- Howling wind. It can torment us in the backcountry. But few are the camp sites, especially above tree line, that the wind won’t find. Perhaps the most frustrating of the windy-weather camp tasks is setting up your shelter. Adventure photographer and host of Backpacking TV, Eric Hanson recently battled the infamous gusts of Patagonia on a solo trek and quickly learned some key tricks for setting up your home when the air is blowing fiercely.

The corners with the GRAY webbing in the corners (as opposed to red webbing) go INTO the wind so the porches are sheltered when the doors are open. This is how he pitched it but he didn't mention the color coding.

I was looking for information on how to set up a tent in the wind, and boy, was I glad to see the tutorial being made with my very own tent model: my trusty MSR Hubba Hubba (not sure if it´s the Hubba Hubba, but close enough!). Great video!

yes. it has one above each door and one on each side.
I get the feeling early models didn't have the guys or guying points. I don't see them on these early videos. But the one I bought in 2017 has 4 guys. I have seen some reviews that say you need extra guys, but there is not really anywhere to put them other than just doubling up on the existing guys, and in my opinion they are not necessary.

@@racerx3669 My ?2015 Hubba Hubba NX does not seem to have any good guying points. There are some places that you could attach to but they are fairly low down on the fly. The instructions say that two guy lines are included but I am fairly sure mine did not have them. Has anyone else found this? Also only 6 pegs are supplied so nothing to attach the guy lines to if you did have them. I like the tent but find it annoying trying to identify the tent version I have. Is it V7?

I don't think you realise how beneficial this video is. I am a fan of tarps; but just could not get my tarp set up today in the wind. But I know I could a tent.

Question 1: would it be a good idea to clip a lanyard from you (maybe your belt) to your tent or fly until at least one part is secured to the ground? (Seriously, with my luck, the dang thing would slip out of my hands and go sailing off to the great beyond.)

Nice one! I’ve just come back from a trip where I was challenged to put my Hubba Hubba up in a gale and rain.
I found putting a guy in a carabiner on my pack gave me some assurance it wasn’t going to blow away 😂 I also had the footprint so was able to set up outer first.
But even with the guys out the ridge pole really flexed in the wind, no damage but really bent. I noticed yours was underneath, mine is on top so wondered how yours faired?
I've just purchased and pitched the Hubba Hubba for the very first time and I wondered, too, whether the "correct" position of the ridge pole was above or underneath the other pole. I struggled a bit to get the ridge pole into the dedicated grommets, is that normal because the tent is still new and the fabric has to stretch a little ?

The official line from MSR is that the short cross pole goes on the top of the long pole (I emailed them to double-check this and they confirmed - it should above/over the longer pole). Feedback from people who've used the Hubba Hubba NX in high winds is that having the cross pole in the wrong places reduces the tent's ability to handle the wind. Sadly MSR failed to include this info in the pitching instructions. Hopefully they will correct the omission at some point.
I prefer to set the cross pole ON TOP so that the wind preasure goes against the main pole and not against the plastic link that connect them as it was once broken in a strong winds.
Agreed, cross pole is better on top, even though I've seen MSR videos with it underneath.

I was in wild, windy and marvelous chilean patagonia a month ago and saw some cheap tents just blown to pieces... I would like to know how the MSR Elixir behaves in such conditions
but not only the wind visited our camp frequently...
one night a big puma was walking between the tents. As we smelled it, the hair at the back of our heads stood up automatically, ancient atavisms of long gone by experiences of mankind...
would our tent also be "puma-safe"?
i would like to know too how the elixir holds up in strong winds and heavy rain, i'm going to ushuaia on december and plan to go through the entire chilean patagonia, i will purchase the elixir in a few weeks so i'd like to know how it behaves in bad weather
Heavy duty tents such as the Elixir or one of our All Season tents will perform better in windy conditions than other MSR lightweight backpacking tents. That being said, the best thing you can do in high winds is to set up your tent near a natural barricade whenever possible. It is also advised to take advantage of all the possible guy points on your tent and fully stake it out as a taught tent will prove to be much more rigid in high winds. If leaving camp for the day we recommend taking down your tent as the less time your tent spends exposed to high winds, the better.
Msr has very good tents, with a 3 season or 4 season you will e good in patagonia, and about the puma, is hard to see them attaking people or tents, the most times he is scared from people, i know that because im chilean.

I just pitched my brand new Elixir 2 (2018 model) last night for the first time while hiking in Snowdonia. A storm rolled in during the night, and the grommets for the poles literally cut through the webbing straps that attached them to the inner of the tent. The poles then popped out and bent, and i was faced with a 5 hour walk back to my car at midnight in the middle of said storm because my tent collapsed. Seriously unimpressed with the Elixir after last night, I thought an MSR tent would have performed better than that.

Question 2: why did you orient the tent that way when the narrowest aspect of the Hubba Hubba, when fully constructed, is the side (2.1 m, vs 2.8 m for head or foot)?

I own a hubba and i plan to buy the gear shed, but on this years trip i encountered some critical storms, will the hubba and the gear shed set up be able to withstand the same storms the hubba alone would?
Properly pitched with the guy lines staked out, the Hubba and the Gear Shed should hold up just fine to a good storm. It does become slightly more difficult to orient the tent according to wind direction since the gear shed takes away from the tents aerodynamic shape. If you're expecting high winds, consider finding a naturally sheltered campsite or pitching the tent on its own.
Which of your tents guys is the best on this conditions (strong wind)? I'm looking for 2ps model.
You would be far better using a pyramid tarp in Patagonia instead of a free-standing double-wall tent with a standard aluminum DAC poles structure. A pyramid is a much more stormproof shelter for the exposed alpine.
How easy is it to find a flat spot in patagonia to set your tent up?
Does MSR sell replacement tent parts? I need a rainfly for my Carbon Flex.

I use the same strategy as the fly. Stake upwind side and let the wind be your helper. Stake out or tie all four corners at distances you know because you've done it with no wind (i.e. allow slack to put hiking poles under the tarp). I use hiking poles and with a black marker mark where they should go based on the foregoing. With the four corners secure place hiking poles and extend to the right height. Works for me; hope it works for you. In any case, practice in no or low wind and have your strategy down for when the wind blows.
