn't know if the speakers were okay until you tested them, especially if the donor machine was in bad condition.

I'm not sure what you mean by "not sure." :-) If you mean you are not sure if your speakers are third party (no brand) or genuine Apple replacement speakers, then I suspect they might not be Apple. I did a lot of research and the only vendor of the authorized genuine Apple replacement speakers is the fellow on EBAY which I link to in the text description (also shown in my video). The reason I labor over this point is because there is a lot of talk about whether the non-genuine (Chinese knock-off) replacement speakers are as good as the genuine. Most of the feedback I've seen in forums say they are not the same, but of lower audio quality. So if indeed you have a third party set of speakers, and if indeed the sound is as perfect as the original speakers were (before they went bad), then please feel free to post a link to the seller of your speakers, as that will be useful information for others to consider.
Thanks for the detailed instructions. After replacing the speakers, I didn’t hear the chime sound while booting and also WIFI has an exclamation mark, getting an error while trying to open network preferences. Any suggestions please?
Regarding WIFI, I'm afraid you need to re-open and check the 3 tiny connectors shown at 10:39 in my video. That is totally unrelated to no chime, no sound. You also did not say if you didn't get a boot chime but do get sound. If you get no sound at all, then I'm afraid you will need to recheck both speaker connectors to ensure they are properly seated. The fact that WIFI and sound worked before proves that something was left partially disconnected during your reassembly process. It's a bother, I know, but you must recheck what I just said, and I would recommend a magnifying glass so you can see the connectors better too.

Unfortunately, there are only two possible explanations for why your camera no longer works: (1) you inadvertently broke a wire while removing connectors, or (2) you simply forgot to reconnect one of the connectors or didn't reseat it properly. In most cases where something doesn't work, the reason is (2). Even if you think you put the connector back in place, it actually may not be fully seated. @@sandramercado360 If you are saying that the Green LED near the camera now blinks, but it did not blink before or light at all, then it means your attempt to reconnect those cables did something positive. But the LED should remain lit solid when the camera is activated. If it blinks and if the camera doesn't work, it means you still don't have something reconnected right. Those tiny round connectors are the most difficult to get reconnected properly. You need a magnifying glass and patience. Look at both sides of each connector with a magnifying glass to ensure no wires are broken and all of the connectors look good.
Oh, maybe it is not connected well, it may be very possible. I think that if it flashes it is because the camera works, that is, I don't think the cable is damaged, most likely, as you say, perhaps the cables on the board are not well connected, because they are very small. I would just like to add that, in my experience, that green LED only lights only when the camera is activated, and the LED stays solid on as long as the camera remains activated. The green LED then turns off when the camera turns off. I have never seen the green LED flash.

I can speak only for this generation A1398 where the speakers will always fail. No rubber glue or no new replacement will help, it is just a money pit and sadly apple never addressed back in 2013 so forget it after 10 years.
I thought that maybe they work on frequencies, or maybe during installation something happens with the electrical that we don't know or that you must replace them always in pair. But no... It is pure hardware fault.
No solution as replacing them it is just a ticking time bomb about to go off in 3-4 months at worst and 6 at best.
The fact that we have to resort to bluetooth speakers or other gimmicks (updating OS etc.) it is not what we paid the machine for.
It is a brilliant laptop which I am still using today (16gb 2.3ghz highest spec at the time proved the best choice I've ever made on a laptop) but the speaker hardware fault compromises its portability.

Thank you for sharing your experience. So far so good. I made my video 1 year ago, but the replacement speakers are still working fine. That is not to disagree with you, of course. It very well may be a ticking time bomb. And to be honest, if you have listened to the audio of the Apple Silicon MBPs, it really blows away the sound on my 2015 15" model, so much so that you think even the good speakers are broken! 🙂

If you can hear that start up boot chime out of both speakers, then you both speakers are good and you made both of your speaker re-connections properly. Because you do get a boot chime, I’m guessing that you did not accidentally zap something with static electricity and instead simply did not reconnect one of the small connectors or ribbon cables perfectly. The connectors and cables are very small, so it’s very easy to accidentally not secure them properly. I’m afraid you’re going to have to reopen your Mac and carefully disconnect all of the connectors and then very carefully, under a magnifying glass if possible, reconnect them. Please be very careful when you do this. I suspect, if you did not accidentally zap anything with ESD, it should be properly after that.

I think it could have been one of those tiny Wifi module connectors that was not connected properly. Because the middle one seemed to be connected, but wasnt really.

These Macs seen rather fragile, but unless you zap them with ESD, problems that surface after re-assembly tend to boil down to an unsecured connection. Fyi found the problem. At 16:47 the charging port on the top,right side of the laptop is connected underneath the mother board and can't see it from this angle and when I moved it to the side, it came undone. Be careful in this step

When something goes awry after a speaker change, the best advice is to start rechecking connectors. In this case, the battery wasn't charging, so checking the main battery connector (shown at 6:50 in my video) and that in the vicinity of the Magsafe connector is paramount. Sometimes a connector looks seated, but in fact it may only be partially so. In such a case, disconnecting completely and carefully reconnecting is the only option.
Of course, it is also important to ensure the battery looks flat like mine does, not bloated. Bloated batteries need to be changed and may have charging issues.
If reconfirming connections fails to work, must make sure there is no dirt or grit on the MagSafe connector because that is the only method of charging the battery. Also make sure your charger is good and fully connected to wall socket power.
Yet another thing to try is an SMC reset because that covers issues pertaining to the power button and Magsafe (among other things). With your MBP shutdown, press and hold Shift, Control, and Option on the left side of the keyboard. At the same time, press the power button. Hold for 10 seconds. Release the keys and then turn on your Mac.
This advice is based on the assumption no damage occurred to the motherboard during the removal and reinstall. Damage to the board can occur if you flexed it too much or if your body was not grounded (via earth grounded wrist strap) and you inadvertently zapped something with static electricity.
I should add that there is a tiny surface mount fuse named " PP18V5_DCIN_FUSE" at the Magsafe jack, shown on page 60 of the 2015 15" MBP schematics here: www.alisaler.com/macbook-pro-15-retina-a1398-820-3332-a-schematic/
Blowing that fuse is not a common thing, and such would be a sign of a bigger problem. But to check it, one would need to use a multimeter in continuity mode with both probes on either side of that fuse (Magsafe disconnected, Battery disconnected) to see if there is a beep sound to indicate a dead short, which is correct for a good fuse. (A bad fuse would be a broken connection that would not result in a multimeter beep in continuity mode.) If that fuse is good and connectors were all checked and confirmed to be secured, then and only then would I say that something on the motherboard may have been damaged. In that worst-case scenario, one would need to consult with a repair person, unless the motherboard is to be user replaced.
I hope this advice will assist those who have similar battery and/or power related issues in the future.

"tecknic-lee" is the EBAY seller of the Apple Genuine speaker parts. I checked just now and see he is "out of stock." I recommend you contact him on EBAY to ask if he has stopped selling them entirely, or if he will get more. You should perhaps also mention to him that you learned about his EBAY page from my video here on RUclips, because I continue to link to his EBAY page. At some point, Apple will stop selling those parts. Not sure if that day has come though, which is why you need to contact him about it. Please write back to let us know what he says. If Apple is truly no longer offering the parts, then the lower quality Chinese copies (which I also linked to in the text description) will be the only parts anyone can buy.

@@danielmartin2000, you definitely should do what @JDW- advised, and I recommend not buying Chinese copies but trying to buy the used ones. I had the same problem with the 2015 15" and ended up buying a used one.

In my case and in the case of the vast majority of speaker related problems on the model we are talking about, it is absolutely not a software related problem. Did you use the replacements that I recommend, which come from an official source? Or did you use the cheaper and more widely available Chinese knock offs, which could very well sound so bad you may think it has the same problem?
All said, if you replaced both speakers with the vendor I recommended and still have a “crackling“ sound, then I must assume something else is wrong with your machine, and I’m afraid you would need to take it into Apple or a good repair shop to have that problem further investigated.

Anyway of doing the left speaker without taking the whole motherboard off ?
We need to define our terms for clarity. When looking at the circuit boards FROM THE BOTTOM, the speaker on the LEFT is actually the speaker on the RIGHT when viewed from the keyboard side (top down). And if that is the speaker you are referring to, then you would basically need to remove just the fan and then the underlying small port-side PCB (see 17:23) in order to remove that speaker. But for the opposite speaker, you'd need to remove the motherboard because the motherboard overlaps the top of that other speaker.

Just as a precaution to prevent accidental electrostatic discharge to the motherboard from your body, it’s always wise to ground yourself to an earth ground, such as a metal water pipe pipe in the home or the grounding pin of a three prong socket in the wall.
I haven’t used my 2015 Mac Pro in months, then left speaker sounded like how yours did, how does that even happen?
I'm afraid I cannot explain that. Even if left sitting in a hot and high humidity environment, I wouldn't think the speakers would deteriorate so fast. But I guess anything is possible. Unfortunately, you either need to pay Apple to do it (easy but very expensive, or follow my video to do the job yourself). I wish it weren't so!
@@JDW- my left speaker use to have a crackling sound at high volume when they replace my battery and keyboard years back but it went away after a few weeks, then it barely started again but it’s at all volumes it has a cracking/muffled sound, I even switched to windows profile on my Mac and has the same issue so it’s not software related and I haven’t updated max OS in years because I’m still on Catalina.
@@TylerPKegger If the speaker started crackling immediately after battery replacement, then it is likely they caused damaged. If you had notified Apple about that immediately after noticing it, they might have swapped out the speakers for free (since it most likely could have been proven to have been their fault, in that case). But if too much time has passed (more than a couple months) since your battery replacement, they most likely wouldn't do that for you. It never hurts to ask, I suppose.

I can't believe the Macbook pro 2015 is not software supported anymore. Took me by surprise as I only realised today. People have hacked their 2015 macs and installed Sonoma software and say that they run the same if not better than before. It just shows that Apple have decided to retire them prematurely.
They are indeed still very capable machines. And they should be, because they cost a pretty penny back in the day! But Apple has finished its transition to Apple Silicon, and it seems quite clear it wants to wash his hands of everything related to Intel.
I currently have a 16 inch M1 Max MacBook Pro and I must say that performance is out of this world. But beyond that, you never really hear the fans blasting ever. And that is perhaps one of the greatest things in the transition away from Intel that everyone can celebrate. With that said, I still have my 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro and there are still uses for it.
@@JDW- yea I am used to fans blasting with my 2015 believe me! I will still hold onto my 2015 just for nostalgic reasons. I also bought the maxed out 13 inch model. Funny enough the fans on that barely ever spool up compared to the 15 inch.
I just replaced my MPB mid-2015 blown crackly speakers with new (used) ones from OWC/iFixIt. The crackly sound is gone, but it appears the midrange speaker on the right side of my computer is not working. The tweeter on that side is working fine. Any advice?
It seems you have replaced both speakers. If you cannot hear any sound at all from either the left speaker or the right speaker, that would mean only one of two things. You either did not reconnect the connector properly, or the speaker is bad.
If you hear partial sound or sound that is not as good as it was before, crackles or no crackles, that comes down to the quality of the replacement speaker itself. And in that case, I’m very sorry to say, you will need to contact your speaker vendor for a replacement.
The reason I went with Apple genuine service parts is because I was hoping to get to good speakers that would not crackle or have sound problems. It’s amazing just how many low quality replacement speakers there are out there, sold even by reputable vendors like iFixit. But if you watch my video, you will see that even one of my genuine Apple replacement parts was not top quality and the seller had to send me out a replacement for that replacement!

I updated the THINGS TO BUY section of the text description just now to add "Grounding Wrist Strap, Silicone Pad & Wall Socket Adapter" which you can find on Amazon. The pad is a different color than mine, but it is anti-static just the same. All you need is a 3-prong (grounded) wall socket outlet for the included Adapter to plug into. It only taps the Earth Ground pin in the wall socket, which grounds you and the pad. That way, all static electricity flows out of you and into the wrist strap or pad, which in turn goes to earth ground. It keeps your electronics safe from accidental zaps!

Can you please explain how you think I could have "easily" tested the speakers prior to installation, in such a manner that would let me hear precisely what I hear when the speakers are installed? Remember that the body of the Mac itself shapes the audio of these speakers. No doubt they could be tested on some level outside the case, although I don't see how that would be "easy" in light of the fact they have connectors at each end, rather than bare speaker wire. But if the speakers are only very slightly off from the stock speakers, I doubt it would be easy to detect that just by connector the bare speakers outside the body of the computer itself. Again, the sound waveform is affected by the computer body. They designed the shape of the speakers and the body to be pair matched. This is why I am curious as to the specifics of what you are proposing.

Great! Only thing that would have made it better was if you followed your disassembly steps exactly in reverse order. This would make it easier for people that laid our their screws/parts in order in a parts tray and didn't have access to a large color printer. I resorted to just incrementally watching little segments of the disassembly stage backwards to figure out which screw was which. In the end everything works, no extra screws. I ended up ordered used "original" (supposedly tested) parts from aliexpress as the ebay seller with new service parts is out of stock. Would rather have had new parts but the used ones sound good and work fine (for now). My 2012 has never had speaker problems (still my daily driver) so strange that the 2015 had both speakers go out within a couple days of each other (panned to one side when first one went out). Maybe lack of use/exercise makes the speakers more likely to fail? The 2012 gets used every day but the 2015 has been sitting around a few years until I started using it and the speakers failed within a day or two. Anyway, thanks for the video!

It's hard to believe that the lack of use would cause the speakers to suddenly fail in the 2015 MBP, unless the design of the speakers is inherently flawed versus older MBP models. I wish I knew the speaker failure rate among all MBP models. That would shed light on any possible design issues.

That flat ribbon cable is for the iSight camera inside the display, but there is no separate part number for that cable alone. That ribbon cable is bundled with the 3 little wires that have the tiny rounded connectors on them. That entire cable assembly is Apple part no.: 820-3566-A . However, I myself have never replaced that, so I unfortunately cannot be your guide. I can only say it is not an easy job because it is attached to the display, the removal of which is documented here:

For anyone with speakers that do not work at all, in cases where you have no iPhone, Android Phone, tablet or other computer at your disposal, you can click the "CC" icon to enable English captions. People on iFixit too were saying that non of the non-Apple solutions sounded like the factory Apple speakers, despite "looking" like the factory speakers. So for anyone else reading our discussion here, I would strongly recommend the EBAY seller I talked about in my video, who sells the genuine Apple replacement parts -- a link to which I put in the text description under my video. And I get no kick-backs for saying that either. HOWEVER, it's crucial to keep in mind that even the Apple genuine speakers are not perfect, insofar as one of the two speakers I received had a problem, as I show in my video. Obviously, paying Apple to do the swap would guarantee perfect speaker replacements (because if one of their units was bad, they'd hear it and swap it out), but man, the price they charge is really high. Because of that, most people will probably take a chance and follow my video to try to do the replacement themselves. Even so, the likelihood of a sub-optimal 3rd party speaker is higher compared to buying genuine parts from Apple through that EBAY seller.

Looking to replace my 2012 speakers. Almost every listings feedback on eBay etc, said the replacements were horrible. Flat sound and about half the level of the originals. Not sure if you can still get Apple replacements for these older machines?
Because I have a 2015 model, I have never looked for 2012 model speakers. With that said, the only genuine Apple speaker seller that I know of is the one that I mentioned in my video, who is linked to in the text description under the video. So I would highly recommend that you contact him to ask.

Very sorry to hear that. If you search the comments for "mvlla8624" you will see he reported something similar. He could hear the boot chime but got nothing on the display. I advised him to carefully disconnect and reconnect his connectors again. He did that and the problem was solved. That's because you either didn't fully re-seat one or more connectors, or maybe you even broke a cable. Breaking a cable by accident is the worst case. More likely is you thought you reconnected something well, but in fact, it's not making good contact. I know it's a lot of trouble to re-check all your connectors again, but sadly, that's the only way to find and solve the problem you reported.
@@JDW- thanks for replying. I actually checked all the connections (at least thats what I think ) but no luck. Broken cables are less likely (what I think). However, I discovered that the screen has image but its super dim. Only can see it if you direct a strong light (e.g., table lamp ) to the screen . The logo is not lighting though. I will keep to work around it to see if I can come over the problem.
@@JDW-solved. Do you remember when you said “we are not going to disconnect him” at 16:47 ? I actually disconnected that connector. It was for the screen. One of the pins was bended accidentally, causing the backlight not to work. I carefully managed to fix the pin then the screen worked.

Often times the best way to check if the screen is off or if only the backlight is off is to shine a flashlight into the display. In any case, I've overjoyed to hear of your success! i found my second hand speaker has very thin bass, and sounds garbage , turns out , the speakers have only 4 copper pins which on the motherboard clearly are 6 pins,
in this video , the old speaker has 4 pins connectors and the new ones have 6 pins ,
@@groslait7814 You can see that the stock speaker (on the left) has a 6-slot connector with only 4 pins/wires at 15:33. Then at 15:38, you can see the motherboard mating connector has 6 pins. The 6 pins/wires of the new, replacement speaker in my video is shown at 18:16. But despite the difference in wire count (only 4 for the stock speaker and 6 for the replacement), the sound of the replacement is largely the same as the stock. I'm afraid I do not have access to the mid-2015 15" MBP schematics, which would shed light onto why the stock speakers have only 4 wires while the connector accommodates 6 wires. But if anyone reading this has access to those schematics, please post a link. Stop worrying about the road noise. If there was any, I can't hear it over the low-level hum in the room I'm in. I've never heard it in any of your videos! :-)
Thank you Laer. The reason I mention it is twofold: (1) In the past when I recorded a video from my home, one lady commented that the road noise was very distracting for her such that she couldn't fully concentrate on the content, and (2) the noise really is bad until I denoise, and I don't always know how much I can remove in post until I finish shooting and do the denoising. Thankfully, I can remove most of it, although if someone listens with a good pair of headphones they can probably detect a little. All said, I try my best to please everyone. I sometimes fail, so I put that little "sorry" disclaimer to hopefully reduce the number of complaints I get. I do sincerely appreciate your kind words though. Your sentiments make me feel better about how much noise I am able to remove! Best wishes!

Actually, no, I don't believe I've seen your video. Well, now that you posted and I've now checked out your Channel page and searched for the same Mac model, I see you have a video out on the subject. I skimmed through parts of your video just now.I think it's great that other people have some overlap here because it makes people who follow such videos a bit more at ease, seeing more than one person doing it.
The main things I do different in my video are: (1) I show people what it sounds like before and after the replacement, (2) show them my way (not the only way, of course) of keeping the screws in a nice place which helps them find the right screws and put them back in the right place (i.e., on a printed photo of the machine), (3) I advise people to use genuine Apple replacement parts and provide a link to that seller in the text description. And of course, I shoot only in 4K and offer people my commentary before and after the job is done, in addition to the commentary while the job is being done. But the actually teardown and repair job is largely going to be the same regardless of who does it, with a bit of minor variation here and there. I see your video gets right to the point and keeps the focus on the repair only, which is perfectly fine and makes the video length a bit shorter too.
My channel is primary about vintage Macs (mainly from the 1980's), which is why you will only find the single video about speaker repair on my channel. Indeed, the only other MBP repair related videos I have are my repasted video and my swollen battery video from 2019. I do have a video about this same Mac (which is my own personal MBP, by the way) made in June 2017 where I complain about the anti-glare coating issues. But that is the extent of my MBP 15" 2015 videos.
Anyway, thank you for your comment. I see your channel is primarily about repair (and snacks?) which is great. I show people a lot of repair of vintage Macs, which is something we unfortunately must all do when we get into that hobby. Best wishes to you on your own repair adventures!

@@ItsBinhRepaired Yes, I tend to say a lot of things other people don't always say. But I'm excited to hear you say it too! The same applies to old Macs like the SE/30 when it comes to discharging the CRT. Getting the residual charge out of the machine, old or modern, is important where possible. Not everything is an old CRT though. Residual charge is most often stored in capacitors. And the act of holding down the power button on these MBP's is to clear out that charge. Right. Never "trust." Always VERIFY, which is what I did. Sadly, EBAY seems to have deleted my old emails with tecknic-lee, but suffice it to say, I received sufficient confirmation from him that his speakers were genuine Apple parts. He is currently out of stock, and I'm not sure if they will be back in stock, because at some point Apple stops making replacement parts for older machines. Consider well these speakers are for a mid-2015 MBP. That machine is now closing in on being years old. Chinese knock-offs will continue to be sold from other vendors (i.e., not from tecknic-lee), however, because they are not Apple genuine parts.
Okay, forget that. Goodbye $300!

Well it’s obvious you have doubts about your ability to deal with those small connectors, so in that case it is advisable to pay an expert to do the job for you. Then you can be rest assured it will be done correctly. And so long as you have a budget for it, then all should be well in the end. It’s certainly cheaper than purchasing a new Mac.
