Shaun starter issues. I had the same problem, correct supply voltage measured but starter wouldn’t kick in after driving for a while, never a problem when cold or not driven for a while. It turned out to be the supply wire was a bit short and while driving it would stretch ever so slight causing just enough resistance to reduce the current. Can confirm. Wiring looms are often just BARELY long enough, and any heat expansion puts them under strain. ...And that's why my Silverado has about 20' more wire in it than it did when I bought it.
something simple that you've probably done but often over looked is the earth cables. Never can have 2 many earths. I did the Oombi track a few years ago (in a lifted Series 80, a series 100, and an Oka) when the community was still there. It took us three and a half days to get from Home Valley to Oombulgurri, and we thought that was bad. You guys had it worse. River crossings were about the same, but the track was rockier and more overgrown for you guys. Great to see familiar sights like Cockburn Range, Wilson and Durack Crossings and that great croc-free swimming hole, where we actually camped. Thanks for the memories. Looking forward to the rest of the trip. Coincidentally, my neighbour built the School and Post office at Oombi, but the track in was better maintained in his time.
Great Video guys! As an 80 owner I was chasing the intermittent starter issues. Rebuilt starter, different starter, new battery, alternator, ignition switch and fusible link and still had issues. I found low voltage (6-8v) at the solenoid when it tried to engage the solenoid but the voltage wasn't high enough to engage the solenoid with full force. I knew it wasn't the cables because it would start with a wire from the cable at the starter. I believe it was the result of too much resistance in the old wiring. I was suspicious of the accessory cut-out relay drawing too much but wired In a relay with a fused lead from the battery, activated by the original ignition wire. I am driving a US spec. FZJ80 12 volt with a 4BT Cummins conversion so I don't have an auxiliary solenoid nor was there one originally . That seems to have fixed it. So it was more of an old rig issue. It is cool to see a hardcore wheeler using a wire to jump the starter- I know it's not just me!
I would have removed spring leaves until the broken ubolt was long enough to bolt back together, could always move weight & use a log as a extended bump stop to limit travel
U-bolts aren't threaded up the full length. If it broke above the threads, that wouldn't work. ...And this is why I have a mini buzz-box welder on my rig... It wouldn't be a PRETTY fix, but it'll be a fix.

Starter issue could be the switch block in the colum. Mud dirt ect gets into them and causes intermitant electrical issues. Sometimes you can pull them apart and clean them. Also as mentioned previously a heavy earth strap too the block helps 🤟
What I did on my American 4Runner that was having the same issue with the starter. As I took a Ford starter solenoid. About the same as a winch solenoid. Have not had an issue since then and it's been over 4 years. Keep up the great content Fellas, we love watching you up here in the PNW!
Hindsight is always 20/20, but here are a few ideas for future trips: 1. I have watched several of your videos where you comment "there is nowhere to tie a winch to" (beach, mud flat, etc.). Cary a Danforth folding boat anchor with you. To use, stretch your winch line out as far as possible so that you will pull at as flat an angle as possible. Dig a hole to completely bury the anchor with a ramp in for the winch line. 2. Cary a high lift jack. It will help you get un-stuck often when nothing else will. Include a flat metal plate so that it won't bury itself when trying to jack on soft surfaces. 3. Install a welder in at least one of the units, and carry a couple of two foot lengths of rebar, as well as a couple of small flat plates. 4. You might think about talking to the boys at Edison Motors up in Canada about building a hybrid rig with a small diesel to run the generator, and electric axels for drive. All the torque that you could ever hope for, and much improved fuel economy for those long treks. I hope that some of these thoughts will prove to be useful.
I've snapped my locating bolt and U Bolt's same as you. I used a chain around the diff back 2 the towbar and ran my whinch under the front and around the diff and adjusted till rite. I then lashed the diff too the leaf pack with 2.5 tonne ratchet straps. I don't use or trust them little straps. It worked and held till I got home out of the mountains back of Taralga NSW. Slow trip home but it got me home
Hi, STARTER ISSUE, im sure someone has commented out of the 900 messages lol.... check and change you ignition switch, but most importantly, your wires. the factory wires are probably has corrosion on the inside of the wires.... (espicially with all the water crossing you guys do) happened to me. swap for a new ground wire, new starter power wires, and probably new ignition switch/wires to that relay and it will work awesome. WHEN i finally cut my old wires open and saw the corrosion, it created resistance and lowered voltage..... other mods, install a push button starter, wire the button to a relay that only supplies power to the button from an acc wire... means when the truck is on acc, you can push the button to start the truck. you dont have to cut open the wire looms and go through that mess, just tun new wires, label them and bypass the wireloom.
Hmm maybe the starter issue has something to do with the grounding, I replaced a starter and it did the same thing until I checked the grounding and it wasn’t right, so maybe give that a look
I had the same problem with my 80 when I converted it from petrol to diesel with the starter motor not working all the time. Installed a 40 amp relay from battery using the original starter trigger wire from starter motor and have never had a problem since. I think your problem is amps not voltage. A lot of after market truck starter motors now come with a external relay mounted to them because they have the same issue
I'm still watching after 28 minutes tho just in case but the first river and Graham not stopping as anchor makes me think old what's chances Graham did it both trips
You need to cut the excess thread of your U bolts after they are correctly tensioned, that way they wont catch on anything and prevent them from breaking. Just ask Barnsy at Birdsville Road house. if he hasn't retired.
The starter gets heat soaked. Need to custom build a heat shield to deflect as much heat as possible from the starter. Had to do that to an old truck I had. After I put the heat shield on the truck and a new starter at the same time I never had another starter problem.
Hi Shaun, I'm Jason, and the past twelve months, I've had problems starting my bravo, it would start fist go many times after problem time, then it was third go to 30 attempts, I even joined RACQ incase a problem. Brand new battery, no go Brand new starter motor no go Behind the ignition switch or barrel had another ignition electronic switch, replacement was it's faith of starting great again
Intermittent break on the starter solenoid wire maybe, between the relay and the solenoid at the starter motor. bring a multimeter with you next time and when it's not starting and you just hear the click, check for 12v on the solenoid feeder wire. other than that it could be a corroded/dirty ground from the engine but that doesnt really explain why it starts with the wire jumper every time. that fact will lead me to believe its something on the control side before the solenoid wire and maybe an intermittent break/corroded terminal (as things move/vibrate and head/cool, they can make or break connections. check every single connection for green corrosion or loose terminals between the solenoid and the key. wish i could have joined on this trip boys, looked like a great time
Shauno you should check all your ground/neutral connections and make sure they are getting a good ground. But definitely a connection issue like a loose wire or ground. Could also be a wire that’s almost broken all the copper inside the insulation of the wire to where you can’t see it. So also a good idea to test all wires.
I just had this differential issue happen to me a few weeks ago. Day 5 out in the mountains of arkansas solo with my blue heeler. Luckily ran into another overlander and we ended up getting the diff somewhat centered. After 2 floor jacks gave way and the back end of my jeep xj fell on top of me pinning me underneath my fuel tank, i lived to see another day and continued on the 10 day journey.
My 80 series has 650,000ks on it and I had the same starting issue. For me it only happened when the engine had been running for a few hours. The only fix was to replace the Earth cable running from the Starter battery to the block and also the fusible link on the starter battery also. So far so good.

An hour long! Im saving this for tonight when i can grab a snack and crack a cold one!
Shauno, I have had a similar problem in the past with starter failures. It can be caused by corrosion inside the starter cables. They may look fine but underneath the sheathing corrosion increases the resistance to the point where you’re losing power or ground. Change the cables.
How lucky that you guys are the first guys through nearly every year. I had to re-watch the trip from 3 years ago to see the differences. Love it. How things change.
Hi Guys, Love your videos. About 35 years ago, I was on the Cape York track in a 1980 Subaru 4WD wagon, when the rear end broke. I fixed it with some bush welding. 2 12V batteries connected in SERIES, giving you 24V. Also, with the electrical problems, check the EARTH connections. They can often give strange problems. All the best with your adventures.
Owgoodzat what a trip and some good Barra Shaun awesome. I have been over that Durack Crossing by boat and that’s crazy enough but never by car, that’s next level. Love your work guys and if your ever back this way I’ll take you out fishing by boat next time 👌🤙. Cheers legends awesome vid 🙌🍻🎣🎣🎣🎣
Fun video! On the first challenge, Ronnie was probably biding his time knowing he should have gone first, letting you lads have your fun. Might have saved hours. 😂
Shaun I know a bloke had same issue with the starter motor on his 80 series..He managed to get it sorted by replacing with Land Rover and hasn't had an issue since…
Check or replace your bonding strap from the engine block to the Negative on the battery, 100 strands could be broken and only 10 intact that would still allow everything else to run but not enough hold the current required for starting!
I'm wondering if maybe there's damage of some sort to the starter power leads causing voltage drop. Had a similar issue with mine, mud got in to the terminals and while continuity tested fine, the cross sectional area of the contact had been reduced and was causing extra resistance on the circuit
That was really an epic episode like the previous Kimberley River trip. Kimberley River trip never disappoints. Eagerly waiting for the next episode of this trip.
Perhaps fuel system is losing prime / some air getting in when it cools down. If it has the standard Totota button primer pump on the fitting the fuel filter screws on to they are renowned for leaking air whe the diaphram gets a pinhole or old.
GDay Shaun, regarding your starting issue, I reckon it's the wire supplying the starter motor with the current that's causing the problem. The resistance might be too high which is not supplying the current current. If you haven't changed it already, try swapping it out to a slightly larger gauge wire and it should solve the problem. I would also look at your ignition wiring just to be safe. Any type of corrosion on the contacts will result in the current not passing correctly. Throughly enjoyed this episode mates, cheers.
Awesome video as always Shauno and Graham. This is an epic adventure so far and is only going to get wider from here. Thanks for letting us ride along with y’all on y’all’s adventures.
With the starter. Check the voltage whilst holding in crank position at the solenoid if you can. If it works with the jumper wire then there must be excessive voltage drop. To diagnose you just keep checking whilst holding the key in crank position until you find where the voltage is around 12v. If the relay has been replaced, try bridging the load circuit pins at the relay socket. It could even be the 12v supply to the relay or high resistance between the relay and the starter motor. Good luck.
Shaun , i had the issue before , but for my case it was my keys ignition had gone faulty so i replaced the igntion and key out of chance of loosing my keys and it fixed my problem. Since it also got recalibrated when the new keys arrived . Since the key could also be worn down , meaning its not signaling the right switches to turn the car on [ starter etc ]
love you guys being back together the best i love that track but the most vav is the one with the like 80* angle into the water forgot it's name but truly amazing
Shauno - Had a similar starting issue on a 1HDT 80. Check the connector under the windshield washer reservoir on the LH inner fender, the trigger wire for the starter passes through it (white wire). Mine was corroded at the connector and was making just enough contact to occasionally work (and show correct voltage), but often wouldn't trigger the starter. This is all downstream of the starter relay (which I can hear clicking in the clip). Easy Check and easy fix. Let me know how you make out!
Shaun. I had an old ford ranger that went through starter solenoids all the time like Sooty seems to be doing. I ended up running a set of heavy duty cables up near the top of the hood and capped them off. That way when it failed to start again, i didn't have to crawl under the vehicle and could bump the starter over much easier. I never found out what was causing the failures other than the parts where just poorly designed and allowed water/dirt/moisture into the unit and sticking the plunger/windings or whatever.

Rossi inverter stick welder, 150 $ 5.5 kilo, always packed in my 4x
It’s so great to see Shauno and Graham back wheeling together again. It’s just not the same without the team.
When does part 2 come out?
Watching this whilst sitting at Wyndham Caravan park with a coldie! Absolute legends!
This was worth the wait!!!
Aww these are the trips I absolutely love!! Can't wait for the next episode!!
Fun video! On the first challenge, Ronnie was probably biding his time knowing he should have gone first, letting you lads have your fun. Might have saved hours. 😂
Yeah. He sure had to cross it all by himself on the way back and nobody cared. I guess he knows better :-)
It is nice to see the team together again!!!
Shaun I know a bloke had same issue with the starter motor on his 80 series..He managed to get it sorted by replacing with Land Rover and hasn't had an issue since…
Yucky
😂
Taking the piss there haha
Check or replace your bonding strap from the engine block to the Negative on the battery, 100 strands could be broken and only 10 intact that would still allow everything else to run but not enough hold the current required for starting!
I'm thinking that, or same issue anywhere else in the high current starter circuit, I had the same issue once after a bit too much mud in a bog hole
I'd be checking the engine grounds on sooty. I remember having a similar issue with a mates car after changing out 2 starter motors.
That 80 is one of the prettiest things i've ever seen in my life
THE BOYS!!! NOTHING BEATS A TRIP WITH THE GANG
Absolutely nothing!
1st one from New Zealand great video
Perhaps fuel system is losing prime / some air getting in when it cools down. If it has the standard Totota button primer pump on the fitting the fuel filter screws on to they are renowned for leaking air whe the diaphram gets a pinhole or old.
Champion effort in the river azz
GDay Shaun, regarding your starting issue, I reckon it's the wire supplying the starter motor with the current that's causing the problem. The resistance might be too high which is not supplying the current current. If you haven't changed it already, try swapping it out to a slightly larger gauge wire and it should solve the problem. I would also look at your ignition wiring just to be safe. Any type of corrosion on the contacts will result in the current not passing correctly.
Throughly enjoyed this episode mates, cheers.
Huh this is a repeat...
Awesome video as always Shauno and Graham. This is an epic adventure so far and is only going to get wider from here. Thanks for letting us ride along with y’all on y’all’s adventures.
That camper with that Chevrolet tow rig is what dreams are made of right down to the colour match black 🖤 and chrome ⚡🍀😍👍🙏
this is awesome guys, I really enjoyed this episode, can't wait for second part! best of luck, cheers!
Doing the Oombulgurri again! Hell yeah lads!
So awesome to see the old guard back together with Ronnie!
Liams plan to strap it up with logs to stop travel to prevent extra load on the u bolts was on fucking point.
Holy smokes, Shaun's got some balls. That river crossing with the croc was amazing!!
What a stomper, and its probably going to get more crazy...
Thanks for the share 👀👍🤙
