It's kinda shocking what he listens to, because its not even close to sounding like Bird's music. I really respect that, takes a huge variety of inspiration and doesn't copy it. Almost all of it is by black musicians, too, while Bird was a classically trained Suzuki Method violin player from the age of 4.
BEST, ONE YET! Andrew Bird is one of my favourite recording artists. The fact that he mentioned Analog Africa & Soundway, two labels I've loved for a along time but wouldn't have figured would have been on Andrew's radar blew my mind! That Paul Simon thing at the end sounds like a joint too. Big ups The Bird & big ups Ameoba.
He is, but just a warning, his music doesn't sound anything like the artists he loves. Totally different style, which is weird and cool that he reaches so far out of his comfort zone. If you need a starting point, my favorite album of his is "Mysterious Production of Eggs".
I saw him live in NYC a couple of years ago. He is brilliant. One of my favorite artists. This song is one of the more recent songs that have gotten attention from a pretty wide audience: ruclips.net/video/zug1B8DSkWw/видео.htmlsi=rJzFOBFnSG8MkuiQ
I've never been so captivated by a video despite understanding quite literally none of what is being said I know nothing about music and clicked because I love Andrew Bird but he could talk music jargon at me for hours his voice is so soothing and his passion for his craft is so touching
I've watched a load of the "What's In My Bag" episodes from Amoeba and this might be the best-produced one. Whoever did the directing and the art direction: well done.
Hey! I was at the Bluegrass Underground show he referenced. I am a big Bird fan, and I am surprised most of the music he mentioned. Interesting to see his tastes is very different from what he plays. Great musician. And for those who do not care for his style, experience him live. He is a talented fellow.
If I ever manage to visit LA, your record store will be one of my must-see spots. Love this series. This one is my favorite so far, but I also enjoyed Silversun Pickups immensely.
I love these because you can really hear how all these different music influences the musician's style and music. Andrew Bird is probably my top two artists next to Tori Amos. Love the way his mind works musically. I'd love to hear one of these from Tori Amos or Portugal The man. They have had some great in-depth interviews as far as music and id love a little more as far as the music they personally gravitate toward.
Andrew,I just want to say, if you can just jog 2-10 minutes every morning before the sun comes up, you'll feel so amazing. It doesn't matter if it's on a treadmill or at the gym. It's so good for you. Scotland foreva. Great Britain hang in there forever. America foreva. Andrew foreva.
I SAW HIM PICK UP SEXTANT, AND HE SAID HE WAS LISTENING TO MWANDISHI IN HIS ESPERANZA PERFORMANCE #superfan. No but seriously, y'all need to pick up Sextant
shoooot when people ask me what type of violinists Im into, I say Jean Luc Ponty! in fact @Amoeba the French jazz-fusion virtuouso will be in Beverly Hills in June!
We just heard back from his assistant that he may be interested but doesn't have any plans to be in LA anytime soon. It's an open invitation, so we'll keep our fingers crossed.
Amoeba You guys/gals rock! I appreciate the update and my fingers are also crossed! I've been sharing your channel trying to help Amoeba grow. ;-) Thanks so much!
That's true. I think what he's referring to is that the three albums from '71-'73 (Mwandishi, Crossings, and Sextant) are sometimes referred to as the "Mwandishi Albums" as they had the same personnel and were all mining similar territory.
We've done episodes at all three stores, but the majority of our resources and crew are in our LA store. We continue to do episodes at the SF store and sometimes at the Berkeley store, but just less frequently. Next week we have a new episode from the SF store featuring Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Okay seriously though, who else thought he had a bashed in skull ala Glenn from The Walking Dead due to the thumbnail? There's a yellow half circle at the top right corner that makes it look like he has a large indent in his skull, just weird man weird.
This is totally fake I was in the store while he walked around and he didn't bee line it to Lester Young. The first record I saw him actually pick up was Ratt "Out Of The Cellar"! I lost him for awhile but I'm pretty sure he was ogling lots of modern radio pop. Lastly he seemed transfixed by a Samantha Fox single. Is this guy a product of the 80's? Stop trying to act all cultured Andrew we know you're digging on the Peasant music too!
Some cats you know are going to pull out a bunch of rock singles or something. I had a hunch Andrew Bird was going to be interesting. He did not disappoint.
I can listen to an hour of Andrew doing What's In My Bag
He does have a lovely voice. :)
Never ever stop doing WIMB!!!
We'll keep it up!
Amoeba now bring Joanna Newsom and Fiona Apple
Anybody who walks into a record store and makes a beeline to the Lester Young stacks gets HEAVY POINTS in my book. New Fan right here, Mr. Bird.
Trundle Bedd wow for a k-9 you have great music taste

Big ups The Bird & big ups Ameoba.
I've never heard of this artist, but he must be amazing, because he has awesome musical taste.
He is, but just a warning, his music doesn't sound anything like the artists he loves. Totally different style, which is weird and cool that he reaches so far out of his comfort zone. If you need a starting point, my favorite album of his is "Mysterious Production of Eggs".
Take a look at his live videos here, when he's sings, play violin and whistles 👍
He’s an absolute legend!
Andrew Bird is the GOAT. I beeline for his section whenever I shop for records so I found this video amusing.

Andrew Birds last Album was great. Definitely worth picking up.
His taste in music is pretty solid too.
Andrew Bird is one of the most gifted and original musician I ever heard.
i love andrerw bird thanbks to one of my friends.. he seems so humble and a kind person.. he is really a great musician!!! Love him so much
Love the editing on all these. The effect with the Studio One Funk cover was so great.
Hey Thanks! That was the handiwork of one of our finest, Jacob. Thanks for watching.
Get sufjan Stevens on WIMB please!!!
We'd love to have him on. We'll try and make it happen.
That would be awesome. Carrie and Lowell has been getting endless spins at home lately.
OH MY WORD. YES PLEASE.
Sufjan Stevens The Dress Looks Nice on You. And so mamy more. Has he been on yet in the interval of comments?
Press and Teddy... what a beautiful album
Get Danny Brown or Run The Jewels on the show.
I had goosebumps for the entire video.
I always connect with A. Bird through his music, but the fact that we love the same stuff is overwhelming.
I've watched a load of the "What's In My Bag" episodes from Amoeba and this might be the best-produced one. Whoever did the directing and the art direction: well done.
i adore andrew bird
this dude is chill
the chillest ❤

Andrew Bid ain't bad either
If I ever manage to visit LA, your record store will be one of my must-see spots. Love this series. This one is my favorite so far, but I also enjoyed Silversun Pickups immensely.
a lovely compilation album currated by Andrew Bird - well I'd buy it..
Woow! Never heard of this guy. But in musical taste we would get along. Keep it up!
Sextant was the first Hancock album I heard. Great album!
It's stupid good.
Loved this program
Me watching a video which Andrew Bird in it, i am always like "omg love this man!" in every 10 second of the video.
So much great info. I'm gonna grab allll of those
I have waited for this !!

Cast your fate to the wind was featured on The Bomber by the James Gang. Fantastic.
Would love to see a part 2.
really enjoyable, thank you! :)
Andrew is hip AF. Very cool.
By far the best what’s in my bag
Ugh Yes!!!!
If Jason Lee and Robert Carradine had a kid, you'd get the wonderful Andrew Bird
great choices :)
Good job!
Sextant, one of my all time favorite.
I SAW HIM PICK UP SEXTANT, AND HE SAID HE WAS LISTENING TO MWANDISHI IN HIS ESPERANZA PERFORMANCE #superfan. No but seriously, y'all need to pick up Sextant
Such good picks!
shoooot when people ask me what type of violinists Im into, I say Jean Luc Ponty! in fact @Amoeba the French jazz-fusion virtuouso will be in Beverly Hills in June!
Great choices.
Bird!!❤
ring the alarm, i'm pretty sure Fugazi sampled that on red medicine
Can you get Colin from Radiohead on the show?
If he likes the early Hancock stuff, he should give a listen to John McLaughlin's Extrapolation. Awesome album.
You guys should try and get John Carpenter!
We tried when he was around for the first Lost Themes record but we couldn't make it happen. Hopefully it will eventually work out. He's great!
Or even better, Mark Hollis from Talk Talk
Run The Jewels would be fantastic.
I would call Marty Robbins a pioneer, not a cheeseball. He was a huge influence on people like Nick Cave and Tom Waits.
Very interesting, I thought he would only listen to baroque, classical music. Pretty cool.
Amoeba School of Music, Prof. Bird 101.
Get any member from radiohead to do one next!!
Yeah! Those guys are always in LA these days! How about PTA and Jonny together?
That would be a dream episode. We can't make any promises but we'd certainly love to make that happen.
i would be forever grateful
what's the tune at 6:07? I'm not finding it..
postalgbv Devon Russel you found heaven
Wow. Did anybody get the Cadillac commercial at the beginning? That was downright insulting.
WIMB is definitely one thing in my bag! Very cool and entertaining channel. Please ask Stephen King. Keep up the great work!
Awesome! Thanks so much for watching. We've looked into trying to get Stephen King before. We'll keep an eye out for the next time he's in LA.
Awesome! We appreciate the help!
I would love to see an Amoeba employee in Wimb
In our first season many years ago, we had a few episodes with employees. ruclips.net/video/20XatWO57xs/видео.html
what's the bird song that this closes with? didn't recognize it! but good stuff. Anyone?
Steven Duncan Saints Preservus
He looks like he could be Lebanese. Bird is English though. I guess our genes really did get around before rome conquered us. Lol. Fuck. Handsome man.
I'm sure you've reached out before, but I'm surprised John Dwyer hasn't been on. Would love to see him, or Thee Oh Sees in general on.
We're still working on trying to get him in.
This guy has great taste. I'm not a fan of his music at all but I could hang with the dude.
Anyone know the name of the song at 6:08? Can't find it anywhere!
flowerfoxes lemme try! I’ll let you know what I find.
Devon Russel- you found heaven :)
3 years late, but it's Saints Preservus.
Well, if no one else is going to say it ... Mwandishi and Sextant are two different albums!
That's true. I think what he's referring to is that the three albums from '71-'73 (Mwandishi, Crossings, and Sextant) are sometimes referred to as the "Mwandishi Albums" as they had the same personnel and were all mining similar territory.
Could be. All great albums either way!
do you only host WIMB at your LA location or others as well? (as a berkeley resident really hoping to see some interviews at the local amoeba)
What is the name of the last video's song please?
why hasnt FlyLo been on? i meaan you got kamasi and thunder, and he's prolly keen on promoting Kuso as thats relatively new.
He's be awesome! We've tried to make it happen more than once and it hasn't worked out. Hopefully someday it will.
Bird: The tenor is just a sheet of notes
Video: cuts to clarinet
ben webster is great too
what's the song at 6:08? does anybody know?
Devon Russell: You Found Heaven
We even like the same music. Narcissistic man crush.
I wonder if/when Andrew Bird will get a Hurdy Gurdy...
Violin Jason Lee has great taste
What's david tennant doing creating dope indie music?
Advaita Manikkath Ambat I can’t unsee it now
Okay seriously though, who else thought he had a bashed in skull ala Glenn from The Walking Dead due to the thumbnail? There's a yellow half circle at the top right corner that makes it look like he has a large indent in his skull, just weird man weird.
Doh! You're right! The overlay didn't work out so well in this case.
We switched it out.
Opening song?
Ryan Wallick Roma Fade
Yooo Herbie Hancock
Goodbye Pork Pie Hat...
MARTY ROBBINSSSSSS
Any fan of Alice Coltrane is a friend of mine

He would be great! We'll try and make it happen.
4:25 - Not... The most Extraterrestrial music ever made belongs to Arcturus, album - The Sham Mirrors
He's come a long way since Squirrel Nut Zippers
Death Grips in my bag?
Tenor saw is one guy...hes dead he got hit by a car and killed in Texas.
I'd like to show him what's in my bag
Doesn't he kinda look like that guy from the adopting agency in Seinfeld?
Man i love Bird but i can't help but think his talent is somewhat wasted by not experimenting.
not my cup of tea, his music is swing and miss for me.
This is totally fake I was in the store while he walked around and he didn't bee line it to Lester Young. The first record I saw him actually pick up was Ratt "Out Of The Cellar"! boring and old farts music !
Some cats you know are going to pull out a bunch of rock singles or something. I had a hunch Andrew Bird was going to be interesting. He did not disappoint.
