  • Classic rally action with the very best drivers of the Group A era in action in the 1993 edition of the legendary WRC event Rallye Monte Carlo. It was an event of many debuts with the all-new Ford Escort RS Cosworth and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo I making their first appearance in the World Rally Championship. Also it was the debut event for Carlos Sainz, Juha Kankkunen and Didier Auriol in their new teams. 4 teams, 3 days and one night - and thousands of fanatic spectators. This is Monte at its best.

That night of 24 years ago in that final roud I was there on the Turini and two other PS in the morning. A big Auriol chewed over a minute of disadvantage on Delecur and then won the rally. Occelli said: "For the first time I was so afraid to stand by Didier!" It was a shame for Sainz for the bang, but now Delta was at the end of her career, her development had already been over for two years. Wonderful memory! Creepy!

Juha Kankkunen and Didier Auriol are GrB drivers. Didier drove the R5 Maxi Turbo in 85, Juha the Celica TCT, Timo Salonen took the title in the 205 T16 E2. In 86 Juha took his first title with the 205 T16 E2, Auriol drove the Metro 6R4. So in Group A here it actually was the end of their time. This year (93) was the last title of Juha. Didier took 1994. Sainz started in 87, right after GrB was done, so he missed it by an inch. They were the old guard in 1993, not the next level. The next level started with 1995 title of McRae, then Tommy Mäkkinen had 4 in a raw, Grönholm, Burns and Solberg. Then came the Loeb era till it was done with the 2.0, manufacturers left and VW used the time to make some titles without competition, till Toyota announced their return, Hyundai joined and Ford said they'll increase support for MSport. That's the moment VW used the diesel gate as excuse and left the champion Ogier without a car, such a d*ck move... Well, he got then two titles with Ford and same people race till today. It's kinda funny you didn't know though Juha and Didier were running for some years. Juha since 82, Didier since 84. Quite the most popular phrase about GrB belongs exactly to Juha Kankkunen (WRC is for boys, Group B was for men).

The WRC should have a look at this, and realise what all their sterilisation has done. They were proper cars that looked, acted, and sounded like they were on a mission. The camera work going on here in just those few short moments far out shines anything that the WRC channel has done since it's conception.
Just the sheer volume of people in attendance goes to show how popular such events actually were. Modern rally's are struggling to get enough people to marshal them let get alone spectators. Hardly surprising considering that most spectators viewing areas are usually on a hill top somewhere about 1/2 a K away from the road.

I'm just going to say it- it's idiot spectators like these that have made modern WRC so sanitized and boring. The same reason Group B was banned and we never got to experience Group S, the even more extreme category that was supposed to follow. I can't help getting frustrated when I see spectator control so broken. Maybe saw one marshall in this whole footage. And he was probably treating it like a bullfight too.

Group B also killed quite alot of drivers and co drivers

If I were one of those drivers I’d die of anxiety driving 100+ km/h 10cm next to them. Such dumb people.

@@horkos69 If death is a problem to you then you should not get involved in any dangerous sport. Spectators should just be informed, if they do stupid thing we should keep natural selection doing what has to be done instead of destroying a competition that's appreciated by some people who aren't totally dumb

@Hill For a high skilled driver such acceleration isn't an issue. Nowadays RallyX and Electric cars are doing much better in this area than the Group B one. The craziest thing I've seen was an electric RallyX car, drivers could manage it very well despite the most brutal acceleration you can experience in a car

You would think the group b era had just carried on. The body kits and spoilers were toned down a bit in general but they must have been comparable in the speeds they were doing and the crowds are basically in the road still. Great cars and great sounds.
