  • Insulin mnemonic for nursing students & nurses on how to remember insulin onset, peak, duration times of rapid acting insulin, short acting insulin, intermediate acting, and long acting insulin. Insulin mechanism of action depends on what type of insulin the nurse is injecting into the patient and how that particular insulin peaks in the system (along with the insulin medication's onset and duration). During insulin peak times, the patient is at most risk for hypoglycemia.

    Dear Sarah,
Thank you so much for your valuable content. I am a pharmacist studying post grad to become a pharmacist prescriber. Your videos are invaluable to me.
I have a very handy way of remembering which insulin are what, that I teach my students.
This is universal code, and it works like a charm.
Any container that is YELLOW is short-acting. That includes Humulin R and Actrapid. Think of a fast Lamborghini.
Any container that is GREEN is slow acting. That includes Humulin N and Protaphane. Think of a slow green tortoise.
Any container that is BROWN is a mix between YELLOW AND GREEN. That is Novamix 30/70 or Actraphane. Think of a cup of mixed coffee.
Hope this is a good tool for you!

I am currently a senior nursing student. I used this video to study for my pharmacology HESI. I went over your mnemonic over and over again and learned every word. When I took the HESI there were questions on there that made me immediately go back to this chart and video mentally. Well I am happy to say I passed! I plan on following you even after I begin working as an RN. Thanks Sara. - signed Farrah :-D

I made sure I clicked on liked button to save it among my other videos that I consider a must have from you and your better half! Long story short... I am 52 and have been a type 1, insulin dependent diabetic for at least 49 years. As can be seen in this video, every insulin is different however may NOT function precisely the same way for all patients. I currently use a rapid-acting and a long acting insulin which I believe are the best on the market. No strange ups and downs or hypoglycemia if I pay attention. IF I am not lazy about my treatment (I work 50 to 60 hours a week which sometimes makes it tough) I can keep my glucose level at between 90 and 120 ALL day and night long without any unique diet. Some of the insulins on your chart have nearly killed me from lack of control. This is why I ALWAYS believe individuals who tell me that they have a hard time controlling their numbers. I'm waiting for the new 30 day, iron reactive, hardening, glucose release insulins. Basically a cure...
