Indeed! Watching Wheezy always reminds myself why I started loving to watch videos on RUclips 15 or 20 years ago. Although his content may have changed throughout the years, it still has a vibe that I love and enjoy watching, from back in the old days.
It's a real watershed moment you realize it's not "I don't have time to do X thing" and instead it's "I'm not making X thing a priority right now". Forced me to really confront my priorities and, counter intuitively, stop feeling guilty about the things I wasn't doing. When I realized I was deliberately not prioritizing the thing I wasn't doing somehow it made me feel more comfortable about not doing it, as opposed to feeling like "Gah! I should be doing this thing but I'm just soooo busy!"
I think one thing is how you shift your responsibilities from external occurences "ohh im sooo busy with x y and z and only if they weren't there THEN I would go off" to a more personal way "I am the problem here, I don't make it a priority, I am at fault" Your locus of control shifts internally, making you feel *more in control* of the situation, good or bad and thus you feel like you can change it.
What this video proves is that many of us in your audience need closure. We won’t allow you to do a 30-day challenge and wrap it up with a “meh.” Thank you for the summary, for the closure, and, as always, thank you Nathan Wells.
I used to be a mail man and would walk 20-30k steps a day. Its hard to imagine doing something like this everyday that isn't required for work. Thats a lot of time to walk around everyday for ~15miles
In regards to the non-weight loss, you are actually pretty spot on why you didn't lose extra weight on 30k. Your body does want to maintain homeostasis to some degree and eventually if you increase your output too much, your body will compensation via lower energy elsewhere (higher hunger, lazier motion, lower brain usage). This can vary wildly person to person, in both directions. Its why some people never gain weight (their energy burn shoots up, hunger plummets) and why others struggle with weight loss (their energy plummets and hunger skyrockets). Most people are in the middle of course. Influencers who tell you they know the formula to all of this are lying, its automatic and highly individual and only very early on in terms of research. In Craig's case, we don't know if the extra steps triggered the compensation or his already lower starting weight, or some combo of that (and tons of other factors).
Also he didn't change his diet and he had already lost 'excess' weight from past challenges. Without monitoring before and after body fat percentage which he didn't monitor, we have no idea what impact it had
Just sharing info. I went to see a postural physiotherapist because I was constantly aching while running. Turns out, I had ruined my running shoes by using them also for walking and I don't walk the same way I run so the whole shoe wasn't doing its job properly anymore. I changed shoes and my knees haven't hurt in a year now. So bear that in mind, if running suddenly hurts, maybe you messed your shoes.
You can do it, I'm lucky enough to have ADHD and ASD so I love to walk and pace lol so I get 30-55k a day but I'm definitely an anomaly, I get anxious when I'm not moving lol
Would love to see an update from your year of no alcohol challenge. Do you guys stick to the post challenge rules? Has habits changed? And other questions my brain can't seem to remember right now.
I think the thing about walking or exercising in extreme amounts, is that people overdo it to a point where it don't fit into their everyday routine - so if drains them mentally and physically during the challenge, and after, they revert completely. :) What you want to do, is to look at what you are doing right now. And find ways to increase that to a realistic point. Preferably in a way that feels effortless. For me, my 'baseline' was 5.000 steps a day. So I chose to walk 30 minutes to the bus, instead of 15 minutes like I had been doing. (each way) Since it was only 15 extra minutes, it didn't feel like that much of an extra effort - but it is enough that I now reach 7.500 steps a day. Sometimes more, because the goal I have is realistic and 'effortless' - so it feels 'easy' to walk a little extra. Because it is something you want to do, and praise yourself for doing that extra - instead of punishing yourself for not reading an unrealistic goal. Had I gone from 0 minutes to 30 minutes, it would have felt much more difficult, because the extra time spent would feel like a lot compared to what I was used to. So finding your baseline, and then increasing it little by little, that is how you build a habit. :) (though a challenge is super fun to watch)
We had a couple geese and chickens growing up, the geese were there to protect the chickens and they did their job very well. The chickens were completely free, they had a coop but we never closed them in at night. Never lost a chicken to predators. Geese are fierce! I had a friend who learned the hard way, I told him not to mess with the geese, but he thought it would be fun, as you can imagine it ended with him running as the goose repeatedly pecked him on the butt. 😅

I became a big walker in 2020 and now I look forward to capping off my workday with it. Nice way to switch gears and get my heart rate up. I recently ran a half marathon which I trained a lot for. It was awesome and as soon as it was over I stopped running completely. I just don't love it. It was a challenge and now that's over. I still walk every day though!
Iñ 2021 I walked to work and back from a house other than my own. It was 75 mins each way and then I walked another 30 mins in my lunch break. Added up to 20k steps a day. Walking from work is an excellent way to de-stress too.
Back in October I managed to average 20k for the month. It completely changed my baseline activity level. Getting 30k every day is wild. It takes so long to get sometimes. The main reason I walk as much as I do is because of the improved sleep. If you find yourself having difficulty falling asleep (I had for most of my life), just increasing physical activity can solve the problem. My clock was closer to 30 hours than 24 and exercise can nearly fix that.
same. Been walking 10k+ steps a day for well over a year now and it has also helped me sleep a ton. It's not a perfect fix as I sometimes still really struggle to fall asleep(Or Ill wake up every 2 hours) But walking has absolutely helped on average.
I'm glad you discussed this because my impression of the 30,000 Steps Challenge was that you were pushing yourself past what was beneficial. I recently discovered the second wind in myself, so I feel better about pushing through a challenge - after a rest.
Love your videos! I'm not surprised that you didn't notice any major benefits with increasing to 30,000 steps a day. Seems surprising, but "10,000 steps a day" was chosen arbitrarily, mostly as a marketing thing, and your instinct to say "I dunno, get between 5,000 and 12,000 steps a day" is actually right! This has been studied thoroughly, and for most people, getting between 6,000 and 8,000 steps a day is ideal and more than that doesn't seem to have any long-term health benefits.
Try putting a backpack or rucksack and go up and down hills and use minimalist shoes. You’ll see way more benefits than a paltry 8,000 steps, which is basically enough to keep your body from totally wasting away. It’s not optimal, it’s minimal.

Whenever I turn into a sedentary pig, I start walking at least 10k steps per day and within days it cures my depression, lack of motivation, stomach issues, brain fog, random body pains etc. I guess if you are already active and don't spend your whole day in from of computers, you won't see huge results. I would have loved to see your blood pressure improvements because high blood pressure often does not give you any symptoms until it's too late.
Wish that worked for me too. I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle (computer programmer) but whenever I try to fix it wit things like walking, that just starts taking all my attention and energy. My new resolution is at least 30 min of inline skating per day since it’s the only form of exercise that I enjoy. But it turns into 1-2h per day in several sessions with a ton of time in between them spent catching my breath again. And those 1-2h take up a large chunk of my day. And I don’t feel better or more energized, and my sleep is worse - but I’m sticking to it because I kinda have to exercise, and I hope eventually it’ll start feeling like a positive thing.
@@svenmify Im really bad a maintenance in general, which means Im also really bad at forcing myself into regular exercise. What I did was build it into my already existing routine. So, instead of talking to bus home from work I'd simply walk.. Whats great about this approach it only really "costs" time difference between walking and taking the bus, which is a lot less impactful than if I were to take out an entirely seperate block of time just or walking. After a few months of doing this, your brain readjusts and walking 10k steps feels like nothing... Been doing it for a year and a half by now and I don't even really think about it, its great.
I go for walks barefoot because it lets you use your feet muscles how you're supposed to, and if you don't like walking outside barefoot then I would only ever recommend vivo barefoot shoes, to this day I don't regret getting them and they are probably the closest things you'll get to being barefoot besides sandals. Please check them out, others have made videos on them if you're interested.
I really want to wear more barefoot shoes because they feel amazing but they look so stupid. I wish I didn’t care as much about how they look but I do. Even the “normal” looking ones have a comically wide toe box.
This! i was scrolling comments with this suggestion in mind! ❤ it's interesting to see what Craig, as an expirienced runner/walker, thinks of barefoot shoes
Honestly, will the breaking wind joke finally be the thing that reminds me that taking breaks really will give me a second wind? If anything can, it is this.
I did this for 5 weeks last summer while hiking the colorado trail! 500 miles through the high rockies, best experience of my life! My biggest day was 23 miles, shook out to 58,000 steps... 90,000 feet of elevation climb (total)!
I've been thinking about getting an under desk treadmill, it sounds like that part stuck with you after the challenge - would you recommend it? And also, what brand did you get?
I really respect you for being honest about the outcome. I am sure the temptation to claim it was life changing was there - just because it would have made for a more dramatic video. So, chapeaux good sir.
I did a step challenge that maxed out at 30,000 steps. Even while running 15 miles a week and going for fast walks multiple times everyday, I never hit the 30,000 until I did a 10+ mile hike. That is to say, 30,000 steps while working full time, you really won’t have the time without a treadmill desk.
Such a small world. I randomly came across your 30,000 steps a day video and while watching it saw you mention Blame Society, I was the Dog Trainer and animal handler for one of the Chad Vader episodes. I thought I wonder if this funny and interesting guy lives in the same city I do? When you were walking to meet with them I saw the restaurant in the background and thought - huh…We actually probably live really close to each other! I’m enjoying your Content and if your family ever needs help with your dog you now know a local certified trainer who lives near you 😊
As someone who has been trying to do a time blocking system recently, it's not that I don't have enough time to do things. I now have pretty clear visual evidence I do. It's more like... I don't have the energy nor motivation. I just get these random bouts of low energy during the days where I wanna nap but I try and just can't sleep whatsoever, and if I force myself to stay up I'm usually pretty nonfunctional because when Im tired I crash super hard and can barely think or do anything. I'm not sure what to do, I feel like accomplishing stuff requires the ability to plan ahead and you can't plan ahead when you don't know when or even if your energy levels will crash into the ground.
most health conditions improved by regular walking are chronic health conditions that accumulate and affect you later in life. in addition to your weight lifting youre going to enjoy a lot more health later in life compared to people that don't do these things at the same age
Oh! Im absolutely going to try moving shoes to get new walking shoes. I live about 15 minutes away. I've been doing stepbet challenges for a year now. Yearly average was 2k when I started, and now it's 11k! My step goals are getting up there, and my feet are starting to hurt. Thank you for the suggestion!
I didn’t mention it on that other video, so I’m glad others did. I figured it was just me who didn’t feel like the conclusion was conclusiony. Thanks for answering our inquiring minds!
I think its more about - how are u walking and how much effort u will put in it. Cuz walking slowly on a threadmill is good anyway, but wont do anything for the "loosing weight" part if it slow or just a 0% incline. There was a study that showed that walking under 5km per hour will do something for you...but walking just 6 or 7 will do waaaaaaay waay more. But anyway believe me, it did more benefits to you that you think :DD
A large problem is 1 month is a very short timeframe when discussing bodily change. Even basic acclimation to exercise for the body is around 3 months. This is how long it takes to get used to an external stress. For short terms like 1 month, this is where you see a lot of HIIT and aggressive calorie cut dieting are king. They make extreme use of this short duration. But if you're not doing extreme stuff in that short duration, you're not really going to see significant change. Change always happens, but the amount of change will scale by intensity. And even high intensity might not show significant results for quite a while, and months.
I think you're absolutely right about working out or walking too much! It does makes you hungrier. I found that the more I worked out I was starving. You need to dial it back a bit and find the right balance. Absolutely! Hey if you shave your beard + mustache off , I think you'd lose about five pounds.
I just got back from a big hiking trip, averaged about 20k steps a day for 5 days. That was a good trek, but I’ve settled back to my baseline 10k/day pretty much immediately. 🤷♀️
I appreciate this video. 😂 The last one ended so abruptly but I was like "He's just super done with this challenge and needs to move on with his life" haha Checking out the Nathan Wells video next! Thanks for all the laughs.
As someone from the desert I sure envy you @wheezywaiter. I chose poorly and live near Vegas(I'm a pool boy, man). Walking anywhere from June-September isn't feasible for me. I've been invited by my old Auntie a few times to go walk with the silver sneakers at the mall though and that's okish, but 43 isn't quite old enough.
I’m not sure how accurate most step counters are. I’ve tried Apple, Fit Bit, and a knock off. We all saw, you walked. But, I can sit at my desk and type for 4 hours, and my counter will say I have walked 5k steps and I barely moved my feet, whatsoever. What step counter do you use?
That’s interesting because just having my phone in my pocket or bag it seems to be pretty accurate. It can even tell the difference between going up stairs and going up an escalator.
There is a point of diminishing returns to most activities. For instance: as a Type II, if my blood sugar goes too high, exercise helps. Well, I'm older American (okay, Boomer), so I was inculcated from early spawning that if some is good, more is better. Fine, I'll leave the references to super models aside. However, a little bit of exercise can bring my blood sugars down, BUT - it's not that big a but; old man butt erosion - even more exercise does not correspondingly bring my blood sugar down even more. No. Rather annoyingly, it actually has the opposite affect. So, some may be good; more may be better, but a lot more may actually be detrimental. And 10 miles is a long way unless you've got something to prove. I don't, so I walk about 4.5 - 5.5 miles a couple of times a week. I'm no longer married, so I don't feel the need to be out of the house all that much.

This is the first time I’ve asked a question on a video and got a really in depth and satisfying answer!! Unexpected but much appreciated (I really was curious) and many thanks! 👍👍🌷🌷
I was just thinking that I'd like to see craig try barefoot shoes for a while. the only shoes I buy these days are vivos.
I really want to wear more barefoot shoes because they feel amazing but they look so stupid. I wish I didn’t care as much about how they look but I do. Even the “normal” looking ones have a comically wide toe box.
Life’s short. Wear the shoes!!!
This! i was scrolling comments with this suggestion in mind! ❤ it's interesting to see what Craig, as an expirienced runner/walker, thinks of barefoot shoes
@@RosesAndIvy they look cool, I'd know cause a kid told me my shoes are cool.
I've been buying ASICS Gel-Kayano running shoes ever since I went in to my local sports shop and had a fitting, 20 years ago!
4:28 I was going to mention that I hadn't noticed any eagle punching in the past few vids I'd clicked on...well played.
Honestly, will the breaking wind joke finally be the thing that reminds me that taking breaks really will give me a second wind? If anything can, it is this.
*Ocular ocean* might be my new fav phrase. 👁
Totally using that someday! Lol
I forgot that I was subscribed to this channel. What s pleasant suprise and a reminder of my childhood. Love you and I hope that life treats you well!
As a Canadian, the goose always wins.
I did this for 5 weeks last summer while hiking the colorado trail! 500 miles through the high rockies, best experience of my life! My biggest day was 23 miles, shook out to 58,000 steps... 90,000 feet of elevation climb (total)!
Glad the internet spoke up!!!
WOWWWWW THE EAGLE PUNCH. man that is a throwback joke. crash course was awesome!
I’m gonna be honest: I don’t really care what your challenge or summary is, I just really really like your videos. Keep up the good work!
" a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step!."
WheezeyWaiter - "challenge accepted!"
You can make a chapter a day and short story a day! Videoa you write are a testament to your ability to write!! You can dooo it!
The goose threat is real and we should talk more about it
XD!!! Adolf, I died, and had to rewind the vid to relisten... I really heard ADOLF... then looking af your mouth "ADA OFF"
Here in Sweden, our previous king was called Gustaf VI Adolf.
I enjoyed this video, and now intend to have a good day and a good life and keep myself regular via fiber intake
Finally subscribed after watching you for years on Beer and Board Games. Glad I did!
Thanks so much! I thought I just didn't listen well enough
I sincerely appreciate your videos, I chuckled audibly several times (which rarely happens for me with video content). Thank you!
I'm not sure what to do, I feel like accomplishing stuff requires the ability to plan ahead and you can't plan ahead when you don't know when or even if your energy levels will crash into the ground.

sorry i couldn't stop myself
My cat very much hated that part of the video.
@@lc6428 yeah he was a bit out of tempo, your cat is probably a pur(r)ist
Bro, you actually made me laugh...many times
Thank you, Nathan Wells
Proclaimers! Love it. And love what you are doing on RUclips. So fun.
most health conditions improved by regular walking are chronic health conditions that accumulate and affect you later in life. in addition to your weight lifting youre going to enjoy a lot more health later in life compared to people that don't do these things at the same age
your videos NEVER FAIL to cheer me up! Keep on doing what you're doing because you are GREAT at it!
PowerStep Inserts are the best!
@jillsarah7356 Thank you for the suggestion!
9:14 - Oh, "Ada off" lol
I love the choice of sound effect when you punched the eagle 😂
I didn’t mention it on that other video, so I’m glad others did. I figured it was just me who didn’t feel like the conclusion was conclusiony. Thanks for answering our inquiring minds!
Eagle punch, NICE! lol
You should try rucking for 30 days .Less steps less time, more burn. Easy on body. Nice training for hiking
love the evidence!!!!!!!!!! keep it up man inspiration
I enjoy your humor! Thank you! It helps me mental health-wise. (smiley face!)
I didn't complain in the other video but I appreciate the effort put in to bring closure to this chapter of the channel.
Have you done a video on the 30-day stuff you decided to maintain beyond 30 days, or resumed later because you realized the benefit after quitting?
Hooray for original Craig style and new Craig content!!!! Now where's the alligator pit?
My husband also wears and loves ASIC Nimbus runners.
Thanks for the update! Fun as always 😄
Thanks for the recommendation to watch the last video, it all makes sense now
Shout out to the hitchhikers guide reference.
I have Asics too !
It's enough to build a habit
“Lookit that ocular ocean. Did I just see a dolphin in there?” 😂 I hope you don’t mind if I use that, Craig.

Shakin' that ass" Groove Armada ( Fatboy Slim Remix )
You are on fire with the jokes in this one. I love the honest meh result feedback. 😂
Thank you, I am having a pretty good day, and I AM getting fiber. Hooray!
I think you're absolutely right about working out or walking too much! It does makes you hungrier. I found that the more I worked out I was starving. You need to dial it back a bit and find the right balance. Absolutely! Hey if you shave your beard + mustache off , I think you'd lose about five pounds.
You have time but also dont work a 9-5. Still, props for always sticking to your goals!
I don't know why the Will Power joke made me laugh so much 😂😂😂
I just got back from a big hiking trip, averaged about 20k steps a day for 5 days. That was a good trek, but I’ve settled back to my baseline 10k/day pretty much immediately. 🤷♀️

4:59 "Did you just eat bacon?"
Good job Craig 🎉 watching since 2007
8:39 Until I hear otherwise, I'm just going to assume that Nathan Wells' job is "rabblerouser". 😆
I appreciate this video. 😂 The last one ended so abruptly but I was like "He's just super done with this challenge and needs to move on with his life" haha
Checking out the Nathan Wells video next! Thanks for all the laughs.
The intro song had me smashing that like button so fast!
Thank you again, Nathan Wells 🙌
As someone from the desert I sure envy you @wheezywaiter. I chose poorly and live near Vegas(I'm a pool boy, man). Walking anywhere from June-September isn't feasible for me. I've been invited by my old Auntie a few times to go walk with the silver sneakers at the mall though and that's okish, but 43 isn't quite old enough.
I’m in my 30s and I mall walk. Life’s short, mall walk whenever
My garmin feels impossible to cheat.
Whoa, you must type pretty energetically
@@leahaf808 not sure if this was a joke. If so, lol, but actually the less you move the faster you type. 🙂
That’s interesting because just having my phone in my pocket or bag it seems to be pretty accurate. It can even tell the difference between going up stairs and going up an escalator.
Can't wait for the TED talk presented by Wheezy about doing challenges.
I like filmcows idea about a nordvpn commercial thing when he gives out better options that actually go under free
I loved that little editing trick for "you get what I'm saying" I think I know what you did, but could you share ?
If you want to write a novel, make a video about writing 3000 words a day for a month, and you 'll have yourself a novel.
In Canada “Canadian Geese” are referred to as “Cobra Chickens” for good reason.
THE HATCH IS BACK!!! I wonder if the alligator pit is under construction or nah?
