Group A era was great. Because cars were long, narrow, and had simple, fully mechanical transmissions, they had to be spectacularly driven to be fast. Then, because those were only A group cars, you could go to a local dealer, and buy any of those cars. You didn't get the rollcage, skidplate, and the limited slip diffs weren't locked so tightly, boost was set a little lower, but otherwise it was exactly the same car that raced, and with a little tampering could be easily turned into one. WRC and current 'Rally' cars are just prototypes, terribly expensive and there is hardly any cools sports cars in the showroom. And certainly not rally type cars with 4WD. Back then you could get Legacy, Galant, Impreza GT, Lancer Evolution, Delta Integrale, Celica 4WD, Escort Cosworth. Also Nissan and Mazda had their turboed 4WD cars. All were basically 4WD rally cars with upholstery And now? There's only WRX that got a bit heavy, and Yaris GR.
Totally agree with you. Maybe the success of the Yaris GR will inspire other manufacturers to produce something similar and perhaps a new rally class will establish itself?
Agree but there was still a fairly large difference between an actual WRC group A car and its road going homologation counterpart. Apart from being totally stripped of any NVH a road car has to use they would use different turbo internals, hoses, intakes, intercoolers, and the suspension would all be completely different parts ie rose jointed with much more expensive dampers / top mounts / uprights and racing bakes. The engine mapping and transmission would also be set up very differently with things like anti lag systems which obviously arn't allowed on a road car.
@@thiscocks Sure there is. But basically, a homologation car for A8 car is relatively 'easily' convertible to an A8 car. In WRC on the other hand, you have to cut away and build again about 40% of the structural elements of the bodyshell, and then nothing has anything in common with the road version. Maybe just the cylinder block...
@@piotrmalewski8178 yes, part of the reason modern WRC is no where near as good as this era and up to the early 00s. Make the manufactures sell them again!
I'm still a WRC fan but times have changed. Sometimes I feel like the passion is gone with all the hybdrid stuff and spectator zones. WRC just doesn't feel the same anymore. Some smaller rally events with historic cars are sometimes even better then WRC events with only 12 Rally1 entries and 6 different stages ran 2 times + 2 mickey mouse stages. Where is the adventure in that?
So true, it is all to sterile and lacks passion. Here in Belgium rally really is a big thing. At the national championship 21 WRC2’s are quite common which shows the popularity of rally. But all spectators come to live when the Porsches, BMW’s old group A and other old rwd and fwd come flying around the corner. Making real engine sounds and bringing a smile on every face.
I was 3 years old at that time and never experienced the group A era. Thank you for bringing me back in time! Fantastic quality, looks as if it was recorded 10 years ago and not 30!
MAKINONESSS en toda regla... con pilotazos en toda regla... ( con cambio manual ) ese tacto piloto makina que tanto gustaba al aficionado disfrutar... Grande que fue la era del grupo A

cigarettes ""555" were only allowed in monaco itself. in france were most of the rally is its forbidden. That's why you see the car on the podium with 555 and on the stages with the bananas

Super film
Ford vs Toyota looks like he understeers a lot. Toyota goes sharp and Ford goes wide with nose. Great drives!!! Thank you for sharing.
Nevertheless, Ford won that rally!
A time when the cars were still authentic and not like today a cage with plastic packaging and an additional battery.
Can we see sedans and coupes in WRC again?
2:58 what’s happening here did he just hit something to have the wheel come off
True rallye,good pilote
Muy bueno..... Y Moyá falando mediu gallegu....carallo
