- On this episode of fishing taste test I finally got the opportunity to try and catch and cook a Jack Crevalle. I have had so many people ask me if Jack Crevalle are good to eat. I couldn't give them an answer because I have never eaten one myself. This ended up being one of my most thrilling taste tests yet. Watch the full video to the see the results.
Respect to anyone who has the balls to eat this fish and give it a go. So many people say negative things about this fish without even trying it! Great vid!!
I had heard my whole life how bad Jack Crevalle was until I ate it. I had my son in law keep one for me and immediately bleed it. The meat was red just like your's but it tasted great. Next time I went out I brought 6 small ones backed and cooked them for my office staff and they all loved them. I'm with you, if that's what you catch, there is no reason not to eat them.
You still have the passion for fishing when you fish professionally and you still get your guts ripped out when you lose a fish. LOL.
Key West Kayak Fishing every fisherman, professional or not loses their shit when a fish comes off
This is crazy, I just filmed a jack crevalle cooking video today! Glad to see you also enjoyed it. The one I cooked up was a bit bigger than yours, so it looks like they are still pretty tasty as they get big. I cooked mine teriyaki style, it almost tasted like hibachi chicken! Great video, and I look forward to seeing your next taste test.
If you bleed the jack before tossing them in the cooler they taste even better
dude you deserve a lot more subscribers. Keep up the good work!
Thanks man appreciate it.
I love eating Jack Crevalle and we have lots of them here in Pohnpei, Micronesia. From the smallest one to the large one's. This is my favorite fish beside the bluefin tuna. You can eat it raw, boil it, or bake it, or just do any cooking; it is still good. Thank you for showing this video clip. Enjoy your trip and hope you get Jack Crevalle.
You did it! Sweet video man! I have been waiting on you to do my suggestion for weeks lol! You always deliver brant! Thanks man!
Thanks man. I may have to take you up on that bass fishing one day.
AnglerUp with Brant you are more than welcome to take me up on it any time bro! I can be the second Marcus that kicks your butt in a challenge lol 😂
I got a big one. He was cleaned pretty quick. We coated him with some olive oil, butter, lemon juice, and tony's. Then I grilled him medium/rare. I figured it looked like a beef steak, so that is about how I cooked it. It was really good that way.
I'm from Indonesia.
Ppl in Borneo island love that fish!
Another great video 😎. I really liked it when you had several other people try different types of fish when you first started doing the fish taste. But by all means. Keep up the great work.
Thanks. Sometimes it's hard to get people to participate.
I've caught tons of Jack Crevalle here in the upper Keys and always released them but I am going to bring the next one home and cook it up. Thanks Brant great job.
You're awesome! I love your videos, and your taste test are great!! Congrats on 2k subscribers
Thank you!
Nice save there at the end nothing better than when a plan comes together keep up the good work great video👍
YES! I"ve been waiting for this vid
My mom always cook sour soup or slow cook and it's one of my favorite fish. I'm Asian anyway!! Lol.
When I was younger we used to give chinese neighbor lady all our fresh fish heads. She would be so excited!!☺️🇺🇸🐟
Great video and interesting conclusion. I saw a FB vid of a chef at Flora Bama that cooked a big Jack. That meat was so dark it looked like a Tuna. He went on to say the meat has more of a steak texture and should be prepared as such. He prepared and cooked the cubes like steak and then served to random customers at the restaurant. They all thought it was steak instead of a saltwater fish. I'm gonna try the same on a big Jack when they start running soon.
Took home three about a month ago. I scored them and rubbed with olive oil, garlic, parsley, and pepper and smoked over pecan wood. Some of the best tasting fish Ive eaten. Dont know why they get a bad rep!
Nice! That sounds good.
I love these taste test videos I'm going to try and make my own sometime keep it up
I've eaten jack Crevalle up to 20" fork. I bleed them and cut out the blood line they make great tacos
Try stingray next
subbed, thanks for the great content. just a suggestion...cut the fish at the gills and bleed it as soon as you catch and it will taste much better. Second, when you drop the fish on to the pan, lay it down away from you so you dont splash yourself with oil. Tight lines brother!
Old video, I know, but my uncle used to smoke these bad boys and my gosh they were fantastic!!!
Congrats on 2k ur my favorite youtuber!!!
Thank you!
just caught me two Jack's today.. a 26" and 30".. let's see how they're going to taste lol
Loved the video! Congrats on 2k subs!
Thank you.
I think we are taught at a young age what to eat and what not to eat, but if you look around the world at the fish people eat and here in the states we have always been told what's edible and what's not. I'm from Tennessee And I make my way down to Florida's forgotten coast in the spring and summer to fish, and there is one of the AJ's we catch that we have been "told" isn't good to eat so we always throw them back, and hard head catfish are supposed to be bad, we don't keep them because we have catfish here, but there's a couple to try. keep it up!
Hi Brant! I just started watching your videos and they are awsome!!! I go on spring break every year down to Fort Myers Florida. I bought a Penn Pursuit 2 last year in the 4000 size... i was wondering if you would know what would be a good rod to pair with it for fishing for spanish mackerel, trout, redfish and snook for $50 or less. I know that its not a big budget but thats all i have! Thanks in advance!
I caught a bunch of 12-15 inch jacks in daytona beach and cooked them with lemon and old bay. they were very good!
Try stingray
Grill that Jack on the grill with some Monteral Steak seasoning... and do not forget to bleed it when you catch it and take that dark meat center blood line out. That will make it sooo much better. ... Also great for smoked fish dip too.
Or for a nice deep fried fish bite. The Meat stays nice and firm. The Big 12-35lbers' make a great Steak on the grill. Just bleed it , then soak the filet in cold water over night in a gallon zip-lock..or marinade etc etc. . But the grilling is an excellent way. Also , it's really high in Omega 3's.
I also hate that people give it such a bad Rep, It's prolific, Fight's Like all Get-Out, and to me, is a step-up from Tuna. I call it the "Poor Man's Yellow Fin". ;)
J.T. RipTideProStaff How do I bleed my catch?
slit the connection between the belly and the jaws, right under the gills. depending on the size of the Jack, it may be a little bit up in there, but cut it more towards the belly side.
Don't break it's back, you want the heart to keep beating for a bit, and then toss it in the cooler or head down in a bucket.
Bucket first of course, just so you don't get the cooler to be a bloody mess. Point it away from you, cause some times it does spurt a bit and will ruin your jeans. (lol)

Jacks are fantastic with butter and lemon & lemon pepper
Here in Nantucket (an island 30mi off the coast of Massachusetts) people eat jacks all the time when they come here
Go over to mobile bay and catch specks, drum, delta bass, reds, etc. it would be cool
Yo! Your face when you started chewing it! 😆
awesome job man!!! we have caught some donkey jacks at three mile but like you I've never eaten one.. next time I'm going to keep and try one myself..tight lines brother 👍
Thanks. Same to you.
Just caught some small Jack 5/6/17 , Remove skin and dark red meat from under skin and this is good eating fish. Fried it and oven grilled it with a spicy barbecue sauce. Maybe the larger ones suck, but the small ones we caught were great.
You are awesome I love your videos so much please keep doing trash fish taste test
Thank you.
AnglerUp with Brant bleed the big ones
Trust me Brant, after all the horrible things I've heard about it all my life I honestly expected to see you spitting it out on your plate... interesting video, nice to know!
In Barbados their know as a crab cavali because of their texture, and in Barbados we eat all sorts of fish, my favorite fish to eat is a bar jack but their know as rainbow cavalis
I did a catch and cook on the beach down here in Naples on a Jack Cravelle and it was not good for me. Be interested in seeing what you say... I ate it once and have avoided since. Maybe mine was a little bigger. I cooked it the same as you and mine was definitely FISHY.
Love these videos bro. I think a Sabiki taste test would be epic. Northern Mackerel, ruby red lips, cigar minnows, pearly razors, sand perch and hard tails. haha
Great idea.
Great job Brant, keep up the good work brother!
That looks good brant! Great video! Makes me hungry.lol
Thanks man appreciate it.
+AnglerUp with Brant Thumbs up! Thanks!
Love the videos. Gonna look your charter up next time out there! 👌🏻
Thanks!
I guess I’ll be adding JC to my list of things not to throw back.
Lol I think had the same look on my face when l first ate one. It's not bad but I think I'm spoiled after eating mangroves, whiting, and flounders. 🎣👍
That’s really good to know!
If you breaded that and seasoned it then fried it , it would be good. I like crab like texture.
Them smaller Jack's are the best to eat cause their not much of a blood line in em so it doesn't really mess of the flavor of the fish.
I really enjoy watching your videos, great job!! I just ordered a shirt and decal from you, and I hope to one day make it up to Pensacola and do a charter trip with you.
Sweet! Thank you!
Hey Jeremy, check your email. We are emailing you something regarding your purchase. Long story short our very last charcoal carolina was damaged in shipping. I am going to refund your shirt money and send you a bag full of other stuff. Once the shirt comes back into stock I will send you one.

I will at some point. Thanks
I am traveling to Clearwater Florida what would be biting off the piers there
I actually catch 1-3lb ones on a sabiki and they are decent eating
I do it on the Navarre Pier btw you should give it a try!
exotic lemonlover those are hard tails
Nope you can get Jacks off the Navarre pier even on a sabiki...
exotic lemonlover yes you can, but the majority will be hardtails.
"Oh hawa! You keep?"
NEW DRINKING GAME: Every time he says, "Jack cravelle" take a drink! lol 😁
i dont know why so many people say jack crevalle is not good to eat i love eating it
Awesome videos! People who aren't subbed should!
Thanks.
I'm right there with you brother. NOT a fan of lightning either. That $hit hurts!!!
i would of never thought about jacks as good eating
Not bad at all.
too bad you didn't have ''I'm so excited and I can't hide it!" playing in the background, I would have laughed so hard!
Is that a Titan or an Armada you drive?
ive ate jack before but it was a way bigger one, it was greasy but besides that it wasn't to bad.
Hey man idk if u have them around there like we do on the south side of Florida but try to eat a blow fish

ik now I'm late but great job !an u really went over for this video
Can u have a fishing meet up in gulf breeze or Pensacola
Yeah I will plan something at some point for sure.
Hmmm,,,I'll have to give it a go, ,try it
whats the website for your charter
Go To San Sebastian Inlet State Park Yoy Catch Very Big Ones
Taste test suggestion:
Tomtate/ruby lips/ whatever you wanna call it
been eating them for a while now I even eat blues. but I brine the blues.
what pound test do you use for flounder
Hey bro you should come and do some fishing with me in costa rica south pacific..cheers
Did you leave the blood line on the meat ?
What rod and reel size did you use
You mentioned not knowing what the big ones taste like. The bigger ones around 8 pounds and up are disgusting. Small ones are fantastic, I keep them whenever I get them. Once they get close to double digits for weight though they taste extremely fishy and are not at all enjoyable. Give a big one a shot if you'd like but I didn't like them big.
If it's got the taste and texture of crab, it could probably be used in faux crab cakes.
u ever fished at Grand Hotel? If Not Do a video of fishing their. It is in Mobile Alabama
If u can't do that do a Video of u in Mobile BAY
You should try amberjack next.
David Bridgemohan can't keep them in Florida
will can you try red fish
If you are a licensed Guide can you write off your boat payments and other tackle on your taxes?
Does anyone know what his setup is?
Love it :)
Do bonefish if you get them where you are.

Great video!even if i didn't watch te video
The*
I love videos man!!!
Thank you.
i've heard to bleed em and soak em in milk and they're really good.curious
Yes bleed it before you ice him and you will be amazed on the taste
I saw on a different video you are supposed to cut them behind and below the head to bleed them out and keep the meat from getting bloody. Check out zoffingers video, he shows you how to it.
Awesome vids btw
The small Jacks you don't really need to worry about. I bleed fish on a daily basis for my charter clients. You for sure need to bleed big fish. Thanks for watching.
AnglerUp with Brant Ok I see, I've only fished saltwater twice. Keep up the awesome videos
Bleed your fish right after you catch them break a gill. People in the SE don't bleed their fish. We in the NW bleed all fish.
We call those size "pan fry size"
