VI had very cool features though : tools, blitzes, swdtech/bushido, rages, dances, lores/blue magic, weapons that cast magic when swung, equipment that cast magic when broken, there are effects never seen before or after like spells that exchange status, that halve levels, that nullify a random element on both sides for the duration of the battle, the Debilitator tool to make an enemy weak against a random element, runic, morph, Gogo who has an editable battle-command list in the status screen, or you could build characters around evasion... There is actually quite a lot of depth to the battle system, especially with relics usage (I like the Merit Award that allows a character to equip any weapon type compared to the forced weapon-types of FF7, 8, 9 & 10) but it's true you gotta dig a bit since it's not "in-your-face". I also love that there are so many playable characters and the multi-party dungeons. The only flaws of its battle system really is : one that Ultima is OP, and two : that most new players will just teach all magics to everyone so all characters will feel samey by the end, but it's on the players. At least you're free to do whatever you like, compared to an episode like 9 where customization and experimentation is very limited. You definitely have more fun in subsequent playthroughs when you limit yourself a bit in that one (I like the "each esper only equippable to one person" and "no op esper allowed" rules, so you don't use spells that rob the game of all challenge like Araise, Reraise, Curaga, Firaga/Thundaga/Blizzaga, or Ultima).
As for desperation attacks I like that they're very rare "hidden strength" skills that you can't rely on and might just save your butt during boss fights when you think all is lost. Sure, you might not see one in your 50-hours playthrough but it blows your mind when you see one, like "wtf just happened?! I won that even though I was getting my ass kicked?!". Their rarity + absence of player control make them special compared to the other limit break systems that you can just spam. It's also not like FF9 where you can see the gauge progressing and the trances trigger at the end of easy random battles, but we all agree the trance system in 9 sucks.
So in the end I'd put 6 one tier higher and probably 7R,10-2 and the 13 series lower because they're not relaxing to me (especially 13 where your eyes are busy being focused on gauges and numbers all the time - what happens in battle is gorgeous but you barely have any time to enjoy it because you have to constantly monitor your paradigms, the stagger gauges, your HP...) and I dislike when two people can act at the exact same time - too chaotic for my tastes. Totally agree with your S-tier, I also love 10, 12, 5 and 8 *...and Tactics too!* (never played 14). Good list!
