SBF for me, but I admit I’m a Ford guy at heart. I also love the LS, and the only performance engine I currently own is a 408 LS. It’s hard to argue with the LS being the cheapest and easiest to build. But I think they are equally reliable when built to the same level. I think the trouble you have had with SBFs is they were likely built right to begin with or you had an unusual problem that wasn’t the SBF’s fault, like the converter charge pressure killing the thrust bearing on the bad Apple. That wasn’t the engines fault.
love both and started with sbf but now own nothing but ls but the only thing i hate about ls motors is having to pull the heads to get to the lifters on a "stock" block
Always had SBC stuff... working on a LT1 build now and have a LS2 block in the corner to build soon. Worked on a bunch of SBF stuff the last few years. First a 306 build and then a 408 SBF later for the same car. Haven't flipped yet but they are growing on me lol
John you can in fact make a mod motor sound nasty but they dont need anything but some stock cams and they will make some serious power for what they are same goes for the cylinder heads.
you are 100 % right JOHN MIHOVETZ makes over 3,000 HP with a 4.6 L 281 CID Engine with mostly stock parts, i dont think any LS has been in the 5.80's yet
Ford guy here, price per HP the LS wins hands down. But at the power levels you’re talking there really isn’t a damn thing left stock on them so…does it really matter. I have a 351w in my Capri and going LQ9 solely for the reliability and HP per dollar. My pockets aren’t deep and I want to make her move out. Everyone has their preference, used to always defend the SBF and I’ve outran a lot of LS cars I shouldn’t have with my baby 306 sn95….but to me anymore if it’s cool and makes good power I could GAF less if there’s a blue oval or bowtie on it. I like Horse Power end of story. Keep up the good content and I’ll be in for Brown Sugar.
As a Ford guy, LS, cost available, the aftermarket parts are cheaper for LS. A mild build with Aluminum heads 351w $4K, LS pull out 6.0, $1,500. For that reason LS is better.
Sbf as I am a big Ford guy, but the Windsor was designed in 1961. It wasn’t until 1997 that the Ls was introduced and it copied many design aspects of the sbf. The Ls has features that didn’t exist when the sbf was made. Personally the comparison would be sbf vs sbc in which case the sbf is far superior. Considering the situation is 1960’s vs the 2000’s one would think the newer engine would be superior, but here this video is comparing old to new and yet the old still holds its own against the new kid on the block
I'm sbf fan yes it does cost alil more to built an keep together but makes better power my opinion don't get my the ls is still good engine but sbf and sbc are the kings of small blocks
LS is better for the average weekend mechanic that's on a budget. Also, parts availability is very, very, important. Getting the car fixed by someone else seems to be better with the LS because it is less complicated with more common parts. I love the SBF because it's tough, reliable, and creates a lot of power but parts that are easier to get is better in the long run. Thanks!!!
