  • The St. Elisabeth Foundation of the Archdiocese of Vienna is an ecclesiastical foundation with a public corporation based in Vienna, which was founded in 2010. It was created from the church institutions "RAT und HILFE" and "Diocesan Aid Fund for Pregnant Women in Emergency Situations".
The St. Elisabeth Foundation of the Archdiocese of Vienna supports pregnant women, homeless single mothers with their children and families in difficult life situations. The Foundation's services are covered by several areas:
    Consulting
The family, legal and pregnancy counselling centre advises women who are in a crisis situation before or after giving birth. Among other things, you will receive
    Information on social law entitlements
Education about optimal medical care and infant care
    Information about affordable housing
Support in case of family difficulties or custody disputes
    Psychotherapy is also offered. [1]
    Housing
The needy women are supported on their way to independence with their own living space. Be it in one of the four mother-and-child houses or in a starting apartment. The target group of the facilities are women and their children who are affected by homelessness and need professional support in order to regain their independent lifestyle. [2]
    Labour
The aim is to improve the opportunities for women in hopeless situations on the Austrian labour market. Within the framework of labour integration, the vocational and educational situation is improved. For example, through German courses, information about the labour market or further training opportunities. Both in the web and creative workshop and in Mama's workshop, skills relevant to the labour market are taught and strengthened. Personal responsibility, adherence to a structured daily routine and gaining work experience are part of this. [3][4]
    Donations in kind
The foundation has its own warehouse for donations in kind. Every woman who is cared for by the foundation is allowed to choose suitable things for herself and her children free of charge. [5]
    Funding
The foundation's offers of help are financed by the Archdiocese of Vienna, the collection of the parishes of the Archdiocese of Vienna in the form of the annual Mother's Day collection[6], private donors, sponsors, the Vienna Social Fund as well as the Federal Social Welfare Office and the Federal Chancellery. [7]
    Donation Seal of Approval
Donations to the St. Elisabeth Foundation are tax deductible. Since June 2011, the foundation has held the Austrian Donation Seal of Approval. [8]
    History of the Foundation
On April 11, 1956, the "Association of Friends of the Work Council and Help of Catholic Action" was founded by the Catholic Action of the Archdiocese of Vienna. The main tasks at that time were career counselling and job placement, especially for disabled or elderly people who were difficult to place. The association's headquarters and training center were located at Breitenfeldergasse 8, 1080 Vienna. The chairman was Dr. Richard Weinbrenner.
After a temporary restriction of the association's activities in the 1960s due to the improvement of the situation on the labor market, the RAT und HILFE association was reactivated in the 1970s by the Secretary General of Catholic Action, Adalbert Stich. In April 1973, the Diocesan Aid Fund for Pregnant Women in Emergency Situations was founded and with it the establishment of a separate diocesan counseling center for this target group.
At the beginning of 1975, the RAT und HILFE association was faced with new tasks due to the entry into force of the time limit regulation: comprehensive care, advice, support and social security for pregnant women in emergency situations. Another concern of the association was the creation of so-called "protected jobs" for people with disabilities and the social security of members of the order.
On September 27, 1977, 21/2 houses in Arbeitergasse were donated to the association RAT und HILFE by the "Maria Elisabeth Association for Voluntary Care of the Poor"[9], in which a home for pregnant women and mothers with their children in need was built.
Together with the association "Save Life - Action Life", the association RAT und HILFE rented the attic of the Neumargareten parsonage in Flurschützstraße in October 1979 and set up another mother-and-child house.
In 1981, the missing share in the house at Arbeitergasse 26 was purchased. The operation of the mother-and-child home was supported by funds from the "Brothers in Need" campaign of the Catholic Men's Movement (KMB) of the Archdiocese of Vienna.
In 1983, the sewing and weaving room was set up in the mother-and-child home Arbeitergasse and in 1985 the family counseling center on Stephansplatz.
