i think you can get rid of the gap if you just do a ch1 and start in the first stitch

It’s true! I didn’t do it here but you can start the row with an extended single crochet stitch to get rid of the gap. I didn’t want to use it here so not to confuse things :)

@rich textures crochet Any suggestions for a stitch ti substitute for a treble crochet that is the same height? I really can’t do trebles neatly and always have a big loop at the top. Want to do a CAL but the pattern has a lace pattern with trebles and my swatch looked awful. 😬
You can do an extended double crochet stitch instead of the treble :) that video tutorial will be up on Sunday!
