      Is it not E major pentatonic? Same notes in the scale I know, but the root feels more like E to me. All the chords in the song are in the E major scale. Playing bluesy licks ending on C# doesn't work as well to my ear. I dunno, genuinely curious.

    • @ivohage
      @ivohage 7 лет назад +10

      C#min and Emaj scales use the same notes. His 1 chord is the C#min, so the piece is in C#min.
      Ending a lick on E at the end of the chord progression sounds good because his last chord is the E major chord played in 4th position. If you play a solo over a full section, you will end your solo on the E chord and thus the E sounds magnificent used in that manner. (And E is also in C#min scale so it will always sound good used, not even dependant on where you start or stop.) Ending on an E over an E chord (or A over A chord, etc.) is commonly used and will always sound good. You could however end on a C# just to make the song fall back into the I chord. You could also keep playing over the E chord and end with a C# over the C#min chord on the first count, which is sometimes used and then be silent for the rest of the chord progression to lower the tension after you played a blazing solo. Whatever suits you and the solo played at that time.
      It might just give you a bluesier feel in this, but don't mistake general theory with blues and definitely not with what you feel sounds better or not:
      The chord progression in the song is I-VI-III sometimes using the VII chord, which is not a common blues progression (I-IV-V is f.e., where the follow up of those is dependant on it being f.e. a 12 bar or 9 bar blues and how the turnaround is shaped.)
      BTW, a song is never in "pentatonic". You can play a full C#minor scale over this song and it sounds good... John himself uses more than just the pentatonic notes. (Full C#minor scale).
      Blues notes being the bIII, bV and the bVII are not used in the chord progression of this song and almost never used by john playing over this song. He also never uses 7 chords on this song which are not necessary for a blues progression, but used A LOT to create a bluesier sound, also by John.
      It is not all blues because John plays it. He utilizes it, but not everything he does is.

    It's been said a million times, but I need to echo it. I've noticed that John Mayer sounds like John Mayer no matter what guitar he is playing, proving what we all have known for years and years and years - that tone, for a large part, is IN YOUR HANDS. I'm not saying that having nice gear isn't better, or that a Les Paul sounds the same as a Strat. Not at all. What I am saying is that I could have all John Mayer's gear and still not sound like him.
