    My 2017 3.5 averages 21.5 mpg. I live in WV with lots of hills and seldom travel highways. On a trip from D.C. to OBX, I got almost 24mpg. I also have off road tires and fox 2.0 suspension.

    It's not EcoBoost, it's ECO or BOOST. Great line :-)

      Technically you're right, however, one can take advantage of the refinement difference created from DI and turbo charging of Ecoboost and get great mpg at the same time, but this is not for the sport-minded driver; more for the regular commuter, weekend project doer. And so, I've figured out how to get Eco and Boost together. I don't think either NA choice could give me the 24 mpg that I'm getting. Certainly not the 5.0.
      If I had two identical trucks: one with the base 3.5 liter NA V6, and one with the 2.7 liter EB V6 that cost $800 more and set about commuting with each, taking turns driving; with light pressure on the gas pedal so as not to waste gas for no good reason (you know like any sane person), I'd likely get around the same mpg in both trucks or somewhere close. The NA engine is lighter, and it is efficient and so I could probably eek out around 23-24 mpg like I do in my current F150 with the 2.7 EB. commuting. It's hard to know for sure, but I'd say at least on the highway, they'd both be close.
      The big difference here though is refinement. That base engine would seem horrible to drive by comparison. I live in the Upper Cumberland region of TN. It's quite hilly. My truck will take on 5% grades with cruise control on and never downshift to 5th gear on days without a strong headwind. The base V6 could not do this. It would likely do that "race up the hill" phenomenon that many smaller-displacement NA engines do cruising on the highway. With my 2.7 Ecoboost-powered F150, I can acceptably accelerate from a stop, up a 2% grade, up to highway speeds and never exceed 1900 RPM. Why is this important? It's Refinement! It feels rich; it feels classy; it feels like you've got a well-engineered and expensive automobile when you're driving something that doesn't have to scream RPM to get power and torque.
      That's what makes Ecoboost so great! If you think driving is a sport and/or like high revs, then I'd agree that their is not much advantage to Ford's Ecoboost power trains. The 5.0 may actually return a little better mpg for those who keep the pedal down; and the same could be said for those who are dedicated towers and heavy haulers; but for those who your trucks for a little of this and a little of that and view driving as transportation and use your trucks as light-duty tools; and appreciate low and mid-range torque; then the EB's are good at both; even at the same time.

    How many miles are on the truck? There is a "break in" period for the engine and that is between 2 to 3k miles. It clearly states in the manual not to measure mpgs before this time.

    • @kleetus92
      @kleetus92 7 лет назад +2

      That's a good point too. Kinda forgot about that with modern motors, but yeah, they all take a break in period.

    • @chokekoo983
      @chokekoo983 7 лет назад

      The ODO say nearly 800 miles. If I'm not mistaken, Ford only requires a 500 mile breaking in period in their manual. But still, it doesn't make as much of a difference as people think. These days, manufacturers usually do a lot of break in time at the factory on a dyno. There shouldn't be more than few a % increase once the vehicles is broken in.

    • @onoff314

      Hey. Well, I noticed a 3 mpg difference once my 2016 F150 non ecoboost 3.5L V6 engine hit passed the 3k "break in" period. Yeah, my automotive friend told me something similar what you mentioned above, and for most vehicles that most likely the case. But, for my truck, I personally went from 16 to 19 mpgs around town after 3k.

    Ok, so I have a question here, wouldn't a transmission with more gears that changes gears more often be a bit "busier" than say a transmission with lower gears? Could more work on the transmission (changing gears more often) lead it to wear out more quickly? I'm not a mechanic, just curious lol

    • @kleetus92
      @kleetus92 7 лет назад +2

      With more components comes more chances for failure, that is true. Service life really boils down to clutch pack surface area and the load it's intended to handle, along with effective cooling and fluid viscosity and cleanliness. If it's designed correctly there should be no reason it does not last.
      I have a 2006 Lincoln LS Sport with the 5R55 transmission and I have 189k miles on it. Owned it since 24k miles, I've done 2-3 partial fluid changes, and it shifts and behaves as good now as it did when I first got it. A solid design will get you a lot of service.
      All that said however, I would not buy a manufactures first production run of a new design of vehicles, I don't care who makes them... They are going to find issues, even if it's just software.

    The new 10 speed is amazing, but it scares the living shit out of me.
    Like you said at 2:20 in the video "The transmission is jumping around all over the place"
    When something is constantly changing and moving, things tend to break sooner than later. The transmission is in non stop change, wearing itself down. Constantly switching gears makes me cringe knowing it wont stay in one gear as my cruse control is on set to one speed. As time passes by, we will see the repercussions from this. Hopefully there are none..

    Does the fuel economy on the truck differ from 2H to all wheel drive?

    • @eddiediffer5060
      @eddiediffer5060 5 лет назад

      It stays in 2 H. If in inclement weather, you can switch to 4H on the fly. Not really necessary though. If your'e stuck, put her in neutral and turn it to 4L. After back up to speed, the truck will not exceed a particular RPM....reminding you to turn in back into 4H or 2H.

    • @eddiediffer5060
      @eddiediffer5060 5 лет назад

      It's not all wheel drive, it's 4 wheel drive. Yes gas mileage will kill you if your riding around in 4H. You don't need to though. Keep it in 2 wheel drive setting until you need it.

    BUYER BEWARE! For 2017, this new engine is the only one that gets mated to the new 10 speed transmission, and the only one that has dual fuel injection, combining both port fuel and direct injection for better efficiency and reliability. But this will last only for one year. In 2018, buyers can have more and better choices depending on their needs and budgets.
    If you don't need or want or want to pay for the top-of-the-line power train that cost well over $2,000 extra, but like these new features of ten-speed and dual fuel injection, you need to wait for 2018.
    Why??? In 2018, there will be five engine choices instead of only two, if you count the 3.5 liter twice (one standard power and one high output for the Raptor only) that will get these same technologies added to those engines: Dual fuel injection (for the four gas engines), mated to the ten-speed transmission, and auto start/stop (again, for the gas engines).
    In fact, during the Super Bowl announcement and for the next few days thereafter at auto shows, etc.; Ford announced alot of power train info for next model year. There will be a new 3.0 V6 diesel. It will be mated to the ten speed; it will likely be very expensive only in higher trims and only in extra cab configurations, because this is what the other two manufacturers have done with diesels.
    There will also be a reworked 2.7 liter Ecoboost that will mate to the ten speed and have dual fuel injection just like this new 3.5; it is also likely that the 2.7 will have other new and/or improved components such as newly-designed turbos.
    There will also be a reworked 5.0 V8 naturally-aspired engine that will be dual fuel injection and mated to the ten speed.
    Even the base engine will change; it will be a new 3.3 liter with dual fuel injection V6 that will be naturally-aspired and mated to the current six speed with slightly less displacement but with the same peak power and peak torque, and likely, a little flatter torque, since it'll include DI in its design.
    The only power trains that will be carried over from 2017 will be the two 3.5 Ecoboost versions that are new for 2017.
    Why is this significant??? Because any new technologies Ford offers in lower power train choices has to remain price competitive with the General, the Ram, Toyota, and Nissan, who are all getting further and further behind the motor company from Dearborn. Right now the 2.7 liter Ecoboost is around an $800-$900 premium over the base power train and the 5.0 liter is at or about $1500 over the base power train; and so Ford will have no choice to offer these new reworked power trains at prices that are competitive with the other guys' premium power trains that are low-tech by comparison.
    The diesel on the other hand, must only be price competitive with the Ram 1500 Ecodiesel, and the Ram Ecodiesel is currently banned and may still be banned by the time Ford's new PowerStroke comes out, so expect that the diesel start at or about the $40K+ price point, as it may be the only 1/2-ton diesel available by the time it arrives.
    My point is that if you like the direction Ford is going with their power trains, but you don't need the highest output of power or want to pay the highest price premium for a Ford F150 powertrain, or you'd like to see even better mpg with no sacrifices, then I'd recommend waiting until 2018 where one can get the same technologies with the V8 or the 2.7 liter that's now available with the 3.5 liter. You'll also have the advantage of finding out if these new technologies are likely going to be reliable or not in this one-year hiatus where these technologies are available only in the highest-billed power train. The 2.7 and 5.0 and even the new base engine are all likely going to return slightly higher mpg with at least the same performance or better, and there all going to include at least some of the new technologies employed with the 3.5 liter this model year.

    All new = avoid for a couple of years. I guess people forgot all the issues the original 3.5 ecoboost had in 2011.

      Not "all new", more like "thoroughly revised". They took the Gen 1 3.5 EB and addressed it's shortcomings and problem areas, resulting in a Gen 2. The Gen 1 3.5 EB was "all new".

      F-150 KING OF TRUCKS By unstoppable, do you mean having turbo issues, timing chain failures, limp mode, and overheating issues? These things are complete JUNK. Look up carcomplaints.com and the only engines that have issues are the ecoboosts. This is all coming from a diehard Ford guy who is the proud owner of 2016 Special edition 5.0. I've driven that ecoboost garbage and it sucks.

      Oh and the other trucks from Ram, GM , Toyo don't have issues...your a hypocrite...the EB3.5 is more popular and they sell more than the Hemi...maybe the sheer numbers are why you hear more about them and the others are liars...thats what I've noticed. GM and Ram guys, front ends fall off, rust, huge quality issues...but they keep screaming EB problems are bigger. I and 2 of my brothers and many nephews bough EB F150. No issues cept for 1 on timing chain. We all got the recall but none needed them changed...it turns out its the idiot behind the wheel!!! I've never lost a race to a Ram or GM. The 5.3 LS is a ticking time bomb and the Hemi is a Pig on gas!!! The 3 liter Eco Diesel is a POS...one neighbor of ours has been through 3 engine changes..and front end issue...get your head out of the sand!!!

    see tbe problem is that ppl thibk turbo cbarging a small engine is supposs tl give u better mpg while more power but thats total bs. a turbo is adding more fuel and air so hows that gonna save gas. it.doesnt! manufacturer want u think so thought its always eaaier and wayy cheaper for them to male a small engine and slap a tirbo then a say a nice v8. this is why i eould buy a v8 over the ecoboost. no lag probably tje same mpg

  • @robhar82
    @robhar82 7 лет назад

    a gas truck with a small motor that's where u get your good gas mileage but it would barely have enough power to pull itself so let's slap some turbos on it and work it like a dog lol

    Oh wait bad idea motor is revving to high and tearing itself apart let's slap a 10 speed in it to keep the revs down and maby it'll last till warranty is up

      My 3.5 runs flawlessly and is under warranty for 60k more miles....2 years after it's paid off. Sounds like your just agitated by the fact that the 6 banger can hang right there with, if not out run your V8 5.0 Coyote engine.

  • @assaltmaster89
    @assaltmaster89 7 лет назад

    Well no duh that's why the EcoBoost that Eco is a different color than the Boost when you're not hitting your gas pedal the turbos are not turned on the turbo is only turn on when you hit the gas pedal so hard cuz it has to give you that extra power also I am sick of seeing so many reviews misrepresenting this truck it is not 17 in the city and 21 on Highway is 21 combined they did a testing here in Michigan in the Everest 18 and a half miles to the gallon in the city and it was 25 miles to the gallon on the highway for a combined of 21 not 21 on the highway so many people misrepresent this they need to stop making videos if they don't know what they're talking about cuz there's a lot of them out there that keeps saying 21 on Highway and that's just not true it's 21 combined combined does not mean Highway

Fill drive and refill on the same loop and do them all...the EB is best in gas mileage!!!

      Over the road trucks have 18 speeds so it's only reasonable to think that smaller hauling vehicles are catching up to the big boys for the same reason the big boys have them.
