That night of 24 years ago in that final roud I was there on the Turini and two other PS in the morning. A big Auriol chewed over a minute of disadvantage on Delecur and then won the rally. Occelli said: "For the first time I was so afraid to stand by Didier!" It was a shame for Sainz for the bang, but now Delta was at the end of her career, her development had already been over for two years. Wonderful memory! Creepy!
Juha Kankkunen and Didier Auriol are GrB drivers. Didier drove the R5 Maxi Turbo in 85, Juha the Celica TCT, Timo Salonen took the title in the 205 T16 E2. In 86 Juha took his first title with the 205 T16 E2, Auriol drove the Metro 6R4. So in Group A here it actually was the end of their time. This year (93) was the last title of Juha. Didier took 1994. Sainz started in 87, right after GrB was done, so he missed it by an inch. They were the old guard in 1993, not the next level. The next level started with 1995 title of McRae, then Tommy Mäkkinen had 4 in a raw, Grönholm, Burns and Solberg. Then came the Loeb era till it was done with the 2.0, manufacturers left and VW used the time to make some titles without competition, till Toyota announced their return, Hyundai joined and Ford said they'll increase support for MSport. That's the moment VW used the diesel gate as excuse and left the champion Ogier without a car, such a d*ck move... Well, he got then two titles with Ford and same people race till today. It's kinda funny you didn't know though Juha and Didier were running for some years. Juha since 82, Didier since 84. Quite the most popular phrase about GrB belongs exactly to Juha Kankkunen (WRC is for boys, Group B was for men).

This is amazing quality. Where did you get the footage from? It's brilliant. The close camera work, including the atmospheric shots are great. It's as good as modern footage.
Broadcast was shot in 4:3 these days. This got modified to 16:9, so there was something removed from both the top and bottom, which makes it look like zoomed in. Nevertheless, amazing footage from probably the best Group A season.
The winner D.Auriol covered 594 km in 6 hours and 13 minutes. That is average speed of 96 km/h. The winner of 2019 S. Ogier covered 323 km in 3 hours and 21 minutes. Average speed 97 km/h. The guys in this old video are going fast! :)
Auriol was absolutely mental on tarmac and Monte Carlo also suited him alot. He won Tour de Corse 6 times. This is in rally world equivalent to Schumacher winning Magny Cours 8 times in F1. So we know Auriol was no slouch. He could take a minute lead off of you in couple of stages. Just ask Carlos Sainz 😉. I still think China 1999 was his best win. For someone who is known as a tarmac specialist to defeat all these champions on hard gravel in interchangeble conditions and that rally was particulary hard on cars that year to the point of Sainz complaining about officials and wanting to quit. Yet Auriol powered through to win without any complaints. That has to stand for something...
