    Aw, you got emotional during the Angel/Buffy scene when he hugs her. I loved seeing that even though you are not a shipper. I love that tear streaming down Sarah's face. She is such a good crier. Funny when you said you wanted to jump through the screen and choke Pete and then Angel does that at the end. :)

    Pete, a dedicated shopper at Gaslights R Us.
    And I don't think Buffy was blaming the girl with the "broken" comment. The "broken" was the result of the continued mental and physical abuse just like a sucking chest wound is the result of being stabbed in the ribcage. She was wounded physically and mentally and "broken" was simply teenage shorthand for that.

  • @darrellpalmer

    Last season, one of the themes was how Buffy blamed herself for Angel's behavior. Deep down she felt that she had done something wrong that led to Angel losing his soul. I think that when Buffy says what she did to start your rant, it came from her own frustration with herself. She saw the victim making the same mistake she did in taking the blame for someone else's behavior. I think the situation had become very personal for her and she lashed out. It wasn't the right thing to say, but the writers are not making an after school special. I think it was appropriate to the dramatic storyline that her character would say that...and I think that it was appropriate for you to rant. You just go on being you because that is what we are here for. No apologies needed.

  • @ernesthakey3396
    @ernesthakey3396 9 месяцев назад +7

    Don't have to apologize, you stood up and spoke truth. Well, you didn't literally stand up, but you know what I mean.
    I can see why "broken" would be triggering and not a great way to describe the victim. The important thing is that if they are broken in some way, IT IS NOT THEIR FAULT. It is totally the fault of their abuser, no question whatsoever. It was done TO them. And all too often it is a long process down an ever worsening path, and the longer it goes on, the harder it becomes to break out of the pattern, to escape from that path.
    My heart goes out to anyone in such circumstances, and I hope they can get free, whatever it takes. And they shouldn't have to do it alone - reach out to get help, please.

  • @cruzinbosco
    @cruzinbosco 9 месяцев назад +10

    Although I don't rewatch this episode often because it is very triggering, there is so much about it that I really enjoy. As for Oz and his parents, remember he is a full year older than the others (it was stated in 3x1 that he was held back) so he may not even be living at home at this point.
    I agree about the victim-blaming. Whew. It hurts. But I don't expect two teenage girls to understand all this so I do my best to forgive Buffy and Willow here.

      @samrobotsin 9 месяцев назад +4

      This is another case of Buffy projecting. She's furious at Debbie the same way she's furious as herself for hiding Angel, her boyfriend who abused her. It's not so much the audience is supposed to agree with Buffy. Instead Buffy is doing something she knows she shouldn't. Eeryone has the takeaway that Buffy is being harsh here, just like her reaction to James in I Only Have Eyes For You

    As you can see how the show has improved so much in terms of character development, plot lines, cinematography etc. S3 was excellent with a consistently good standard of episode. The metaphor here used in a homage to Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde of the abusive partner shown in a great episode. This show once again mirrors serious social comment, some great scenes in this episode, the best is when Angel falls to his knees in front of Buffy and the camera pans out with the dead couple on the floor. Really good writing here.

      There was only a designated outside area for smoking when I was in high school. One of my cousins lived in a smaller city and his high school had an actual smoking lounge. Early 90s. You could smoke in the malls back then, too. My mother said you could smoke in the grocery store and on the bus when she was in her teens/20s in the 70s.

    I think the early clues about Pete are his general assholey comments- Scott’s mom being a “fruitcake” and calling Buffy manic-depressive. But when Debbie is saying she doesn’t like the things Platt says, I imagine that he was imploring her to get out of her abusive relationship. Also her having insomnia as well.

    I don't know where this falls in your views, but I've always read Buffy's comments as her over identifying with Debbie --- she still feels responsible for Angelus on some level, and projects her feelings of guilt for letting it go on so long (and for not wanting to tell anyone now, that he's back, even through he appears dangerous) on Debbie. So, she's talking to herself in some way? Which, admittedly is definitely not healthy, but then the closest thing to a mental health professional she's seen in the last three years got killed after one session.

    I have comments, but it's going to sound very stream of consciousness.1) I turned on the TV this evening and Dancing with the Stars was on, and Alyson Hannigan was one of the contestants! She is in very good shape. She's two years older than I am and I feel like my body is falling apart half the time. 2) as someone who has worked in the domestic violence field for almost two decades, I appreciate that they tried to portray dating violence here, but I do think that it did sound like a bit of victim blaming and not just observing that the abuse has broken her. She is not responsible for her abuser's abuse, and it's a lot harder to leave an abusive relationship than most people realize. Even in high school. And saying "don't get hit" is never helpful. And you'd think Buffy would have more compassion given that her ex-boyfriend ALSO stalked her and killed Willow's pet fish AND Ms. Calendar as a threat to Buffy and a way to prevent anyone from helping him to change back to the way he was before he lost his soul (rather like how the pre-Jekyll and Hyde abusive boyfriend guy might have been before developing his formula and experimenting on himself with it). And 3) Sorry school sucks. I know the feeling well. I hope it gets better for you! And 4) For anyone who wants to see a high school abusive relationship storyline done right, I cannot sing the praises enough about the Netflix series "Heartstopper". Its treatment of high school dating abuse and contrasting healthy relationships and friendships is among the best I've seen anywhere. Anyway, sorry for the long rambling comment - a bit sleep-deprived just now. Great reaction as always!

      I think a lot of people get down on Buffy actually here. And typically in the real world if Buffy would say this to a person it would be even worse. However, this is not a normal scenario. There is a murderer on campus that they have to find immediately. I don't fault Buffy for not handling the situation more delicately, she needed to find Pete and tried an aggressive approach.

    • @maidden
      @maidden 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@crosisx2714 Not the point. "Buffy" is a fictional character. The writers are expressing their opinion through SMG, and their opinion sucks. They do it again through Kate in Angel, this is what they actually believed. Hopefully they've learned and grown since, but it's good to point out a shitty thing when you see it.

    • @crosisx2714
      @crosisx2714 9 месяцев назад

      @@maidden I don't see it that way but to each it's own. If that were the case every time a character does something bad you can blame the writer as if it's their opinion.

    • @maidden
      @maidden 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@crosisx2714 There is such a thing a context. Here Buffy is being framed as correct in stating that the abuse victim is "broken" and giving up on her. Buffy literally turns her back and walks away from Debbie, while Willow comforts and brings her along; an act of kindness later shown to have been a mistake, as Debbie shoves Buffy when she had a clear shot at Pete, leading to Debbie being punished with death.
      These writers are not exactly known for subtlety. When they have "a message" they want to convey, they're as gentle as a railroad spike through the head.

    I agree with your point about a couple of Buffy’s lines feeling…off., I /want/ it to be an attempt to imbue Buffy with less patience as a result of what she’s been through recently, because then it’s a failed attempt at something interesting and not less-than-ideal writing.I can’t quite make myself believe it, tho.

There is a minimum age in the US, but it's varied in both directions over the years, and also by state. It wasn't until 2019(!) that it was set @ 21 at the federal level. I did a bit of digging and according to a 1986 document titled "Smoking and Health: A National Status Report: 2nd Edition: A Report to the Congress", most states had set the minimum age between 16 and 19, and a handful of states had no restriction at all (if you're reading that document, the relevant table is on page 71).

    You rant away, friend. The attitude towards victims of domestic violence wasn't great back then and so obviously that whole aspect hasn't aged well.
    The reason I give Buffy a pass on woefully mishandling her "confrontation" of Buffy, aside from the fact that she's a character saying the lines that were written for her, is that she's 16 and has been privileged in her life to not experience domestic violence (Ted episode aside). She's approaching the whole situation from a slayer perspective "must find bad guy, must eliminate evil" and does not have the emotional maturity at this point to recognize that Debbie needed better from her.
    But do you get why the plural of beasts in the title now? As Giles said, you have those that can and want to be redeemed (Angel) and those who have no humanity left in them (Pete, though debatable on some level). And you have Oz, who is on the one hand the opposite of a beast, but who can turn into one through no fault of his own.
