One VERY important thing to note while doing this. After installing the new belt. LEAVE the altenator bolts loose. Run the tensioner bolt in FIRST. The altenator must be able to pivot toward the radiator...as the tensioner bolt it being tightened. If the 14mm altenator bolt and 12mm top bolt are tightened...you will snap the tensioner bolt as the altenator is set in place and cannot tilt back as it needs to. Tesioner bolt FIRST...gets tension on the belt as altenator tilts back. THEN tighten the 14mm pivot bolt...then the top 12mm bolt.
Very good recommendation. Thank You!
Like his doing in the video ???
Thank u for comment! Shud this be same exact procedure for 2011 Toyota corolla sport 1.8 4 cyl vvti?
You mean like he mentioned in the video
Is that not obvious? The alternator can't pivot to tighten the belt if the pivot bolt is not loose.
Thank you, for showing how to do this procedure, in a very clear way. Without extra bla, bla, bla. Great job! Thanks again.
This was a life-saver!! Thanks for the details on socket size, belt path, etc.
Saved me $250 thank you very much for this awesome video!! This is the best out of the rest of the videos I have searched through. Step by step. Thank you !!!!
Did this myself today with this videos help! Saved $300 today! Good day! Dayco or Gates brand belts are top aftermarket. Blessings!
Thanks for posting this procedure. It is so good to see this done before I attempt it.
You are very welcome.
This was such a nice straight forward informative video. Extremely helpful, now I have the confidence to try it myself. Just purchased an 09 corolla s with 79k. Figured I'd at least do the belt and plugs.
+Matthew Hirschman Thanks for watching and I hope your replacement goes well.
great description even included socket sizes and pulley routing. used car for son, pretty old school ,1970's, system which i was not expecting on this car.
thanks
Ok, pretty straightforward. Thanks for posting this procedure...
Thank you, this fills me with confidence on tackling this this weekend
FINALLY someone who is not a tweeker or rambles on about nonsense b4 getting to the point!
Glad you liked the video. I like the comment!
Thank you very much for your tips. Big help. I just changed my 2012 Matrix belt.
Really like the idea about measuring the marking the tension bolt tightness.
very straight forward and to the point i like the way this was presented
This helped my dad and I sooooo much. Thank you!
Well done video. I'm ready to change my belt now!
Thank you for the video. Just replaced mine. Really helpful.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the illustration on the pulleys.
You're welcome.
Great straight forward video...Thank you!!!
Belt will stretch after a few days and possibly squeal. I had to readjust the tension on mine. I just compared the tension of the belt on my camry since it has an automatic tensioner and voila perfect.
Thank you for the information mate been pulling my hair out trying to figure out this in Australia this is on a 2007 Carolla.
You're welcome. I hope this helped you get out from (down) under your problem.
you make great videos. thanks for doing this!
+Sam Sung You're welcome and I appreciate the comment!
So I kinda knew how to do this but forgot a bit, thanks a lot because of you I didn’t need a mechanic lol
Thank you for the vid.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Amazing how helpful this truly is
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Very well done. That’s how a fix should be made.
I just changed it was perfect and easy thanks for the video😀😀😀
You're welcome. Thanks for watching and for the smiley faces!
Your incredible friend. Thank you for posting
You're welcome. I'm happy that you found the video useful.
Thanks, 14 mm but was stuck ! Had to remove the tire and fender well to get that bolt! Mission completed
My 14 mm bolt is stuck too I dont wanna have to do all this😭
@@tcgggggDon't fret. No different than changing a flat. Good practice in the event you have a flat.
I think working from underneath give you more space. Isn't it? I am planning to remove the passenger's tire and under fender plastic cover. I am going to replace water pump too. Also, to have more space, I will remove alternator too.
Very good video thanks so much!!
Great video, thanks.
Thank you for show me how doing this job God bless you
You're awesome thank you so much!!!
You're welcome.
thanks very helpful
You're welcome.
Muchas gracias!!
Thank you, that diagram 👌🤝
I got the old belt off and it was still hard coming off. I tried but was unable to slip the new belt over the alternator. I pushed the alternator all the way forward towards the firewall. I double checked with the parts store and I got the correct size belt. Do you have any suggestions. I have replaced other serpentine belts and didn't have this much frustration. I'm about ready to call a wrecker and have it towed to my local repair shop.
You have the water pump labeled as the idler.
Oops, you're right. Me bad
@@TheOriginalMechanic but thanks for the video! This helped me diagnose a squeaky belt on my wife's corolla. I had it far too tight.
I am so glad you pointed that out cuz I have been losing my mind. No one can seem to find an idler pulley for me. I was about to drive up to the Toyota dealership.
thanks. great help
you're welcome
Thanks. Fyi idler is the water pump.
many thanks
Your awesome!
my is the same 2010 1.8 i got 3 belts too short or too long , I got the 6PK1230 from autozone is bit too long , and I order amazon 6PK1220 looks like same length space as yours. make I need a 6PK1200 or 6PK1210 ,i used the 6PK1230 the spacer hook thing pass the curve wall spacer.
Thanks...great video! Do you really need to disconnect the battery just for changing the belt?
Probably not, but If I error, it's on the side of safety.
yeah...I see.
As long as I had the battery cable off , I would of cleaned the post and cable for better contact
What's the part number for corolla 2017 serpentine belt?
My Corolla squels on start up, is it possible it's just the alternator pulley that needs replacing?
Yeah, that's the most likely cause of a squeal. If it has over 100k, replacement might be wise.
Question, I changed the alternator about 7 months ago. They changed the belt at the same time but the belt slips every now and again. Do you think I need to adjust this bolt on top of the alternator? Should I add or loosen tension?
I would try adding a bit of tension
Great video!! I’m surprised the water pump isn’t driven by it? U sure the timing chain drives that?
The pulley he labeled as the idler is actually the water pump. It looks like an idler pulley.
Thanks bro........A+++++
Thanks for watching it and taking the time to comment!
You're welcome!
@the original mechanic..good video man.. i have a question if i replaced mine but i hear a 2 second squeal every morning..what did i did wrong? is it loose or too tight?
Ir's likely a bit loose so just tighten it a bit.
@theoriginalmechanic..thank you for your time..keep up the good work!!
I am having trouble loosening the 14 mm pivot bolt. I tried loosening the pivot bolt first then the tensioner and that didn’t help. Any advice?
Try a penetrant soak. If that fails I would go to breaker bar and if needed, a cheater. Tapping on it with a hammer sometimes helps dislodge it.
Hi, would this be the same for a 2011 Toyota Corolla?
It should be the same or very similar on the 2011 1.8L.
need to see the 2011 1.8L corolla LE serpentine belt replacement
Can anyone tell me how much to torque for the alternator bolt? It seems that is can go inward "indefinitely".
Don't quote me, but according to the serpentine replacement for this car, the torque for the three bolts are: (12mm belt tensioner and socket) 14 ft-lbs and (14mm bolt) 32 ft-lbs
thank you
You are very welcome.
The belts vary by .5 inches. You can't solely go by original bolt placement.
Simple and consice
I have a 2009 Vibe 1.8. My idler pulley need to be replaced. First, are there any videos on that? Second, I'm having trouble finding an idler pulley.
It's to the right of the crankshaft and just above the AC compressor. I put a drawing in the video but didn't show it very well. Check out 4:32. I don't know where you looked for an idler but I have found success at Rock Auto.com.
It actually turned out to be the water pump. I blew out yesterday. I got the new pump today at autozone. Thanks for the reply
Do you have a measurement of that ?
That you mark on a paper ?
I really appreciate that if you can give me the exact measurement !
No I don't. Just tighten the belt until there is a half inch of deflection at the midpoint.
will this work on 2009 Pontiac Vibe 2wd?
It should. According to some cross referencing I did on Wikipedia, the 2009 Vibe should have the same engine.
+The Original Mechanic oh alright thank you sir
Did you have hard installing the new one?
No it was quite easy.
This one is same design to Corolla LE 2015. 👍
So once i put in the new belt in i tighten the tensioner bolt first on my mark i made and then i tighten the side alternator second and lastly the top alternator bolt?
Yes. Tension bolt (12mm) first, Alternator (14mm) second, and Locking Bolt (12mm) is third.
Is it recommended to change water pump when performing this service, let me know
I don't see why the belt and filter would be paired up for replacement. This isn't like an engine where the timing belt and water pump are done together.
The Original Mechanic thanks so much for timely response, your video is very informative and to the point. While I have you here’s another seemingly stupid question, when removing negative battery terminal, does this clear stored car data?I’m fairly novice mechanic
Eric Ozeta no , it will not . Your cars computer retains all important information , so you not gonna loose it , but you might loose your preprogrammed radio stations and might have to manually reset your clock on your dash - that’s it
Great video! Unfortunately the belt squeaks for a second on start up and if I put on the defroster setting on a cold start. Any idea what could cause this?
Mine did this too. I tightened the belt up just a bit and it went away.
I don't know if anyone has noticed, but I thought that was an idler pulley at first too. Turns out it's actually a water pump.
yaris has the 1.5L doesnt it?
It's a water pump. Not a idler
I am now hearing a loud squeak... did I do something wrong?
The belt likely is slipping a bit. Just tighten up the adjuster a bit.
i have a rattling noise on the paasenger side of the car. i believe it coming from the engine i have a 2009 corrolla CE. is anyone have this problem. please give suggestion of what might be the problem?
Hello Chelsey I'm having the exact same problem. I'm watching this video now because apparently removing the serpentine belt and running the car will help to see if the problem is with the belt/pulleys or if it's with the engine. I'm hoping my problem is not with the engine. Going to try this process today and let you know but since you commented this 11 months ago I would really appreciate you telling me if you found/fixed the problem!
@@angelai4556 did you run the engine without the belt? What was the result? I'm in the same boat.
@@thehousemann hello! So I ended up taking it to a shop in the end bc I didn't have time or trust myself to remove and replace the belt. It was my alternator coming loose! I don't remember the exact term but I got it fixed (should have done it myself because even with the refurbished part it was $$$) and it solved the problem. That vehicle ended up dying for other reasons though unfortunately RIP.
@@angelai4556 darn that sucks. Gonna start with replacing the water pump then go to the alternator if that doesn't fix it
The belt size
*Like !!!*
If you disconnect the battery- don’t forget to reset the idle. Yes, it sounds weird but it’s easy. Otherwise your idle will be off.
First time I heard that one
On a 2009 Corolla the idle will be a little fast after disconnecting the battery however the computer will reset the idle after driving it a bit.
@@davidhoulden5791Good to know. Thanks! I'll try and take note of that. I wonder if this car has a particular "relearn procedure". Some older Toyotas (and other brands) had such. One had to drive a particular way to get the computer to match up with the engine.
Does anyone knows the torque setting for the lower and upper bolt? Thanks
14 ft. lbf for upper bolt and 32 ft. lbf. for the lower bolt
idler pulley? think you mean water pump pulley.
Yeah! My thought exactly.
Correct
No need to disconnect the battery to change the belt..
Not a bad video, but no reason to disconnect the battery.
A wise precaution nonetheless. There are often wires on an alternator that connect directly to the battery, and are always hot, even with the key off. A slipped tool could cause a nasty short.
I can't for the life of me get the belt back on
Hazy 407Movement 2 years later I see your comment : but - easy trick for this
• hang belt loosely on side
• crawl underneath vehicle and start routing belt from bottom up / follow routing sequence - as far as you can reach up
• finish from top
• 1 / 2 minutes tops
• done ✅ easy peasy

Thanks great video!!!
