I ran into this guy while hanging out at my buddy's college in the early 90s. A mutual acquaintance of John and my friend's knew we were both into punk rock (it was right before Green Day hit big and it was still unusual to find someone that listened to anything that wasn't Top40 schlock) and did the "you guys would really get along" thing and mentioned John played music. I asked him what he played and he said something like "its kind of folk music" or something like that (IIRC, it's been decades and my memory is shot). Back in those days I kind of had a chip on my shoulder about folk musicians so I kind of blew it off as 'not my thing'. Years later I heard "Going to Georgia" on a homemade cassette and fell in love with it. When I looked up the band, to my shock, I recognized him and felt like a complete ass. It is weird to now see him older and graying since my memory is of a nerdy unassuming college kid.
Have you checked out his cassette releases? Because if not you should really check them out to see how his music was when he was that nerdy unassuming college kid. Taboo IV and The Hound Chronicles are some of the earliest, yet (in my opinion) some of the best works John has had published.
During the pandemic, I get overly excited when "What's in my Bag" features one of my favorite recording artists. It's happened it again with John. Keep em coming, I'm bored!
Couldn't agree more. I have rarely had to return a CD I've bought because of defects, as opposed to vinyl being warped, having skips, etc. And even though some of the genres on the discs in John's virtual bag aren't to my taste, I may try expanding my horizons a little--his description of Steve Roach's music is intrguing.
Best kind of episode here, what with unexpected curveball selections. Actually eclectic. You can tell he just adores music in all its forms. Roach, Brubeck, Moor Mother... and uh, some cheesy power metal? Sure, why not? What a fucking cool cat.
holy fuck, this is a LONG time coming. shame it had to be the home edition, but i've wanted John on here to talk about his insane music taste for a long long time. ty amoeba!!!!
I'm a big fan of John's music and novels, so it's no surprise that I like all of his picks here. Those King Diamond reissues were done really well. Well worth me re-buying them all. I just ordered Steve Roach's "Tomorrow" a couple of hour ago!
I listen to binaural entrainment technology for meditation. It works WONDERS. The entrainment is embedded in the tracks, if guys like that steve roach used binaural, holy fuck
@@codybruner7608 🤔 Should I have sent a written request with an embossed wax seal? I thought yelling out song requests was customary, he actually responded like he was embarrassed for me for liking that song he had written.
@@codybruner7608 The pretentiousness was palpable, was very disappointed. He seemed to really enjoy his merch table with the twenty somethings though 🤔
I love the Mountain Goats. You can tell John just lives and breathes music.
Crappy music
@@VictorLugosi miss me with that. Brubeck slaps

This man is a national treasure
Can we just change this to the "John Darnielle Talks About Things he Likes" channel? I don't think I really need any other content.

I'm surprised he's a CD guy, in this day and age. Good for him. Why not. It has its advantages.

We couldn't believe it took this long either! Glad we were finally able to make an episode with John happen!
Some of us need John Darnielle
I know nothing about this guy or 90 percent of who he mentions, but I loved this video because it has given me new resonances.

John needs to write a concept album about the construction work happening outside his house
If anyone could make such an album interesting, it would be him. I know I'd buy it.

I didn't know John Darnielle was into power metal but I'm not remotely surprised
Its first wave black metal.
Instantly clicked on this
Steve Roach is the only one on John's list that I've heard &/or have owned a cd by. He's on Projekt Records, the American 4AD.

"That's him on Up The Wolves." *shiver*
i cant believe he actually does lives in the woods
Le Guess Who is in Utrecht, The Netherlands. I was there. Moor Mother I saw there. Like that flow.

Still laughed when he called it Belgian.
King Diamond!!!
You gotta open up that Erik Friedlander disc, my man. Release it from the plastic wrap; It's banging.
John is a national treasure. I honestly believe he is tied for greatest living songwriter working today, tied only with Kendrick Lamar.
Moor Morher, excellent choice.
Moor mother!?!! Siii!!
I need to talk to this man. I think we would get along great. Peace in the Northeast my brother. Loved your book as well.
So, when are we going to get an electronica Mountain Goats album?!
John Darniel is slowly turning into Serj Tankian
Why doesn't the Amoeba site call it a bag? It's just shopping cart like every other store.
bvdub
I never pegged him as a King Diamond/Merciful Fate fanatic.
Better Have Some Black Metal In That CD Stack John!
I was thinking the exact same thing.
looking good john. running or diet?
He's been running all year. sometimes posts runs to his twitter, but he's putting in serious mileage!
I got introduced to mountain goats from morel oral funny songs no children just sums up marriage
Frozen Crown is one of the best power metals from Italy talented hot chicks to.
Where's "Taras Bulba", mentioned in the description?
his backyard looks like south arkansas.

John Should do a piece where he sings "Round and round Putin's grave" and then "universal soldier" for the people in Ukraine.

What....no twenty one pilots? 😄
Nice to see someone who has the common sense to prefer CDs over noisy, overpriced hipster vinyl.

awfully...monochromatic, this selection.
Any women?........ Like........... Any?
Well, Moor Mother...
ah yeah I forgot this series isn't about what an artist is currently into, it's about virtue signaling
Moor Mother is a Black woman
Also Frozen Crown
The last time I heard taste this bad, it was a hipster disco 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
👎boo, CDs! 👎💿
Yeah much better to listen to a bunch of pops and clicks on overpriced vinyl.
