Thanks so much for the helpful information Brent. My husband and I are retired and are looking at moving to Portugal on the D7. We haven’t been there or made a scouting trip yet, but will be doing so soon. I was happy to hear what you said about the beaches in the area where you are. We have been thinking about the Algarve, because we also lived in Hawaii and love being near the ocean. We’re in the midst of an in-depth online course right now that helps walk you through all of the steps of moving abroad and has experts around visas, healthcare, etc. and also many other areas for folks like us who have done a lot of traveling, but haven’t lived abroad. I talked to one woman who really loves the town of Tavira. Just wondering if you have any thoughts on the pros and cons of the Algarve area versus your area I love the idea of a A small to medium size town that is walkable has good public transportation and good fresh food markets, an ex Community, It is not too far from the nearest airport in case we needed to get back to the US quickly. Thanks for any more videos!

The closest you will find to the beaches of Hawaii is probably in the Algarve (I've also heard good things about Madeira, but haven't been there yet). However, there is a MUCH bigger swing in seasonal temps. For example, the weather in Tavira averages a high of 60 and a low of 45 in January.
There are international airports in Portugal in Porto, Lisbon and Faro (Algarve). Lisbon has, by far, the most flights to the US but I have seen Faro adding more flights to the US.
I haven't been to Tavira specifically, but have heard good things. In the Algarve, I like Loule, but it might be too small and too far from the water for you. I would suggest joining as many expat groups on FB as you can find. There is an excellent one in Setubal called Our Setubal Community.
The only caution I would give about the Algarve would be aware that many of the resort communities clear out during the winter and don't have a lot of culture to offer beyond beach and water activities.
No matter where you decide, a scouting trip is mandatory. Best of luck!

I have a question for you. Being a " foodie" do you find that when eating out there is a general lack of vegetables? We are moving to Boavista in July from California. And when we've visited Portugal, we found that potato and possible spinach was the vegetable we had eating out most. Im assuming since I'll be doing more cooking at home, I can make more veggies at home!

Most traditional Portuguese restaurants don't have a wide selection of veggies. Potatoes and a very simple salad are the norm. Of course that's not a hard and fast rule and larger cities will have a wider selection.
