I've been away from dpns for a long time and when I first started knitting with them I pulled many projects completely out. One day the process clicked in and I was on my way. Now, again, I have picked them up to do a baby hat that requires using dpns. So, I went to my local knitting store and got a refresher course, knowing that I could come here, in the comfort of my own home and use this site to keep going and having support. IMO, dpns aren't the easiest to knit with, but if you hang in there you won't throw your yarn and needles out the window! :) Thanks for the video!!!
My friend told me about knitting w/4 needles and as an uncoordinated, uncreative 'curious george', I had to check it out on U-tube. She said it was cool & it is.... great tutorial, I may have to dig up some knitting needles and finally learn. Thanx :D
Thank you for this vid! It all makes sense now! I tried for 2 hours (I don’t give up a challenge easily!) to use circular needles for a small project. The struggle was real 😫 I can crack on now. Cheers 👍👏
thank you so much. I've been trying to figure out how to use DPNs for months now with no luck. This clears up so much! I hate trying to figure out instructions from pictures and text, never makes any sense! These videos are very helpful! Please keep posting!
This is a pretty good video.I'm new too dpn knitting...I've taken out the work a couple times already.how to join was a little heart burn, now in good with it. The mystery now is to work on not knitting the same needle and not losing a needle! I'm determined! Thanks so much!
Thank you ! Thank you! Thank you!!! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have been searching for 2 days for this sort of tutorial and I am so glad I have found it. I normally crochet doilies and I have seen that the Knitted doilies have so much more interesting patterns and I want to go into this and could not find any site doing a really really good demo. This is excellent and really really good. Cheers
Brilliant! Thanks so much for your video. I’ve never used double pointed needles in my work but you’ve explained it really well. I can crack on with my project now 😃 Cheers
Thank you! Really easy to understand now I've seen you do it. Great tutorial. I needed to know this to make a stalk on top of pumpkin hats for preemies.
you can just start knitting across, you can knit flat for a few rows and then join and seam later, you can knit the last and first stitch together. There's lots of options.
Thank you so much! I love your videos.. you have helped me become a better knitter in so many ways. Your videos are easy to follow and very well done. I am still intimidated by my first DPN project, but you have made me feel like it's not impossible at all :) Now I can knit the hoard of baby bunnies I've always wanted...
I have found this tutorial very helpful indeed. Can I suggest that you add a bit on how to avoid twisting your stitches when you cast on? I am quite ham-fisted and not very practical and found I had problems with this. Many thanks Toni Norris South Africa
I have to say you really sound like the actor Kevin McKidd. I felt like Owen from Grey's Anatomy was holding this tutorial cause you even emphasize words and phrase your sentences in the same way as he does. Kind of made me really want to learn it... Anyway, thank you for a great video :) Very easy to follow! I feel like I can manage this now.
You're not doing it wrong. I cast on with two needles which puts my tail on the opposite end. I then knit one row through the back of the stitches to create a very pretty, neat edge. The only preferred method is what works for you.
I would make sure the markers are placed either in the middle of the needle or at least a few stitches in from the edge. If you're doing all of your shaping where the needles meet, you don't really need a marker, since the needle transition works as a marker.
For a long time I'd knit a portion of the needle then slip the stitches over on ll the other needles for some stupid reason. It never dawned on me to use a free needle to knit with like that. Went looking for the proper technique because I thought this method might have been wrong and I was needlessly stressing the space between the stitches. Nope, just figured out the proper technique on my own somehow. Also thought I was the only one who knitted all stitches after casting on then joining. I thought perhaps it was bad form and felt I was doing things improperly.
Are you able to help me please. I am going to knit a cushion. The pattern says 5 double pointed needles, size 2.75 mm cast on 8 stitches. I am having so much trouble because the yarn is fine and I get the needles twisted and cant figure out where the centre ring is. The problem is that everything is so tiny. Do you know of an easier way? Thanks a lot Kim
Hello, I have been knitting with my Double Pointed Needles, but for some reason everything I knit comes up instead of down. Is there a way I could fix this? This video was very helpful. Thank you!
Watching you manipulate five needles, I started laughing! I was using five DPNs earlier today on a mitten just to see if I could still do it--I could (kind of), but I kept dropping the needle I had just knitted the stitches off of--that made me laugh! Thanks!
looks great! I have been wanting to learn to use DPN and this is very helpful. However, do you have a hat pattern that you suggest for beginners to DPN? thanks!
Dear Madam, Many thanks for the pattern in crocheting and knitting which i enjoy watching and follow the stitches, once again many thanks, and best wishes, Marthese Carmen Theuma
this is a wonderful tutorial! but still having to work with all those other DPNs is just a daunting task. you would think there would be an easier way. lol, there's always a knitting machine :D
+Christine Little I'm not exactly certain which brand but they look like exotic wood needles; you're not going to find them in a store, most likely you have to buy them online or maybe special order them. (These look like rosewood needles).
+Christine Little I'm writing a book on knitting needles; if you're interested in buying some needles like these, post a reply to this comment and I'll send you some brand names when I can. Be warned, exotic wood needles can be expensive.
+Christine Little I went back and checked the draft of my book and here are the brands I know of that make exotic wood needles; I suspect this particular brand in the video is Blue Sky's rosewood needles but I'm not 100% sure, you'll need to check their website and compare. You'll have to google all these brands for the store websites since RUclips doesn't allow me to post links but here are the ones I've found and listed: Lantern Moon, Blue Sky, Susanne's, Laurel Hill, Surina, Zen, Plymouth, Blue Castle Fiber Arts, and Montana Mountain. Thanks for your interest in my book! Real life keeps coming up so I haven't even had a chance to finish writing it yet, plus info keeps changing because new products keep coming out so I have to keep editing. If I ever finish it, I'll probably self-publish on Amazon. I'll let you know.
What kind of project would you recommend when using the double-pointed needles for the first time, to get more experience with it but without it being too challenging?
I didn't post this tutorial, but I do teach knitting. If your working yarn and your tail are at opposite ends, then you are using a different cast on technique. Go back to the beginning and see how he is casting on. His is the preferred method since the stitches are "knit" on, and make a nice edge.
I am noticing you are using 5 dpns. Unfortunately, I only have 4 dpns. Does it make a significant difference? However, thank you for the tutorial. God bless.
There must be an easier way than removing the stitch from the needle and trying to place it inside another stitch. I'm using small needles and yarn for socks and I lost stitches when I tried to do this...several times. Plus, are you left handed? I was always told the yarn should always be on your right hand needle.
First it was cables that gave me nightmares at the mere idea of them. Once conquered I had to develop a new fear.....the DPN. After seeing this video I might deign to give it a try although Im not sure how well my arthritic paws will enjoy it.
+PJhan232 There are different sizes of needles because each knitting project requires a different size of needle. To know which to use, you would have to check your knitting pattern to see the needle size required.
I have another question: when I cast on, the two ends of my yarn are on opposite sides - one on top and the other on the bottom. However in videos with patterns, their ends are always on the same side. What cast on method do I use to make that happen? Or am I doing it wrong?
So, I'm loving this video, but the information about circular needles and how to use them for this kind of work is incorrect. I have several pairs of circular needles that are several lengths; they are my usual go-to for in the round work. When working with circulars for work in the round on a small circumference project, you actually want a longer cord to accommodate the work.
It's best to email us questions that don't relate to the video you're commenting on. There's a form on our website. My guess is, if you're using the long tail, you're not tightening the yarn down enough.
I have a question, When I am knitting with DPN, the fabric created ends up having a bit of a relaxed look where I go from on needle to the next. I am very even with my knitting, but you can definitely see a little separation in the columns where I go from one needle to the next. how do i prevent this?
I do that as well, but it still gives me a little "Ladder". I am still working on it. It must be that my tension just isn't tight enough between needles
maybe pull it firmer after its knitted over? I'm not sure but i've just started reading "knitting in plain english by maggie righetti" for all her written wisdom.
I'm trying to knit socks in the round and even though I do it the same as in the video I just had someone today say I knit inside out. :-( Trying to decide if I need to start over again or not.
I really recommend starting out knitting flat for a couple rows and then switch to the DPNs. It makes it much easier to manage. You can sew together the disconnected stitches when you are finished.
"there will be more stitches" and here i am, a total beginner that ended up with three "beginner" sets for knit animals (teddy bear, sheep and cat, i think i got them in Aldi? i don't quite remember, it was a few years back), looking up how to knit in the round because my instructions are telling me to knit 16 stitches in the rownd, 20 rows and then switch colors 🤣
It would have been helpful if you'd better showed how you made that extra stitch and how you attached it to the other. I had to rewind and pause multiple times and I still couldn't see what you were doing. :(
Is anyone else having a problem following him? I cannot see how to place/hold the needles, nevermind how to do the slip stitch hold on thing. How is it that you still end up with 5 stitches on each needle? I am so lost. I have not been able to find any videos that teach DPNs in a clear manner with video that follows... At least not yet.
+Daria Lay First question I have for you is have you knit in the round before? On circular needles? The concept is basically the same as circular needle knitting. The general idea is that instead of your stitches being spread out on a single circular needle (creating a round of work), they're instead distributed on 3-4 double pointed needles (but like with a circular needle project that requires working in the round, you do the same, only with DPNs). What he does is take a single DPN first and casts on all the stitches on that needle, then takes another DPN, one by one, and transfers a few of the cast on stitches onto each new DPN to finish distributing the stitches into a round. Does that make sense? That's how he ended up with 5 stitches on each needle (in this case only, he cast on 20 stitches total, that divided by 4 for 4 needles makes 5 stitches per needle). I don't know if this made sense. This can be daunting to learn through just videos. If you have a local yarn shop near you, I'd advise you visiting them and asking for some in-person help, like a class. Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.
When there are so few stitches I usually knit a few rows flat and then transfer to the DPNs. That way you have more stability and it's easier to control.
Unfortunately, this did not help me. You can tell that he is very facile at handling the needles, so is doing things by rote and not really explaining how he holds the needles, what direction he is going, how to make sure you are on the right track, etc. This is really not for beginners I guess, so I'm sorry that I got that impression. I hope to be as good as all the other commenters that love this video so much one day.
I’m a total beginner knitter but a veteran crocheter and I’m finally picking up knitting, thank you so much for this tutorial !!

Thanks Marthese. I'm a guy, but I'm glad you are enjoying the videos!
Please come back to RUclips and social media again
Thank you for this vid! It all makes sense now! I tried for 2 hours (I don’t give up a challenge easily!) to use circular needles for a small project. The struggle was real 😫 I can crack on now. Cheers 👍👏
Love that slip knot to join the ends!!! It took me quite a few times but I finally got it. Thanks so much.
thank you so much. I've been trying to figure out how to use DPNs for months now with no luck. This clears up so much! I hate trying to figure out instructions from pictures and text, never makes any sense! These videos are very helpful! Please keep posting!

Put a dab of nail polish on each one with a different color, it might help. My friend did that and she swears by it.
Your tutorial video was so helpful. I've been struggling to learn to use DPNS , excellent tutorial,Thank you ❤️
Thank you sooooo much. I have so many project I would love to do, but have avoided. All because they require dpns. The best tutorial.
Im super thrilled he used 4 needles and not 3! All other vids show 3, i needed a 4! Thank you! I can now make my cup cozies!! =]
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was very helpful, I think I am ready to rock a pair of wrist warmers now!
Thank you ! Thank you! Thank you!!!

sort of tutorial and I am so glad I have found it. I normally crochet doilies and I have seen that the Knitted doilies have so much more interesting patterns and I want to go into this and could not find any site doing a really really good demo. This is excellent and really really good.

Awesome! Glad you found it useful.
I found this very helpful. I have always shied away from trying DPNs, but now I will give them a try.
I think hats are a great project. You can start using a small circular needle and then transition to DPNs, which will make things a lot easier.
Excellent video - the slipknot over the first cast on stitch is exactly what I needed to know.
I referenced this video in my tutorial on how to make a klein bottle hat
Thank you! I felt your pain trying to manipulate the five needles :-) This was a really useful tutorial and very easy to follow.
you can just start knitting across, you can knit flat for a few rows and then join and seam later, you can knit the last and first stitch together. There's lots of options.
LOVE that a man was demoing this! Very clear and helpful.

Such a great tutorial . Thank you; it was very simple and clear instructions.
Aw thanks so much, u make it look so easy!! Gave me the courage to try again now

Looks "easy" time to try this out, great vid.
You're not doing it wrong. I cast on with two needles which puts my tail on the opposite end. I then knit one row through the back of the stitches to create a very pretty, neat edge. The only preferred method is what works for you.
How do you avoid your markers falling off on DPN’s when doing decreases on a hat? Love your instructions, so clear! They are the best. Thanks much! 😀
I would make sure the markers are placed either in the middle of the needle or at least a few stitches in from the edge. If you're doing all of your shaping where the needles meet, you don't really need a marker, since the needle transition works as a marker.
What brand of needles are you using? They're gorgeous!
Awesome! Glad we could help.
This was very helpful. I was a little overwhelmed with DPNs. But it doesn't seem so bad now. Thanks! :)
I just discovered your videos. I think I love you! Well, your videos anyway. Thanks!
For a long time I'd knit a portion of the needle then slip the stitches over on ll the other needles for some stupid reason. It never dawned on me to use a free needle to knit with like that. Should I join at each round when making a sock?
What type of DPNs ate u using?? They look like they are really nice ones!!! Thanks for an AWESOME tutorial, too!!!

It does not matter if you have 4 or 5. You can just hold more stitches with 5 needles.
Thank you SO MUCH! This was a tremendous help 😺 great video👍

I was always told the yarn should always be on your right hand needle.
Sandra Licher the yarn is coming from the right needle, which is correct.
Another option is to slip the first-cast stitch beside the extra last-cast stitch and then k2tog or p2tog.
Wow you are awesome !!! You made my day
When you don't make the slip knot and knit back around, how do you connect them?
You're a godsend! Thank you! :O
First it was cables that gave me nightmares at the mere idea of them. Once conquered I had to develop a new fear.....the DPN. After seeing this video I might deign to give it a try although Im not sure how well my arthritic paws will enjoy it.
I would suggest a stockinette stitch baby hat.
what is the thickness of the needles? I found different sizes in the store. Please tell me the one you used in this video, thanks.
+PJhan232 There are different sizes of needles because each knitting project requires a different size of needle. To know which to use, you would have to check your knitting pattern to see the needle size required.

I have a question, When I am knitting with DPN, the fabric created ends up having a bit of a relaxed look where I go from on needle to the next. I am very even with my knitting, but you can definitely see a little separation in the columns where I go from one needle to the next. how do i prevent this?
Dixie Longate I know this is old, and I'm no pro but i just knit one extra from the next needle every time.
Using wooden needles is a lot easier than using metal needles. The wooden needles are less slippery.
It really depends on the yarn. More rustic yarns can be challenging to work on wooden needles, so they might work better with metal or plastic.
I'm trying to knit socks in the round and even though I do it the same as in the video I just had someone today say I knit inside out. :-( Trying to decide if I need to start over again or not.
don't you just turn the sock inside out when you are done? I don't know - I'm just a beginner. How did it go?
Had a look at two of these videos and it still difficult managed to separate all stitches then when i start off it threw me.
I really recommend starting out knitting flat for a couple rows and then switch to the DPNs. It makes it much easier to manage. You can sew together the disconnected stitches when you are finished.
Using a paler colour than the needles would make it clearer
"there will be more stitches" and here i am, a total beginner that ended up with three "beginner" sets for knit animals (teddy bear, sheep and cat, i think i got them in Aldi? i don't quite remember, it was a few years back), looking up how to knit in the round because my instructions are telling me to knit 16 stitches in the rownd, 20 rows and then switch colors 🤣
Love knitting don't you?
Nice I really like this.
No
You cast on without a slip knot why? is there any advantage to this method?
omg..i dont know how many times i have tried..i just cant get use to 3 or 4 needles..damn it..thankyou for the tut but i just can not get it
Thank you very much! I get it now :)
Awesome!
New Stitch a Day: Knitting and Crochet Video Tutorials N'm
Brilliant! Now Iget it! Thank you.
Glad to be of help Rosalind!
so helpful!!! Thank you
Best example I’ve seen
It would have been helpful if you'd better showed how you made that extra stitch and how you attached it to the other. I had to rewind and pause multiple times and I still couldn't see what you were doing. :(
What needles are you using in this video ??
I get it, thanks, that's very helpful!
+Daria Lay Try watching it at half speed. I also tend to do it slowly step by step with them after watching it two times.
OHMIGOSH! Thank you so much! This helps so much!
DANG IT I DIDNT KNOW YOU NEEDED MORE THAN 2 NEEDLES TO KNIT WITH DOUBLE POINTS: *sadly starts unraveling work*
This technlique doesn't work as well when there are only 8 stitches and therefore 2 per needle. I keep dropping and twisting the stitches.
When there are so few stitches I usually knit a few rows flat and then transfer to the DPNs. That way you have more stability and it's easier to control.
i hate knitting but i have to for school so thanks
Thank you!
Thanks so much!!!
Thanks man :)
why not just use circular needles, 2 needles, BAM your done!
Ginmars1 it's explained in the beginning of the video
I am not a long tail cast on person.
you are knitting from the left I need you to show coming from the right
Looks very complicated
Unfortunately, this did not help me. You can tell that he is very facile at handling the needles, so is doing things by rote and not really explaining how he holds the needles, what direction he is going, how to make sure you are on the right track, etc. This is really not for beginners I guess, so I'm sorry that I got that impression. I hope to be as good as all the other commenters that love this video so much one day.
Make it yourself thanks to WoodPriX page. I think it's the best way to learn how to build it in the cheapest way.
are you trying to kill me?!
You may go to WoodPriX website if you'd like to make it yourself guys.
Oh my god soooo hard
Moves way too fast, doesn't explain enough.
This video made it look awkward....
other videos didn't work for me, but this one did.
this video makes no sense.
