Recommendation from a professional mother of two. I'm guessing you wouldn't have time to fly in grandparents to watch the baby. So I would say take Candice and the baby to Miami for two nights. I'd stay at the Fontainebleau or the St. Regis. YOU do the packing for the trip (Candice can buy anything else she needs at the shops) and plan everything. You send flowers to her work that morning with a note letting her know that you want to meet her and the baby at a certain time then take her to the airport (if you want you can give her an hour to pack anything extra you might have forgotten--but you should be completely packed). Have the hotel prepare the room with a birthday surprise for Candice. The entire weekend you get up with the baby, feed the baby, put the baby to bed, bathe her etc. When the baby needs a nap you go up to the room and Candice gets to stay by the pool, etc. Also, importantly, no work for the entire trip. Get a babysitter (recommended by the hotel) for the baby for when you both go out to dinner. After the trip is over you make an album with pictures of your beautiful two girls (and a few of you as well).

+rrijke Hi Rrijke. Thanks for your comment. I just polled my students and about 75% said they were helpful or very helpful. The other 25% didn't watch them. I'm planning on including some more techniques for bivariate and multivariate statistics. They are relatively amateurish (and they take a ridiculous amount of time for me to make and edit) but hopefully they will help my students that can't make it to office hours!

One of the best presents I gave my wife was a completely unplanned road trip. Here's what I suggest... line up a babysitter for a 3-day weekend, pack casual clothes, gas up your car, and then once you're in the car, decide what direction to drive. And just do fun, different stuff. We had a few rules... 1) only 1 photo per day; 2) no texting; 3) no phone calls. Be in the moment. We did this 2 summers ago and it was great - camped in the Smokeys, surprised friends in Chapel Hill and Tallahassee, hiked, at at sleazy restaurants, met cool people, stayed at 5 star hotel, 2 star hotel, rode a tractor, just fun crazy shit.
You can make her a porch swing for the tree in the back yard at the New London house. She is always sitting out there with Francine. It's DIY so it's sweet, but it would also be functional. I have a how to video showing how to make one on my channel (plus free templates on my website), if you want to go that route. Or, you could make a growth chart ruler. That way it's something you've made that can be put on the wall to track Francine's height as she grows (I also have a video showing that process as well). Either way, don't go with nothing. : )

The next day get her a nice "day after birthday" present. That way you can respect her wishes and fulfill your own desire and need to get her something for her birthday at the same time.
Personally, I think the best gift is an experience, if she owns a lot of 'things' another thing won't hold any value. 1. Hire a babysitter for the night 2. Book a table at her favourite restaurant (even if her favourite place is KFC or something and you don't have to book just go where she really loves) 3. On the day of her birthday (i'm assuming you'll be at work during the day) you should leave a camera with a short video of you explaining what the plan is and where she needs to meet you - somewhere she will definitely see the camera - maybe leave a note on her desk or something at work with *watch me* 4. Go to her favourite clothing store and get them to help you pick out an outfit and leave it at home for her 5. Meet her at the place you know she likes, and put your phones/cameras away and just have a nice meal together with no interruptions (other then checking on francine obviously) It would take effort but if she doesn't really want 'anything' I think just a night where you can enjoy being alone together would be a really special memory :)
Give her a day of adrenalin: Start by screaming at her to wake her up. She will be really pissed and that is the perfect base for everything that comes after because after such a move she will love everything you do. So next you will serve her breakfast whatever she loves, you are the expert. Then you continue with some adrenalin sport like bungee jumping or whatever is around the city. After this activity she will be high of adrenalin so just give her a break. Take her to a streetfood thing for lunch and talk with her about how crazy your journey was, the last X years you spend together, collect some romantical memories and talk with her about it. After that you need to need to get her on high adrenalin again, so go to a racing track where you can sit next to a pro how will do some crazy donuts or high speed breaks and so on. Bam, adrenalin again. And in the end of the day you just chill together as a family on the couch order some pizza and watch some netflix or her favourite movie. Perfect harmony of adrenalin and romance.
Hey Casey, I know this was a long time ago, but I think next year you should get her a Full Keyboard. Not a grand piano, just a cheap full piano. Give her your first camera, but kind of symbolically If that makes sense. Give it to her as if you are giving back all the things that you two worked hard together for. Give it to her as a way of showing how much you appreciate all she has done and sacrificed for you. Give her an object that is so special to you it truly represents how special she is to you.
Organise a baby sitter, then take her on a helicopter ride to a beautiful location where you have set up a romantic dinner or lunch spot with all of her favourite food. Annnd maybe top it off with a simple piece of jewellery :)

In the day I took her to an art gallery and tall skyscraper with a view over London whilst enjoying a glass of champagne, bought her flowers and perfume, took her chocolate and wine tasting and finished the evening by going to restaurant followed a John Legand concert!
I forgot to add I wrote the senses on pieces of paper and put them in her birthday card in the morning. I didn't tell her what they were for and she figured it out as the day went on!
Give Candice some me time. You said recently she doesn't get much. Take away all of her responsibilities for 24hrs, then have some quiet time together, no cameras, in one of her favorite places.

Get her what you do best. Stories, kind of a scavenger hunt where every piece you collect has a special meaning of your history together, a story that you build with just pieces of paper, or a meal or a small present ever an A/C, where on the way she remembers why she is so special to you and bring deep emotion into what your relationship has been in bad an good moments. First of all my wife gets a birthday week. She is too important to be fully recognized in one day. I try and purchase her a gift for each day of her week. Nothing huge but a little something. As for gifts, I try to find things to solve those little problems she has in life. Example... She likes to know what time it is at all time, but she can't see the clock without her contacts when she goes to bed. I bought her a clock that projects the time on the ceiling in large numbers. She doesn't know how she ever lived without it. It not a huge gift, but it has a bigger impact on her life than an expensive piece of jewelry in the drawer. Not only does it fix her daily frustrations it proves to her that you're listening and have put some thought into her gift. Not really a gift idea, but for me it's been a very successful thought process.
Do a treasure hunt around New York or send her to places that mean something to the two of you or her specifically (since it is HER birthday). Then you can also VLOG it (yes please)! You could start right when she wakes up, leaving a clue or note on where to start. Then at each stop along the treasure hunt send her to the next clue/desitnation or have someone capture her reaction on video. At the end Francine's beautiful smile will be awaiting her.....just a thought and something i have done in the past. She wishes she had more sleep... is there a way you can get her an extra hour in the morning? Something that will help her streamline her morning routine so she can spend more time in bed and less time getting ready? Or I just honestly don't need more stuff for the sake of having stuff. So, to expand on my comment above, instead of stuff for the sake of stuff, focus on an experiential gift. And I don't mean a one-off, flashy demonstration that anyone could do for anyone else given the right resources... Do something that shows you really know and get *her*. That you're paying attention to her needs and frustrations, and that you're there to support her and make her life better. Does she wish she could spend more time with her parents, or Francine? Make that happen. Maybe her favorite place for lunch is too far for her to get it every day. Have a courier bring it to her every Friday. Does she miss a best friend from Texas? Well I got some ideas. First of all I wouldnt buy any object or sth like that, because this stuff just gets boring after a while. You could maybe fly somewhere to the Great Lakes with her or just enjoy the sun in the Bahamas. I seriously think that she needs some relaxed moments because it just seems that she has pretty much stress at the moment.
One full day with NO VLOG. I know it is blasphemy. But I feel like cameras must get in the way of your family all the time. Take her everywhere and just BE WITH HER. We will survive for a day. i promise.

I used to play it the extraordinary gentleman style for my exes' b'days a couple of years ago. You know.. giving the super thoughtful.. personalized.. mind-blowing present type of treatment. But then they would change and basically shun on anything special I would do, like they were taking it for granted. So nowadays, I just go with a 3-letter "HBD" whatsapp message and it's been working like a charm ever since.

One of the best presents I gave my wife was a completely unplanned road trip. Here's what I suggest... line up a babysitter for a 3-day weekend, pack casual clothes, gas up your car, and then once you're in the car, decide what direction to drive. And just do fun, different stuff. We had a few rules... 1) only 1 photo per day; 2) no texting; 3) no phone calls. Be in the moment. We did this 2 summers ago and it was great - camped in the Smokeys, surprised friends in Chapel Hill and Tallahassee, hiked, at at sleazy restaurants, met cool people, stayed at 5 star hotel, 2 star hotel, rode a tractor, just fun crazy shit.
You can make her a porch swing for the tree in the back yard at the New London house. She is always sitting out there with Francine. It's DIY so it's sweet, but it would also be functional. I have a how to video showing how to make one on my channel (plus free templates on my website), if you want to go that route. Or, you could make a growth chart ruler. That way it's something you've made that can be put on the wall to track Francine's height as she grows (I also have a video showing that process as well). Either way, don't go with nothing. : )

Personally, I think the best gift is an experience, if she owns a lot of 'things' another thing won't hold any value.
1. Hire a babysitter for the night
2. Book a table at her favourite restaurant (even if her favourite place is KFC or something and you don't have to book just go where she really loves)
3. On the day of her birthday (i'm assuming you'll be at work during the day) you should leave a camera with a short video of you explaining what the plan is and where she needs to meet you - somewhere she will definitely see the camera - maybe leave a note on her desk or something at work with *watch me*
4. Go to her favourite clothing store and get them to help you pick out an outfit and leave it at home for her
5. Meet her at the place you know she likes, and put your phones/cameras away and just have a nice meal together with no interruptions (other then checking on francine obviously)

In the day I took her to an art gallery and tall skyscraper with a view over London whilst enjoying a glass of champagne, bought her flowers and perfume, took her chocolate and wine tasting and finished the evening by going to restaurant followed a John Legand concert!
I forgot to add I wrote the senses on pieces of paper and put them in her birthday card in the morning. I didn't tell her what they were for and she figured it out as the day went on!

First of all my wife gets a birthday week. She is too important to be fully recognized in one day. I try and purchase her a gift for each day of her week. Nothing huge but a little something. As for gifts, I try to find things to solve those little problems she has in life. Example... She likes to know what time it is at all time, but she can't see the clock without her contacts when she goes to bed. I bought her a clock that projects the time on the ceiling in large numbers. She doesn't know how she ever lived without it. It not a huge gift, but it has a bigger impact on her life than an expensive piece of jewelry in the drawer. Not only does it fix her daily frustrations it proves to her that you're listening and have put some thought into her gift. Not really a gift idea, but for me it's been a very successful thought process.

At the end Francine's beautiful smile will be awaiting her.....just a thought and something i have done in the past. You need to do a mini scavenger hunt using videos and clues leading her to a fun secluded place where you'll be waiting with flowers and dinner. Or maybe you can have a model space-ship ready for launch when she arrives. Like the trip the two of you took a few years ago. That would be cute.

A day long scavenger hunt. include small "gifts" like chocolate or special candies. go to key places at key times. Say, her favorite restaurant for lunch and have friends and/or family there (surprise). be on the empire observation deck for the sun set. Then, the last stop would be home where she find a letter from you telling her what you mean to her, highlighting the events of the past year.

Then organise some of her family members to surprise her on the boat and have a good time cruising around the area with a private band or DJ :)! something you will never forget, cheaper than helicopter joyride maybe and your gaining a better view of new york/manhattan than being on land ;)
I feel like Candice really appreciates well made food. Not necessarily super high end fine dining or whatever, but just fresh, good ingredient, creative meals. So.... why not have a chef come in and make the two of you some of her favourite foods for dinner?
Well I got some ideas. First of all I wouldnt buy any object or sth like that, because this stuff just gets boring after a while. You could maybe fly somewhere to the Great Lakes with her or just enjoy the sun in the Bahamas. I seriously think that she needs some relaxed moments because it just seems that she has pretty much stress at the moment.

I used to play it the extraordinary gentleman style for my exes' b'days a couple of years ago. You know.. giving the super thoughtful.. personalized.. mind-blowing present type of treatment. But then they would change and basically shun on anything special I would do, like they were taking it for granted. So nowadays, I just go with a 3-letter "HBD" whatsapp message and it's been working like a charm ever since.
yeah, dont spoil them, just keep it simple and keep it real. "HBD bby" is all it takes
My suggestion: organise a (surprise) party or diner with her best friends & family. Like invite her parents over from South Africa. Her sister. And get her a nice gift to go with it all.
