I’m an avid caver. I enjoy exploring, surveying and discovering new caves. Ironically, I would consider myself somewhat afraid of heights but with training and proper gear I very much enjoy the vertical element of caving. I have a picture in my mind of a guy standing next to a nice stereo system that is missing the power cord and looking up at the sky and shaking his fist and yelling ( Damn you ScoutCrafter damn you ) LOL.
Heights is one of my biggest fears. The organizer turned out looking great! I was impressed with how good the cleaner/wax worked. I like the bluing on the pliers or even just the handles. It just make the tool look good. Thanks for sharing this.
I'm okay with heights and tight spaces but I absolutely hate being in a crowded space surrounded by lots of people. Much prefer a tight cave or a roof over a crowded rock concert, or Fifth Avenue on Easter Sunday, or Great Adventure on Fourth of July. Crowds of people make me crawl inside my skin. Btw, lol, those parts organizers and pliers came out great.
Just seeing that picture in the thumbnail of this video, I knew exactly what that was because I saw the documentary and it makes my chest tight every time I see it. I have a little bit of a fear of heights, but I have an extreme claustrophobia.
I live 600 metres from the beach. If I go beach fishing, I am careful going to the shed so I don't stumble on a brownie (2nd deadliest snake in the world), don't lean against the galvo shed and pick up a redback (Spider), shuffle my feet when walking out to the sandbar to scare the stingrays, and get back before the gutters fill up and let the sharks in. But I couldn't go walking around New York at 3 in the morning.
So, our lives intertwine again... I have three of the blue storage bins, from my father. No rust here in dry mile high, even if Neil Young says rust never sleeps... As for caving, I was a mountain rescue volunteer for 5 years (while being paid paramedic for a different agency), and we did a weekend rescue practice in a commercial cave that took us deep and narrow into a normally off-limits area. Several members backed out. I'm not sure why, but it never bothered me. We practiced pulling out volunteer "victims" ...some of which were mighty far in, and it was a tight squeeze with a plastic sled to get them out. This, obviously in pitch dark, except for our portable lights. We all understood the risks. It had been known for years that victims tend to tense up and become self-trapped, and one of the keys was to try and get them to relax, so we could pull them out. Still, it was pretty intense, even with fake victims. Now retired, my worries are with the future of grandkids. Thanks, as always, for an interesting show. Wayne out West (Colorado)
I think I’m probably more afraid of what you’ve described in the caves and close quarters claustrophobia because that relates to death, which scares me the most. I probably wouldn’t want to drown in a deep cold place like lake superior either. Lol. Fun fact your brain has a mechanism to make you stop thinking about your own mortality after 90 seconds. If you’re like me and have ever been stricken with instant panic due to thoughts of death, you realize the intense panic stops after about a minute and a half no matter what, you can still dwell on death but you calm down whether you want to or not.
The old photos of the workers walking on the beams of the Empire State Building. There was one of a photographer with a large camera sitting on a beam. That really gets me. Also those tight caves.
When I was young, during a structural inspection of a tanker, I was talked into taking a shortcut. I walked across a 2' wide beam, 20' long and about 20' off the bottom of the tank, with no railings, and no safety lines. I felt like I was on a balance beam in the Olympics. To say the least, I never repeated that act of stupidity. Bob
John, you bring up the most interesting topics. When I was in theCoast Guard and stationed at Iwo Jima and yes, that is the islands. The Marines took in World War II. The only entertainment we had on the weekends we exploring the caves that the Japanese dug on the island I there were some pretty tight squeezes that we went through but to this day, I am scared of heights, and in my line of work, I’m always up high you just have to work through it.
Journey to the Center of the Earth, Vintage Bins, and Spelunking, I always used a guide when I took a group Spelunking and stay overnight in the cave. Those were some good times.
John I share the claustrophobia bug with you. Early in my career I worked in the Sewer Repair department and used to work in confined spaces, walked/crawled main sewer lines and worked in tons of manholes. Never had a problem until one day a couple-worker thought it would be fun to put the lid on the manhole when I was down patching the wall. After that experience I had a tough time in any confined spaces. I ended up taking the Supervisors Exam and got promoted into management to avoid being in that position again.
Heights don't bother me much since I used to install TV antennas on homes and home towers, but being stuck in a cave would. I don't even like crawling around under the house in the crawlspace.
I almost shut the video off, because I knew you were going to show the diagram of the guys position in the cave. The thought of being trapped like that will keep me up at night. 27 hours, god help him. Otherwise you turned it around and made a fantastic video. I love that blueing. Beautiful work.
John, I just saw something on the guy dying in the cave last week.I caught the end and thought what a horrible way to pass away. I cant do heights anymore. I went to the top of the WWI museum tower in Kansas City and walked around the whole perimiter with my back to the wall and took a complete panoramic picture to prove I did it and my kids were laughing theyre butts off at me. I was terrified.
The ultimate fear,,,, a severe haircut,, 😂😂😂 ps,, I just found in one of my old tool boxes, a pair of 6inch Lindstrom pliers, I thought I'd lost years ago,, Boy am I happy,, 👌
Yes! Every time I think of that poor guy who got stuck in the cave in Utah it gives me anxiety as well. I read there was a rock protrusion that got hung up under his rib cage that prevented him from being pulled out. Ugh! About 12 years ago while stationed in Guam as a Coast Guard Marine Inspector I became stuck upside down in a small tank on a passenger submarine I was inspecting. I was only stuck for a minute or two before I was pulled out but it was enough to make me freak out due to all the blood rushing to my head and being about 100 degree out. I could not imagine being stuck for 27 hours!
My phobia is exactly the same as yours. I even had to look away from some of the pictures you inserted. I told my wife I have to be cremated, because of my crazy fear of waking up in a coffin.
I’m with mag dad about heights so I went into commercial lighting. I ran a boom truck that went to 40 feet. To start with I never looked down. I soon got over it. Your storage cabinets were well made. I bought one from Handyman stores when I was around 10. My father might have kept it when I moved out. Nice pair of pliers, I think I would only blue the handles. My choice, great show, thank You
I’m not great with heights, but just avoid them. I did night scuba diving with a waterproof light. It was a bit freaky as fish swim to the light or they bump into your side. If they are outside the light beam, you don’t know what just bumped into you. Boy, your neighborhood has lots of turnover. Maybe just lots of old folks passing on. Or just getting the hell out of NY. Holy crap, that is a big valve. Cool locking mechanism. I like both shiny and sometimes bluing.
Great video 👍 What can I say but that Poor Man’s Flea Market is gold 🟨👍. Those vintage storage bins you cleaned up and waxed turned out Fantastic!, awesome job 🔥👍. I guess one of my phobias would be fear of heights. So it is safe to say I probably won’t be doing any rock🧗♂️ climbing anytime soon 😂. Those Buffalo 🦬 Barcalo pliers you restored turned out Fantastic. I think 🤔 either the shiny or bluing look is good, I like both. Again awesome job!👍 Great shot of Old Glory 🇺🇸 flying in the breeze. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Monday. Have a great weekend. 😄👍👍
That new valve you showed appears to be an air valve for a train. For the airline running the length of freight and passenger cars. As I a MTA employee I am sure may have encountered a few. As a conductor/engineer I turned 100s of those a day for 17 years.
I’m not a fan of the dark. I know it makes no sense, but I struggle with the thought of stepping on something sharp or running into someone or something. Silly, I know. I really like the shiny items. I also like the Klein coats when appropriate.
Loved the pliers. Bluing rocks for functionality, but shiny looks so good. Yeah, claustrophobia is my weakness. Not a fan of crawling around in caves. I avoided them in Boy Scouts and Missouri has a ton of caves in the Ozarks.
I have 4 blue metal housed plastic drawer cabinets like those. 2 that size and 2 twice as big. I love them! My sister and I got the smaller ones for Christmas, Dad got one of the big ones that year. The other I found at a flea market. I am missing 3 drawers. Other than that they ARE fantastic! I am afraid of heights and bad claustrophobic. That's why I became an aircraft mechanic. I fight off the fears often! Adrenaline, right?
I couldn't imagine being stuck in a small space like that feller was... man my whole body felt wierd when you showed that picture...good gracious! Poor guy! Seems my knees are scared of the top rung of the ladder these days..lol..they shake... and for me that bluing solution is the best...and thank ya! Have a great weekend Mr. John!
I’m extremely claustrophobic. Moderately fearful of heights. In the ARMY I had to replace the beacon on a 200 foot microwave communications tower. It had an internal ladder so no climbing. Nighttime so used the red light on my hard hat. Oh and I can’t stand needles. I cringe when I have to give blood. I liked the bluing but it sure looked nice all bright and shining. .
Yeah I have a thing about needles come to think about it. I don't even like to see other people poked with needles. I guess I had some bad experiences when I was younger? Like rabies and tetanus shots. The nurse would always say, Now this won't hurt a bit. The liar.
The pliers turned out very nice. I've used Oxpho Blue for years. You can achieve an amazing finish if applied correctly. Those metal cabinets are excellent. I try to snatch them up when I see them. Many times, they will be filled with hardware. I first became aware of them when I was 11 years old. I bought one at a drive-in theatre weekend flea market to keep my model car parts in. I still have it after 50+ years. I think they were made by a company out of Akron, Ohio. Good show as always, Scout. 👍
@Joseph-ef5mh The parts cabinets were made by Akro-Mils -- which is still in business. A factoid from their website: "Akro-Mils is named for Akron + the brothers, Myer, Isidore, and Louis along with their original last name, Schneiderman."
Nicely done Mr John. They look great. Snakes, insects and critters don't bother me but i don't like heights or tight spaces and I'm a bit superstitious 😂
That heavy cast iron valve looks like a brake pipe cock from a railroad car! HEAVY DUTY! My phobia... drains, underwater or above. Especially those with large gaps or large spacing between the grate bars. I get unnerved just looking at them haha!
Great video Scout! I don't mind heights as long as there is something around me, but those guys who climb the radio and TV towers scare me. I remember seeing about the guy stuck in the cave upside down and I have to say just looking at the diagram makes me squirm. That would be a hell of an ending. There are several caves around my home I have been in that get fairly tight and muddy. When I have to start crawling, that's where I quit. A little tip for cleaning plastic: try using a cleaner called Totally Awesome. I'm sure you have seen it before in the dollar stores and such. It's cheap and I have found it cleans plastic like no other but be careful on enamel paints and some decals as it will dissolve them if not diluted. Works good on rubber and grease stains in the laundry too.
My fear is claustrophobia. Anyone that goes into a tight cave has something wrong with them. lol I can't stand it if someone holds me down, not that many can but.....
Seeing Jaws as a kid messed me up. Scared to death to go into the ocean and even lakes. Being in water with limited visibility and I start to imagine all sorts of horrors waiting to take a bite and pull me under... I have those same cabinets. Mine were stocked with screws and stuff. Cost me $4 for each. By the way, thanks for the tip for mounting the buffing cloth wheel to my bench grinder. Looking forward to trying it out!
I used to dive off coral reefs in Florida and I saw some stuff in the water there. So it's not just your imagination. I won't even go in the water without a knife. Maybe a spear too. The water there was clear like the air so I could see everything. Moray eel, barracuda, sharks, of course, manta rays. I've seen all that stuff. Although the worst thing that ever happened to me was being stung by a sea urchin. That hurt. I stubbed my toe on some barnacles too.
I am not good with needles but I couldn't even watch those pictures you put up of guys climbing through those tight caves. FYI the blueing looks good on those pliers.
Hey Scout , Scary movies give me the Willies … 😂 The Willie’s . People saying that always made me laugh . If you get the chance check out the movie the day to earth stood still 1951 . It’s free on RUclips and Tubi. Great old aliens landing on earth. Just a great movie .
The cabinets are super and the Buffalpliers are perfecto. Let me say this about phobia. Your description alone of tight spaces got me in a panic. My biggest fear. I Got stuck for about 10 minutes when caving and panicked. and to this day will not go near a cave. Not even comfortable changing my oil. LOL
The Lost Sea cave in Tennessee is amazing. You can camp in the cave. They have an underground lake and you can take a boat tour on it. I took the boys from my old youth group at my church. It was an awesome trip. Found out I was a bit chlostrophobic myself. I didn't like having to belly crawl through little crevices.
Severe since I was a little kid, even though the closet was big enough to lay down in I freaked and ripped the door off when my Brother and Cousin were messing around and shoved me in there and held the doors. I can watch someone in a tight place on TV and start getting panicky and have to get up and pace around for a few minutes. Grabbed some new pool noodles and a weed trimmer last night on the PMFM. Was expecting an Upside Down Flag at the end.
It is used on the ends of railroad cars to open or close the air brake line when the cars are coupled/ uncompleted. Brake line hose goes on the angled end.
Just the word birth canal made my stomach hurt. You'll never see me crawling trough spaces like that. Then I fear heights too. And I had some spider fear, but as long as its not a tarantula or black widow I stay pretty calm now. I quite liked that pliers shiny, but as you said there is no wrong answers there.
I recalled another man who perished in a cave William Floyd Collins , the sight became somewhat of a carnival atmosphere. I believe they made a movie of the tragedy
I used to have a really good head for heights but since having half a dozen or so bouts of Labrinthitis over the last 15 or so years, I struggle with heights. So when I look down now, or if I watch a video of say those base jumpers that climb tall structures, I get that 'shake' in the foot. Even getting on a roof is a problem. I force myself to do it but I no longer like heights. Re caving. When at University, we went to Wales on a leadership course. To test you with climbing, abseiling, orienteering, caving etc. Bearing in mind I was slim then but still probably 250 pounds, we did a cave called 'The Nutcracker'. It was a nightmare. We had to take our helmets/lights off our heads and move the battery packs on the belt to our sides, then turn our heads sideways so we could get through the cave. At one ppint I got stuck, so had to move the loose stones out of the way, so I could keep moving. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!
BATS scare the heck out of me. I have had 2 bad experiences with them first: I was racing down a hill as a child to get home in time and ran into a bunch of them and they knocked me off my bike and I got hurt pretty bad. second: I was sitting at my computer one night and my Cats were going crazy I shined a flashlight over to where they were and the next thing I saw was the Bat Signal coming at my face. took me 30 minutes to get the darn thing out of my house. Had the wife under the covers Laughing so hard as I was running around screaming every time it flew past me or even touched me. So that's my fear. OK YUCK IT UP. LOL
I have a few of the blue metal housing organizers. I don't like heights but these days the fear is going to the grocery store and waiting on the total with groceries that won't fill half a grocery bag!
Well, I never had a fear of caves until I watched this!! 🤣🤣. Heights don't bother me, unless I'm on something tall and look up, looking down no problem, weird. Great cleanup/resto on the boxes and the pliers, I like the blued look.
Nice work on those storage bins, they are very useful I got 4 of them in my workshop bought from my local car boot sale i think they were £1 each. Good work on those pliers look like new, take care
Funny you mention caving. I have the exact fear even though I’ve been inside caves. It’s not something I care to keep doing that claustrophobic feeling is a little too real for me.
Saw the movie The last descent about that cave and yes made me hold my breath for sure but as a kid I had a fear of elevators for some reason but not so much anymore 😂
An adventure is something you return from and having explored many caves in WV becoming wedged in a tight passage where I would have needed a cave rescue team wasn’t something I wanted to experience. It was enough locking my knee and being able to get out of the last one I was in with one leg working and two elbows. The fellow in UT and Floyd Collins knew what was going to happen and had a very long time to think about it.
I also have a severe case of claustrophobia John and I remember that story when it happened. Just thinking about that incident give me the shakes. If I remember correctly they never retrieved his body, just filled the hole with concrete . Poor guy.
Scoutcrafter, I would say being caught in a fire and being severely burned. I am not afraid of fire as such. I like the bluing of tools, old school style. Bob
I have a fear of getting pinned under a piece of heavy equipment, I worked under heavy machines, sometimes cribbed up overhead enabling a repair process, under a 40 -50 k machine is freaky especially if I wasn’t involved in the cribbing process, some I refused to go under because it was a sketchy set up, always a little unnerving for me. Nice job cleaning up the storage bins, looked great, thanks for the video, enjoyed watching.
im an old caver too. I live 30 min from Howe Caverns. Ive been to the real original entrance. Not the elevator ent. The entire area is awesome geology etc.
@@ScoutCrafter Have you everr been inside Lester's stone house? The real entrance is still there! The quarry in the back blasted away 1/4 mile of the cave but the ends of the cave are still open.
I was going through a haunted house back in my 30s and the part where they have a hallway that starts getting smaller made me realize I have a bit of a tight space claustrophobia.
I lived in Alaska. We had grizzly bears in our subdivision. I have bear-aranoia I think all the bears are out to get me. When I was in my early 20’s I was afraid of heights. I worked building locks and dams. One was 98 ft water to water. As long as I could start low and work up I did ok. These days I don’t care for crowds. I have driven an hour, looked at a crowded parking lot, turned around and drove home. Also in past few years I have become uncomfortable when I leave my home.
I have some of those organizers but the broken plastic drawers get me. I usually get them in a lot on an auction and the contents are never organized. I have a fear of tight places especially underground. I have gone into caves and mines out west but nothing tight and it has to be solid rock. Not found of anything crawling on me but I don't like rats. It's why I am not fond of houses with crawl spaces. Growing up on a farm with corncribs they were everywhere and I was attacked by one. It couldn't get through my leather boot before my dog got it. Heights don't bother me as I use to climb alll the time.
@@ScoutCrafter All I see from England is when they hunt them with air rifles. I lived in one spot that had been empty for a long time. In the evening the rats crossing the barnyard were like waves of water. We tried shooting them but couldn't stem the flow. Then my sisters picked up three stray female cats that quickly had large litters. They were barnyard cats, soon the rat population dried up. I saw one really large rat near Rock Island Illinois when the Mississippi flooded. It was as big as a beaver. Between grain elevators, garbage and even pet food in people's yards I guees there was plenty of food. I had just watched the movie The Food of the Gods at the drive in which didn't help. Look up the trailer on here.
Rats! High disgust sensitivity I suppose. Just finished watching west Highland workshop restoration of the compressor sprayer part2. You were right, it was very good.
Needles is my phobia since childhood I am 32 now! I started watching you John around 2015 when my first daughter was born, She is turning 9 soon I have another daughter and a son now too! The show only got better! Love the pictures and jokes you use! The Attic is awesome, could you so a good long part or full story of your Great grandfather who built your house and the other identical houses? What year? Did he sell them ? Was it for family? What did he do as a job? Was it one of those unusual mail order houses they did in the early 1900s?
My Great Grandfather really was an amazing man. I will show more about him, he built his own home when he was 21 and lived there his entire life. The home is still in my town. =D
i once saw a tiny pink naked "man" about 12 inches high, it stood up in the grass and ran from me on a ww2 airfield.did not see its face had a small domed head
Yeah, I hit my formative years in the pharmaceutical 70s. I saw a lot of things I don't see anymore myself.
I didn't think I had a phobia until I saw the guy stuck in the cave!
It did bring it home a little didn't it?
MAN O MAN.
Just that photo makes me anxious! 🫣

Fear of social security running out before I retire!

I didn't like looking at the cave photos much less imagine myself ever doing that! Those tight places underground are scary.

Airports gives me anxiety I don’t know why the flying doesn’t bother me at all.
I like both shiny and sometimes bluing.
nice set of pliers!
😄👍👍
😃👍
That new valve you showed appears to be an air valve for a train. For the airline running the length of freight and passenger cars. As I a MTA employee I am sure may have encountered a few. As a conductor/engineer I turned 100s of those a day for 17 years.
We called them angle cocks on the railroad I worked on.
Chris- I was in the Bus department we never had these! Thanks!!!
What great stuff. Always interesting
Hey señor Juan, I guess of the most feared situation is to live the rest of our lives alone.
John!
Lol Vic, I get the foot / leg shake as well.
The liar.
Fear of heights here. A two or max three storey building is okay, but more than that whoooow.🐸
@@SpringRubber Neat trivia! I take a look at their web site. Thanks much! 😀
I had a floor fall on me and trap me while i was in a crawl space. When it comes to small tight spaces it is a big " Aw Hell NO!!!!"
I'm a with ya on the caving claustrophobia John !
My fear is claustrophobia. Anyone that goes into a tight cave has something wrong with them. lol I can't stand it if someone holds me down, not that many can but.....
Bark-uh-low. Also brought us the BarcaLounger recliner. -Doozer
I remember when Jaws came out EVERYONE was apprehensive about swimming. 😃👍
Hey, John, just watched the whole story on John Jones, what a sad event. An absolute nightmare for all involved.
I’m definitely not hood either heights. I love those pliers, and excellent bins in the PMF
Well i didn’t have a phobia. Thanks for giving me one…
😂😂😂
I am not good with needles but I couldn't even watch those pictures you put up of guys climbing through those tight caves. FYI the blueing looks good on those pliers.
Hey Scout , Scary movies give me the Willies … 😂 The Willie’s . People saying that always made me laugh .
If you get the chance check out the movie the day to earth stood still 1951 . It’s free on RUclips and Tubi. Great old aliens landing on earth. Just a great movie .
Yes! I’ve seen it a few times! 😃👍
“Journey to the center of the Earth” remember watching that as a kid on the “4:30 Movie” on channel 7 in NYC😃
I'm not afraid of heights, I'm afraid of falling! Caving is awesome. Should probably say WAS awesome. You need to watch the movie "The Descent".
Yep, I'd agree with you on this one, being upside-down, not a good way to go!
I believe the valve you showed today is called an angle cock.
It is used on the ends of railroad cars to open or close the air brake line when the cars are coupled/ uncompleted. Brake line hose goes on the angled end.
Never give up!
Lobsters 🦞. Creepy buggers!!
My fear is SNAKES!!!! GREAT job on the pliers, I like the polished!
Hi John, nice valve! 👍
I fear a painful death,thxs for sharing...hi Pipes
Same exact fear!
I am not good with heights or confined spaces. I remember that guy that got trapped. That illustration scared the hell out of me.
Was that the movie with the creatures in it?
Or a different one, I remember it being a great horror flick!
(If that’s your thing)
@@mumfordalien1794 No creatures it was about the guy who got stuck and died in the cave
@@mumfordalien1794 That one is "The Descent"
I have a similar storage cabinet that I found in a bank maintenance room before they tore the building down
An adventure is something you return from and having explored many caves in WV becoming wedged in a tight passage where I would have needed a cave rescue team wasn’t something I wanted to experience.
Poor guy.
Speaking of fears and phobias, check out the movie "Arachnophobia" with Jeff Daniels and Harley Jane Kozak. It's a fun rental.
That was a good movie!
I’m with you on the Claustrophobia in tight space’s don’t like going in lifts, sleep best in the open ( in a tent) thanks for a great video.
Scoutcrafter,
I would say being caught in a fire and being severely burned.
Howe Caverns are really amazing. It’s been a popular attraction since Lester Howe found it on his farm in 1842!
Scared to death of spiders!
Infants is my phobia.
I'm not afraid of heights. I'm not even afraid of falling. It is the sudden stop when I hit the ground that gives me some pause though.
I’m the same way about crowds- Don’t care for them EXCEPT tractor or steam, tool or engine shows! The more the merrier! I swear the best people ever!
Slight case of Claustrophobia. I was trapped in elevator at a young age.
Philip- It’s funny, Rats are supposed to make great pets! In England they have many beautiful colors! 😃👍
Pete- Dave did a fantastic job on that entire project!!! You’re right it came out marvelous! 😃👍
