To understand System of a Down and their lead Serj Tankian is to understand how political they are. Serj especially is an Activist more than a Musician. They are very much all about Anti-War, Anti-Nationalism and Anti-Authoritarianism; Serj's four grandparents were survivors of the Armenian Genocide. With System of a Down it is always political.

Passing the 2nd stage these guys got started.... I stopped dead in my tracks, beer (and my girl, both) forgotten! I was Hypnotized and Mesmerized before those albums came out! My girl later found me, she was pissed... I told her to listen... She was as amazed as I was! She was even more pissed at me for not getting her to that stage to hear this band!

This song holds dual meanings. It is both a commentary on the conditions of urban life in the US and compares it to parallels in the complicit events leading up to the Armenian Genocide. Where citizens became content with the status quo and allowed the genocide to take place. It usually goes hand-hand with Chopsuey which is more about the state of urban decay leading to regret and depression and ultimately suicide. The eating seeds part is a direct reference to the popularity of teens eating sunflower seeds in 2001 in the US as well as reports of when people were being kidnapped by death squads. There was one account of a group of men who got out of their truck and pulled out a bag of sunflower seeds to munch on as they watched with zero concern for the people being captured by the death squad "flashlight reveries caught in the headlights of our truck". That is why the majority of the song is so toned down and a bit depressing. It is like "the world has gone to shit and no one wants to do anything about it, so what else is there left to do but sit quietly and wait for my turn?"

A debate as old as time; what exactly is SOAD? Lol i think that's perfectly in line with the bands whole identity being that they pull from a plethora of genres and influences

My sister is a nurse and a mother to a boy. She joined the PTA at her son school and just your normal mother in her 30's raising her boy. But EVEN she has a goosebumps when she listen to Toxicity now. Her favorite song. I infected her with SOAD fever when we were young. LMAO.

I was born in 92 and my mom had amazing music taste. My first CD was Americana which my mom got me at around 7 years old haha.. She also took me to see RHCP during californication tour for my first show. I remember she showed me the toxicity CD. She had heard a song and went out and bought it, she absolutely loved it. It became all we listened to in the minivan! Along with Californication.

I've read that the eating seeds line is in reference to how Armenian people eat sunflower seeds to pass the time or when they don't have anything better to do. In the context of the song, I think it suggest that society is so toxic that people don't have anything worthwhile to do but consume. But I may be stretching it with that interpretation.
There are some bands that were from the mid-2000's you might enjoy including Thrice (anything from the albums "the Illusion of Safety," "the Artist in the Ambulance," or "Vheissu."), The Dear Hunter (anything works but I love "the fire (remains)," "never forgive, never forget," "The Old Haunt," "The Bitter Suite IV and V: The Congregation and the Sermon in the Silt"), Cursive ("the recluse" or "driftwood: a fairytale"), and Brand New ("sowing seasons," "Daisy," and "I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light," ")

I've always heard the "eating seeds" line was a reference to the Armenian people too, but I think the song in general had to do those in power that seem to refuse to recognize or even deny the Armenian genocide ever happened.
Also you're the first person I've ever seen making a suggestion for The Dear Hunter, they are soooo underrated!!

@@xBr3ndan24x I agree, TDH don't get enough mainstream recognition for the amazing music they make. I'd love to see various reaction channels start to check them out. I'm also looking forward to the release of Indigo Child.

Haha great reaction! To me the song is about the chaos of life between the quiet peace before birth and after death and how some people pointlessly try to control it. The last verse also comes across as how they decide to live their chaotic life - aiming to be bright and bring vibrance to others lives, which kind of explains the hype and energy they put into their songs.

I feel like this song speaks to how consumerism and private ownership, how for every day working people as cogs in the system, they’re life’s remain mundane, numb, limited by existing systems put in place by those who came before us. Letting go of the consumer indoctrination pressed upon us, we stop comparing ourselves, our life’s, our relationships, are values…to others, instead letting go of everything we’ve been conditioned to believe we need to be happy, to be successful, to be content… experiencing this “letting go” is liberating.

The "thing" at 6:03, musicians might call it the Pocket or the Feel.
My fellow friends and I we call it the "emmh", that feel of firmly tightening a screw, a bottle with that last action of "emmh".
In scientific terms it is Synchronicity, when you get the vibe.

Love that you guys are listening to them. One of the most interesting post grunge/ metal bands ever. His vocal ability is incredible. Such a great voice. You guys need to be watching their videos. He's such a visual performer. Also the whole gmo thing is mostly a buzzword. Most things aren't truly clean as "organic" and gmo= genetically modified organism, is actually a good thing. It doesn't do terrible stuff to the "organism" to the corn or what have you. It actually helps protect the corn, the crops. It acts as a deterrent from bugs that will eat up all the crops.

I enjoy that y’all look outside the comfort zones. Usually when I listen to music like this my friends that are rap heavy they’re like “this is a bunch of loud music and nonsense screams” but there’s actually aTON of metal that speaks on life more than you get in a lot of modern rap. Just like watching people get into different music lol that’s something y’all do almost every video too
