  • Victoria Azarenka is resting comfortably after being diagnosed with a mild concussion following her dramatic on-court collapse Wednesday at the U.S. Open.
The No. 10 seed was trailing Gisela Dulko 1-4 in their second-round match when she crumbled to the court after clutching her side. Doctors quickly attended to Azarenka, placing towels on her legs, giving her water and applying ice packs to her body. Dulko ran over to Azarenka's aid and appeared shaken as her opponent lay on the ground. A few minutes after the collapse, Azarenka was taken off the court in a wheelchair. She was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a mild concussion. Azarenka later said she had fallen during a pre-match training session and that her condition worsened throughout the match. She was released from the hospital and was resting Wednesday night in her hotel.
The 11th-ranked Belarusian had been a popular pick to make a deep run at Flushing Meadows. Her powerful backhand is one of the best in the game and the draw seemed to set up favorably for her.
Following her release, Azarenka released a statement about her collapse:
I was warming up in the gym prior to my match against Gisela Dulko when I fell while running a sprint. I fell forward and hit my arm and head. I was checked by the medial team before I went on court, and they were courtside for monitoring.
I felt worse as the match went on, having a headache and feeling dizzy. I also started having trouble seeing and felt weak before I fell. I was taken to the hospital for some medical tests and have been diagnosed with a mild concussion."

Anyone who has ever passed out from heat stroke knows how it is. There really isn't anything you can do by the time you feel it coming on. I can't fault her. Professional athletes are normal people and sometimes the body just shuts down. Not cool, at all, very scary. Pass out and hit your head on the ground can be serious injury.

I passed out cold last year from heat stroke and you're spot on, once it's on there's no going back. You can tell your body is redlining so to speak beforehand and if you don't address it, game over pardon the pun. It was nice to see good sportsmanship from the other player and read she fully recovered.

gumbo Exactly, to add on to it all, once you have heat stroke you are more susceptible to heat related injuries.

    • @aisthpaoitht
      @aisthpaoitht 9 лет назад +2

TXNole10 Yep. Hot weather is no joke. One of the parts of being a top player, though, is staying cool and hydrated. Just part of the sport. But yeah once you hit that tunnel vision you know your body has had enough.

You'd think it was the heat, it is a natural assumption, but Azarenka actually hit her head and got the concussion during the warm-up. The effects, apparently, did not hit her completely before she'd played some points.

I’ve had heat stroke and it came on over a few days build up of heat , nowhere near as hot as this in the Uk. I had a temperature of 106F and I was hallucinating it was horrible. I never want to feel that I’ll again. Now I can’t cope with the heat at all anything over about 22/24c and I’m fit for nothing.

  • @2000astrocreep

@EvanescenceDani She felt light headed and had headaches because apparently she went for a run before her match and hit her head an arm in a fall. She was diagnosed with a concussion. My guess is the heat compounded it and made her feel dizzy and dehydrated.

First of all, Vika was not dizzy from heat. She hit her head in practice did not realize it was as bad as a concussion. She had a concussion. That's why she was dizzy and fainted.

At the US Open, during her second round against Gisela Dulko,
Azarenka collapsed on the court. There were concerns that the cause of
the fall was heat-related. Azarenka was taken to a local hospital for
treatment and was diagnosed with a concussion after hitting her head whilst warming up before the match during a sprint exercise

Adam Dawson Do you have any idea what playing in 102° heart can do to the human body? I'm from the high desert where temperatures often climb up into the triple digits in the summer. In a "dry" climate (extremely low humidity), the body cools itself through perspiration. However, in humid climates (such as much of the East Coast), the body doesn't always have the opportunity to sweat and cool down. The problem is compounded by heat reflective surfaces.
      So zip it, Skippy! 😄
