Are there magnets in the stand to automatically align the phone to portrait (or landscape) orientation, or is it up to the user to not misalign the phone too much? Thanks for the video!
The magnets will self-center your phone based on the orientation that you want to use. The strength of the magnets also depends on your case, or lack there of. When your phone is on one orientation, you can pretty easily transition to the other orientation. I have the Peak Design Everyday Phone Case and the case itself has secondary magnets. So the bond between my phone and the HiRise is fairly strong. When I wasn't using the PD case, my phone was able to come off the charger much easier.
Did you also find that a big circular brown mark appears after a while right where the magnet is? Almost looks like a burn mark.

Yes! I actually started using this stand more and I've been using nightstand mode myself.
