Also forgot to mention filters. Having the 82mm filter thread on the 14-30mm is more convenient and cheaper for filters. Filters for the 14-24mm are expensive and a deal more larger.
To adapt or not to adapt? That is the question. Is it worth adapting F mount lenses to Z cameras? Or should you just stick with Z lenses on Z cameras? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below 👇

Nice comparison, Adrian! I love my old 14-24 2.8G.

Hi Adrian, a great comparison video, buddy! For me, the most important property of any gear is its usability for my particular use case. So, for lenses I use for my landscape photography that means especially size, weight, and being able to use a wide range of focal lengths. Your decision based on wanting to use the lens with both cameras is absolutely comprehensible. I think, I would decide exactly like you in your situation 😉
Thank you for the video and enjoy your weekend,
    Christian

Exactly what you said. Because I still use my D850 I have kept the 14-24mm f 2.8G lens. As you said I can use it on the ZF I own. It's also not worth selling these days I don't think. Used prices are not fabulous which is fine.

So interesting to see how they stack up. It seemed the most noticeable difference was on the outer edges, where as in the centre of frame it was pretty close. Great points to consider whether buying or selling, it's always important not to get rid of gear too quickly or regret it later.

I don't know if it was a change in weather conditions or not, but the color difference and brightness on the newer lens was dramatic to my eyes. I'd say overall, the 14-30 seemed much sharper. And the weight and price difference is substantial. To me, the obvious choice would be the 14-30. Great comparison Adrian, no one does these side by side videos as well as you do. Hope all is well mate, have a great weekend!

Thanks for watching Paul. I had the exact same settings on the camera, (sorry I should have mentioned that) so good you picked up on the color differentiation. I know I just got inside before a rain storm hit the garden, so it was a little dark out beforehand. I enjoy seeing the differences in these types of video, they are fun to do. Have a great weekend, take care 🙏📸

The ultra wide zoom for my D850 was the Tokina 16-28mm f2.8 and it worked great for what I needed. Maybe not to the level of the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 but close at half the price. When I purchased the Z7 I went with the 14-30 F4.0, I couldn't justify paying more than twice the price for the 14-24mm f2.8S. I love the 14-30mm f 4.0 ... it's sharp, light and compact and with today's sensor technology the difference between f 2.8f and f4.0 is negligible...IMHO. Thank you for these videos, very straightforward and honest.

The 14-30 is one of the most annoying lenses Nikon have made in the sense of completely polarised results from people using it. You got great results here, my copy had poor corners and terrible vignetting at 14mm to the point where you wouldn't want to use it at 14mm F4. It improved a lot at F5.6. I sent it back as for the money it wasn't good enough at F4 and wide open. You don't buy a 14mm F4 lens to use it at 18mm F5.6. I'm saving up for the 14-24 F2.8 now.

I was just thinking when you were talking about the slight difference in view, at about 5minutes something, that of course the 14-24 is sat on an FTZ adapter, so of course it will be a tad further forward, and make the brim at the bottom almost disappear, right?

I have just bought the 14-30 F4S and traded all my F mount DSLR gear (with one exception). It is a MUCH better lens than the one it replaces 16-35F4 G. It is fun to use. I really like the extra width as well. Thanks for the video. It is always interesting to see how a lens you own compares. I am happy nowadays to pick a lens which has specific characteristics. I looked at the 14-24 F2.8S but I opted to go with the compact F4 because it is very good optically AND it is light and compact for travel. I have a trip coming up and I need to make sure I can stay within the weight limits and carry it in the field. Lightness really does count. Looking at the images the 14-30 F4S produces is a pleasure. They are impressively sharp, have good colours and the clarity is really good to see.

Great Video! I recently purchased a Excellent Mint copy of the 14-24mm for 1K Canadian. I was considering the 14-30mm. But I couldn't pass up the deal on the 14-24mm. I wanted a wide angle lens so I could shoot landscape and astro photography. The 14-24mm was my choice.

Great review! I have the 14-24 f/2.8 and am currently considering trading it for a Z-mount equivalent as I got rid of my old D3s for a Z7ii. The Z mount f/2.8 is over 3k Cdn., vs the f/4 at $1500 so less than half the cost. Doubtful the Z-mount f/2.8 is worth 2x the cost of the f/4 for my purposes but will wait for your next review! Also, don’t like the fact I can’t put a filter on the F-mount f/2.8, which is one of the reasons why I don’t use that lens nearly as much as I would like to.

Thanks! I have watched this twice and I am now satisfied that I don’t need a 14-24 F lens. I find that having 30mm on the Z means that, unlike 24mm max, I don’t feel the need for a 40 or 50mm to walk around with...

Nice video! I have the 14-24 but dont have a mirrorless camera so my decision is already made. I do like the results from both lenses and the 14-30 is a touch sharper from what I see. But I still love the extra stop and build of my 14-24. Cheers.

    Love your videos.
I'm curious as to why there was (looked like) a one stop brighter on the Z vs. the F lens? Secondly, I have the D850 (your fault) and I love it but also have the z5 (want the zf) because I wanted to adapt old manual lenses from the Nikkor 50mm 1.4non-ais to my 50mm Leica summicron.....
Have you tried the Viltrox 20mm 2.8 and the 85mm Meike 85mm F1.4 in the zed mount? I think they have a lot of character.

Adrian, thank you for this comparison, it is very helpful. Now that the G lens can be found pre-owned for around $700 in the US, I guess deciding which one to get depends on how long you plan on using your DSLR. In either case, great video as always. Enjoy the weekend.
