It will be very interresting to see back the Nordiques in Quebec. But we must know that since Gary Bettman entered the NHL from the NBA ... the Nordiques were gone by 1995 & Winnipeg by 1996. Winnipeg came back in 2011 from Atlanta. Before that Quebec & Winnipeg went to the Usa ... The Coliseum & the Winnipeg Arena were pretty a crowded house at each games thus and Bettman does not want to bring back the Nordiques in the NHL, whatsoever, even that Quebec has built the new building for 400 Millions. Quebec is a hockey city as for Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Speaking of Montreal & Toronto ... when Vancouver first offered to get in the NHL in 1967, both cities were against the idea and in 1970 they still were. When Quebec gets in 1979 ... Montreal were against and still are today. I would say for the Montreal Fans that their team only missed the playoffs once in 1995 while Quebec were in the NHL (the fact of having a rivalry motivates the teams on the ice). Since Quebec left for Colorado ... Montreal have missed regularly the playoffs since. Finally, by having a team in Las Vegas ... it won't help, whatsoever, the cap salaries in the NHL ... Bettman & the Board of Governers are ruling the game unfortunately ...
If the Coyotes move to Quebec, that means the defending champions Tampa Bay Lightning would have to be forced to move to the Western Conference, which isn't a bad idea. Miami and Tampa teams are in different conferences, and while I'd welcome a FLA-TB rivalry, hockey is need in QUE and it makes more sense to move the Coyotes to QUE.
Quebec didn't drop out of trying to get a team. They were deferred. And now they're being threatened to have Seattle get the next team before them. Frankly, they don't need to purchase an expansion franchise. There are plenty of struggling franchises already that need to be rectified. How long can the league continually justify having the Coyotes in Phoenix when they've never turned one single profit, and they don't draw decent attendance, even when they're winning? That's the definition of a money pit. The NHL must be scared to try to make more money. Any legit business man would tell you they wouldn't invest in a market that hasn't turned a profit after a couple years, never mind over two decades. And a team wouldn't be taken away again if Quebec got a team. They have a modern building where the team can make money. Management just has to follow the blueprint set by Winnipeg. You know you'll make money in Quebec. You're not making money in Sunrise, Arizona or Carolina. And it's the successful teams that are having to continually prop-up these money-pit franchises.
Its 1.28 and not 1.36 now on the USD/CAD exchange. It's advanced trend will most likely keep going lower and this higher price is a short-term fluctuation. Expect it to go lower than 10% in the next 2 years or so.
as someone who doesn't make much, I hope to myself that I would not be a part of the problem if I was an NHL'er, but it's hard to say unless you've walked a mile in their shoes. it would be nice if one of these years, players on a team decided to take pay cuts in order to keep the group together (example- when teams win a cup, and then suddenly all want tons more money, the team can't afford them anymore, so they are split up and sent away) in order to win more cups. but the goal of making it more affordable to your fans would be amazing too. I agree that salary cap should take a break from going up for a little while
I'm a Bruins fan and a lot of rich people live in Massachusetts and I look at the prices for the Games and for the nosebleeds it's over 100 American dollars and no matter, what the TD garden is a packed house every signal night so it really sucks and the Bruins have no reason to lower them because they don't care who goes or even if they come as long as they sell the seat.

Off topic but I hate that the NHL has a hard cap. I would LOVE it if the NHL adopted the NBA's cap system. There's a salary cap but teams can go over it they just have to pay a luxury tax that is divided among the teams below the cap. It's the fairest salary cap system imo. Oh, and don't give me this bs about it favouring big markets. For the past few years Cleveland has had the highest payroll in the NBA. Hardly a large market.
The best thing that Quebec could do is to not think about expansion fee of 650 million but instead try to figure out how to pry the Panthers as its value estimated is only 186 million.
But part of that is Bettman and his Board of Governors have to wake up and realize that it's not worth keeping teams like Arizona and the Panthers afloat when they're not drawing fans, and not making any money. Florida was in the playoff push, and they still could hardly draw to their games. The league has to ask themselves is that really growing the game?
One thing that you didn't mention is the corporate sponsorship thing that the professional teams are milking. They have those block seating with those sweets. Who's going to sponsor when your business is balancing on almost closing down if they do place that tariff. It's a weird time for business right now.

Quebec City is the ultimate place for a franchise. It may be a bit small, but the people truly cared about ice hockey and have great support. How can the Canadian dollar sink amazingly and have the Nordiques and Jets move South to the States? Colorado is good, but how did Phoenix get a franchise? 2 words: population growth. They have Winnipeg back and Quebec is the true place to have a team with a new arena being built. I would not think the Nordiques moniker is necessary, other names like Remparts, Blizzard, Flowers and my favorite Bulldogs are great names as well. The possible expansion effort might be at least 2019 with other cities like Kansas City, Seattle, Madison (Wisconsin) and few others would be a proposed 32nd team. Other option is relocation with teams from Florida, Carolina, Arizona and Anaheim (West Coast) struggling to draw fans, they would have to approve the league to move to that place. Only time will tell.
as someone who lives in the new york nj ct metro area all the whale are remembered for are their badass unis. Its a fine ahl town and most ct fans were Ranger fans to begin with.
Im sorry but 125$ (possible more depending on how worse the Canadian dollar may get), for A ticket??.... not happening, not even an urge to buy. Wow.... now my perspective has changed some much about the NHL. Feel bad for the Nordiques, JUST WISH they could come back, but like you very well explained this is a very difficult issue cause it has to do with the money.
This is a sensitive question but here goes. I love QC and have a blast whenever I go there (I am a Minnesotan not a Canadian so I don't go as often as I would like to). The history, the blended nature of the city (both architecturally and culturally speaking), the beautiful nature and a damn good plate of poutine make it an awesome place to visit for an Anglophone here in North America. Not to mention the marathon is a damn good one! But would such an exotically different market attract quality players? Of course the Francophone Canadians would have no issues culturally there, but would Finns, Swedes, Americans or Russians want to play there? Quebec is not like Montreal, which is a mixed city. It is bascially monolingual and French Canadians are very protective of their culture (which I understand). Not to mention the monolingual nature of the area cause certain marketing concerns? Would Anglophone Canadians support or watch the team in any meaningful way (there is most certainly serious underlying tension between Quebec and the ROC although separation no longer appears to be a real concern)? I bet they would attract some support from the New England region of the US (especially Vermont, Maine and NH) and possibly Wisconsin and MN (Wisconsin lacks and team and the MN Wild are a joke of a franchise in just about every way possible and are not endearing themselves to your average MN even though they operate in a hockey crazed region). But this is all speculation on my part. I for one would love to see a team back in QC. In the meantime for any Canucks reading this hockey keeps getting bigger and bigger here in the States so the future looks bright as a whole for the NHL! When I was growing up in the 90s if you had ever told me Blackhawk tickets or Stars tickets would go for as much as Chicago Bulls or Dallas Cowboy tickets I would have laughed! But here we are!
Money is surely a big issue but the biggest one, IMO, is that the NHL need a landing spot for all these struggling markets just in case and, for now, Quebec City is the only one...
Yea it’s amazing how much tickets are. Never gonna go down only up it sucks. Me and my wife are die hard flyer fans and we went to just two regular game the stadium series they were a Christmas present and one pre season game. They are just way to much
Jacques Parizeau said: (I'm paraphrasing here) 'We're so goddamn poor, look at me, I firing nurses left and right. You want a new arena for your silly Nordiques? You must be joking''. In the same time frame, he also said this: (Still paraphrasing) 'We're rich enough to become our own country'. We all know how that worked out, right? Canada still lives, thanks to its greatest unsung hero (however unintentional he may have been): Jacques Parizeau, the man who saved Canada, but killed the Nordiques. True story, ask anyone willing enough to fact-check it.
The NHL is interested in big markets, tv deals etc etc. They would have to be down to putting a team in Idaho before they would consider Quebec. It's sad, it's wrong but it's true.
Last night, Tempe residents unanimously rejected the city’s proposed $2.1 billion Entertainment District that would’ve included a 16,000-seat NHL-ready arena. Does this mean the Arizona Coyotes are ready to relocate to Quebec City next season?
That's the problem with the NHL. The fact that the average fans can't or wont be able to afford tickets with rising the cap is not into the NHL consciousness. They are about making profit and now what they are counting on to fill the arenas seats is with corporations, selling boxes to companies.
I don't get this thing about increasing the cap. Some people say it allows a team to get better players. But doesn't that also help inflate salaries? I don't know exactly how salaries work, but I'd expect that caps help keep salaries manageable. If you get a player for half of the salary cap, then the rest of your team is going to be bad. And aren't the best players also interesting in playing in competitive teams? And maybe the teams don't want to pay that much for a single player, and so he'll lower his demands. But if you increase the cap, then some players could be like "now you can afford to pay me more, else I go elsewhere". I don't know, I don't think increasing the cap helps the teams at all. If anything, considering how ridiculously well paid the players are, and how expensive are ticket prices, the cap should go down.
Are you also figuring corporate tax rates into your equations? I do feel from an economics stand point you have an over simplification here. Also I am not a favor of tariffs at all but when a country puts tariffs on incoming good (ie. Canada tariff on US dairy production) you run the risk of that country tariffing your goods as well.
+Vidars84 The US is not as vulnerable to Canadian tarrifs. In terms of Canadian sports, corporations get tax breaks in US cities that they don't in Canada. The US will always have a large advantage on Canada on many levels. At least when the dollar was at par, hockey was equally viable on both sides of the border. That's not the case now, so other factors become more important too.
I Would be so Grateful to see the Quebec Nordiques Be Brought Back. It would be Nice to see the Canadian Cities get More Teams in Canada and it is High Time that we did get More Teams in Canada. It is High Time that we Had Hamilton Brought Back into the NHL Circle and its Also High Time that the NHL Got Rid of the American NHL Teams and the NHL Is very Badly Managed and its time that the NHL Started to Bring Back More Canadian Teams into the NHL And where we can have Both More Western and Eastern Canadian Cities with a Team in its Place and it would be Better for Our Economy. Lets Bring Back Victoria and Lets Bring Other Teams into other Canadian Cities Like Regina Saskatoon Brandon Hamilton Halifax Sydney and Many More to Mention those Cities and that will be More then Good. More Teams in those Cities it would be More then Good For the Economy and it would be good for the Federal Provincial and Municipal Economy Pictures and the More we have More Canadian NHL Franchises in the NHL The More We Lower the Unemployment Picture. David W Glavin Burnaby BC
Other than QUE, the only other Canadian markets I can see the NHL expanding to are Halifax and Saskatoon. I don't foresee Hamilton getting one due to the proximity to Toronto and even Buffalo, and both of those franchises won't allow it due to territory rights so Hamilton is the odd man out despite Hamilton being a major Canadian city.
Nailed it. This is a economic crisis not just hitting hockey fans. Families are struggling to feed their families who dont even care for hockey (yes blasphemy). Society in general needs revamped.
I'm not sure why the strength of the Canadian dollar is particularly important, unless its just a way to say that Canada is experiencing more economic difficulties than the United States
I knew how rowdy us Minnesotans got when Norm Green finger fucked us and ran away with the North Stars (Stars) to Dallas, I can't imagine how my fellow Nordiques fans are feeling, I'd bring the Nordiques back for the sake of the game and for the fans. Plus have them and the Canadiens shake up their feathers once more (Bataille de québec). RAMENEZ LES NORDIQUES!
Quebec City is questionable. It has a population of about 570,000. It has 13 corporate headquarters but it is located in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps Colorado can play some of their home games in the New Centre Vidéotron wearing Nordique sweaters. Maybe even the odd playoff game.
Sounds like a plan but in reality, not a chance. This is the"Bettman Era",expansion is south of the 49th and any Canadian teams having problems better get their ducks in a line.Phoenix on the other hand has the backing of the league, because expansion is the whole of the USA.IF,they do eventually move,it won't be Quebec,it will be Houston. They are trying to sell the game to people who are not yet fans.True, passionate hockey fans will watch and get behind a team reguardless.(The strike,Junior hockey was the winner).
Is it just me or are NHL players more worried about how many million dollars THEY ARE GOING TO LOSE. Than they are donating some of the other millions of dollars they will still get paid?
Hey Hockey Guy, Somethings has to give someday !!! If Canadian teams continue to collect revenue from the same Canadian fan base and continue to pay their players in US Dollars then that team will not survive any much longer if they become better Stanley Cup contenders. If you look at the Canadian based teams in the NHL outside of Montreal and Toronto, they won't survive too much longer if the disparity between Canadian teams and American teams become so great, thus creating an unfair advantage towards the US based teams. You wonder why their hasn't been a Canadian based team winning the coveted Stanley Cup since 1993??? Hmmm????
Simple. The CAD is too low, that's why... I can see the 32nd team being in Seattle and once the CAD is worth more, either Carolina, Arizona or Florida will relocate to Québec. The other two teams will probably relocate to Hartford and Saskatoon/Portland ideally. Then, we will have 32 teams that are well located finally.
You can't do that because there is already a sports team using name Halifax Hurricanes. Plus there is other problems like the Metro Centre max capacity being under 11,000 or that there isn't enough people living there
Honestly I believe Saskatchewan (Regina or Saskatoon) could have an NHL team. Seeing the support and love for the Rush and the Riders (who admittedly suck), I could see huge support for an NHL team.
@@EveryoneIsAnIdiotExceptForMe Agree. The old Jets should have not have went to Arizona. Same with Quebec. Colorado deserves a team but the Nordiques should have not have left in the first place
The Coyotes are fine in Arizona. Once the sale to the new owner is confirmed this week, that'll seal the deal and keep them where they are for the forseeable future. And just for curuosity's sake, I'd be interested to know why you think KC would be any more suitable a market than Arizona?
My neighbors are both janitors for the school board they have two kids both of them into sports that cost money to play they save for their kids education and they own their home well the bank owns the house they subsidize the Edmonton Oilers a team they cannot afford to go see it's a joke a billionaire taking money from people just making it its just wrong
Remote geographically. Small market. Another team in the East (come on!). Civil service town - like Ottawa (that couldn't even sell out for the playoffs).
They wouldn't expand to the east because of the uneven amount of teams in the west. The nhl is always trying to make as much money as possible. A team in Seattle would make sense considering the population.
So, I guess move Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg and Ottawa to Seattle, Kansas City, Hartford and Cleveland and keep Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal the only Canadian teams that can afford to keep a franchise. #FireGaryBettman
Cameron Waycaster lets hope they don’t go anywhere but if the city refuses to build a building in the next 10 years I wouldn’t expect a team in Calgary unfortunately. It’s just how bettman rolls
Noah Mantle well if they get rid of the Hurricanes for exchange for Whalers and get rid of the Dallas Stars for the North Stars and then get rid of the Wild for the nordiques I think I just like old hockey even tho I'm a Ducks Fan but then again I became a Ducks Fan when the movies came out

If I were a professional hockey player and made many millions of dollars I would occasionally buy a batch of tickets that weren't being sold and give them a away to the fans.
NHL teams and players often have a batch of tickets available for sick kids and the like. It is one of my favorite things that pro sports does.
Why?
They do and they give them to kids or handicapped people and so on. They don't give them to random people who may or may not deserve them, which is fair. But an average NHL game shouldn't cost the price of football (soccer..) world cup games, ridiculous.

We tried so hard to sell hockey to Americans that, we succeed and succeed so much that we will loose it forever!
as someone who doesn't make much, I hope to myself that I would not be a part of the problem if I was an NHL'er, but it's hard to say unless you've walked a mile in their shoes. it would be nice if one of these years, players on a team decided to take pay cuts in order to keep the group together (example- when teams win a cup, and then suddenly all want tons more money, the team can't afford them anymore, so they are split up and sent away) in order to win more cups. but the goal of making it more affordable to your fans would be amazing too.
It would work! It would even out the league!
Pacific: LAK, ANA, VGK, VNC, SJS, CGY, ARI, EDM - 8 teams
Central: CHI, NSH, MIN, DET, STL, WPG, COL, DAL - 8 teams
Atlantic: MTL, FLA, TBL, OTT, TOR, BOS, BUF, QBC - 8 teams
Metro: WSH, NYR, NYI, PIT, PHI, CBJ, CAR, NJD - 8 teams!
Please NHL, do this!
I didn't see Seattle in that list
Add a little to this list and it will work. Need to add teams:
Pacific: LAK, ANA, VGK, VNC, SJS, ARI, CGY, EDM, SLC, SEA, OAK, SAN, POR, SFF, VIC - 15 teams
Central: CHI, MIN, STL, WPG, DAL, KCS, HOU, MIL, INI, SAS, COL, NSH, OKC, SAR, OMH - 15 teams

Go big or go home I say! :-)
Hardly a large market.
great stuff
The best thing that Quebec could do is to not think about expansion fee of 650 million but instead try to figure out how to pry the Panthers as its value estimated is only 186 million.
But part of that is Bettman and his Board of Governors have to wake up and realize that it's not worth keeping teams like Arizona and the Panthers afloat when they're not drawing fans, and not making any money. Florida was in the playoff push, and they still could hardly draw to their games. The league has to ask themselves is that really growing the game?
Shannon, that's also a sign that you live in southern British Columbia
Sackville Baginnz i thought he lived in Southern Ontario?
He IS a Canucks Fan of Vancouver B.C
Teams get their own stadiums built? Always thought an arena was built/paid for by a company or the city and leased to teams that play there.
One thing that you didn't mention is the corporate sponsorship thing that the professional teams are milking. They have those block seating with those sweets. Who's going to sponsor when your business is balancing on almost closing down if they do place that tariff. It's a weird time for business right now.
True.

John Prieto the whalers should be back to
anahiem isn't struggling kek
as someone who lives in the new york nj ct metro area all the whale are remembered for are their badass unis. Its a fine ahl town and most ct fans were Ranger fans to begin with.
Anaheim is one of the most consistent teams in the league...
Back in the day a few players refused to go to Quebec because of the language.
We Need NHL In Houston & Quebec
I say bring back 2 more teams at least bring back a team to Quebec preferably the Quebec nordiques and the Hartford Whalers that would be cool
Yes!!!!!
Question? Is not nhl hockey money coming from commercial, seats are just bonus.
Real talk
The NHL is interested in big markets, tv deals etc etc. They would have to be down to putting a team in Idaho before they would consider Quebec. It's sad, it's wrong but it's true.
Last night, Tempe residents unanimously rejected the city’s proposed $2.1 billion Entertainment District that would’ve included a 16,000-seat NHL-ready arena. Does this mean the Arizona Coyotes are ready to relocate to Quebec City next season?
You look great in this video
Great points... I would say that Hartford deserves a reboot way more than Quebec but the same numbers come into play.
i like your vids
Sad situation & it will not get any better ether.
I Would be so Grateful to see the Quebec Nordiques Be Brought Back. It would be Nice to see the Canadian Cities get More
Teams in Canada and it is High Time that we did get More Teams in Canada. It is High Time that we Had Hamilton Brought
Back into the NHL Circle and its Also High Time that the NHL Got Rid of the American NHL Teams and the NHL Is very Badly
Managed and its time that the NHL Started to Bring Back More Canadian Teams into the NHL And where we can have Both
More Western and Eastern Canadian Cities with a Team in its Place and it would be Better for Our Economy. Lets Bring Back
Victoria and Lets Bring Other Teams into other Canadian Cities Like Regina Saskatoon Brandon Hamilton Halifax Sydney and
Many More to Mention those Cities and that will be More then Good. More Teams in those Cities it would be More then Good
For the Economy and it would be good for the Federal Provincial and Municipal Economy Pictures and the More we have More
Canadian NHL Franchises in the NHL The More We Lower the Unemployment Picture.

It could work
I'm not sure why the strength of the Canadian dollar is particularly important, unless its just a way to say that Canada is experiencing more economic difficulties than the United States
It's a big reason teams were leaving Canada in the 90s.
The price tag is a cool $750 million US to get a new franchise. In Quebec City...not going to happen.
Gary bettman. That's why.
Hmmm????
How do the other Canadian do it???
The will be coming back
Can the Hartford whalers comeback?
Bring back the North Stars
Already have the Stars so that wouldn't really work.
nordiques
Why does this have 3 likes
There is no problema what so ever all we fans have to do to see the cap drop is STOP going to the games!
How about Huston
I thought you had blonde hair? You had dark hair in 2017?
where do you work?
Trois-Rivières should get a team even tho there's only around 140 000 person in the city
Quebec did not drop out they were defered by the nhl watch garry bettman say it
Yes! Bring them back so they can kick Montreal's ass!
I wish Quebec had a team. I grew up in central Maine and my father's side is Acadian, so if Nordiques came back it would be great.
Unpopular opinion but in a world where CAD is close to USD, I'd rather a team in Quebec than Columbus.
Why Canada has their own dollar, for fucks sake just the Dollar the North America currency already
Oh pourqoui???MON Nordiques!!!They stole them!!!And then they win a cup-Mais NNNNNNNOOOOOOONNNNNNN!!!
Move Carolina to Quebec. No one goes to their games.
Canada has ENOUGH teams!!! Why not bring back the Atlanta Thrashers???
Atlanta was/is not a hockey city lol
@@EveryoneIsAnIdiotExceptForMe Agree. The old Jets should have not have went to Arizona. Same with Quebec. Colorado deserves a team but the Nordiques should have not have left in the first place
@@InfiniteHorizons Same with the Hurricanes they should stayed in Hartford too
Arizona: Kansas City. Florida: Quebec City. Simple.
Couldn't agree more, possibly Arizona to Houston because we all know how much the NHL likes to try to the south.
The Coyotes are fine in Arizona. Once the sale to the new owner is confirmed this week, that'll seal the deal and keep them where they are for the forseeable future.
And just for curuosity's sake, I'd be interested to know why you think KC would be any more suitable a market than Arizona?
Craig Hamil nhl suitable arena, two very large outdoor teams and no indoor teams
Move Carolina to Quebec City.
Move Florida to Quebec
Remote geographically. Small market. Another team in the East (come on!). Civil service town - like Ottawa (that couldn't even sell out for the playoffs).
Northern Maine would have a new team, see ya Boston.
Aren’t the Nordiques the Avalanche now
Yes, they relocated to Colorado in 1995 and the Avalanche won the cup the next year
@@InfiniteHorizons ik
@@DGO111 LOL
How bout vancouver down to seattle? Or maybe the panthers to seattle?
WA state always seemed to me like it should have a hockey team
They wouldn't expand to the east because of the uneven amount of teams in the west. The nhl is always trying to make as much money as possible. A team in Seattle would make sense considering the population.
So, I guess move Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg and Ottawa to Seattle, Kansas City, Hartford and Cleveland and keep Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal the only Canadian teams that can afford to keep a franchise. #FireGaryBettman
Brody Hinz Why is it Bettmans fault?
exactly Ottawa couldnt even sell out ECF games last year. PATHETIC!
Zach Carlstrom even Arizona sells out their playoff games
Cameron Waycaster lets hope they don’t go anywhere but if the city refuses to build a building in the next 10 years I wouldn’t expect a team in Calgary unfortunately. It’s just how bettman rolls
Zach Carlstrom cant see Ottawa around for much longer !
What’s your real job?
This is my job.
@@TheHockeyGuy full-time? i remember watching one of your older videos from 2017 and you said you had just come back from work... Maybe its a bit old

bring back the Hartford Whalers and The Minnesota North Stars get rid of the Carolina Hurricanes and The Dallas Stars
PANTERA CFH \m/ XXX so. . . you want 2 teams in Minnesota?
Noah Mantle no get rid of the Minnesota Wild and replace the wild with the North Stars
PANTERA CFH \m/ XXX You mentioned getting rid of the Hurricanes and the Dallas Stars. Nothing about the Wild.
Noah Mantle well if they get rid of the Hurricanes for exchange for Whalers and get rid of the Dallas Stars for the North Stars and then get rid of the Wild for the nordiques I think I just like old hockey even tho I'm a Ducks Fan but then again I became a Ducks Fan when the movies came out
David Esparza This is True No Lying here I love Minneapolis District 5 Mighty Ducks
