It's about his grandfather, and how he treated his mom. So he felt the need to give his mom the love she never got from her own father. Her mom and his grandfather never got along until 5 or 6 years before he died.
this is the kind of song that you can just put on, lay down and forget about the rest of the world. it always brings me to tears but i still find it comforting in some way.
I hope that someone going through a tough time could find meaning in this song..all tough times come to an end.Sometimes;we are the ones who have to end how the story unfolds.
I tirelessly listen to this wonderful song, lyrics that hurt, but a melody and harmony that comforts!! I love this band, they are incredible, today at 41 years old, I have the same wonderful feeling as when I was 27 years ago at the release of this majestic song!! I am infinitely grateful for this wonderful song!!
Honestly, one of the best things about The Fray is that they sound amazing without the autotune and effects pop artists today must use to sound even somewhat decent. Isaac sounds amazing on stage and in recordings, and I love that about this band.
@gregjeans2000 "Breathing comes in pairs"- when you breath you inhale and exhale "Except for twice"- when you are born and when you die "One begins and one's goodbye"- When you are born you inhale in and when you die you exhale out. At least that's what I get from it :)
Breathing comes in pairs, except for twice one begins and one is goodbye 60 years of sorrow, he got 5 or 6 of bliss left my mother's mother without so much as a kiss wow. it doesn't get better than that
This song has so prolific with so many layers it's not a joke. At first glance it could be seen a profound song about dealing with a girl with daddy issues and her emotional abuse suffered from a father disappointed in a having a girl/s not a boy/s. Then he reveals he's talking abt his mom and subsequently grandma and it's a commentary on how ur parents psychology can inform how u date aswell (every man grows up to marry his mother) so it could be abt a gf and or his mom and the line where he says breathing comes in pairs is a reference to the grandpas death (one begins on ones goodbye) his grandpa 'left'..... and mom have to be an adult now. she began...but left broken.
wow... i wish i could sing with you sometime... maybe one day.. its crazy the intensity you have ... you seem to feel every single word.. keep doind what you do.
i like the sensory b fore u part..... waiting... the piano and the thats e nuf for now.... reminds me of elliott smith... "leave it alone, just 4 get it" like blind melon... 5 or 6 of nirvana.... i dont no. but its def. elegant. nice job. peace.
@Marilou3000 that song is to his mother who's father was absent. he feels the pain and the pain he had he could put it into words and into a beutiful song. i think he just doesn't feel but he also travels back in time.
I love all thier songs.. the acoustics just make them that much better. Check out another one of my favorites "Say When (Acoustic Live) Hope you enjoy. I play that everyday
@Marilou3000 You can tell he does. When you watch him play, it's always the same feeling he puts in as you get out from the music he writes. It's amazing.
@francescarrchie0226 the song is basically saying how the grl father wlked out on her n he wud of done that..at the end he says after 60yrs the father only got 5 to 6 yrs of bliss n then he left without a word or kiss
can somone explain the meaning of this song to me? i first thought it was about a bad dad-daughter relationship but the last verse confuses me. "60yrs of sorrow....."

One of the most underrated bands. So sad that people do not appreciate what real music is. I love The Fray!!
We appreciate it
One of my favorites!

this is a kind of healing❤i miss them
It's a shame here in India this band isn't as popular, this is rare and genuinely good music in today's electronic/autotune generation.
This song always brings me to tears. It reminds me so much of my mom and grandpa.
Awesome music as always by The Fray...What baffles me is how underrated this band is!
God I love The Fray. I Love this song. The Fray and Regina Spektor should collaborate.
Some things are better in acoustic ♥
