Collingwood change week to week more than any other premiership team i remember. They mould their game to the opposition deftly On Saturday they knew they needed to score more and they looked totally different to how they looked against Melbourne. More like the Collingwood of rounds 1-10
This Collingwood side has been very good at adapting. We were great at being offensive when we wanted to be and defensive when we wanted to be. I think you can't really take the last few weeks of the home and away season seriously as Pies had essentially already locked up top 2, so they probably fell back a bit on purpose as they didn't want to give too much away (game plan wise) and just coasted into finals. In the Dees and Giants games (finals) we won by locking the ball down and not letting it go anywhere. Sure the opposition put pressure on, but Pies just held on, when you're winning close to the final siren, you don't need to score, you just need to prevent the opposition from scoring, which we did. Grand Final was a very different game as Brisbane were able to break the deadlock at times, so Pies pushed to another level when we needed to, if Lions got the lead, we got it back, if they got the lead we got it back, if we felt threatened, we put an extra goal on as cushion. It was genius. 'Don't over exert yourselves when there is no need.' Seemed like our game plan.

Wow ! Great match review by you both Kingy and Gerard. Very comprehensive and detailed. Surely one of the best done and greatly appreciated when I live so far away from Oz these days in France. Have the feeling that despite all his wonderful qualities to get them ready these recent years that Fagan may not be the man to coach them across the line to victory. Feel he lacks something maybe some daring and risk taking by the brains trust off-field to envigorate the game. The Lions have to learn to take the game on at all costs and leave nothing back in the changing rooms on such big games at the MCG. Let's hope they get another chance to redeem themselves soon as Collingwood were completely get-able for the Lions and this match was always well within reach. Felt the Lions lacked some critical experience when needed on the big day and could have done with Daniel Rich down back and Jack Gunston up forward for the second half. Anyway, bravo guys, you really helped in breaking down the game so fully and understand well what went wrong for my old team the Lions and what went right for the Magpies quarter by quarter. I guess Spring was their season after all this time. Played at a different venue I'm not sure the result would have been the same as shown twice this season already. Collingwood with their army have a massive home ground advantage that in future needs to be nullified for all contending teams in the big final- covid was at least good for that aspect. A system such as in the American NFL is plausible where the final is always played somewhere differently each season so as to create neutral ground for both contenders. Speaking on the video, not surprised to see Rayner highlighted for a number of errors. The handball turnover leading to Mihocek's, while trying to take pies on despite having free lions players running forward, and the kick turnover with 40 seconds to go which led to De Goey's goal after the siren were horrific. Examples of a player trying to do too much and being a hero instead of being a team player.. was very disappointing from Cam
Correction: The advantage rule itself sucks. Unfortunately there is no need for “intent” to take advantage just because it’s impossible for the umpires to tell. The flip side is: if Moore didn’t manage to punch and Hipwood marks it - wouldn’t you be livid if the umpire still called it back? To the letter of the rule, which isn’t well written, the umpire called it correctly. Same with the 50m against Markov. Crap call but correct to the letter of the law.

For most of the season David King had rated Collingwood #1. He showed support for us all year when most media types were looking for reasons why we couldn’t win it. I respected him for his loyalty when he said he was on the Pies all the way. So, to see him turncoat and select Brisbane to win the GF was such a disappointment and a betrayal of confidence as it confirmed that he never truly believed we could do it and the thought that we might genuinely scared him. He never thought we would achieve a premiership and was most likely just trying to pump us up so we’d fall hard. David King, I thought you were better than that but I was wrong. Another Collingwood hating media fraud.

As a neutral supporter I thought Brisbane were both sloppy and lazy at times.Collingwood players, who were well held, were brilliant when they did get a chance.A couple of poor umpiring decisions hurt the Lions.On the other hand, stupidity (an unnecessary 50m penalty ) cost them dearly.All up, Collingwoods elite players did more than Brisbanes.The Magpies were better drilled and more disciplined

Difference was Brisbane turned it over 11 times more than what Collingwood did, mostly unforced errors also. Brisbane weren't near their best for long enough and still was a kick away from winning.. but if looking at scoring shots and 1 qtr of dominace with inside 50s makes you believe "Collingwood should of won easily" then good on you

Brisbane’s goal kicking efficiency was elite (besides daniher in the last) and it kept them in the game. But they weren’t close to the Pies.

Wow ! Great match review by you both Kingy and Gerard. Very comprehensive and detailed. Surely one of the best done and greatly appreciated when I live so far away from Oz these days in France. Have the feeling that despite all his wonderful qualities to get them ready these recent years that Fagan may not be the man to coach them across the line to victory. Feel he lacks something maybe some daring and risk taking by the brains trust off-field to envigorate the game. The Lions have to learn to take the game on at all costs and leave nothing back in the changing rooms on such big games at the MCG. Let's hope they get another chance to redeem themselves soon as Collingwood were completely get-able for the Lions and this match was always well within reach. Felt the Lions lacked some critical experience when needed on the big day and could have done with Daniel Rich down back and Jack Gunston up forward for the second half. Anyway, bravo guys, you really helped in breaking down the game so fully and understand well what went wrong for my old team the Lions and what went right for the Magpies quarter by quarter. I guess Spring was their season after all this time. Played at a different venue I'm not sure the result would have been the same as shown twice this season already. Collingwood with their army have a massive home ground advantage that in future needs to be nullified for all contending teams in the big final- covid was at least good for that aspect. A system such as in the American NFL is plausible where the final is always played somewhere differently each season so as to create neutral ground for both contenders. Speaking on the video, not surprised to see Rayner highlighted for a number of errors. The handball turnover leading to Mihocek's, while trying to take pies on despite having free lions players running forward, and the kick turnover with 40 seconds to go which led to De Goey's goal after the siren were horrific. Examples of a player trying to do too much and being a hero instead of being a team player.. was very disappointing from Cam

The advantage rule itself sucks. Unfortunately there is no need for “intent” to take advantage just because it’s impossible for the umpires to tell.
The flip side is: if Moore didn’t manage to punch and Hipwood marks it - wouldn’t you be livid if the umpire still called it back?
To the letter of the rule, which isn’t well written, the umpire called it correctly.

For most of the season David King had rated Collingwood #1. He showed support for us all year when most media types were looking for reasons why we couldn’t win it. I respected him for his loyalty when he said he was on the Pies all the way. So, to see him turncoat and select Brisbane to win the GF was such a disappointment and a betrayal of confidence as it confirmed that he never truly believed we could do it and the thought that we might genuinely scared him. He never thought we would achieve a premiership and was most likely just trying to pump us up so we’d fall hard. David King, I thought you were better than that but I was wrong. Another Collingwood hating media fraud.

From an impartial supporter I thought that was a great analysis. It highlighted why collingwood won and the lions lost. At no stage did they say lions should have won. Reading some of the biased comments here only highlights why the pies fans remain as the most disliked in the game.

We had to many players who were flat, rayner, hip wood, McCarthy, all forwards.
No goals from the midfield either. Pies got two each from Crisp and Degoey and one from Daicos.
No Johnson Mcstay Adams in GF they lose Murphy quarter time Pies should have won by 24-30 points. Next year no Adams but Schultz is a big upgrade in forward half of ground and with a fit Johnson and healthy Mcstay next year Pies will be even bigger. Cox the unsung hero around the ground. 2024 Pies

I will say i mentioned a couple of times since the big day and big win, im amazed how Brisbane were anywhere near to close any time of the match, they just didn't seem to do anything, but on watching a few replays it wasn't all that bad from Brisbane at times but COLLINGWOOD were brilliant and could have been even more stunning in a lot of plays! Final thoughts are of watching COLLINGWOOD, it's always heart pounding stuff as to falling short or being ran over the top of no matter the reasonable lead they may have, always hard to watch and enjoy until we've won and i can relax watching the replay!😂😂😂
