One thing that's not as clear as in the manga - Bellemere could have easily lied/made some excuse. She chose to tell Arlong she had two children not because she was afraid, but because she wanted more than anything to have a family, and it pained her too much to say that Nami and Nojiko weren't her children, so much so that she would rather die. This refusal to tell a lie, even unto death, is a trait inherited by Nami, and which is significant in the most recent arc when (SPOILERS) Nami refuses to say that Luffy will not become the Pirate King.
I do like the show is fully aware of where the series is going and is changing itself to make it more relevant to the characters’ full arc, not just how Oda was steering it at the time
For those who wonder, it's clear that whatever excuse she would have used wouldn't have been accepted by Arlong. He clearly would have checked and killed Nami and Nojiko had he discovered the lie
idk this version aint bad ether. She wasn't going to give a chance for arlong to talk she was going to blow his brains out the second he came in. If his reflex was slower he would be dead.

Honestly... the most heart- wrenching scene in the East Blue saga was done pretty well. Bellemere's sacrifice was spot- on, and the girls who played Nami and Nojiko did a wonderful job. They actually portray two different ways a child would react to a parent getting murdered in front of them. The girl who played Nami is crying throughout this scene, and begging Bellemere not to sacrifice herself, while the girl who played Nojiko stays silent most of the time, but you can tell from her expression she's terrified. That's some good acting from child actors. Not to mention, both girls are so adorable!
Given that there are limitations to what live action can and can not do I think they handled this scene very well. Yes, the animé was more heart wrenching but it wouldn't be artistic license if they did this entire scene verbatim.
Say what you want about how this scene is handled here vs the original, at least Arlong isn’t pointing at Belle-Mere and telling her she’s about to spend the rest of her life in a dungeon
The 4Kids dub only did one half-decent thing and that was the opening rap theme. Prior to Ennies Lobby, killing off Bellemere and Nami's horrible backstory reigned as THE most traumatizing moment in One Piece. Here, they delivered it and Emily Ruth portrayed Nami's internal suffering and loss so, so well. "He let me stop wearing them when I was twelve. Said it was a birthday gift." That, was worse than Nime pinned to a desk by Arlong and the bloody pen.
I actually have a theory that since the first few episodes had some really brutal scenes (Zoro cutting the guy in half, Luffy vomiting the poison, Merry’s death, etc) that Netflix made them tone down the later episodes. (But seriously, they couldn’t at least have blood splatter on Nami and Nojiko here? They were right behind Bellemere when Arlong shot her)
Because they dont need to show it. Its clear what happened, she was shot. But in not showing it leaves it up to the audience to enterpit how brutal the gunshot was
Kudos to the actress who played Belle-mere (Genna Galloway), who made the most of the limited screen time she had but def made an impression and set a head strong example for young Nami to follow.
This is the only part of LA that I’m quite disappointed in. Bellemere’s death feels less impactful, Genzo’s role is less significant, the villagers and Nojiko don’t know about her sacrifice, and Luffy and Zorro end up knowing her past. It makes Nami’s tattoo less meaningful.

Or that the Live action was trying to showcase that Arlong was STILL quicker than her. But it ended up looking a bit off.

I know this is off topic but How come we can keep nojiko’s hair color in this adaptation despite the race change but we couldn’t do the same for ariel in the live action little mermaid? UPDATE: people that are responding to this comment seem to be getting the details mixed up so let me rephrase this I’m not upset that nojiko in the live action one piece has a different skin color than in the anime I’m upset that in the live action one piece we can have a black character with an obscure color of hair but we can’t have that in the live action little mermaid with that in the original 1989 movie ariel was depicted a redhead! Ergo live action nojiko kept her blue hair like in the source material despite the race change but live action ariel didn’t have red hair like in the OG movie despite the race change! Did Disney really think having a red haired black woman would be weird?
lol, even if there's no race change. There is no human with natural blue hair color. Actually, i like it more that everyone in this live action keep their hair color from the original. Still got that one piece character feels to it.
In the little mermaid live action she still kept the color the same but I’m not Ganna lie they should have did braids and blue hair for namis sister because that hair ain’t it 💀
I love the netflix version of One Piece they did a hell of a job adapting the anime... except for Bellemere! WTF happened here?! First of all why does she look like 50?? Bellemere was just 30! And what did they do with her character?! They turned her into an ordinary normal woman she was absolutely bad ass and cocky in the anime... i might be biased here because Bellemere is one of my alltime favorite anime mothers but still... could have they made her anymore worse?! I don't think so... what a shame 😞 since episode one i was so excited for Namis childhood story and Bellemere but they absolutely fd that up 😭 But still the series is amazing and i can't wait for Season 2 😅
Okay and? I'm 29 and look far older as stated by everyone around me. Plus she was a marine that lived through fights and war, do you know how much that takes a toll on you?
Man the Netflix really likes to talk to us like we’re idiots, I don’t wanna be the guy who hates on something just for no reason but this is so annoying how they have to explain every little detail and stretch it out what’s already being conveyed
Eh, pretty weak compared to the manga. A. Bellemere actually got the drop on Arlong proving she is badass yet also showing how Arlong is still more dangerous B. The rest of the Village was there to try and help and saw Bellemere get executed C. Bellemere flat out tells Arlong the money is strictly for Nami and Nojiko showing she cares not just about them but also the thought of being their mother more than her own life.
A and B are pretty irrelevant points, they made different choices that worked in different ways but in the end it works, the scene remains really well executed; you just seem too unaware of what "adaptation" means and why is not a good idea to literally reproduce 1:1 a freaking anime into live action. Point C is completely bollocks and an insult to human intelligence.
This is so bad. Just put her in the dungeon for the rest of her life that would be better. No genzo trying to say he was coming over for dinner to show him protecting them. No Bellmere going out the door with the gun or being beat up trying to fight them. No her stopping them from walking away to tell them she has two daughters. Just follow the anime. This is the arc that turned one piece into a top anime and THIS is what they do
No, you don't "follow" the fucking anime because is a goddamn adaptation, what works in the anime has zero guarantee to work in a live action. If you want the anime you watch the fucking anime, goddamn.
i know nojiko have darker skin, but seeing her black here, kinda off for me and now i wonder if they make alabasta adaptation, what robin gonna look like...
Why are you scared ? 🙄 Robin nationality’s supposed to be Russian even if she´s tan. They would never change it for the straw hats crew like they respected every mugiwaras’ ethnicities for the five first members because it’s already diverse. Also if they managed to do Marine Ford, you would see Hancock being played by a Chinese actress and so her sisters because Oda already claimed her ethnicity so don’t be surprised. If he didn’t precise a characther ethnicity then we shouldn’t care about race bending.
Tell me you weren't paying attention without telling me you weren't paying attention, also, the manga did the same thing so are you gonna criticize the manga too? Oh and another thing, there were 3 plates, even if she didn't lie he wouldn't have believed her, he would've most likely tore through the house to find them

I feel like bellemere should of been more sad happy but not like she was a badass and that kinda less impacted the death of her
The danger is way different here. I feel like I'm watching a cartel movie.
Damn, not even Davy Jones from POTC was this cruel 😮
If the mother has Speech 100, she should’ve said I will have a reunion with friends or meeting with business partners.
That sort of happened in the anime. Genzo and the doctor went in saying they planned to have a meal together.
But then, where could the two children go? It's death for them to sail the seas alone at their age.
A couple of days in the dungeon ought to teach you a lesson
arlong is that nigga and i love it, no mercy 😈😈
Why is Nojiko not crying
traumatic
The actor is a Child actor, Granting lower IQ than an adult 😔
Nojiko is older than Nami.
when u are going through trauma u can't show any expressions
Cause she's black in this show
This scene Is very sad 😢😭😭❤️❤️
Damn im actually on the vurge of tears...
2:01
This was aight, but doesn't have the same impact as the anime/manga
of course if you expections are way too high from the start and you've already experience this in a different format which is manga/anime. people who are new to one piece might feel the impact stronger
Bro dont compare the original and the live action, live action is for the new audience that doesnt know anything about one piece,
@@steelshoot5284 NO. It's for everyone. And those with critical thinking can understand and the difference between both and understand the strengths of each. The anime didn't have Zeff eating his foot but this does but does not the diminish the anime and nor should it.
thats honestly how i feel with most of the live action stuff. that being said its a pretty decent adaptation and has potential if the budget gets higher, more time is given to arcs (and they fix those weird camera angles...)
@@eddiek8179Tbh the eating leg part was also in the manga.
Oh My God! this part got killed me thousands of times
Dweeb in the comment section talking about why Nojiko is black. Lucky Roux and Gin is black as well nobody said shit about it
I don't care if the actress was black yellow brown blue orange purple etc, stick to the fucking source material its not that difficult. They ended up changing nami's backstory for the sake of "inclusion" fucking ridiculous, and I myself as a black man am sick and tired of inclusion fucking every live action over.
@@matics28 nothing inclusion seriously where tf is the inclusion
Just say that you got guests coming over
They had high budget and 8 eps so some things had to be cut
How would like to spend the rest of your life locked in a dungeon
I think my problem with this show is how most of the side character that doesnt have a lot of screen time kinda has a bad casting
Blue hair abuelita , purple hair , pink hair , my mate Tuco is in love with this , he would have say its tight tight tight
And so, after knocking out Bellemere, Arlong took her to a dungeon for the rest of her days.
Bell-Mere😭😭😭😭😭
Nami is so cute
If you can’t pay the cash then you’re out with the trash- 4Kids
In the little mermaid live action she still kept the color the same but I’m not Ganna lie they should have did braids and blue hair for namis sister because that hair ain’t it 💀
Netflix adaptational liberties. The only thing this liberty prooves is that it is more on the nose that Nojiko is not Nami's Biollogical sister, but
who cares bro it’s an anime
@@danielan962 that’s not the point
I love the netflix version of One Piece they did a hell of a job adapting the anime... except for Bellemere! WTF happened here?! First of all why does she look like 50?? Bellemere was just 30! And what did they do with her character?! They turned her into an ordinary normal woman she was absolutely bad ass and cocky in the anime... i might be biased here because Bellemere is one of my alltime favorite anime mothers but still... could have they made her anymore worse?! I don't think so... what a shame 😞 since episode one i was so excited for Namis childhood story and Bellemere but they absolutely fd that up 😭
But still the series is amazing and i can't wait for Season 2 😅
she looks 30 to me
How does she look 50?
@@prinzdenax seriously? I never saw a 30 year old with so many wrinkles... btw i'm 32 so i'm taking that personal😤
Okay and? I'm 29 and look far older as stated by everyone around me.
Plus she was a marine that lived through fights and war, do you know how much that takes a toll on you?
@@suudowoodo fr, people forget this is a LIVE action *adaptation* and small changes will be made for the sake of detail and realism.
Man the Netflix really likes to talk to us like we’re idiots, I don’t wanna be the guy who hates on something just for no reason but this is so annoying how they have to explain every little detail and stretch it out what’s already being conveyed
Nojiko full Haki 😂😂😂
Pillaron a una actriz negra con peluca azul del chino de la esquina. Solo pido que Barbablanca lo interprete un africano. Por favor 🙏
Mother gets shot:
Nami: 😭
Black kid is like 🗿
Eh, pretty weak compared to the manga.
A. Bellemere actually got the drop on Arlong proving she is badass yet also showing how Arlong is still more dangerous
B. The rest of the Village was there to try and help and saw Bellemere get executed
She isn't nami's mother
wait... so in the live action, Arlong didn't take her to the dungeon?
Are you kidding?
If you can't pay the cash your out with the trash
Its bellamere and its not namis real mom
Yeah the pacing definitely rush here lol
Why is namis sister black?
The anime version is way sad
This, hit, sooo much harder then in the anime.
😬 suuuure
Nojiko looks different from the anime
How
This is so bad.
If you want the anime you watch the fucking anime, goddamn.
trash opinion. It works because its well written. This doesnt work cause it was written poorly@@deceiver157
i know nojiko have darker skin, but seeing her black here, kinda off for me
and now i wonder if they make alabasta adaptation, what robin gonna look like...
@@ne_kovan4166I disagree, it's not just because he didn't say that it's subject to any change
@@gabrielrr8045yeah, Nojiko, Makino, Koushiro, young Zoro, and young Kuina was not played by japanese even tho they have an obvious japanese name
I dont think they'll do that to Robin. She's part of the main characters. Maybe only Ussop and possibly Brook are the African descent characters.
She was never white if we can agree that I’m ok with what you said
The anime version mush better then this version
Belle mère ...
She couldn’t say she has guest?
Speech level 10
you think he'll believe her? he'll flip the whole house.
… yes
She could of just lied lmao
she didn't lie in the manga cuz she considers them her daughters
Arlong would have killed her children then.
You missed the entire point. She is acknowledging those children as her daughters.
Tell me you weren't paying attention without telling me you weren't paying attention, also, the manga did the same thing so are you gonna criticize the manga too? Oh and another thing, there were 3 plates, even if she didn't lie he wouldn't have believed her, he would've most likely tore through the house to find them
No. In the manga and anime they make it clear there was no way for the children to escape the island even if Bellemere did lie and say she had no children.
Nojiko is mah nigga
No ❤❤❤😢
