- Everyone knows about shotguns, but the small round "shot" that they use has to be carefully made or it won't be spherical. Rob shows you how the elaborate process was done more than a hundred years ago.
The shot-tower in Taroona (near Hobart), Tasmania, Australia, built in 1870 and described in this video as "the tallest one in the world", is 192.6 feet (58.7 meters) tall. It is the tallest shot-tower in the southern hemisphere.
The Phoenix Shot-Tower, in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States, built in 1828, is 234.25 feet (71.4 meters) tall.
If you check out the corner of Tyrrel and Brown steets in Newcastle NSW using street view on google maps you will see we have a lead shot tower here too. When I was in primary school in Newcastle, one of the excursions was a trip around this area to be taught about its history including a stop at the lead shot tower.
