"There is no spell." Giles made up the spell as a way to encourage Buffy to talk about what happened. He knew she needed to talk about it to heal from it. He may also have wanted Willow to hear too to teach her about the dangers of magic.
Notice in Bring It On, Eliza has the same arm tattoo she has in Buffy, but in Bring it On, she wipes it off with her thumb. Buffy came first and the scene with the tattoo was an Easter Egg.
6:26 Giles isn’t undermining or underestimating Willow. He knows firsthand that magic can be highly addictive, like hard drugs. He’s trying to spare her from opening a door she can never close again.
The scene wehre Faith hits Buffy in the library, Eliza really did hit SMG. SMG was off on her blocking. But that made her reaction real, so they kept it in.
Like Oz, I would wet my pants a little at the thought of having Faith(Faith!), a Slayer who LIKES killing, who doesn't know me or like me...watch me while I'm in the form of her prey. What if she gets bored? "Oh hey...I accidentally killed OZ...that's okay, right?"
i mean, he hasn't seen her hunt much. he did personally receive her assurance that "as long as you don't go scratching me or humping my leg, we're five by five". i won't go so far as to say that his response here is out of character, but the line isn't as clearly justified as you make it out to be, especially coming from oz.
Not really a spoiler, but expect Faith to be in & out in the first part of the season because Eliza wasn't yet 18 (born in December 1980, first half was filmed in 1998), so she's in more episodes around the half way point of season 3.
Faith is how I finally realized (as a freshman in college!) that I'm bi, and she's still the hottest female character ever in my mind! She was also a really helpful role model when I was going through a lot of abuse and years of terror and isolation because of her toughness and confidence. I've thought many times about getting her tattoo. One of the best and most interesting characters ever written IMO. 🧨🔥💓
In "Beauty and the Beasts," we have perfect examples of the helpful way to approach a victim of abuse (Oz) and the unhelpful way (Buffy). Oz letting her know he senses something is happening and that he's available to talk whenever she feels comfortable - absolutely. Shaming the victim and implying that it's their fault if someone else gets abused because they didn't immediately turn against the abuser they have a trauma bond with... not the move.
yesss im glad u said it, i really dont like how buffy said "dont get hit" the abuser has a way of manipulating their victim to believing its their fault and if they fight back or leave they dont care or love them enough to stay and continue the cycle
Faith is easily a top 3 character in the entire Buffyverse for me and her entire arc Is just **chefs kiss** 👌 Eliza Dushku is a national treasure and ever since you watched Wrong Turn I’ve been so looking forward to seeing ur introduction to her. Buffy showed her inner Cordelia this episode with her jealously of faith which is a callback to the season 2 finale and prom episodes and I honestly love the consistency in writing. Buffys not perfect and she wouldn’t be nearly as good a character if she was.
Notice that after Jykel/Hyde hit Debbie, she was the one comforting him. This is an important part in the cycle of abuse. Things seem normal, then the abuser abuses the victim, then the abuser forces the abusee to comfort them, reinforcing the idea in the abusee that it is their fault. Also, notice that after the fight, just as Debbie had comforted Pete, Buffy is comforting Angel. The relationship between Pete and Debbie is not so dissimilar from Buffy's and Angels the second half of last season.
I think that Oz bit Pete during that fight so if Pete had survived we would’ve ended up with a hybrid Jekyll and Hyde werewolf creature on the next full moon which would’ve been both cool AF and scary AF because Pete already had an aggressive temper so adding werewolf temperament to that would be terrifying.
HAPPY PRIDE MONTH BOYS! I love being gay! 🏳️🌈❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤 Faith is a fantastic character with a great introduction and she has many layers and skills. I love her so much. 🖤 Season 3 is something else!
Willow’s rambling 🥰 Eliza! 💚 Double the slayage, double the fun 🙌🏼 Excited to see more Faith. These vamps ain’t loyal out here. Angel’s back?!! Xander remains the worst! It's the hardest thing for me in beauty and the beast is deciding which is worse...... Ultimately I know that being killed is the worst case scenario...... But to be with someone for a year or two and have it ended....or to live with it for decades, and bring children into the relationship..... 💔💔💔 While I'm glad mine didn't end like that, i may have done more long term trauma 🤔🤔 This episode, and the reflection, sucks

I absolutely love Faith! After Willow, she is my favourite character. Her entire arc is just fantastic and Eliza is such a great actress, she truly brings Faith to life for me. Her catchphrase five by five is something to live by 😂 Plus Cordelia’s line “Check out Slut-o-Rama over there and her disco Dave” always cracks me up 😂😂
I always loved these episodes... But after living beyond seeing them for the 1st time 😢 3x4 is probably my least favorite, because of most relatable, episode. There are a few episodes that I think were worse as far as the buffyverse is concerned.... And a few episodes that emotionally hit me harder..... But none that I personally relate to and hate as much 💜💜👐👐💜💜
Faith! Buffy's bad girl gal pal 😅 Eliza Dushku may not be the best actress on the show, but Faith is fun and always looks great. Brings some good drama too
I think she's great given how young she still was, 17 until her birthday in December. But I could be biased, growing up in VT but living in MA since college, her Boston roots are occasionally apparent. 😉
@@ernesthakey3396She is great for her age and on par with Charisma I would say. Having to share so many scenes with Sarah just makes Eliza seem a bit flat emotionally (which does play well for Faith having PTSD), but it's something I've noticed about Eliza in other shows and the more I see it the more it seems less like an acting choice. Not everyone can be amazing at their craft and I still enjoy her in pretty much everything.
@@LordVolkov Thank you lol everyone says how great Eliza's acting is and I agree she does not have Sarah's range. Even in Dollhouse I dont think she was that great, imo Amy Acker is much better and should have been the lead in that show.
@@paulinerobertson6836 She's kinda the weak point of Dollhouse only because everyone else is A tier (oof, an Amy Acker Echo would have been magnificent). And then Alan Tudyk shows up and makes her look like a drama student 😅
Where did all the money go? Why demons and vamps and special effects in seasons 1-3 look like their budget was100 bucks? Did Whedon take all the money or who took it?
@@MagesLikeYouAndII think that’s because it’s a common phrase. Common, as in it’s been said before in some form, not because people say it a lot. Like Dazed and Confused(1993) has a character say something similar; “Hell, my grandmother can hit harder than that”. I think this family of phrases all stem from “You hit like a girl, and we all assumed Faith had just come up with a more witty way of saying that. Alternatively, as it’s been 20 year since the show; We’ve probably all heard some iteration of it BECAUSE of Faith. And so we assumed, again, that she was just being witty. Also, it’s never said that Faith’s mom hit her just that both her parents were drunks and negligent - its own form of abuse. “Go Ask Malice” is generally accepted as canon for Faith and she doesn’t spend all that much time with her parents there. She’s constantly being moved from relative to relative and foster care because of their negligence.
Thing is, in s3e4, the window being open is misleading; Oz must have woken up in the cage, he would have noticed if he woke up outside. And there's no way the werewolf would get out but then crawl back inside before sunrise, the wolf doesn't think like that... Gotta admit, I never expected a "Mr. Hyde vs The Wolfman" scene in Buffy. 🤣 Three beasts, no waiting!
I have a lot of ties to Faith, Hope, Trick. I moved to Los Angeles the morning after this episode aired. I moved into the apartment my friend moved out of. He played the pizza guy who got eaten and was also David Greenwalt's assistant. The band playing the Bronze is Darling Violetta. I met the band two months later and have been very good friends with the guitarist since. They got hired to write and record the absolutely fantastic Angel theme song. Bring It On is not just great but has many Buffy connections. "Let's beat these Buffy's down." And the score is by Christophe Beck, who did Buffy's score for several years. Giles knew Buffy was holding something back and wanted to give her permission to say it without directly asking. A friend who will remain nameless because she is now a TV Executive Producer, used to talk about how you can tell 😊when naked Angel switches from stuntman Mike Massa to David. Ep 4 in reply.
I don't like ep 3.4 very much. The smoking was simply so Buffy would think the guidance councilor was alive in the later scene. Time works differently in hell dimensions.
In Beauty And The Beasts you can see how the show has improved so much in terms of character development, plot lines, cinematography etc. S3 was excellent with a consistently good standard of episode. The metaphor here of the abusive partner shown in a great episode, and an obvious sub plot playing homage to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. This show once again mirrors serious social comment, some great scenes in this episode, the best is when Angel falls to his knees in front of Buffy and the camera pans out with the dead couple on the floor.
I love the mention of the idea that vampires start to look more demonic the older they get, to the point they don't even "vamp out" anymore like the majority of vampires we see. The Master looked more batlike, clearly evoking Nosferatu and what the other vamps generally look like with the forehead but even moreso, Kakistos looks more like a cross between that and a classical demon with the beefiness and cloven feet. Mr Trick is one of my favourite vamps as well, taking advantage of the modern world and such. The bit where he lunges at the drive thru worker is properly animalistic looking, brutal and intense as hell. Also just abandoning his boss, you don't often see self preservation like that, smarter than the average vamp. I do enjoy that they occasionally let Oz as a werewolf be a badass and show he is pretty dangerous in his wolf form, his "times up, rules change" line is pretty sick and the bit in the episode of Season 2 where Angelus is like "nah actually fuck this, I don't need to lose an arm or get my face fucked up" when he's squaring up to him over a kill was as well. Gets it across in universe that you probably don't wanna tangle with them and makes it clear Buffy being able to is a big deal.
Faith was definitely in the system, getting in all sorts of trouble before she was called to become a slayer and her watcher was probably the only decent parental figure she had. We all know someone like Faith if we ourselves didn't have a similar past. The ptsd from seeing her watcher be brutally murdered turned her into a scared little kid which is what she is. I think that Buffy didn't like her swooping in and everyone loving her mainly because subconsciously, she knows it's a facade since she's a slayer herself and has been through it. Joyce wanting an orphan to take over so that her daughter can be safe is not a good look.
Faith's entrance is *iconic* . Season 3 started out REALLY strong, but with episode 3 they already sealed the deal. Strongest season of the show *so far* .
BTW, according to the comic about Buffy's origin story, she'd also lost her watcher. Her first watcher, in LA. You've seen him in a flahsback in the end of S2. The comic is usually considered canon in the context of the series.
@@joshfacio9379 The movie is not considered canon. There is some resemblance between the comic and the movie, because the comic is closely based on the same script that the movie is based on loosely. Very loosely.
Faith Hope & Trick a pivotal episode with the introduction of Faith many fans absolute favourite from the entire Buffyverse. Some great scenes in this when Faith says 'don't you find slaying makes you really hungry and horny' and all the Scoobies turn to face Buffy. Faith is of course totally different to Buffy in being outgoing and streetwise and sexually overt, and we can see Buffy's jealously in the gang engrossed with Faith's stories. The Mayor is was mentioned first in S2, but we had not seen to this point. We see Faith's propensity for pure violence when needlessly pummelling the vampire when Buffy needed help, a trait of her character. At the end we see Buffy place The Irish Claddagh Ring on the spot Angel was killed, and he is restored from Hell. It only gets better and better from here, this is a great Season.
3x1 - Faith, at last! Also, Mr. Trick is a cool new enemy who knows when to bail on a bad situation. 3x2 - Makes me want a spin-off called "Battlin' Beastly Boys", there was so much monster fightin' this ep!
"There is no spell."
Giles made up the spell as a way to encourage Buffy to talk about what happened. He knew she needed to talk about it to heal from it. He may also have wanted Willow to hear too to teach her about the dangers of magic.
I’d always thought it just didn’t matter because he had his soul back first. Awww, Giles! 😭
"Trick" is the vampire at the drive in!
Faith -self explanatory
Hope - (the most commonly missed reference) Scott's last name
Notice in Bring It On, Eliza has the same arm tattoo she has in Buffy, but in Bring it On, she wipes it off with her thumb. Buffy came first and the scene with the tattoo was an Easter Egg.
its not the same, its more a thorns arm band
It's not the same tattoo. It's not even on the same arm.
6:26 Giles isn’t undermining or underestimating Willow. He knows firsthand that magic can be highly addictive, like hard drugs. He’s trying to spare her from opening a door she can never close again.
“I’m not going to say that Xander always disappoints us but..” 😂😂
Cody is so good at predicting Buffy plots. Are you sure you didn't get high a few years ago, binge the whole show and not remember?
The scene wehre Faith hits Buffy in the library, Eliza really did hit SMG. SMG was off on her blocking. But that made her reaction real, so they kept it in.
Faith has entered the show so let the fun begin!!!
I *adore* Faith. She's such a fun and interesting character (AKA Buffy's dark mirror). She has one of the best character introductions in the series.
Faith is definitely one of the most interesting characters on the show. She’s a fan favourite for a reason!
Like Oz, I would wet my pants a little at the thought of having Faith(Faith!), a Slayer who LIKES killing, who doesn't know me or like me...watch me while I'm in the form of her prey.

Hyde-adjacent also physically resembles Frankenstein's monster. The climactic battle is Frankenstein vs. The Wolfman vs. Dracula.
The fish swimmers and the hot mummy didn't get to join in the monster mash, sadly.
I wish there was a whole audiobook of SMG reading "Call of the Wild". She has a really great voice and diction for it.
It's always fun to watch reactors meet their new favourite character...

BTW, according to the comic about Buffy's origin story, she'd also lost her watcher. Her first watcher, in LA. You've seen him in a flahsback in the end of S2.
The comic is usually considered canon in the context of the series.
Im not sure if the movie is cannon and her watcher is the same one who died in the movie.
@@joshfacio9379 The movie is not considered canon. There is some resemblance between the comic and the movie, because the comic is closely based on the same script that the movie is based on loosely. Very loosely.
3x3 - the true end to season 2, SMG brings her A game.
Don't worry. Angel's butt has distracted us all. 😂😂😂
So delighted to get to Faith. Faith/Buffy was a big ship back in the day, I wonder what you’ll think of it/Faith in general.
Faith is here let’s gooo ❤❤
