Platinum is usually not magnetic, but it can be depending on the alloy. Platinum is paramagnetic, which means it's weakly attracted to magnetic fields but doesn't retain magnetism when the field is removed. However, if platinum is mixed with a magnetic metal, like cobalt, it can be attracted by a strong magnet. For example, cobalt-platinum permanent magnets are some of the most powerful permanent magnetic materials available.
I had a case once where a jeweler had some special diamond stolen from her house. Apparently it was unique and took a specialist to determine exactly what it was. It was valued around 30k. The pest control guy stole it then sold to a pawn shop. Pawn shop sold it thinking it was fake for like 100.00. It was never recovered. I just cannot remember what it was called or what it was that required a gemologist to verify the authenticity. I just remember the victim saying it would not easily be verified by your average jewel person looking at it.
Wow, I just saw your follow up video telling us that woman had stolen the silver and jewelry that she pawned with you. Not good. But it still shows your an honest pawnbroker.

Iron, Nickel and Cobalt are magnetic. The scan revealed the ring was 4.2% cobalt (Co) which is probably why it stuck to the magnet. With the iron (Fe) and Nickel (Ni) also present the total magnetic material was around 4.5%.
Most jewelry (including rings sold as “platinum”) are actually a platinum alloy. What i mean by this is that there is platinum plus another material, such as cobalt, gold, and iridium, among others. Also keep in mind that the original platinum (before mixing in another material) may not be “pure” platinum. Instead, it may be a form of platinum with traces (small or even large) of other metals. Paramagnetism is a form of magnetism where the material is weakly attracted to an external magnetic field. If your ring is attracted to a magnet, you can conclude that the ring is not purely platinum, and contains some other material that is magnetic. Most jewelry (including rings sold as “platinum”) are actually a platinum alloy. That said, in most cases additional materials are added to the platinum used in jewelry and other manufactured items not to scam you, but to improve the end product.
I wish I saw this the day it happened bc I can tell you why it is sticking. The small iron content is in the bracketing of the diamond. Some jewelers prefer to use iron-based solder for brackets bc it is so much more pliable than platinum, especially a high content platinum like the one you have. It doesn’t necessarily make the jewelers who do use iron bracketing less “skilled”, but typically when you have those pieces, the piece is either extremely old or if within 25 years, made by someone with limited craftsmanship.
The alloy of Platinum contains "Cobalt" when they add Cobalt to Platinum this year ill be anle to stick to a magnet. As a jewelers alloy the Cobalt makes melting and casting platinum easier, it keeps the platinum more fluid for avoiding defective castings. Metallurgy is amazing

Best Pawn Shop show on RUclips
she was so excited. Good job paying her a fair price and not being like ok you need a $100 and to fill up your tank. Some places would have paid her just the $100 and tank of gas and possibly less.
Sucks she stole it and now he's out $1,050. Hate that the nice guy always loses.
It's great to see honest pawn shop
Someone is definitely missing their special platinum ring 💍
And dont know it yet?
Oh boy!! Better call the Feds for giving her more than she asked for. Keep doing good!!!
You need to buy and sell to the right price to make business, but cred to you for not cheating an old lady for her money.
She was so excited how cool!
Drug money is hard to find, she stole those items, that’s not cool at all.
It's nice that Methany could stop by
😂
May you forever be blessed for being such an honest man!
Please post a follow up video where you share that you learned the first sellers items were all stolen from a trusted friend who was helping her out.
Thats freaking funny!!He's shady too..he gave her $1,000 for over $2,400 worth of metals...he probably could care less if it's all stolen as long as he's making his money!
@@StevenG222, the ring alone is appraised for 18k
She needs to be taken care of by the judicial system! ASAP!
All they will do is make her pay money . The judicial system cares only about lining its own pockets. I was in jail once and a kite/letter come through the walls and the county jails ledger was on the back of the letter . The ledger said the jail had made 5,000,000 dollars in just a three or six month period. Meanwhile rapist and domestic violence offenders are getting or'd out while people with a joint of marijuana have to await trial. The system is broken
Oh tend your own garden honey, don't be calling for judgements on others.
@idahogreen2885 Shut up i d I o t. She stole the items from her "friend". Rockhead indeed.
@@idahogreen2885, no she sold stolen stuff. Watch the new video
What a good dude ! That's what builds trust and respect and that's important in a industry like this!!!!!
Her next stops. $25 unleaded gas, 24 pack busch light,$50 electric bill..the rest on a few rocks(dealers choice)😅
Naaa that $50 went to her cell phone! 😂 other than that, ur prob spot on!
Love seeing one's day made. I hope she spends it well.
Holy moly ! That's all my wife and I have to say about that woman lol
Fucked up lol
😂
Have to say what? Let’s hear it say it out loud. You and your wife must be some amazing people. Shit is so annoying when people judge someone. Holy
Moly? Beat it you loser. Stop being a 🤡.
I appreciate the honesty and integrity of this man. Thank you for sharing this video.
That's so awesome that you're honest not alot of places or people are anymore
Platinum is usually not magnetic, but it can be depending on the alloy. Platinum is paramagnetic, which means it's weakly attracted to magnetic fields but doesn't retain magnetism when the field is removed. However, if platinum is mixed with a magnetic metal, like cobalt, it can be attracted by a strong magnet. For example, cobalt-platinum permanent magnets are some of the most powerful permanent magnetic materials available.
One good source of sterling silver is Goodwill stores.
It costs like 50 cents a piece, but sells for a lot more!
Watching this a second time now knowing it was actually stolen 😂😂😂 it was so obvious when she said 'im thinking about keeping this one'
Thanks for your honesty.
Honesty? You don't buy clearly stolen goods if you are honest.
“I’m gonna buy my something” . That’s why she’s in whatever situation she’s in. She should put it in her bank and have it for a rainy day.
Thank goodness for being honest with this lady. She’s obviously not well educated. You made her month lol. Most people would of taken advantage of her
its so nice to see people that are honest
I had a case once where a jeweler had some special diamond stolen from her house. Apparently it was unique and took a specialist to determine exactly what it was. It was valued around 30k. The pest control guy stole it then sold to a pawn shop. Pawn shop sold it thinking it was fake for like 100.00. It was never recovered. I just cannot remember what it was called or what it was that required a gemologist to verify the authenticity. I just remember the victim saying it would not easily be verified by your average jewel person looking at it.
Fun fact, Reed and Barton is from my hometown of Taunton, MA
I apricate you being honest with her
He is a good man for being honest.. unlike that old lady who stole those valuable items for more drugs.
good man on the old woman-what she does with the money-???-you're solid for being honest.
i love the energy of this lady
Wow, I just saw your follow up video telling us that woman had stolen the silver and jewelry that she pawned with you. Not good. But it still shows your an honest pawnbroker.
HONEST!!! She got $1,000 for $2,400 worth of metals..Still took advantage of her ignorance...SHE MADE HIS DAY!
she didn't get anything for that diamond, just the platinum...
A few months ago i went with a friend to look at a fender tele (japan) made ......he saw my Rolex sub its a rare one with red lettering it worth 11k to 12k even in todays depressed Rolex market in a shitty pawn shop......he said 3250.00 i started laughing and told him i would not sell it to him for 20k .....he looked at me,,,,,i told him one i dont need the money.....number 2 you dont know what the real value of it is.....stick with lawn mowers and weed wackers....
A pawn shop is a business, not charity
@@adminpymes598 and morals are just made up ideas, why would we even consider them 🤷♂️
The ring alone appraised for 18,000
Iron, Nickel and Cobalt are magnetic. The scan revealed the ring was 4.2% cobalt (Co) which is probably why it stuck to the magnet. With the iron (Fe) and Nickel (Ni) also present the total magnetic material was around 4.5%.
You're a good honest man! God bless you!!! 🙏
An honest human. Amazing
I like your friend that came in and assessed the piece.
Wanted $50 gave $1,000 I though this was a BigDawsTV prank when I saw the thumbnail. Nice job!
This is a guy who gone win fa his honesty he will prosper
Chick fil a voucher please? Great job! Fairly treated that woman.
The old Dear with the silver etc..mad as a box of Fogs..but happy to see her get much more $$$ s than she bargained for..
Very useful with the box, just cut it and make it fit. I learned something new.
we still have honest people It’s rare, but they’re out there. Thank you,
Platinum + Ruthenium and Platinum + Cobalt alloys, which are often used for cast jewelry are slightly magnetic to strong magnets
First time I have seen a pawn broker be homest, which is nice; but he just encouraged this lady to hit whatever spot she hit before again.
$300 for the sterling is honest? Take another look.
As in a pawn broker saying anything other than I can give you $20 for this rolls Royce and that's breaking my neck is them being honest.
It did my heart good to see him with that transaction I was in that business and gun shop and bail bond offices for yrs in 70s and 80s
'See ya honey I'll bring ya some more stuff' 🤣
