      Good advice for relatively new pilots, scared of strong bumpy thermals: just turn tighter instead of running away. Less likely to be stumbling in to the bumpy edges of the thermal, less likely to loose the thermal, and more G loaded wing will be more stable and feel more comfortable.

    hi greg, what do you think about starting with UFO or skin 3 paraglider ? there is 3 school in france they say " advantages
    -very easy to set up ,
    -highly cushioned behavior very high flight safety, -
    -more fun, faster!
    disadvantages
    -Monosurfaces hover a little less well than a conventional wing, especially in turbulent air or in wind. But since a beginner should not fly if there is wind or turbulence, this disadvantage is less significant ,
    -According to some opinions, the landing is less soft than with a conventional wing. I would say yes, if we use the same technique but no, if we use the appropriate technique, "
    what is your opinion thx by advance

    3 seconds is too soon to start your turn in a thermal as you will just drop out the back. You need to go past the core to keep your entire circle in the center. Six seems to work best on my Delta 2. Mapping thermals is fun.

    • @FlyWithGreg
      @FlyWithGreg  2 года назад

      that's luxury, Mike! you can do that in wide thermals, but most of the time, especially in dry climates, sunny places, or early in the day, you need to turn sooner so you don't go out the front of the core, which then gives you an unresponsive wide turn in heavy sink. most wings have a delay to the initial turn, so 3 seconds will give you 4 seconds of travel, then your first quarter turn, and so on for 16 seconds for a beginner turn. Most of my thermalling is around 12 seconds for a 360, so 3 seconds puts me right at the core .. if not, widening up is simple to do, and much easier than finding the thermal again after a too-wide-circle.

    Good tips, concisely presented.
    Regarding tight turns in thermals. May I suggest that SOME thermals are wide and weak. A steep turn would give up climb rate in these. More accurately it would be : "use a bank that keeps you climbing at the highest rate" which is sometimes shallow. But be willing to go steep when the tightness of a core demands it."
    Of course this head knowledge must turn into skill developed through application.

    • @FlyWithGreg
      @FlyWithGreg  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Jeff, and a good point! I'll make a much more detailed thermaling video which will go into optimising climb rates, but if I was to give ONE piece of advice for progressing pilots trying to thermal better, it's turn tight. I seldom see pilots turning so tight they are sinking out, although it is technically possible.

    • @FlyWithGreg
      @FlyWithGreg  3 года назад

      effective landing setup. so this means, not putting yourself into a position where your only option is to overshoot, because you have set yourself up to fly into a narrowing funnel of obstacles. When flying out to the landing zone, analyse the approach patterns you can use, and find one that gives you a simple approach path that has 'break out' options or plan B alternatives, and doesn't rely on a perfect glide path ... expect a lot of variation in the ground wash layer!

    One other thing, I can't wait till when the weather improves so I can get some practice these ground handling techniques, e.g. the strong wind take off techniques that Greg has mentioned in his previous video. This is certainly been one of my biggest weaknesses with flying, and I have always shied away from strong wind takeoffs but now I just can't wait to go and practice.
    One big one has to be, as Greg has explained, the need to run under the and toward the wing as you pull up. I have been flying since 1996 and no one ever explained this to me! So just a simple thing, and it's so simple but so effective!
    I wish you had done these videos 15 years earlier Greg, but it's never too late. From low airtime to highly experienced pilots, in fact anyone who is serious about flying should undoubtedly sign up to 'Fly with Greg' (website). Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to go to the next level and beyond. As Greg says I am also very excited about where this is going and I want to be part of it from the beginning.

      Thanks John, it's really cool having your support. I've now got the time to analyse flying deeply to create relevant training videos.

    Please, explain what to do in turbulence. Now it's spring here and it's turbulent. My harness is shaking sometimes :-)

    Hi Greg, another great video, thanks...
    observation: launch phase - (imho) I see too many pilots looking up in to their wing, back bowed... doing this, you have absolutely no balance, no control over direction, footing or ability to react

    1:03 Yes, this is a bad habit that's easy to acquire and maintain on many sites, for example the Alps where launch sites typically have little to nil wind. OTOH in California it's quite common to have a strong wind on launch and you learn very quickly to forget the brakes as you'd be just blown backwards otherwise. I found out just sticking to the classic A/C method works very well even in very weak winds anyway.
