I'm not usually a fan of when animes drastically change tone midway to surprise the audience, it just feels like I've been lied to and it becomes a whole different show, some do it well and most are just sadistic, thankfully dungeon meshi is one of those that are incredibly well written. The show doesn't transform into this edgy festa that one might expect, in fact the comedy tone doesn't leave the show at all (it actually gets funnier), the stakes are up and the situation is dire, but it isn't a complete switch up. As much as it is funny and heartwarming dungeon meshi has always been a story about death, consumption and our place in the ecosystem, the author has done a fantastic job exploring these themes up until where the anime is and if the praise I hear from manga readers is anything to go by it only gets better. It also makes me happy that I don't have to worry about the ending completely dropping the ball since the manga is finished and I hear the conclusion was pretty good.

    • @andrewfantome4020
      @andrewfantome4020 4 месяца назад +4

Yes, the story literally began after Falin was eaten by a dragon. You may also remember the adventurer being digested alive in the second episode. Thankfully it's not Licorice Recall, where many people thought the show's action was "incredible bait and switch" just because they didn't read the synopsis.

@@andrewfantome4020 Yeah, and the fact they're eating monsters, in a way (and this point IS raised during the series to the point the anime is at) makes them monsters themselves. Laios himself, with his monster obsession, which makes him mostly see them in a positive light, is an indication of that, as the monsters in the series are in fact inimical to human (this includes all non-monster races) life. And I may be overthinking it, as I'm always wary of Japanese actually referring Western sources, but Laius (or Laios) in Greek mythology was heir to a cursed line.

For those who want to skip the BH ad: Ad ends at about 5:43-5:45.
    To GlassReflection:
Get your bag, but PLEASE be aware that BH is actually scamming people and try to find other sponsors or maybe look into creating your own merch (T-shirts, hoodies, jackets, sweatshirts/-pants, and blankets seem to be really popular) to help boost your income for your channel. Many people have gone over this--even dating back to about 5 or so years ago by PewDiePie. Nuxanor/Nux Taku also recent covered it and going into a bit more detail that Felix didn't (or may not have known back then) in his video.
Perhaps those in the higher tier(s) of your patreon could get a percentage off your merch once a month or one free item of their choice, to help encourage those who are able to, to subscribe to your patreon. There's also Kofi or Buy Me A Coffee to have a tip jar (Kofi also has a membership option which functions similarly to patreon)
Just some ideas / food for thought!
Love what you do and I still go back and watch a lot of your older videos as well sometimes.
    Stay safe out there!!

Can't say the show had the same effect on me as you describe. The motivation to rescue Falon seemed ever-present, in the simple fact that the party wouldn't be eating monsters and refusing to go back to the surface for some real R&R, the way all other adventurers do when even slightly on the back foot throughout the show. Similarly, it started hinting that Falon could still be saved almost as soon as her new fate was revealed, and the worldbuilding around souls who die becoming trapped inside the dungeon indefinitely blunted the impact of your point that she might be worse off in her new state. As a result, that twist felt more like a reason to extend the quest, with a happy ending still fully in view, rather than a red wedding-esque twist.
That last sentiment might be proven false as the season wraps, and I'm no manga reader with additional insight, but that's where I am at time of writing, with 3 episodes left in the season (I think).
P.s. better help can go suck eggs, don't take their money if you can help it, and no one should give them any for any reason at all.

As someone who immediately went and read the whole manga after first finding and catching up to the anime, I agree wholeheartedly with this, with the sole exception that I believe the two qualities aren't exclusive to each other - and indeed enhance each other because they're happening side-by-side. This story doesn't so much keep one side in reserve for when the other is wearing thin, so much as it just...switches perspectives. The horror is still lingering in the back of your mind when the comedy routines approach absurdity, and the comedy refuses to be silenced when the horror is lying particularly heavy on the heart.

Yuck betterhelp. I was fully onboard until there.
As for DunMeshi, It hasn't gotten an adaptation because I believe the author Ryoko Kui mandated that she finish her manga first. Trigger's been in the mix since at least 2019 and probably on started on this show back in maybe 2022 just as the manga was about to finish.
I don't really feel the comparison with Caster is really apt. I think that's more of a Tatsuki Fujimoto thing. DunMeshi's hopelessness never feels like the author is a massive sadist. Yeah she plays around with the audience but its not just to rip your hearts out. Even the next "Turning point" for the series is filled with humor and that has corpses falling out of the sky and people being crushed.
P.S: I love Tatsuki Fujimoto and he's far from the most emotional torture porn-y author out there, but the man just loves twisting the blade in you just when ya feel a lil bit happy.

Watching this show really highlights to me how much people are distracted by tone. Not me tho, maybe it's the mental illness, but from jump I was waiting for the full heel turn because dunmeshi is very upfront about its fucked up aspects.
Sure it says em in funny ways but like "eating is a privilege of the living" is something said by the narrator To Your Face right off the bat. They make no illusion to not be looking for a half digested corpse From Jump. Marcille makes note to having died several times. They hang up a corpse to be seen by the corpse retrievers in an act of Literal Gallows Humor. And that all just the first episode! And not even everything!
Not even getting into all the foreshadowing to the dragon falin situation that pop up as little bumps to the fun meal time. The various talks of the characters being part of the ecosystem and the eat or be eaten mentality. The way it got progressively more gorry and high stakes in its fights well before the dragon. The EVERYTHiNG with the ghosts!
Anime only, and Maybe I've just seen too many shows that use humor to balance its more serious aspects, but the signs were not subtle at all. It's like when Liaos speaks; if you focus on tone rather than the information given, you will think you were misled. But the show never lies to you, and gives you more than the info needed to know what's up.
Like I can see why people didn't see it coming ig. But it still baffles me a little. They've been saying they were gonna cut it open and pull out her corpse, what do you mean you didnt see the corpse comming?

I started reading Dungeon Meshi after seeing a few episodes and blew through the manga as I enjoyed it so much! I don't see the story so much as pulling the rug out from under us despite showing us chekov's gun. Instead, I kind of view it as the audience experiencing the world a bit how Laios does; not ignorant of reality but appreciating the relative simplicity of monsters in the dungeon in comparison to societal expectations up above, and excited to see Senshi show up.

I had difficulty getting into the story because it was like... why the frack are you guys so calm about the reason you guys are down here? Glad that's not a persistent issue. Maybe I'll pick it up again.

You know what makes it even worse is that it was his fault his sister was eaten by the dragon in the first place.

One note I'd like to make is that people who die in THAT PARTICULAR dungeon don't actually get to GO to the afterlife. They're chained to their bodies, even after those bodies have essentially dissolved, and so their spirits stick around until they go mad. So I'd argue that getting Falin reincorporated WAS the right call, versus letting her remain stuck inside the dragon's stomach, and then in its feces, and then go mad and dissolve into the dungeon.
And that's also one of the major plot elements of the show (unsure of the manga, haven't read it)- that the Great Dungeon is weird for resurrection working so long after death. Resurrection magic isn't even truly resurrection magic as we'd understand it in different settings- it's just healing the 'dead' body back to a state it can live in and restarting things, trusting that the spirit is stuck to it enough to re-inhabit the corpus. I believe this is explicitly stated, even.
So I think that Falin being essentially turned into a chimeric monster (Marcille touches on this when going over the options for making familiars) WAS the better outcome. I believe that this is all being tied together with the introduction of Izutsumi, the peaceful Village monsters, the origin of the Mad Mage's madness, and the concepts of self, incorporation of new ideas, and growth beyond a stagnant ideology.
Remember, Marcille's 'ancient magic' IS NOT the reason that Falin goes rampagy- it's because the Mad Mage commanded her to do so, which he was only able to do because of the use of HIS dragon's meat in her reincorporation. If Marcille and the party had been willing and able to return higher in the dungeon and get, say, a goat or cow down there to use instead, Falin would have been absolutely fine.

(A bit pedantic, But having caught not fully up with the anime, I'm getting the impression (from a few sources) this is a difference: as in the manga, their was no "forbidden resurrection", the forbidden magic was just to replenish mana, because she realised there was less than no time to waste and it might already be far too late; the only unorthodox element was using monster meat and that in itself wasn't the problem, until the mad mage intervened. Not that that changes your narrative point at all.)

There are "OH SHIT!" and many flavors of it. but the ones that leave a chill down your spine, when the veil peels away and you see what is beyond.
Those oh shit moments are rare ... and dare i say ... delicious!

The moment earlier in Season 1 when it is explained that the entire dungeon is subject to a curse that keeps souls of slain people bound to their bodies really got my attention. "Wait, what? You're just going to try to slip that by us simply as an explanation for how resurrection magic works?" It kind of felt like it was more important than that, and eesh, looks like that's just the beginning of the complications.

Actually, even dead, it's stated that the dungeon has a magic system preventing souls from leaving, making it possible to resurrect someone who died inside since the soul didn't go to the afterlife, that's the reason there are so many ghosts, being many of them from previous adventurers who weren't resurrected. If you die in the dungeon, there's no afterlife for you, you are trapped there.

The greatest achievement of Delicious in Dungeon is that the humor and comedy still remain. In fact, I'd argue that it gets even more pronounced, more entwined in the plot and drama as the story evolves. Ryoko Kui did a masterful job balancing and intertwining humor and drama in a way where they support and improve each other. The humor humanizes dramatic stakes, and the drama makes the humor kick harder in return. Really, it's beautiful.

Another anime that does something similar is Journey of Elaina... a couple cheerful/ funny/ slice of life/ journey episodes and then a dark one.... a few funny ones and then an even darker one.
FMA is like this sometimes too...
I feel like it's better way to tell a story, it creates contrast between the horror and fun, enhancing both. If the whole anime is jokes then the "fun" eventually becomes the norm and isn't that funny any more, same with horror... after watching a town getting blended by demons for 4 episodes straight, on the next episode if feels like "meh", even if the visuals get even more hardcore.

well except the curse of immortality thats over the entire dungeon, that binds people souls to the bodies (And is what makes resurrection magic so common/easy in this dungeon)
and its hinted at that even should the remains be compleatly destoryed the soul is still trapped within the dungeon as a ghost.
so really she would suffered either way, this way is just worse.

hope it keeps going, read and loved the whole thing! Kept telling people chapter 87 owned Disney's Wish, or ww1984..
worry about the last third though, the manga's setting up for the finale, introduce a pantheon of side characters, story focus was bouncing around, cooking gone from shock value to philosophical, and we rarely rarely rarely see Marcille's meme reaction anymore.
A recipe for viewership dropping when the hook is no longer ever-present. Hope the anime team is not forcing change the story to spoon feed us Marcille meme. We all saw what happened to SpyxFamily s2.

I absolutely love Delicious in Dungeon. It took me a bit to get settled with the tonal shift which I kind of figured from the beginning with our beloved group's mission to save Falin. On the other hand, we have Lycoris Recoil. Cute girls (albeit assassin girls) doing really cute slice of life things. Mixed with violent terrorist attacks on civilians? I had a much more difficult time dealing with that wild tonal shift.

Considering Bleach received an adaptation of its final arc without the need of a remake of the decade old series, I don't see why HxH can't be the same, I mean, the 2011 version is good enough to be on par with most anime coming out nowadays. They can just keep adapting the story from the point where the anime concluded unless there's some plot point (that I'm unaware of since I haven't read the manga) that would make an adaptation that immediately follows the anime's ending complicated.
