Porsche Boxster S 981...You Can Have This

  • This 2013 Porsche Boxster S 981 review will cover a car which is the affordable exotic for most people. The Porsche Boxster and Cayman duo have long utilized a mid engine design and for the 981 generation, Porsche used an extensive amount of aluminum making this the affordable exotic in the pre owned market. Porsche CPO programs are also pretty decent so a lower mileage example from a Porsche dealer might be one of the best used sports car purchases however, there is certainly competition at this price range both used and new.

    As you say, these cars are not all about speed, but I don't think you could call them slow! They are unique in the way the naturally aspirated flat 6 boxer engine delivers the power up the Rev range. I have owned mine for 2 years (used 2013 S model) and I am still blown away by the feeling and sound as the engine builds to the wonderful crescendo! Also, as a mid-engined car, the balance through a series of bends on a narrow twisty road (of which we have loads in the UK) is exceptional. I'm sure manual is more connected but the PDK is a fabulous responsive gearbox, which always knows what gear you want next and adapts to your driving style on any particular day. You can buy a good spec used model in the UK for £25K, which isn't cheap, but a lot of beautifully engineered sports car for the money! Mine has the standard exhaust which sounds great, with a good deep sound at low revs building to a raspy scream at 6,500rpm, but the PSE is even better. Aftermarket exhausts rarely sound as a Porsche should. I would recommend all day long😀👍

      Thank you so much for stopping by my friend always a pleasure to hear from an owner. I absolutely agree with your points this is absolutely not slow and it is a true pleasure to wring out. Transmission is def telepathic does an amazing job that PDK and balance is perfect. Yea that stupid exhaust on this car ruined it I believe you that the stock Porsche exhaust is perfect. Glad you are enjoying that beautiful car it truly is in exotic territory in terms of quality and curb appeal. Thank you again for watching

      I agree with Mark Eaderly, I have owned a Cayman base for 2 years, its not that fast but speed is not the intent here, its the driving experience. In my opinion, unless you are on the German autobahn, anything above 350-400 bhp is basically useless. Porches have the 3 Ps that no other manufacturer has, Power, Poise, and Precision!

    Great review. I have a 2013 Boxster S in Amaranth Red with a manual transmission, X73 suspension, full leather, Porsche Sport Exhaust and 20” Carrera wheels. Just purchased it last month off of Craig’s List of all places just up the road from where I live, couldn’t believe it. Love the car! Sold my 987.1 Cayman for it and I have to say, I much prefer the 981. More refined ride, better brakes and the PSE is awesome. It’s not my DD so I had to have a manual transmission-and I would have it no other way, just awesome! Feel much more connected to the car than I do in my wife’s Macan S with PDK. And best part of all the car has very similar lines to my favorite Porsche of all time-the Carrera GT. Best car I’ve ever owned.

    +1. An excellent 981 Boxster S review. .. Original MY98 Carrera C2S (993) owner coupled with a used 1-owner MY13 981 Boxster S e.g., PDK, PASM, S. Crono, PTV & S. Exhaust is the chassis build. .. A great driving used Boxster S. The PDK is uber competent making the manual gearbox play second fiddle. .. An ECU software tune ala the base 3.4l of the Carrera noticeably enhances the 981's useable torque. .. Its hp/tq specs of 340hp/296tq w/software enhancement. Cheers, M/S

    You have the sounds of someone letdown by high expectations ha. That exhaust drone was pretty horrible, but can be expected from an aftermarket setup. I am amazed to hear about all the rattles. I would expect there to be rattles from the exhaust, but from door panels and interior bits, that sounds a bit rough. I've learned straight line speed I don't need anything faster than 4.0-4.5 0-60 (although that's not slow), and enjoy the handling and look more these days.

    • @MeynMotorGroup
      @MeynMotorGroup  4 года назад +1

      Yea I think most of all this was a terrible example. Porsches are very hard to get my hands on of course but when I get them they seem to be bottom barrel ones. Lol yea I did have a bit of a high expectation but I kinda knew this would be a chassis over engine car and that's fine and it does handle great. There is a lot to appreciate here especially CPO this will also break necks all day. Cayman will be more solid tho

    Never thought Id be in the market for a Porsche but now I am. Id be upgrading from my 350z Roadster manual which I love. Thanks for the review. Prices at the moment are still stupid hoping they'll go down soon as Id like a 2013-2016 Boxster S manual. @Kevin what would be a reasonable price right now and would you wait?

    • @MeynMotorGroup

      Congrats my friend, you would probably be looking at $45k-$65k depending on mileage and market for this particular car right now.
      I know you really want a Porsche but idk the used market still sucks and I would personally lean towards buying something new with Factory warranty.
      I think the new 2023 Toyota GR86 Premium really captures that Porsche feel for around $33K and I also really like the Camaro LT1 & SS models for around $40-$50k that’s probably what I would go for in today’s market.

      I’ll tell you what else a comment like that says: it says “I’ve never driven a Boxster or Cayman”. Thing is, before I purchased my 981 Boxster S , my budget afforded me the opportunity to buy a Boxster OR a 911 of the same vintage. Why did I choose the Boxster? Because it was livelier, had flatter handling, was more nimble and lighter than the 911. I’ve driven many 911s, and the newer Boxsters/Caymans are what 911s USED to be: fun, light, awesome handling cars. Newer 911s are now basically GT cars. Great if that’s what you want, but I was looking for an actual sports car, NOT a heavy GT cruiser. Mic drop?? Yeah-ok.
