2 things we should factor in :
- Chet has been around the league, and practicing with his team for one year prior to his rookie season
- Wemby is discovering a new country, culture and game.. for those of you who had the chance to move overseas, remember how hard it is to settle the first year, culturally and professionally?

This is crazy. Rookie of the year should never be about wins. Rookie of the year is an individual award not team award. Example: Carmelo Anthony was on a playoff team as rookie and was a big part on why they were there but it was given to LeBron. It’s an individual award. Never should be viewed the same way people view the MVP.
Wemby is doing thing chet has not even accomplished yet. He also doing it in less time on the court. He is also doing better defensively than Chet in every category. Since Wemby moved to Center his efficiency is 52/31/85. Vs Chet 55/37/71. It was just 5 games ago the spurs started to make effort to get Wemby the ball. Vs Chet who has played run for him almost every quarter. Usage rate for Chet within offense is more than Wemby yet Chet still can’t eclipse what Wemby is doing even though Chet is playing more mins, better talent, all star point guard and offense that runs him half court sets and 3 different players who can get him entry passes accurately. Not to mention because he plays with Shai he gets a lot of open looks vs Wemby being double or triple teamed at times. This has not ever been a debate
Wins do matter but it depends on how you impact the wins. Wemby isn’t quite what we wanted, but he’s still very good. However comparing him to Chet is silly. Chet is better in almost every way at this stage. I don’t see more upper end talent in Chet for sure, but Chet is just better. His efficiency is dramatically better and he is better by every advanced stat by huge amounts. Let’s not pretend box score has anything to do w impact. Wemby is making plays when his team is down 20 and no one cares if they score easy 2s. This doesn’t change that he’s got incredible talent but he isn’t close to rookie of the year at this point. To many mental mistakes, too little impact in the team, and he is way way too much of an ineffective volume scorer at this point. All that could change obvs. He’s also (outside of blocking shots) and poor defender in most respects. He’s lost a lot, loses track of his man, can be overwhelmed physically, and appears disinterested for stretches. All that can and should be cleaned up, but we all have to be honest about what he’s actually doing. And remember that the ROY is about what you do on the floor not what you can be. 😊

Wemby is the RoY. Chet is a 2nd year pro! Chet had a whole year to learn the NBA court culture and work on his shooting. If Chet wins then the NBA is sanctioning the red-shirting of rookies to allow them to better their chances at RoY. Chet could not function on the Spurs’ team; Wemby would have OKC on a near ZERO losses season.
If anyone watched the full TNT clip in context, Shaq wasn't comparing Wemby to Bol Bol, or saying Bol Bol is better. he was just stating that this is not the first time we have seen this size and skill set / player type cuz everyone going we never seen anything like Wemby before. He even acknowledged later that Wemby is way better and on the trajectory to stardom, which is way above Bol Bol's level just trying to get any playing time. Good video but the argument and the title is based on a take that is presented out of context.

The jist of it was "Bol Bol and Wemby have the same amount of tools and the only thing separating them is effort" which was a pretty shallow take. It's like someone commenting "we will never see a player like Shaq again" and someone commenting "you're wrong Andre Drummond plays the same way and has the same tools the only thing separating him from Shaq is effort".

In my mind, Wemby is clearly ROTY. But so what? He's developing into a tall shooting forward, not a center. The problem is, so far he isn't shooting very well, and has most success catching lobs for dunks, a la Dereck Lively or Aaron Gordon. His "handles" are pretty useless when he's guarded by players who strip the ball or pick his pocket. He's a great help defender in the paint, maybe the best in the league in that regard. But he can't guard physical players who push him around.
So all in all he's still a mixed bag. Sure, he's "only a rookie", but what worries me is that he's developing the wrong way. He seems to be geared towards becoming a shooter like KD, without any evidence thus far that he will shoot as well.
And, for whatever reason, his impact is negligible. The Spurs perform as well when he's off the court as when he's on the court, and their record will likely be worse this year than last year.
Something still needs to change to help him realize his potential as an all-time great. Plus there's the threat of injuries to his longevity.
