5 people shot at Kent street race at problem intersection, police say

- Five people were shot at a street race in Kent early Sunday morning, according to the Renton Police Department who also responded to the scene.
While investigating a collision at around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, a patrol sergeant heard gunfire coming from the direction of West Valley Highway and South 180th Street. The intersection was full of hundreds of street racers and spectators, according to police.
When Renton officers arrived to help, they discovered five people had been shot and injured on the Kent side of the intersection. The victims are all receiving treatment at local hospitals.

These have been going on for well over 20 years. It goes a lot deeper than just a bunch of people street racing. If you actually go to one of these events and look around you’ll see a lot more going on than just cars racing and doing donuts

I'm 66 ... As a teenager. .we " cruised ". Slowly. So we could be admired.
There was a large parking lot where we stopped and popped our hoods. People walked to and fro admiring the engines.
All slow and I remember no problems.This was the early 70's.

Colby in Everett, Herfy's Burger, Edmonds, Carkeek Park, Golden Gardens, XXX in Auburn. Stay away from Brier cops lol .... People raced, drank and drove (Gallon of beer to go for a buck at most bars), crashed, Snorted lots of Coke, did Heroin, smoked pot... All this was part of 60s and 70s car culture it was just fairly rare. MOST people just cruised, hung out.

My grandpa was going to these races back in the sixties I started going to these races in the early early 2000s around 2004 to be exact
Up until about 2019 the way we did things and ran the races was much different it was much more organized we would purposely go to close down streets in the warehouse TO STAY AWAY FROM ENDANGERING THE PUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are ruining the car community!!! We would purposely do things in deserted streets so that the only people that are getting endangered are the people who are racing and if people are going to spend tires they'd at least do it behind a warehouse off of the main road

If the street racing time and location is as predictable as the news story claims, why aren’t the police stationed at this intersection at the time in question, to prevent these problems from starting? Seems like preventing crime doesn’t get any easier.

Defund the police and they don't seem to have incentives to enforce the laws. Over worked and less police exist since covid rules of Jan or job they all went into new careers or left the state for new jobs .

I live near 167 and these freaks are driving up and down probably over 100 mph easily, and they make the cars sound as loud as possible. Louder than the jets landing at boeing field overhead.

Jail them all drivers and spectators for 5 years each time they come and street race and are caught then take their cars the first time around and a $5000 fine and jail time for drivers and spectators .

The loophole for car seizures is leased cars. Since the cars aren't owned by the perps, they can't be seized. But, at the very least, their driver's licenses should be suspended or revoked, and if there is another violation, the driver will face an additional charge.
