We moved to Portugal a year ago and never looked back. I truly believe that Portugal is the last authentic country of Europe. And that's likely also why it's become such a tourist hub, as you can find so many unpolished pearls without tourists. Obviously it's just a matter of time before Portugal joins the polished tourist culture of Spain and Italy, but until then it's all about enjoying it. One of the main differences between Portugal and for example Spain and Italy is that the Portuguese people have a level of love for their country that is simply unparalleled. It's incredible how proud they are of their country and that is also why living here is fantastic. But definitely be careful with romanticizing about moving to Portugal if you don't have a digital business or a well-paid job. Moving to Portugal and getting a random job will leave you with a tough pay check to pay check life.

Disagree. You will find this also in Italy , far beyond the usual tourist traps you all seem to gravitate to. Sicily being one shining example. We love our country very very much. And digital nomads seem to agree with Palermo being a burgeoning tech hub with zero lost of our authentic charm and realism.

@@theohanalife9899 We have spent around 2 months in Calabria and yes, it's definitely an authentic place and probably the exact same as Sicily, but living there is a pain in the ass as 97% don't speak English. They are simply too far back in time. I'm sure Palermo is better, but that is also a fairly big city. Portugal is a perfect balance where most speak English, which makes life a looot easier.

1 generation ago my family left Portugal and moved to the U.S. I am Portuguese born in the U.S. and would love to move back to Portugal. Quality of life there is much better than U.S. America has very little quality of life unless you're a millionaire. Horrible living in U S., horrible health care, low wages high cost of living etc. My heart belongs in beautiful Portugal.

I am a 20 yo student from Lisbon, born and raised, and never left. The information you provide is very accurate, i have never seen such a precise description of our country from a foreigner. If you are young, I strongly advice you to not come here: You will flock to the bigger cities, such as Lisbon or Porto, and the cost of living is absolutely through the roof. Wages are very low compared to the rest of europe, which, just as he said, compels qualified young adults to leave the country (myself included). Plus, you will be ripped off in ways you dont expect, such as fuel cost, road tolls, electricity cost, car tax, etc...
Now, if you are retired, its a different situation altogether, as you can appreciate the relaxed culture. The climate, the easy access to the beach, and the coffee/patisserie culture are what I like the most about my country. Retires from other countries even have tax incentives.
    Great video altogether.

We are looking at permanent migration to another place. Just wanted to know how is the racism situation there? My child is school going age. Will they face discrimination on a day to day basis. I'm really not bothered about myself and my wife is not bothered about herself too but I'm really concerned for my kids. Don't want them togo through any mental trauma. I've moved to Portugal back in 2009 when I was 23. I've had my master degree in Lisbon and have worked during 5 years as an accountant with 600€ per month, so I can say that Portugal is not one of the best countries to move in in your 20's, if you have no money, want to build a career and have no financial support from your family or an extra income.

Great video, directly to the point, fact based explanation of your viewpoints. I'm from Portugal myself, been living abroad since 2006 and i would agree that even if living cost and overall quality of life are a plus to people like me to come back, salary levels are definitly a con once you've experienced even just spanish salary levels working for international companies. Both a pro and a con that i think you've missed is the portuguese mindset, both very nurturing, kind and friendly, but also lacking a certain business agressiveness and / or professionalism when it comes to the work environment - as if the world had become a globally crazy Manhatthan and we were still wanting to live as if we were in our New Jersey childhood, neighbourhood. Bureaucracy, time keeping and overall professional standards with regards to business and public services practices are also a down side - overall were not highly productive as a nation and we do lack a common sense of strategic goal both as a country and as a people, from my perspective. Other cons are also our still high rates of business, financial, judicial, digital and civil rights illiteracy in some strata of the population. However, having said that, theres a certain christian values based mindset still prevailing in the overall population that accounts for Portugal being one of the safest countries in Europe and in the world. Happy to share any other thoughts with you over a glass of wine in case you're re in barcelona any time. Thanks again for the great vid.

Housing is only affordable if you don’t depend on a Portuguese salary. Meaning, if your income is from abroad. Other than that, you will have to live far away from the main areas. If you are retired, it might not be a big deal, but if you work here, spending 1 to 1:30 mins back and forth to work, it’s a drag.

In 1995, I spent a month in Viana do Castelo (north of Portugal) and then about two months in Lisbon and Cascais. Portugueses I've met there were educated, clever, helpful, and open-minded people. The country has different and beautiful types of landscape to enjoy. Except for some touristic spots, Portugal was extremely safe and the food excellent. Due to the long and rich history of the country, the culture is unique. The language is very pleasant to hear but a bit more difficult to pronounce than Spanish. I think that the ocean low temperature preserves most of the Portugal from Ibiza-type tourism (with the exception of the Algarve).

You picked all the reasons I retired to Portugal from Aus in 2018. I lost everything in a failed business some years ago so only have my Aus pension but that is enough to live well, as far as I'm concerned (my needs are few :). Climate, friendly people, little crime, safe, reasonable costs, interesting culture and more. And, lots of people speak English, particularly those under 30-40yo. The cafe culture and the many cafes is a joy to live within, in my view. I'm about mid Portugal, a 1hr cheap train ride to the coast. Even inland here, we get the Atlantic breezes in summer so never too hot. In an ideal world I would like to live on the coast but that's usually associated with more expensive rental apartments so an hour train ride is a price worth paying for my living coats here :) Top vid mate, real and no bullshit, love it.

Great video, that was a pretty accurate description. Portugal in particular is a great place to enjoy your retirement and spend vacations, of course. But, as you pointed out, to make a living working here, one may struggle a little bit more when compared to other European countries. It will also face a problem with population decrease and aging in the near future. Anyway, when you consider all factors including safety, healthcare, good weather and amazing people it still makes a wonderful place to enjoy life :)

The Healthcare providers that are employed in the Public sector should not be allowed to offer services outside of the Public sector and the Private sector requires a regulatory framework to prevent excessive price structures developing and I say that with some reluctance as I work in a Private Healthcare sector in a different country that is on the verge of potentially destroying it's private sector with heavy handed government intervention.

Thank you for this new video! It would be nice if you made a comparison between Spain and Portugal, or more specifically Portuguese and Spanish people. Being a Portugal-loving Spaniard myself, I've always found Portuguese people more "melancholic" than Spaniards (including Galicians), who are usually more "euphoric" (although to a different degree, depending on the region). Many people from other countries see Spain and Portugal as basically the same thing, but they'd be surprised if they knew how different we are. Plus, it's always better to have the point of view of someone who's neither Spanish nor Portuguese. Greetings from Logroño.

The Portuguese don't want to return. They're making too much money abroad and don't like to live close to the bone. Working abroad--even being exploited--still allows them access to small luxuries. And major countries offer access to a range of luxuries compared to Portugal--electronics, clothes, etcetera. For those who think of returning, they want to return to Lisbon...and that won't be possible with the salary that they'll get. For me, as somebody who is very sensitive to people and has some capability of having conversations, the country seems to be too much of a bummer. I can't ignore how people are hurting.

I've lived in Évora for over a year now. There are obviously many great things to say about Portugal. For me, personally, it's the low crime rate and the generally high quality of living. However, there are definitely downsides. The biggest for me are noisy neighbors and their dogs. I know this is not something restricted to just Portugal, but it's something that I've been unable to escape since moving here. Many people here (not all) just don’t seem to care and are really oblivious to any kind of discomfort they might be creating. They leave their dogs chained up all day, barking incessantly. And this is not just a few people; it’s systematic. When they get together to drink in the street or on their terrace, they insist on shouting at each other even though they’re less than a meter apart. And this can go on all night. You try to talk to them and they just brush you off. I’ve lived in a few different neighborhoods here and it’s the same everywhere. I thought that I’d get used to it but I am just getting angrier and angrier.

In what kind of neighborhoods do you live! I have moved several times since 20 years and I had never a single problem with noisy neighbors.

I am astounded. You live in our country, in a city of uni students that like to party and are entitled to. This is no Shangri-La I know, but it is a place where people live and enjoy life. If you want one with no noise and barking dogs, there are plenty of cemetaries where it is dead quiet. Good God, if it is that bothersome go to the Camera Municipal and file a complaint, but don't act as if the whole place is a bunch of barking dogs and wild, loud students, especially when our population is dwindling and youngsters (even loud they may be) are a God send! 🙄

@@Alfablue227 Haha oh I'm sooooo sorry to offend you. You know why the population is dwindling, right? Because the younger population is leaving Portugal in droves, and I don't blame them.

being American and blue collar, I would like to say the beauty of Europe looks seductive. however, I would like to see what life for a blue collar worker in Europe would look like.

Its much the same story - tough - except we have universal healthcare which if you have serious health issue's can make all the difference in the world...
It's funny because we love the landscape of the USA & can't wait to come back traveling finance permitting.

You have health care but the minimum wage is about 580 and expect to work A LOT if you go to the north of Portugal but in the south of Portugal they are known for being very lazy(due to the extreme heat can reach 48, 50 celsius sometimes) so it is acepted to be lazy and is completely normal in the south for most Jobs like farm workers, builders,...

And please don't said that about the people of south Portugal, because it's false.
People all over Portugal are hard working people.

Excellent video mate. Thanks for sharing your insights. What would you reckon are some of the smaller towns that are worth considering to retire in. Southern or Northern part of the country? Temperate weather with scope for outdoorsy stuff like hiking and cycling

I lived there for two years and I’d agree with everything he says. The only thing I’d add is cars are expensive to buy, even half knackered ones
