Spurs are ranked 24 all together defensively but they have the 8th best defense in the league when Wemby is on the floor. When hes on the floor, he automatically makes his team better than 16 other teams defenses. Just one rookie doing that. You have to consider that. Saying "theyre 24th in defense" is being disingenuous.
Yes. He’s not coaching the team… he’s not accountable of his team’s defense when he’s not on the court 😂😂😂
Spurs are dead last when wemby leaves the floor.
dead last by a wide margin...
Nah they're 6th with him on the court dead last without .. 26 placement points
He doesn’t want Wemby to be DPOY because Draymond is in that category 🤣🤣🤣 too many DPOY’s for Wemby and people start to forget about Draymond. Just the way it is
It’s not defensive team of the year….it’s defensive PLAYER of the year. An individual who impacts other teams offense… that’s Wemby 💯
And how can you be defensive player of the year if your own team has one of the worst defenses in the league, it’s like how they ain’t gonna give MVP to Luka if his team stays as the 8th seed
They're 6th with Wemby on the court and dead last without him. That's a huge impact defensively made by a ROOKIE.
Very very true I think there really missing this bro
Why Wemby is your 2024 DPOY:
- Leads the league in blocks (by far)
- Leads the league in stocks (by far) - #2 in steals league-wise in February…
- Spurs defense is elite (#5) with him on the floor. Could have been higher had he played center full season…
- Spurs defense is DEAD LAST when he’s off the floor. Not only dead last but also historically bad defensively. Competing for the “worst defensive team ever” title when he’s off the court.
- Only player with 10 blocks in a game this season.
- Only player with back to back 5steals 5blocks games since MJ.
- And the number of shots the opposing team does not take because he’s there is probably his biggest argument that does not show up in the stat sheet.
- Opposing teams are setting high screens, double screens, re-screens, just to make sure he’s out of the paint… for a rookie… That’s how impactful he is.
He is the DPOY and it’s not even close.
Agreed 1000% if he gets robbed of this it will be so shitty. These are the stats that need to brought up on podcasts and on media
@@TorsteintheTitanyou said it my man. Stats don’t lie… And the eye test is an even stronger argument for Wemby as DPOY… Hopefully voters will base their decision on facts not feelings. We’ll see
I had to scroll to see all of this.
If we think about it, those players playing with Wemby also play significantly when Wemby is on the bench due to the minute restriction and odd rotation. The fact that Spurs defense is so bad when Wemby is on bench show those players playing with Wemby are bad at the defense. Then Wemby being able to improve the defense so much despite playing with those folks is amazing. Also you pointed out that 1 quarter of the season Wemby is playing with Zach at center, who is terrible at defense.
@@horai8256This. Thanks for bringing that up. Indeed it also means he also plays with terrible players defensively… And the funny thing is that his play actually takes those players defensive ratings up… Which had a few analysts laughing at ESPN because they could not comprehend players like Champagnie and Jones having decent defensive ratings… They’re just in some of Wemby’s rotations… When he’s not in with them (which happens 25% of the time because of Wemby’s minutes restriction you see their true defensive impact… Abyssal.)
The Spurs are ranked 6th best defensive team when Wemby is on the court. It’s a player award, not a team award. He has the best individual stats defensively.
When he's on the court, Sprurs are a top 5 defense in the league.
Top 3. Maybe they’ve slipped but at one time that was true. Either way, his impact is ridiculous.
It’s DPOY NOT DTPOY. The fact that his team is last on defense when he is out and top 5 when he plays talk enough of his defensive impact
What other player when is out his team is collapsing defensively ?
This whole Tatum MVP narrative is so forced and unnecessary. He's a great player, top 10 in the league and one of the mvp candidates. His case isn't close to Shai, Jokić or Luka
Tatum isnt an MVP candidate. He really really is not even close to it.
who 😂😂😂
It’s a top 5 defensive when Wemby is on the court
Wemby DPOY 100% why not…
Because the Spurs aren’t winning games and I can’t remember a time in nba history where the dpoy winner played for a WAY below .500 team. I think he deserves it too but dpoy is like the MVP. You gotta be the best defender on the best team not the best defender on the worse team.
@@imnotblindbutiloveblindfol8449 that’s understandable but at the same time he has the best stats of everyone in the nba by un the month of February so I don’t know
He literally spent 10 minutes explaining why not just for you to comment this. You people are AI bots im convinvced
@@CANTHATEmeNAMEhaha no we’re not mate. 😅 That’s because we LISTENED to the whole 10 minutes and disagree with it that people react to it. Facts tell a different story than Mr Green’s
and what are the facts? When have we seen a DPOY from at team that was at the bottom of the league defensively. Thats not flawed logic at all. @@Peroriperora
I disagree , ROTY is an individual award. Everyone agrees. I believe DPOY is also an individual award. this is not a TEAM defense award. Because their team defense is bad should be no factor
But Marc Gasol won it based on anchoring his team's best defense.
You have to look at Wemby’s defensive rating when he’s on and off the court. Ranked 3rd when he’s on and in last when he’s off the court. He should win the dpoy
20 and 10 with 3 blocks a game. Should be ROY and DPOY
He had a triple double with blocks. Who has done that? And leads the lead with175 blocks
And he’s only 20
@@g.o.a.t3566and he never plays full minutes
Who has done that? Theres been quite a few of defensive players dude. You're showing your age.😂

Defensive PLAYER of the year NOT best defensive TEAM of the year
AMEN TO THAT JAY!!!
Exactly
Wemby is Rookie of the year. Media just wants more storylines.
um just because your team is garbage in defence don't mean you cant win dpoy. dpoy is a individual record and victor is dominating that better than any other player in the league. to help you better understand one guy can't make your team be top 10 in defense no matter how good the defence is and dpoy is a individual record not a team record.
just make a poll amongst active NBA players who they think most/worried about when they are on offense. i am pretty sure, the majority would say Wemby.
if there is a statline that counts how many times a player have to change his mind on offense (pass or adjust the angle/dynamics of the shot) because he saw an alien, Wemby clears DPOY.
I want Draymond to compare the spurs D with and without him on the floor, very much so helps his DPOY case… he can only control what he can control, we cannot forget that, but yeah I get what he means by moving the needle, I just struggle to believe Gobert makes that spurs D any better and Welby makes that Timberwolves D any worse
Dray I agree with you 99%. But your comparison to moving the line towards Tatum (if Wemby wins DPOY) is contradictory. Precisely if Wemby would win DPOY with a bad overall team/defense, that would make the case for JT not being considered at all for MVP (currently he is solely in the conversation because of his team record)
Clever point. Totally agree with you
totally agree that 2nd year players should not be eligible for ROY. well explained.
this is chets first season, meaning his first playing season. so hes a rookie. Embid missed like 2 years and was a rookie, so did ben simmons
@@Therealmikebobaguardif you were already on an nbas team payroll for a year receiving their coaching their training and developing chemistry with that team for a year you’re not a true rookie. It was a mistake when Blake and Simmons won it.
@alexescutia4805 if the nba says he's a rookie, he's a rookie, deal with it, as of right now it doesn't even matter cause the seasons over and wemby has it on lock
@@Therealmikebobaguard still a joke you can be considered a rookie
I didn't realize defensive player of the year was a team award. Com' on draymond do better
Is DPOY an individual or a collective award ? I though was individual....
When Wemby is in the court the Spurs have a top 3 defense statically, when he isn’t they have the worst defense in the league. He leads the league in STOCKS by a lot. He definitely has a good case for DPOY.
Defensive player of the year is an individual award, also when Wemby is on the bench the Spurs or a bottom 5 defensive team but when he is playing they are a top five defensive team, that fact alone should give him defensive player of the year.
In my opinion, I don’t understand how the defensive keyword player of the year is not wemby. His team is horrible at defense when he’s off the court when he’s on the court he makes their defense top five in the league if that’s not defensive player of the year I don’t know what is.
Green doesn’t want Wemby to win DPOY 😂
If a single player can turn one of the 4 worst defenses into one of the top 4 when they're on the court, I wouldn't leave them out of the conversation for DPOY.
They been top 5 in defense the last 5 games when wemby is on the floor gobert at least has Jaden defensively
And Anthony Edwards… who’s up there in steals/game
So the award should be defensive team of the year not defensive player of the year. 🤷♂️
Compare the effect while players are on the floor instead of their team record. Player impact on defense is all you should be looking at.
Wemby should be DPOY no doubt
DPOY when Wemby is on they’re 6-8 defensively when he’s off they’re last
It’s defensive PLAYER of the year not defensive TEAM of the year
Who the hell is a better defender than Victor? If he doesnt win dpoy its obviously bullshit
I agree that the record should matter for individual awards outside of RotY. The case for Wembanyama is the Spurs are the 6th best defense when he's one the floor and DEAD LAST when he's off the floor. And since it IS an individual award, that kind of individual impact is just extraordinary and that's why he's getting those odds. The man is just an incredible one-man show on defense where he covers a surface area simply no other player in the league can, maybe in the history of the game (wasn't around when Wilt was playing but that's the one name that maybe has a case).
Wemby 100% ROY and DPOY
Nobody has done +10 blocks and a triple 5 this season besides him.
His defensive impact on the game is crazy.
It killed Draymond to throw in a sentence for Rudy Gobert…notice how he didn’t state clearly that Rudy should win DPOY.
I'm predicting multiple quad dubs starting next year when minutes are extended.
also, GO SPURS GO!
He should will DPOY. It’s not a team award. It’s not defensive team of the year
Wemby is definitely defensive player of the year. Pretty obvious via the eye test and the numbers support it. I haven’t seen this kind of presence since Ben Wallace. It’s funny how some of these NBA player podcasts want to be different than mainstream media, but then buy into the same narratives. “Gotta be on winning team”. “Gotta have top ranked defense”. It’s just more of the same.
I agree that Wemby doesn't currently deserve to be considered for DPOY, but he does deserve to be on the NBA All-Defensive First team in his rookie year
who def better ?
In fact, no one
Key word defensive “player” of the year and not team award
1. Its NOT a requirement for your team to be good to get DPOY. There are NO requirements for DPOY other than playing a certain amount of games. Having a good team defense is basically just a tradition.
2. The facts. Spurs are somewhere around top 5-7 defense with him on the court and bottom of the league when he's off the court. He can guard both guys on the PnR by himself, he can defend on the perimeter and at the rim, he jumps passing lanes and picks pockets to get his steals, he does everything on defense.
3. The eye test. He makes defense fun. He's blocked a majority of the league's superstars at least once or twice and has big blocks around clutch time. Its crazy to watch people just pass up "open" layups or floaters because they're not sure if he's close enough to block it but he probably is. This dude is redefining how much I thought one person was capable of defensively.
He should be a rookie and DPOY. Gobert's gameplay is one-dimensional; his defensive effectiveness dwindles once he's removed from his comfort zone. Conversely, Victor isn't confined to a stationary zone; he adapts dynamically, displaying performance levels not characteristic of a rookie but rather akin to a top 20 or even top 15 player this season. While some may argue that the Spurs aren't contenders-and indeed, no single player can guarantee victory-a glance at the scoreboard during Victor's customary rest periods reveals this truth. Consequently, team victories shouldn't sway the voting process. Instead, the decisive factor should be the defensive pressure exerted by a player while on the court.
When Wemby is on the floor the spurs are top 6 in defense. You’ve got to look at analytics. DPOY is an individual player award based on what you contribute. He’s leading in blocks and leads all bigs in steals.
Can you explain why the DPOY award depends on your team defensive standing? 🙏🏾
DPOY is not a team award, Wemby has earned it don’t cheat him because of the team
What matters for DPOY is defensive impact and the one that has the biggest impact this season is far and away Wemby.
Had he played 38 min his team would be much higher in the defensive team ratings.
It won't matter if he doesn't win DPOY this year. The award will be retired to him by year 2.
"draymond please help us we need you to step up your game!!!"
draymond:
Give Defensive "Team" Of The Year To T'Wolves.
Give the Defensive "Player" Of The Year To Wemby.
I'm glad to hear Draymond giving the DPOY to Rudy (and the Wolves). share some love.
Agree 100% with his 2nd and 3rd year “Rookie” argument. Doesn’t matter if you don’t play the first year, the year still happened lol. People are hilarious.
Is the award for defensive TEAM of the year or for defensive PLAYER of the year? The Spurs ARE on of the best defensive teams in the NBA when he’s on the floor! You guys don’t want to give him DPOY because you know this is the last year anyone else will have a chance at it for the next ten years.
ROTY, DPOY anything less is criminal
Green hand looks like Roger Rabbits 💪🏾
Eemby is DPOY, Spurs elite defense with him worst without
If Wemby can't get DPOY + ROTY with these numbers and achievements then the duo award will never happen. And any discussion about getting DPOY and ROTY should never be entertained in any discussion. EVER.
The problem here with the Chet being a second year rookie argument is that Wemby has been a professional basketball player for years preparing for this moment. Chet was a junior in highschool when Wemby went pro. I don't know if one year in the NBA without playing, and actually recovering from injury, makes him so much more ready than a guy who's been playing pro ball and getting ready for the NBA for 4 years. In that same time span Chet played two years in highschool, one in college, and one year not playing.
I mean playing with your team for an extra year and you act like overseas and nba is the same. Chet Older as well so nmw Wemby clears him
Wemby just got torched tonight. There goes any consideration for DPOY. He'll have lots of chances in the future to get it and I hope he uses it as fuel to get better.
He had 11 rebounds and 7 blocks? 🤣🤣
? Rudy gobert gets torched and dunked on but still be winning.
This award has always been thought of as the best defensive player on a good defensive team, but look up DPOY award and find this…
“Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY or DPOTY) is the name of an award given in sports for outstanding defensive play by a single player over the course of a season.”
So…who IS the best defensive player in the league?
The answer is Victor Wembanyama
Wait DPOY is an INDIVIDUAL award the same way MVP is, the same way being voted to an All-Star team is, the same way being, idk…inducted into the hall of fame is. 😅 It has nothing to do with his team.
So what defensive ranking does a team have to have to constitute someone for DPOY?
I can see his block going down due to players not willing to challenge him.
ROTY and DPOY
If I’m not mistaken, the Spurs have a top 6 defense when he’s on the floor and a bad defense when he’s off so combining that with blocks and steals, sounds a lot like he deserves DPOY to me
You'll probably never see this comment, but here's my question. Let's assume Wemby keeps his current standings and averages 5 blocks and 2 steals per game until the end of this season... wouldn't he deserve DPOY even with his team bad defensive record ?
I understand DPOY is related to your team's success but at some point we should also not forget it is an individual award. Wemby is having historic numbers defensively. If he finishes the year with 4+ blocks per game and 2 steals I think he would deserve it regarless of the team record.
Spurs are good defensively when wemby is on the court. Statistically he’s the most impactful defender in the league and putting up the best numbers. Whyre we punishing him for his team playing bad while he’s out?
Bro when he’s on the floor the spurs have the 6th best defensive rating in the league but when he sits they have the WORST. It’s an INDIVIDUAL award.
AD is clear cut Defensive player of the years
Short answer… Yes
Draymond, we know, you hate Rudy.
The defensive player of the year award is not a team accomplishment so rather the team is winning or loosing the person that makes the difference on defense should be considered in the running for it. Victor leads the league in steals and blocks that's it that's all we need to know
DPOY is an individual award, not a team award. His stats are better than Rudy's.
totally agree - wemby could be dpoy if he had a bigger impact on the number of wins compared to last year. spurs don’t need to be top of the league but let’s say at least 33% win so that wemby could be a real contender.
we play Gs 3xs this month so let’s see how draymond treats wemby
didnt know Draymond had a show wow
If the award was for the best defensive team, then the Spurs are terrible. DPOY is an INDIVIDUAL award. Let’s be honest. Who is the most intimidating defensive player in the NBA? It’s Victor.
"that's going too far"
Draymond Green, who knows what "going too far" means with 3.5 altercations per game.
I can see the argument, but I think as it’s an individual award there’s also a case to be made in how much of a difference maker the player is to his team.
The Spurs defence trails dead last, more than seven points adrift of the terrible Washington Wizards in the six games they’ve played without him, that’s how bad they are. If he were on a team with even average defence, he’d be a clear favourite.
Defensive “PLAYER” of the year not defensive team of the year💯😒
It’s defensive PLAYER not team!
What is the argument for jason tatum winning mvp over guys like jokic, luka, and SGA? What does he lead those players in (record not included) that would make him a real mvp candidate?
He will win it this year
If the fate of the entire universe was gambled on one single basketball play. If I was selecting the defensive team. Wemby would be my first pick.
Draymond, you’re smarter than this.
He’s not going to win DPOY due to his team but no one is moving the needle. When he’s on the floor the spurs have the 8th best defense, when he’s off the floor they’re dead last by a wide margin. That’s the reason he’s getting consideration.
He should make an NBA all defensive team at least.
I respect your opinion, but I disagree. When someone plays ZERO games as a 'rookie', he is a rookie the next season, be it a 'redshirt' rookie. Chet should be considered for ROY, even though Wemby will rightfully get it. As far as DPOY, I believe we should look at Wemby's +/- stats so far, which is -160, compared to Gobert's, which is +367. There's your determining factor, being that it's such a huge difference.
This my guy
i think the DPOY should be to the best defensive PLAYER, not the best defensive team, what i mean by that is that the biggest difference in defensive rating for a team when a player is on or off the floor is the spurs, they go from 24th best defense to 8th when wemby is on the floor. one guy having this much impact is crazy. thats why i really think we should consuder him for the DPOY, but i will not be mad if rudy gobert wins it.
It's defensive player of the year not defensive team of the year
Spurs is top 5 defense when hes on the floor…
His reason for Wemby not winning DPOY is because his team doesn't play Defense well. That's why it's Defensive PLAYER Of The Year and not Best Defense in the league Award . The NBA needs Clear Cut Rules for these awards. Is the MVP the best player on the best team or is it the player that if taken away from said team ,that team doesn't win more than half their games ? To me , pop is giving Wemby the year to figure out the NBA and it seems like he's finally start to come around .
DPOY is an individual award its not a Defensive Team award so it should not be taken against him that his team is bad defensively.
Put Wemby in TWolves, for sure he will have the same impact (or better) with Gobert's.
It is stupid. DPOY is an individual trophy. It should be separated from the team results.
Yeah Wemby is the best defensive player of the league this season. Without a doubt.
Its called Defensive **PLAYER** of the Year for a reason. If they make a defensive team of the year award then Minnesota will win, but for now Wemby is just too good to not give the award.
WHO IS PAYING THESE JAYSON TATUM MEDIA STANS WHILE LUKA BREATHS
I think that with Wemby on the floor the Spurs have something like the 6th best defense in the league… without him they are dead last.
Dray, come play with Wemby 😂
