I don’t have a lot of experience with painting or staining fences so this video was very helpful. I appreciate the advice and expertise of someone who has done it a few times. This will help me with my backyard fence project that I’m starting today. It’s not huge, only 180 linear feet. But this will help to protect our investment for our backyard.
Sir! my good man, I want to thank you for the video. I completed my deck in record time, honestly I doubted this whole idea of spraying and forgetting, no brushing or rolling. reluctantly I decided to trust your process and just spray the entire deck not concerning myself with runs, puddles and drips. It looked terrible but I’m so glad I trusted you, after 30min drips were gone and only a few areas were still wet the following morning you couldn’t even tell it was sprayed. So simple and effective. For this I thank you, brilliant sir.
That's impressive. I have lattice for privacy on both sides of our deck and it took what seemed like forever to brush it on. It's been about 5 or 6 years and it's starting to look like it needs it again.
Great idea Steve, I guess you're actually applying more protectant with spraying so it's lasting longer. I'm going to remember this and keep an eye out for the large spray bottle to come on sale at PA. Cheers
Hi Steve, I found a mixture that works really well. Mix a gal of mineral spirits with about 3-400ml of boiled linseed oil. Melt a good hunk of parafin wax and mix all together. Check it out, really inexpensive and looks great. I wonder if it would spray from that pump sprayer? It's pretty thin once it's all mixed. I built a trailer with pressure treated wood and used this mixture to seal up the wood. Looks great and the water still beads up.
A question of solubility. Low enough wax in your primary solvent will not solidify clogging your sprayer. Too much and you'll have to use a hair dryer to unclog and reformulate.
Dumbing down of terpene penetration. Environmental bureaucracy making water base fashionable (presume a latex/alcohol formulary, don't know for sure) Think I'll self formulary using diesel /mineral oil/melted candles at appropriate ratios. Kerosene is very close to paint thinner &-or diesel. (slight dye in diesel but it's the cheapest & it's pure rough petro cut). Only for a deck. I've used Thompson's & copycat with good results but it's time to experiment. Railroad ties use hydrocarbons (degredation product). (don't like the idea of used motor oil for farm jobs/doesn't evaporate readily with polymerization). My first test. Approx 1gal diesel into metal shop vac canister cut down. Hotplate underneath. Significantly below flash point. One baby oil in though not really necessary. Heat till warm to touch at bottom. Paint stirrer/liquified candles. Add with stirring and warming. Add too much wax and prefer clear solution application, then thin with more diesel next morning. Apply to dry deck in summer with a few days to dry before any rain. Seems to penetrate well with no wax buildup on surface. Always drip into screw/nail areas. Don't be shy with the heat. Wax and diesel have flash points well above the human touch.
Absolutely, I use it all the time for stain but I do use either a roller or brush to even out the look as it will look blotchy in spots but it is much faster . Try a small area and see how it looks.
What type of tip do you have on your sprayer? Did you buy it? Mine came with a cheapie plastic one and it does not do a good job. Need help getting the right one please!
It's a metal spray tip . I bought these sprayers at Princess Auto $6 each. Most low cost sprayers will do just fine . Try one with a metal spray tip , much better.
Hi, thanks for this great video. If I am turning an indoor dining set into an outdoor dining set, do I need to spray this on as is, or are there other steps?
If it has a urethane gloss finish it won't work but if it has a plain stain on it ok as this water treatment needs to be able to soak into the wood so you can just soak a rag and apply it evenly with rubber gloves on and let it dry .
Do you happen to know if either Thompson's or Olympic is paintable? I'm building a shed with T1-11 plywood siding and am looking for a good water sealant to put on as a primer. And then I will paint over it.
I would check with the manufacturer to be sure but I'm thinking if you put it on as a primer the paint will not stick at all. I use a good latex exterior primer , then paint.
So we just bought a new house. Front porch is all wood and same with back deck. I sprayed it with the same product you showed in video. I just noticed that it offers no UV protection or “sealant”. Is this product alone OK or should I add something else on top of that ?
Matt its good as is. When it rains you will see it bead up on the surface . When it stops beading up its time to respray as high traffic areas may need a yearly spray to every 3 to 5 years on spots with little traffic.
It seems like a product you can just spray every few years to protect the wood. Do you still recommend pressure washing prior to applying (assuming the wood has been sprayed a few year before)?
Hi Steve...we have an old deck that's painted but the color is matted and can never stay looking clean. Wanted to add this sealant for protection but also a little sheen. Will it give it a bit of a glossy look when dried?
I have a horizontal semi privacy fence ima try a sponge and pressure sprayer like yours to see which one Is better. I may have alot of waste with a sprayer since it's around an inch between each board
Rob the spray method will use more product but its much faster than a brush or roller as well I find I can get more of the product applied in a spray but a brush is a good alternative using less product so choose the best for your needs. Cheers 👍
As long as you rinse out the container and run some hot water thru the system to clean it , as long as your using a water based sealer like this one. . I've never experienced any clogs after cleaning. Cheers
Skipper, I used a good ole deck sprayer no different than a roundup sprayer. As long as you have a fan nozzle attachment it will work, at least it was my experience with the sealer he recommended. Amazing results and crazy simple, he was 100% correct with all his recommendations, just spray it and trust it will dry even and completely invisible. Large puddles if you happen to see one, I would add to spread it some with a brush. I had one very thick area that I should of address, lesson learned. Was able to easily clean it up after the fact. Good luck!
I use to use that sealer and changed and now I can't go back....love you're idea......but can't use it.....Ah...the days when we could get oil based stains...now we have to go to the states to get it.....CHEERS
How's she goin'? I have brushed and sprayed decks with water sealer many times. Here's my opinion. Both jobs are no fun!!! BUT spraying is the way to go. Better coverage and penetration and quicker. So if you have to do a job that's no fun, doing it quick is better right? Take care and thanks for sharing!!!
Would there be any reason not to put this on my roof? I got a new roof and have been thinking of this for awhile now. It works really great on part of the shed roof. It beads off that part and into the non treated area and immediately spreads out when it touches. The only thing im not sure of is if it will react with anything in the roof

Good question . A sealer just sinks into the wood to preserve it from the weather like a stain but polyurethane seals it but hardens to protect the wood like a paint . My cool temperature and Texas cool is a huge difference :) Anything above 60F is fine because you try and spray it on a mid summer day full sun in Texas and it will dry up before it gets a chance to soak in so cooler is better on a cloudy day .
@@SteveRobReviews so in theory, in repelling water and not having it absorbed, by me sealing the wood and touching up when needed should slow the aging and gray coloring of the wood fence, right??
