Joplin would, from time to time, return to the first strain of MLR for inspiration regarding future compositions (The Cascades, The Sycamore, Gladiolus, etc.) but go in other directions for the remaining themes in his rags, waltzes, and so forth. But with Sugar Cane Rag, there may have been several motivations to compose it the way he did, among them: (1) it came out on the 10th anniversary of MLR’s original publishing, and (2) Scott probably also wanted to prove [especially with his falling out with John Stark notated above] that he could not only continue to be vital as the “King of Ragtime Writers”, but he could return to his greatest achievement in sheet music and better himself in the process. Oh, and (3) money. No explanation needed here if you know Joplin’s life and career well enough.
Very few in number. It's a suprise alone we even have copies of his work that even exists to this day to look back on. Perhaps some of his own marked metronome markings could help dispute his "Tempo Controversy." 😆
