    In my opinion Ian Gillan brought a renewed sense of danger to Black Sabbath. The only album by the line-up is not perfect by any means, but by God, does it have menace! It sounds like some insane beast raging in a cage. Ahead of its time, I think. Almost a grunge-y vibe to it.

      The strangest thing is that this particular song is more Gillan-style than Dio... arrangement sucks... He could enter with "CryAAAAAAAAAy out"... with his firm sound... but they made just silly rock'n'roll of this song... they probably had no time.

    The main problem was that he had a serious throat surgery before joining Sabbath. He was told by the doctors not to sing at least one year because the voice needed to rest, otherwise he could damage his vocal cords forever... But he didn't care and four months after the surgery he joined Sabbath and started singing songs that weren't composed for his voice and with his still non-recovered vocal cords it was a fatal decision....

    I was at this show, but I don't remember Ian's voice sounding so strained. I just remember see him play the conga drums during this song with his hair flying all around and Bev Bevan on drums. The crowd didn't know what to make of this show, but I liked it and I was glad I went. They played "Supernaut" & "Rock n' Roll Doctor" too which is more in Ian's ballpark. The opening band "Heaven" was good too. A weird show, but good! Stonehenge!!!!

    Surely I'm not the only one here that has read Tony's autobiography IronMan where he mentions that Ian had just had nodes removed from his vocal folds before joining Sabbath. He was told by the doctors that he had to take at least a year off to truly rehab but went back a mere four months after surgery. That is the real reason why he didn't sound very good. I saw the born again when they came out here & luckily, he sounded okay. It must've been an early show on the leg of the tour.

      Stephen, nice to hear from someone who was actually there. I still have the review from the Reading Festival that was featured in Kerrang magazine that year, which said Sabbath were awful! And from the bootlegs I've gotten over the years, I could pretty much agree. From what I gather, they didn't do any songs from the Dio era, and even worse, broke out Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" (which for some odd reason, people seem now to think was cool and don't realize that a LOT of Sabbath fans were pissed at them for doing that back then).
      But I do like this performance of "Neon Knights"! Cheers!

      I was there too, at Reading in 1983 and didn't find the gig that bad. In fact, I thought Gillan did a wonderful job with the Ozzy era songs. It is true that Sabbath doing Smoke On The Water was a bit of a low that evening. I myself found it silly and I remember Iommi's body language and facial expression suggesting it didn't sit quite well with him either.

I tried to listen to the original songs with Ozzy but I couldn't. He's such a terrible singer compared to Dio. I went right back to Dio and that's all I'll listen to even on the original stuff. No Ozzy for me.

    • @MrLtia1234

      @@JimmyRJump It was apparently Tony's suggestion to do the song. I don't have a problem with it, but then again I wasn't there.
      But yeah, I agree Ian did a great job with the Ozzy songs. Paranoid on a good night in 83 is one of my favourite versions of the song (Worcester!)
      The Dio stuff is much, much harder to sing. Bear in mind, they also didn't play Trashed - possibly the hardest song in the entire Sabbath catalogue. Never performed live by Sabbath, as far as I know. When Ian revived it for a solo album of old songs he moved the key wayyyy down but still didn't do it on the resulting tour!

    GIllan's voice was baked by the end of this tour. I caught them in Toledo towards the end and it was not too good, really. IG actually sounded good on Neon Knights, which they opened with. He calmed it down and almost spoke it, with that hard enunciation he sometimes uses at the end of a verse. They followed with Hot Line and it was rough. He did well on certain tunes. Tunes like Rock And Roll Doctor and a couple of others, but for the most part, he was pretty hoarse. They were also exceedingly loud, almost painful and ended blowing a circuit in the sound system and everything came to a screeching halt, with IG coming out and tapping on the mic until they got things back on track. Gillan was good, as usual, with his between song banter. I certainly don't regret going, but I wish that I would have seen them in the beginning before Gillan blew his voice out. Bad decision to come back before his voice totally healed and the constant screaming did too much damage for him to ever get his voice back in fairly decent shape. Too bad.

    • @MrLtia1234
      @MrLtia1234 Год назад

      @@hazor777 Yeah, it's not like he couldn't sing afterwards, but it was never the same. Perfect Strangers has some difficult to sing songs on it (although not compared to Born Again!) and he soars, but just comparing his vocals early on in the Sabbath tour with even the best (early on) in the PS tour, it's kind of sad. Child In Time would never be the same. To be fair, he's already done some damage before that - took the 'rock and roll' thing a bit too literally and never bothered to look after it. But before and after the Born Again tour was when it was never the same again.
      He did recover up to a point in the late 90s, but we're not talking Born Again studio levels. He was just mostly singing well, but was older.
      Also, why the chose to open the show with this instead of Children Of The Grave is a mystery. That song was pretty cool with Gillan, whereas Neon Knights was never going to sound right even if his voice was healthy.

    as a sabbath fan ill say dio def was made for this song- now i think IAN gillan was great on born again- def tough on him to do this song and few other sabbath tunes- but in fairness he was told to take time off and get his throat treated prior to this tour with sabbath but decided to just go on with the shows. so he wasnt in full capacity. live. plus he was a bit out of his deep purple element but exactly a yr later when he rejoined purple.to make perfect strangers album. he was great sounding and that album was awesome. SABBATH RULE

    @OVERKILLSLAYER95 Gillan joined Deep Purple in 1970 and Dio's band, ELF, opened for them around that time so I think it's hard to say either of them influenced each other, well that and they sing differently

    I was at this show.....and let me say that this is not fair to judge Ian because this was towards the end of the tour and his voice was strained yes it was but that happens to every singer in this genre of course...if you want a better example of this tour i recommend Worcester FM broadcast from a bit earlier in the tour

    One of the most-potential, best-results combos in rock (Sabbath and Gillan). The studio album is great, 'Disturbing the priest and 'trashed' are awesome songs while "Born Again" is a masterpiece. On stage it worked great too...despite some old BS songs were not for Gillan (like this one) he demostrated he could equal or even surpass his predecessors on some others...the only minor point was the drummer imo...

  • @89Fredbear

    Its Gillan he does what he does and at this time he was having a few issues so by the time you got him live hes messing with vocal styles. IF THEY WOULD MIX THE BORN AGAIN ALBUM THEN YOU WOULD SEE WHAT IT SHOULD BE LIKE!!!

    @SnakeRambo Ok true but that was more of a duet rather than Dio being a lead singer for the band. It was kinda a one night stand if you catch my drift.

    When I saw this tour in Toronto, the only Dio song they attempted was Heaven and Hell, and I think Children of the Sea. For very obvious reasons....Love Gillan, but he just couldn't do RJD. Quiet Riot opened, my first Metal concert!

    I loved the Born Again album, and Gillan in Sabbath, ... and my favorite Sabbath lineup is "Geezer and the Three Italians", but it's clear that Gillan didn't really get the Dio material. He was a bit better with the Ozzy era stuff, but that's because the lyrics and melodies were easier to remember than things like "Neon Knights" and "Heaven and Hell".
    I really have to believe Ian's explanation that his biggest problem in Sabbath was that he couldn't get the lyrics to stick in his head. It's a good bet he wasn't listening to Black Sabbath before he got trashed and accidentally joined the band.

  • @blablabloly

    So, maybe you have got a better sounding version of Neon Knights with Gillan?

  • @SilverTounge85

    Interesting to listen to, but not excellent. I think Gillan could have done 'Die Young' or 'Children of the Sea' or something else off 'H&H' better than this. I actually like his rendition of 'Heaven & Hell'. The Worcester gig is excellent, and Ian does a great job on 'Heaven & Hell' there. Personally I would love to have heard 'Voodoo' or 'Country Girl' in favour of this during the 'Born Again' tour. Much more in Gillan's "comfort zone" vocally I think. I think Iommi gave Gillan free access to choose some songs for the tour setlist. I know 'The Wizard' was rehearsed by dropped for some reason, 'Tommorrow's Dream' was rehearsed as well, and rumoured to have been played once, but I doubt it. 'Rock N Roll Doctor' and 'Supernaut' was chosen by Gillan as well.

    Obviously Gillan was the best singer to ever be in Sabbath, they just didn't fit very well together. The Born Again album is fantastic though, despite the horrible mix.

    • @erikleethompson13
      @erikleethompson13 8 лет назад +4

      Gillan is a good singer. The problem is Gillen pushed way too hard on the album and couldn't replicate it consistently on the tours. He butchered lyrics in almost every bootleg out there. Gillan himself said he was the worst singer in Sabbath history. So i truly hope you were being sarcastic by putting the "Obviously" in there. LOL.

      No, I wasn't being sarcastic. He didn't fit with Sabbath, true enough, but as a singer he was the best to ever be in the band. Just not the best FOR this band.

    @OVERKILLSLAYER95 Gillan couldn't have had an influence on Dio, Dio performed starting in 1957 and Gillan started in 1962 but again I think they're both awesome and don't mean that as a knock on Gillan

    Well yeah, Gillan seems to struggle big time on this one. Alas, I guess the same could be said about Dio if he tried to sing "Trashed" or any other song off the "Born Again" album...

    • @lanmetal
      @lanmetal 7 лет назад +1

      Why would you doubt it? Ronnie James Dio was truly a superb vocalist, but a banshee screamer ala Halford or Gillan he certainly was not. So, there would've been no way for him to replicate those high pitched falsettos Gillan pulled off all over the "Born Again" album (or any other album in Gillan's prime, for that matter). Take for example Aerosmith's "Dream On" cover that Dio recorded with Yngwie Malmsteen: during the final part of the song, when Steven Tyler originally yelled "Dream On" time and again, Dio simply chose to avoid those screams. It just wasn't a part of his vast technique.

    • @MrLtia1234
      @MrLtia1234 5 лет назад

      Dio's secret is all about clever breathing - he played Trumpet early in life and he attributed his technique to that. That's how he still sounded astonishing as he got older. when he had Stomach cancer, he just sounded slightly hoarse! Incredible.
      But Trashed doesn't let the singer breathe at all - that's why it's never been performed live - not even by Gillan! Also why he changed the key completely when he rerecorded it.

  • @dplzgb101
    @dplzgb101 12 лет назад +1

    @bracadeira You are comparing Dio to Gillan well past his prime. Love Dio but he could never sing songs like Child in Time, Place in Line and many others....
