Brother, the term "black" was coined by non-Africans and doesn't capture our true identity. Its definition varies widely depending on societal context, especially in the Americas, where race lacks universal standardization and is subject to cultural interpretation. In Brazil, for instance, even siblings may be classified differently based on appearance. The controversy over a South African artist identifying as "colored" highlights how fluid racial categorization can be, with the same person potentially labeled differently in America. This stems from American societal indoctrination, which influences global perspectives on race. Our heritage and ancestry trace back generations, predating modern labels. Many of us first encountered the term "black" in North America; some don’t mind it, while others prefer not to use it. Personally, I don't mind using the term to describe myself, but it doesn't fully capture my identity. People should be free to identify as they choose without controversy. Look at the NBA: many mixed-race players are procreating with white women, will soon be raising questions about the definition of "black." Foundational Black Americans and caribbeam blacks will soon need to reconsider their own definitions of blackness. When I identify with my origin, I feel a deeper connection than just skin color. Btw, growing up in the West, whenever I identified as black, it was often other "blacks" who questioned that. Only recently have people stopped questioning East Africans' blackness and instead wondered why we don't all accept the term.

And why is this argument a thing anyway? Why are they coming out now saying that they are not Black? Why is it so important for anyone to acknowledge that? Are they ashamed of being Black or something? Or do they believe being considered Black is somehow an insult? I don't understand. I've never thought of Somalis as the same as an African Black person with woolly hair. That’s just Ethnic violence in Africa. When you’re in the Western World you’re considered Black. They’re just different types of Black, they just look different. That’s all
East Africa is also diverse. You have Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, etc. Not all of them look like Somails and Ethiopian. Americans feel they are the regular black and eveybody else not black black lol.
We Somalis first encountered the term "Black" when we moved to the West in 1990. We observed that descendants of slaves identified with this term. In Africa, where everyone has melanin, we identify with our ancestry, ethnicity, and tribe, specifically as Somali. We noticed that those identifying as "Black" were primarily of West African and Central African descent. If "Black" were based solely on melanin, then Indians, specifically Dravidians, would also be considered "Black," but this is not the case. Therefore, what does "Black" mean? Africa is the most genetically diverse continent, and North Africans are genetically more related to Somalis than to West or Central Africans. So, what is "Black"? It appears to be a term tied to urban culture and heritage, used by people who were stripped of their ancestry and do not know where they were taken from. These individuals adopted the term "Black" because they lost their specific identities and had to conform to a term created by their slavers, forming a new tribe in the Western Hemisphere. The question then arises: should those of us who know our ancestry and identity abandon it? Should we trade our ancestral identity for this new term, or should we honor and preserve the dignity of our ancestors by keeping their name? We have been Somali for 10 Thousand years before the English Language was created, before These social constructs were created, we have been Somali before the concept of Race become Black,White,Yellow, Red, and Brown. When they say "how dare you not claim Black, the same question can be asked of those claiming the title. How dare you adhere to a European concept as an Melinan person, When the Native has rejected the European for calling him Red, when the Chinese has rejected the European man for call him Yellow. Some of our young people like the Urban Culture and may jump on the "Black" thing but no cultured Somali actually believes he/she is Black.
Somali people are more attracted to Islam religion and Arab identity. They were enslaved and conquered by Arabs ( Arab slave trade). There culture and identity differ from Blacks in the diaspora ( Canada, US, Carribean, etc). People need to educate themselves instead of following ignorant rap beefs, behavior, etc. Read and educate yourselves.
@@maxcali863 I agree with your comment. But in 200 years these Somali that have immigrated to western society their descendants with have straight hair and fair skin all of this won't matter
This what I be telling people. It’s actually a lonely thing being “black” outside of cultural ties within the city. You black but you ain’t their kinda black. The Somali black is different from the jamaican/African/American/ etc black. Now take in context the religious differences it’s a different kind of people however the mixing still happens which i rarely see In the downtown core. In Canada there is a divide amongst the colored folks. The problem permits when we never get to the point when we “JUST FUCKING HUMAN BEINGS WHO BREATHE AND SHIT”. We all deal with our 24 hours differently. It’s lonely just “TRYING TO BE A HUMAN”. Sad cause it can all be so simple.

Only people who have no history or culture identity themselves with race. Any African will first identify with country or ethnicity. Race is not on the list for Africans. Somali people were never taken to America or Europe as slaves in the 14-18th century, so they are not technically black. Somali people were never taken in the 16th century by the Americans through the Atlantic ocean, the Somali Empire also knew as The Ajuuraan Empire with other Somali Empire called Adal Empire with The Ottoman Empire were fighting against the Portuguese Empire in the 16th century so they are different, but West African are the same people as Black Americans today whose ancestors were taken 400 years ago from west Africa not Somali peoples Land 🇸🇴🧕🏼🇺🇸

True Somalis are not mixed with anything we are Cushitic our bloodline started in Somalia. We have looked the same for thousands of years this whole narrative that were somehow mixed with something else like either European or Arab is a complete lie we are not like Moroccans, Egyptians or people from Libya. We are native to our land and been there for hundreds of thousands of years and similar to Jamaica we do have Somalis that are not black. You know how you guys have Asians and some Indians that consider themselves Jamaican even though they’re not ethically Jamaican we have people from Yemen that their families have been in Somalia for hundreds of years so they do consider themselves Somali, but they’re not ethically Somali and there’s been mixing so that’s how you see some Somali that are super light skinned with super curly hair, and you see other Somalis look totally different
Yes it is not about color... Somali, Ertrean, Ethiopian... They never identify themselves as blacks or brown never... So they are not blacks They are simply somali ertrean. There is black skin anywhere

It's not just east Africans that don't identify as black but also alot of African countries in general. The reason why Africans don't identify as black is because they see black as a title given after colonization.. most people that identify as black have been thru slavery and had alot of their history and traditions stolen.. believe it or not there's alot of Africans that haven't been thru slavery and still have connections to their family lineage and history. It's fried but it makes sense (as an idea)

But another point is that in the eyes of racist White people, no matter if they are in Europe or the States, you are Black based on your skin tone. In Asia, you are Black based on your skin tone and will not be seen or thought of differently.

That's crazy as it is that kid had a point, Egyptians are not black Morocco, is not black?
Kind of has a point

Somalians y'all are black and beautiful. I think why some Somalian are mistaking race and phenotypes.
