I was quoted $2500 to blow insulation on my attic, i spent 700 hundred on insulation the blowing machine rental was free and i paid my nephew $100 for helping me 3 hours. It cost me $800 total
I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle ruclips.net/user/postUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. Nonetheless, I like the simple stride to step directions laid out there.
I know most people are taking it out now, stapling compressed foil type insulation to the rafters and then putting rockwool bats on the ceiling instead. Helps stop solar gain and reduces the heat loss into the attic from below. Also allows any alterations or work to happen without messing up the insulation every time.
I just priced this myself. Machine is free if you buy the "fibre glass" (which is much more expensive) and at least 10 bags. Here each bag of fibre glass is $90 each, celulous is $16 a bag. You need almost twice as much celulose to make the same R value as fibre glass. The machine is only $125 per day rental. There are pro's and con's to fibre glass and celulose but after all the math and research its way cheaper and just as good to buy the cellulose and just rent the machine. - These prices vary and this is in my area (of Canada). Don't forget to SEAL your leaks before blowing in.
Just in the process of replacing my roof and 1/2 of the plywood sheeting that was covered in mold on my house because the sofits were blocked with insulation. Please put up baffles. Save yourself 30k. 😢
I think a cool idea for a future project would be to make a folding ladder on hinges that pulls down from inside the attic. It'll be an interesting build if you do it all from your own ideas.
We had blown insulation in our house when we bought it, but a few years later we had a huge sand storm, which was record breaking. There was about 2” of dirt on every lawn, road and roof. Anyway, sometime later, I got up in the attic to do something, and the insulation was covered with dirt. We had to vacuum out the dirt and insulation, then blow in new insulation. I’d never want to go through that again. Yeah, I saw the land thing in Scotland a couple years back. It’s the same thing as buying a piece of land on the moon, a star, and becoming part owner of an actual legitimate country, except it’s located on an old offshore drilling rig or something like that. Any of these do make for a unique gift that most people have probably not received before.
Great job! Consider making more videos on the "backend" of home improvement. Always interesting seeing you work on stuff like this as opposed to the finish work.
I used to work in an Owens Corning factory, we turned all the batts that were too shitty to sell into the blow in insulation. I always wondered how that stuff was installed cause it didn't make sense to me, never know you literally just blow it in and leave it there lol
Excellent video. I'm reviewing finishing my attic: I need to know how to properly vent (plastic baffles?) and insulate the underside of the roof (ridge vent and eve/soffit vents already in place) before adding drywall to the new ceiling.
So you bought 10 bags and added 5 inches? How many square feet is your house? I need to do this, but I was thinking I need like 30 bags to add that much
I did this a few months ago. My home is 1,100 sq/ft with an attic above the whole thing. We thought we would need 30ish bags to get to a depth of 17” from nothing. We only used 11 bags.
@@bri9unruh wow! That’s it? My house is 1,375 square feet with an attic above the entire thing. Already has some insulation, so I probably only need 10-15 bags
Just seeing this video after I tried to solo it....Yes, its not a one man job and I learned the hard way....I got some good exercise running back and forth. An insulation company wanted $1,585.00 for 216 square feet area. I got it done on my own for around $450.00.
I've got about 4' of headroom in my attic at the highest point. Horrible, I have to crawl around the attic on my hands and knees to do anything. Let alone try to add batting.
Interesting. I can't find one of these atticats in central FL (or the corning loose-fill). So, I'm (for all practical purposes) stuck buying some generic loosefill, but at least I get their blower for "free".
Coming from a country that doesn't really use insulation, that just looks like an absolute mess to me. I would rather use that expanding foam stuff. What happens when you need to get to a light fixture??
Ha. 6 bags. You're making another trip. When we did this 10 years ago in our house in NY we had to add about 15 inches of insulation over 1000 square feet of attic space. We ended up buying 65 bags.
You a bit itchy after that bud? I would recommend wearing a tyvek suit and goggles doing that procedure. Otherwise good info, didn't even realize home depot rented out that machine.
how about attic baffles? i have same attic and to prevent future mold everyone who does this professionally recommended attic baffles. is there a reason you didn't do it?
I've been googling and I haven't really found a definitive answer. Some people say it is ok, some don't. It would be an extremely hard job if you can't. You would have to splice and add more slack in order to staple it up higher.

I can't imagine this type of insulation is used in Europe. I've never seen it anywhere. We always use our attics functionally and just insulate the roof. But I guess it works.
lol.. there is several reason we charge so much to do this dirt and hot job. Its not a one man job, even 2 men will have a hard time doing this you need to rotate out the attic guy often if its a long blow. We are doing a radiant barrier as well which helps lift cold air during winter and heat during the summer time up and out.
