Lotsa people loving this, so now I'm going to make you super jealous by telling you that I actually saw Colin perform this on tour at Cafe du Nord in SF around the time this EP came out.
I was introduced to the Decemberists by a girl in my high school art class. She was annoyed I didn’t understand her musical references and made me a CD with 70 songs on it. This was on the CD she gave me. She went to Reed College instead of junior year of high school. I still remember her assuring me that it was only Miranda because it rhymed with veranda not because Meloy was in love with a Miranda.
In college, I got really close with my friend Heather, who loved The Decemberists and introduced me to them. She died very unexpectedly and I sank into a deep depression, during which I listened to a lot of her music, along with the original version of this song. 💔🙏❤️
My brother kept trying to get me to listen to them. I was not very interested until he took his own life in 2017. I then really took an interest and found the beauty in their music, as he wanted me to. They are amazing. Thanks for sharing your story. Made me smile with a tinge of sadness. Bittersweet.
My favorite version of this song by far is this one. I've been listening to it on repeat for over a year now, and I'm so excited to get my hands on the vinyl. Thanks Colin!
“Share some GREASE tea with me”….from the English ‘greasy spoon’ cafes that don’t wash their crockery adequately, leaving a shimmer of grease on the surface of your cuppa. ;-)
Trudging slowly over wet sand Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen This is the coastal town That they forgot to close down Armageddon, come Armageddon Come, Armageddon, come Everyday is like Sunday Everyday is silent and grey Hide on the promenade, etch a postcard "How I dearly wish I was not here" In the seaside town That they forgot to bomb Come, come, come, nuclear bomb Everyday is like Sunday Everyday is silent and grey Trudging back over pebbles and sand And a strange dust lands on your hands And on your face On your face On your face On your face Everyday is like Sunday "Win yourself a cheap tray" Share some greased tea with me Everyday is silent and grey
Nice-- I really loved the Kinks covers. Too bad some of us can't do vinyl anymore. Guess you have to decide if you want people to hear your music or covet your collectibles.

I have a kid named Heather who also loves the Decemberists. I am thankful she is alive and am sorry for your loss. 🤗

Nice
Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon, come Armageddon
Come, Armageddon, come
Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey
Hide on the promenade, etch a postcard
"How I dearly wish I was not here"
In the seaside town
That they forgot to bomb
Come, come, come, nuclear bomb
Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey
Trudging back over pebbles and sand
And a strange dust lands on your hands
And on your face
On your face
On your face
On your face
Everyday is like Sunday
"Win yourself a cheap tray"
Share some greased tea with me
Everyday is silent and grey

Other than being rabid communists, The Decembrists are such a lovely and talented band.
Is that Pillars strewn about on the floor there?!
