Thank you Natalie. I’ve been using knit companion for a couple of years now, but learned some new things from this video. Your presentation is clear and easy to follow.
And so you don’t have to take your hands away from your knitting, you can click the mic on the right and tell it to go to the next row/round or even to go back.
Haha start small! I started out using the free version and there’s a great slider highlight bar. No set up needed! Then I’ve worked my way to new skills!
Thank you for this video. I had previously tried to use this app, but couldn't figure it out and just gave up. I quit too soon apparently. I will try it for my next project!
You can also create highlight bars for your size and stitch counts, and or create a highlight, set it to opaque and block out sections that don't pertain to what you are knitting instead of using the scribble tool to circle your size or x out.
I have had knit companion (the paid upgrade) for some time and did not realize all the things I could do with it. I knit lace quite often and your tips today are going to be so helpful. Thank you so much.
I’ve had the pro version for a couple years and did not realize it could put the number of knits when there are a bunch. Thank you for showing that! Life-changing!
This was so helpful! I've used Knit Companion for a while and I love it, but I never realized you could hold and drag to make a magic marker that's multiple stitches wide. So cool!
I have been using KC for some time now. I love it and only use it now. Even if I find a pattern in a magazine I snap a pic, save as a PDF and save it into KC so I can use it. Thanks for the video. 🧶
Wow! Thank you so much for this video! I was able to set up a chart on my iPad while I watched you on my phone! Game changer! I’ve had trouble following KC videos so this was so helpful!
Natalie! I’ve been paying for Knit Companion for years now, but never learned to use it. I’ve been using only the current row guide! I too have had All of the Lights + bought yarn ever since Joji released the pattern. Thanks to you, I’m amazingly ready to dive in. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
knit companion changed the game for me. im actually making a textured sweater with lots of charts right now and i love the highlight feature to keep me on track
Thank you for this tutorial. Just in time too! I’m starting the Instant Crush pullover and I was playing with excel for this. I’ve had the Knit Companion app forever, but never really knew how to use it.
This is a great tutorial! I was familiar with creating chart pieces, but didn't know about magic markers, I know trying to zoom in and count how many plain knit stiches is such a pain and slows me down, this awesome!
Wow Thanks for this tutorial. I have been using KC for a year but not using any of these features. I love complex patterns but have made mistakes counting rows or stitches and left and right cables. Can't wait to set up my next project.
Thank you for this tutorial! I have been using KC several years (I cannot imagine how I would have knit the Ixchel sweather without it as it has a full alphabet worth of charts) but never bothered to find out how the magic works :) Now i now!
Ugh! I agree! I really wish she could allow a callab and do a knit along with this!!! I love her work but it can be a little intimidating. I got her pattern for the long summer cardigan after I saw yours ❤ and I just got her new cabled cardigan sweater pattern….some of us need help! Lol
Hey Natalie, thank you for all of your videos, I always enjoy working on a project while watching your channel. I just wanted to let you know that most of these features that you have mentioned are only available when using Knit Companion on an Apple device, not an Android device 😢 I can't wait to see how your caridgan turns out!
@@knitCompanion - thank you for letting me know. After doing a lot of digging it looks like these features (or most of them) are only available on the "Setup + Essentials" version of the app (I only have the "Essentials" version as the "Setup + Essentials" wasn't yet available when I purchased it late last year).
It used to be that a lot of the most helpful features of NC were not available on Android devices. Are all the amazing tools that you showed in this video available on Android devices now?
I have the app on both my phone and my tablet. Do they sync so that I have exactly the same information on both devices including where I am in the pattern?
A wee note about lace charts: I really like them when working in the round, but when I am working flat, my brain gets scrambled by the knits and purls. When working flat, I'm much happier reading the text lace pattern. I use @Melmakesstuff 's technique of setting up a paper grid. Old -fashioned but it does the trick.
So I love using kc, but I was wondering why my patterns only show up on my iPad and don’t show on my iPhone…am I doing something wrong or do I need to do something else to get them to show in both places? Thanks!
Hey! I believe if you turn on “iCloud sync” on both your phone and iPad it will sync automatically. For android devices there may be something similar.
@@KnittyNatty Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately I am using Android devices and I have not seen this option yet, even though on the website it says this is included in the free version. I will keep looking!
Yes 😅 I thought the sound was all good from the camera, but then the aircon came on and it was really loud. So I swapped to the mic! Lesson learned- use the mic the whole time next video haha
Yes! Sorry I should’ve explained that better. I believe it’s $20-$25 for the year. Totally worth it if you work a few patterns from knit companion each year!
I've been using the free version for the past year or so. I'm considering upgrading to the paid version to be able to access some of the other tools you covered in this tutorial. Question: you mentioned using the app on your phone and picking up where you left off from your i-pad. I use a Samsung Chrome laptop and a Samsung Galaxy phone. I noticed that the app on my phone does not sync up with the app on my laptop. Will that change if I upgrade on the app, or is it the difference between Apple and Android products? Thanks for the tutorial!😊
I just got the answer from Sally herself! You can sync between any platform, using any cloud. Here is an faq so you can chose your path: www.knitcompanion.com/ufaqs/sync-projects/ 😃
Thanks for a great tutorial! but how do you (or anyone else) get your finger drawings so sharp? When I try to draw a line or circle with my finger, it looks like I did it with my eyes closed :-) So I end up using highlighter instead, but I'd love to be able to "write" my notes in KC. Is there a trick?
I've been using the Row Counter app for a few years but I did not realize how much better Knit Companion is! Might switch over soon.

Yessss oh I should have showed that too! I think I have it in one of my older tutorials
I use Knit Companion almost exclusively for my patterns now
Oh my word, Natalie!! I’ve so enjoyed KC for years now and haven’t been using all these magical features! Thanks for this video.
Omg!! I’m so impressed. I don’t have the mind for all this at 72 yrs old. Wow! Way over my head!😮

Right! So helpful!
I'm the same, have not been using it to the max, but will be doing so for my complicated patterns from now on!
Thanks for this tutorial, it was so helpful. I learned several new things. Would you make one on inserting videos into KC?
This was so helpful! I've used Knit Companion for a while and I love it, but I never realized you could hold and drag to make a magic marker that's multiple stitches wide. So cool!
Great tutorial! I learned a lot. 😊
This was incredible! I heard about this app and I didn’t know it was so accessible/ user friendly

Aww yay!! The magic makes it even more fun!
I just bought this pattern. I think this is a sign. 😂.
Time to go yarn shopping…
Haha great timing!
I would love to see you do a crochet mosaic set up using Knit companion. I’m trying but having trouble with the chart

Do you have to buy the Knit Companion app and the dropbox app to upload patterns?
nope, you can use the free version of both. And you don't even need dropbox, you can add patterns from anywhere!
knitcompanion makes me feel like giving the Stephen West pattern I downloaded another shot...
Ooh yes!!

With kC you can have your row marker change color to remind you of rs and ws. And magic markers to color rs and ws stitches differently.

I zoom wayyy in because I’m using my finger. If you have a stylus (even a cheap one like the freebies at businesses) that helps a ton!
The paid version is $29.99 not $20.00. I am sure still worth it.
I just upgraded from the $19.99 version to the $29.99 version. I didn’t know that there was more than one paid version.
I thought you were saying Nick companion until today when I saw it written, non-native English speaker over here 😅
Too funny! My auto captions translated it as “nick companion” too! Must be something about the way I say “knit” 😅
Good video, but 2x speed.
