Lyrics:
It was on a wedding night
How they danced by the firelight
And the bride was well arrayed
By her fifteen chambermaids
As her father raised a toast
To the health of all the host
We descended from the apse
To bear witness to the whole collapse
And it’s oh no!
We’re jumped up and ready to go
Where do you think that the money comes from
Do you think it just naturally grows?
And it’s oh no!
We lurk at the end of the row
Listening for whistling, a bang from the drum
And it seems that we’ve caught you in tow
Between the devil and the devil you know
In the back of the bazaar
By the tramps and the muscle cars
We have gathered two by two
Just to figure out what to do
Pretty Saro’s a sotted mess
Gone and spoiled her party dress
All her suitors so entranced
Who will join her in the ambulance?
And it’s oh no!
I’m sure that you’d just love to know
But what will you do when the rumpus is done
And it’s time that we all were gone home?
And it’s oh no!
Kick up your heels in a row
A song that is sung where my people come from
And it’s best when it’s not sung alone
Between the devil and the devil you know
And it’s oh no!
Dash him in one final blow
Stick to the rackets, the heavy’s a hack
And he’s singing pianissimo
For the devil and the devil you know
When the casks have all run dry
And we’ve laid our knuckles by
Standing legless on the pews
Shouting curses to our union dues
Out beyond the city walls
In the grotesque mountain halls
There’s a darkness coming on
So it’s best I think we rambled on
And it’s oh no!
On to the next bloody show
You won’t feel so loose with a noose ‘round your neck
When those cold winter winds start to blow
And it’s oh no!
One more before we go
How can we ever get used to this dreck
‘Cause I’m sick and I want to go home
To the devil and the devil we know
To the devil and the devil we know
To the devil and the devil we know

The brass! The storytelling! The accordion! The vague threat of violence! Ahhh yes, the Decemberists are back.
Haha, I was thinking the same!
big Perfect Crime vibes
Indeed! 🎉
Colin Meloy and this moustache... I am so truly mesmerized that there is new Decemberist music, I will pardon this. Great tune!
It's simple. I see The Decemberists, listen to 5 seconds and bam! hit the thumbs up 👍
This song is a fuckin bop and a half live
Saw them in St. Paul this week, yeah this song was a banger!!
"In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay"...
Exactly!!!!
Yes! I thought the same. I actually played these two songs back to back to compare them. Slightly different, but very close.
Listened on repeat for a few hours - love this!
The tempo reminds me of Mariner's Revenge but with a lovely Latin dance element. Different themes obviously, lol.
Welcome back accordion!
I was preoccupied but I'm here now. Thanks folks!
Unbelievably impressive songwriting and construction. Jesus Christ. Powerhouse
Why I have t seen this band before-I have missed so much!
This was really good live! Very catchy and memorable song. I love the bossanova swing to it. And you have Funk on Sax! Classic Decemberists.
I saw them play this song live in D.C. and I've been obsessed with it ever since
This is so fantastic! Can't wait for the new album!
Just five minutes ago I finished once again reading one of the books in Colin Meloy's Wildwood series. And now a new song! I have missed the Decemberists! Sounding great! I looked up the lyrics and I just marvel at the poetry!
We need them now more than ever!
i just recently finished under wildwood, getting deep into imperium now. what a way to get back into reading!
@@teatimewithianne4763 Same here. Now I'm almost done Imperium.....
@@darlin5167 20 odd pages to go, myself.
Like fine wine they keep getting better as they age !
I love how much fun it looks like Colin is having. This is a Crane Wife quality song, very “A Perfect Crime”. This is some classic Decemberists. That melody is stuck in my head!
If you like the melody, it sounds like Sopor Aeternus’ Le Fleurs Du Mal but sped up. A lot of harpsichord for the baroque lovers!
This is so good, The new album is gonna be great. Thanks for making a music so magical and powerful!!!
first time i heard a song from the Decemberists was Eli the Barrow boy in a World of Warcraft PvP video The perkulator 2 back in 2006. I cant even explain the nostalgia and how much i like this band.
That's when I discovered the. My bought the Crane Wife album and we listened to it on the way home after I finished my first year of college. Those were good times. I've been a fan ever since. There's just nothing like the Decemberists. Such skilled and versatile musicians
Man, i love Nut Squirrel Zippers.
Fav from the new album so far!
This song blew my socks off live!
GRRRRRRREAT!!!!!!!!!! I’m dancing in my seat like I’m coked up
RUclips guided me to your vibe and I am extremely grateful “ Merci beaucoup “ 🕊️
Going to see them tonight in Austin!
lucky bastard. Laugh out Loud. I think the Decemberists played & conquered the Newport Folk Festival in the late '90s.
So good! The band sounds incredible. Though I did miss Lizzy's backing vocals a bit.
Yes or yes. Yes.
yes, but what about yes?
@@aubreyxengland Definitely a “yes.” Bailar bailar, am I right?
Agreed.
I absolutely love these guys. Saw them in concert a week or so ago
Bravo! What a great song.
Whoa. Well done.
Incredible!
Remind me of The Love Me or Die by CW Stoneking. Colin kills it with the storytelling, and I'm very much looking forward to this new album!
Nice! Thanks!
Brutal❤
This made my day :)
always intriguing, can't wait for the new album.
ohhhh this makes me wanna bust a move. awesome stuff as always ! so hyped for the album, i see this one being one of my faves !
Got tix for WP Zoo in August. Can't wait!
I have to admit - I didn't realized Ron Swanson sung like that...
I've always loved this music but never looked up what the band looked like :]
dddaaaammmmnnnnn
Please tell me you’re doing more than just London, uk this year. It’s been way too long ❤
@colin, turn that final chord into a jazz chord to keep a mysterious vibe.
is the electric guitar player in the band playing saxophone in this? Love the Latin/Mexican feel.
Chris Funk has played dozens of instruments in the band at this point. I'm pretty sure he's played sax before.
"For as in the days before the Flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the Ark. They did not know it until the Flood came and swept them all away, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man." (Matthew 24:38-39)
This one hits you like nails on a chalkboard. Up there with their worst.
I've tried so hard to like their post-King-is-Dead material. I've bought every album but it feels like something has gone from them. It's missing some spark.
I don't want to be the "their old stuff was better" fan but I struggle to see how someone could "love" this one especially.
@@medes5597 For me, Oh No! is in the same vein as The Infanta, for example. They had it in them back then and still do.
@@heidlbear that's cool. I wish I could get that from it. To me it's lacking the drive of The Infanta and I've heard them do better versions of things in this song before (the horns, the banjo, the mid Europe folk tinge to some of the instruments)
But hey, we all get something different and we like what we like. If you like it then that's great. I genuinely wish I could get that from it.
@@medes5597”What A Terrible World” is actually a fantastic album. I think, ESPECIALLY after dropping a killer album like “King Is Dead,” What A Terrible World was the best they could do as a follow up album.
But everything after 2015 feels just…. not decemberists. There are some good ones here and there, but no solid album. All we can do is hope this new one is good too. I believe!
